Question for a maintainer: is ShellExecEnv the right place for this record?
It is per-command state on an object that every command in the scope shares, so Cmd and a standalone Assigns reset it on entry. cmd_local_env above is per-command state on this struct too.
The alternative is a field on Cmd and on the standalone Assigns, which Expansion writes through its parent. That needs no reset, but each parent then folds the value by hand. Behaviour and tests are the same either way.

Question for a maintainer: is bash the reference for this order?
The order is now words, then prefix assignments, then the redirect target. bash 5.2 does that, also with --posix. dash and the POSIX step list expand the redirect before the assignments.
Assignments before the redirect is what main already does. Only the words moved to the front.
WalkthroughThe shell now tracks command-substitution exit status in its execution environment. Command execution and standalone assignment statements use that status when expansion leaves no command name. Command arguments expand before assignment words and redirects, and empty command names proceed to command lookup. ChangesShell command-substitution status

src/runtime/shell/states/Assigns.rs— Scripts whose prefix assignment contains an expansion that fails now stop with exit 1 and no stderr text, after the words of the command already ran their substitutions. Assigns::child_done at Assigns.rs:110-114 drops the Expansion's error and returns 1; Cmd::child_done at Cmd.rs:345-348 only calls Expansion::take_err when the child is an Expansion, so for an Assigns child it sets exit_code=1 at Cmd.rs:355 silently. Fix: take the error from the failed Expansion in Assigns::child_done and write it via cmd_write_failing_error, for both AssignCtx::Cmd and AssignCtx::Shell, as the word path does at Cmd.rs:352.Why this was flagged
The trigger is a failing expansion inside an assignment value, for example
FOO={1,2}{1,2}...over the brace limit, inFOO=<bad> cmdor standaloneFOO=<bad>. The Expansion ends in ExpansionState::Err and reports 1 (Expansion.rs:259-264). Assigns::child_done at Assigns.rs:110-114 deinits the child without calling Expansion::take_err and reports 1 upward. For the prefix form Cmd::child_done at Cmd.rs:341-357 sees StateKind::Assign, computes err=None at Cmd.rs:347, and sets exit_code=1 with no message; for the standalone form the Stmt receives 1 and nothing is printed either. The PR added tests at bunshell.test.ts:851 and 916 that asserttooManyBracesErroris printed for a failing word, but the assignment sibling prints nothing. The PR also reordered Cmd so words run before assignments (Cmd.rs:260-270), which meansFOO=<bad> cmd $(side-effect)now performs the word substitution and then fails silently, a sequence the base did not produce.Verification: src/runtime/shell/states/Assigns.rs:110-114 never calls
Expansion::take_err, so theShellErris freed with the node. src/runtime/shell/states/Cmd.rs:345-349 only takes the error whenchild_kindisStateKind::Expansion, so for theAssignchild it falls to Cmd.rs:354-356 with nothing written to stderr. The base branch already fails by the identical route; the diff only reorders the phases.

🔴 Users whose scripts assign from a substitution ending in || : now get a rejected ShellError or a skipped && chain where the base branch continued. Assigns.rs:90 reports the body's status, and Bun Shell has no : builtin (Builtin.rs:173 lists true only), so N=$(grep -c x f || :) && echo $N exits 1. The PR notes a separate change adds :. Fix: add the : builtin in this PR or land it first, so the status change does not turn a pre-existing builtin gap into a failed assignment; the same applies to any other $(...) body idiom that only fails under Bun Shell.
Why this was flagged
Trigger: await $\N=$(grep -c x f || :)`or the same as the last line of abun x.shscript, where the user relies on the common|| :idiom. Inside the$(...)body:resolves to no builtin (Builtin.rs:173 only definestrue) and to no binary on PATH, so the body's Cmd ends with bun: command not found: :and status 1 (Cmd.rs:486-490). Expansion.rs:632 records Some(1) and Assigns.rs:90 returns it as the statement's status. With the defaultthrows(true)Bun.$ rejects with ShellError exitCode 1, andbun exec/bun x.shexit 1; an&& restchain skipsrest. On the base branch Assigns always returned 0 (old Assigns.rs:80), so these scripts ran to completion. The PR description names this downside and defers :to a separate change, but until that change lands every such script fails on merge; shipping:` with or before this change removes the regression without weakening the status semantics.
Verification: Trigger: any assignment-only statement whose $(...) body ends with the common || : idiom. /home/claude/bun/src/runtime/shell/Builtin.rs:171-196 registers true/false but no : builtin, so the body completes with status 1, and the new /home/claude/bun/src/runtime/shell/states/Assigns.rs:90 returns it as the statement's status; on the base branch Assigns.rs returned a hard-coded 0.

