Problem

  • Bun.serve({ http3: true }) routes every request line. :method: BREW runs fetch as GET, and a static route serves it.
  • :path: /guar<HTAB>ded reaches fetch as /guarded, past the /guarded route.
  • Cause: the on_stream_headers callback (packages/bun-uws/src/Http3Context.h:40) calls the router with no check. The HTTP/2 listener refuses these lines since Bun.serve http2: reject the request bytes the HTTP/1 parser rejects #40676.

Fix

  • The callback answers on the stream, before the router and 100 Continue. 501: a token that is not a Bun method in uppercase. 400: a malformed :method or :path, a :path with CONNECT, no authority.
  • The predicates are the HTTP/2 listener's, moved to Utilities.h. HTTP/2 verdicts, req.url and route matching do not change.
  • Verified: test/js/bun/http/serve-http3.test.ts, 3 new tests (2 fail on 1.4.2) that assert which handlers ran. Also serve-http2-protocol.test.ts and serve-http2.test.ts.

Background

  • HTTP/3 has no request line. QPACK delivers :method and :path as length-prefixed strings, so any byte can arrive. Request.method is one of 36 methods.
  • quic.c refuses a header block with CR, LF or NUL and closes the connection. This check answers one stream.
  • Weighed: the same check in quic.c, which closes the connection, and a method id on every transport (uws: resolve a request method to its id inline #44510), which still needs this check.

Downsides

  • A lowercase method over HTTP/3 now gets 501, as over HTTP/2. curl -X patch and a browser fetch send patch as written, which worked as PATCH.
  • Bun's fetch with method: "CONNECT" over HTTP/3 now gets 400, was 200. The client sends :path with CONNECT.
  • Each valid HTTP/3 request pays +78 instructions. Release text: +256 bytes. h3blast: no change above noise (Notes).
Notes

Scope. This PR is the whole request-line check of the HTTP/3 listener. No user reported the HTTP/3 case. It is the HTTP/3 follow-up to #40676, whose notes record that HTTP/3 has no pseudo-header validation. The HTTP/3 listener is experimental and opt-in.

Verdicts by transport. One port with HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3. Routes: /guarded with a GET and a POST arm, /static, and a fetch handler. Release builds of main 47ba1c8 and of this PR.

Request line HTTP/1.1 HTTP/2 HTTP/3 before HTTP/3 after
BREW /echo connection closed, no response 501 200, fetch sees GET 501
BREW /static connection closed, no response 501 200 from the static route 501

GET https://other.invalid/static 200 from the static route RST_STREAM 200, req.url is https://other.invalid/static 400

HTTP/1.1 is not changed here. With other route tables, BREW /x HTTP/1.1 runs fetch as GET (#18406, #6556). #44510 and the branch stacked on it address that.

Layers. quic.c owns the shape of the header block and the bytes that make it malformed: CR, LF, NUL, an uppercase name. lsquic then closes the connection (the new test shows ERR_QUIC_APPLICATION_ERROR 270 for CR in :path). The callback owns the 501 and the rules on values, and it answers one stream with a status.

Other work at this line

PR Relation
#37600 Adds a :path 400 at the same line. That part is included here, with two different verdicts. OPTIONS * is served, as over HTTP/2 (#37600 answers 400). CONNECT without :path gets the 404 of the router, as over HTTP/2 (#37600 answers 400). Its req.url part is not included.
#44510 Resolves the method to an id. The commit stacked on it (8924618) adds a 501 at the same line. After this PR that commit keeps its HTTP/1.1 part, and isKnownMethod in Utilities.h becomes a test of the id.
#42724 (closed) Proposed this :path check together with a path normalizer in the router. The objection was to the normalizer: "bespoke normalizing it differently in uWS is not a good idea". This PR normalizes nothing.
#37649 Adds header-block rules in quic.c. It closes the connection for some lines that get 400 here (for example a control byte in :path) and for DEL, which is served here. The PR that lands second updates those rows.
#44061, #44165 WebSockets over HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 use Extended CONNECT, which has a :path. They pass a flag to validPseudoHeaderTarget. After this PR the flag goes to validPathForMethod.
#37635 Builds req.url through one function. Independent: the two merge without conflict.
#35762 Would turn the quic.c refusals into stream resets. Independent.

The review thread this follows. On #40137 alii asked for the :path rule of HTTP/2 and wrote that #37600 "adds the same check on the h3 side in Http3Context.h, so a shared helper next to validFieldName would let both transports use one copy". Jarred replied: "Happy to hoist the helper next to validFieldName for #37600 to share." That thread covers origin-form and * with OPTIONS. The 501, the token rule, the byte rule and CONNECT with :path follow #40676.

Still served over HTTP/3 and reset over HTTP/2 (not changed here): a request without :scheme, userinfo in :authority, a Host that differs from :authority, :protocol or :status in a request, CONNECT with :scheme, 0x01 or ESC in a field value, content-length: 5 on a stream that ends with its header block. These are rules on the field list. #37649 has the header-block ones.

Not changed here

Questions for the reviewer

  1. OPTIONS * stays served over HTTP/3, as over HTTP/2. Bun.serve HTTP/3: validate :path and :authority before building req.url #37600 answers 400, as HTTP/1.1 does. Which one is wanted?
  2. CONNECT without :path stays a 404 from the router, as over HTTP/2. Bun.serve HTTP/3: validate :path and :authority before building req.url #37600 answers 400.
  3. Userinfo in :authority and a Host that differs from :authority stay served over HTTP/3 (a test pins userinfo since Robustness and input-handling pass across install, shell, TLS/QUIC, HTTP/3, SQL and crypto #37669). HTTP/2 resets both.

Cost

  • Instructions per valid HTTP/