Confirmed. It is the first Downsides bullet and item 2 of the Notes: N=$(grep -c x f || :) && echo $N goes from exit 0 to exit 1, because Bun Shell has no : builtin.
: is a new builtin, so it needs a yes from a maintainer. No PR for it is open. I can add it to this PR (one row next to true in Builtin.rs, tests, and the docs list) if a maintainer wants the two to land together.
…pand words first A simple command with no command name completes with the status of the last `$(...)` it performed (POSIX 2.9.1). `Expansion` now records that status on the shell environment for every substitution that runs a command. `Cmd` and a statement made only of assignments reset it on entry and report it when no command name results. `Cmd::exit_code` is no longer written before the exec starts. A sole `$(...)` that expands to a program now reports the exit code of the program. The command no longer finishes, and kills the program, when the stdout and stderr of the program reach EOF. `Cmd` expands its words first, then its prefix assignments, then its redirect target. This is the order of bash. dash expands the redirect before the assignments. A command with no command name now performs its redirect, so a target that cannot be opened fails the command. An empty-string argv[0] is a command name again and fails with "command not found".
…r a delay The fixture that closes stdout and stderr waited 250 ms before it exited. It now waits for a file that the test writes after the pipes are closed.

About the additional finding in the review (a failed expansion in an assignment value stops the command with exit 1 and no message): main does the same, and #37841 is the open change for it. This PR does not touch that path. The one difference here is the order: the words of a command now expand before its prefix assignments (Notes, item 4). |

Remove the timed sleeps from the closer test.
The fixture loops on Bun.sleepSync(5), and the test loops on await Bun.sleep(5). The repository guideline forbids waiting for time to pass in tests. The parent loop can be a condition wait: fs.watch, or a promise that resolves when closed.txt appears. The child can block on a synchronous read of a FIFO or a stdin pipe that the parent closes. It does not need to poll a file. A previous review raised the same concern about the earlier Atomics.wait version.
As per coding guidelines: "never wait for time to pass in tests. Always wait for the condition to be met instead of waiting for an arbitrary amount of time."

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked whether a $(...) body's own commands can clobber the outer command's recorded status — they cannot, since Expansion.rs:202 runs the body on a dupe_for_subshell env whose last_cmd_subst_status starts at None. I also diffed the open_redirect_file extraction against the old setup_redirect Atom arm: open flags (ast_node().redirect.to_flags()), mode, and both error messages are unchanged.
Extended reasoning...
The change reworks how the Rust shell interpreter (src/runtime/shell) reports exit status for simple commands without a command name, moving the status to a shared ShellExecEnv field and reordering expansion to args, assigns, redirect; it touches no auth, crypto, or input-parsing surface. The prior review's two findings (shared-env status racing with & background commands, and the missing : builtin turning || : idioms into failures) are structurally unchanged in this version, and the PR itself poses open design questions to maintainers, so this is not an approve.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

🟡 nit (optional): if the shell promise rejects, this test spins until the runner's timeout and leaves closer.js running as an orphan instead of failing with the real error. The poll loop at test/js/bun/shell/bunshell.test.ts:803 only ends on settled (set in .then for the resolve path) or on closed.txt appearing, and nothing observes a rejection. Fix: mark settled in both branches (.finally or a .catch that rethrows after setting the flag), bound the poll with a deadline, and write go.txt in a finally so the child always exits.
Why this was flagged
The test at test/js/bun/shell/bunshell.test.ts:783 starts $\and attaches only.then(result => { settled = true; ... })at lines 798-801. If the shell promise rejects (spawn failure, a thrown ShellError from a bug in the code under test, cwd removed),settledstays false andclosed.txtmay never be written, so the loop at line 803while (!settled && !existsSync(...)) await Bun.sleep(5);never exits andgo.txtat line 804 is never created. The test then dies on the runner's timeout rather than on the actual rejection, and the fixturecloser.js(line 790while (!fs.existsSync("go.txt")) Bun.sleepSync(5);`) keeps spinning as an orphan after the temp dir is removed. REVIEW.md asks that every failure event be wired to reject the awaited promise and that polls be bounded; there is no safeguard here because the rejection is only observed at line 805, which is never reached. On the base branch this test does not exist, so this is a hygiene gap in the new test rather than a runtime regression.
Verification: Triggered only when the $ promise rejects. test/js/bun/shell/bunshell.test.ts:795-801 chain only .then(result => { settled = true; ... }), so on rejection settled stays false; the loop at line 803 has no deadline and ends only when closed.txt exists. The test then spins until bun test's per-test timeout rather than failing promptly on the rejection, and go.txt (line 804) is never written.
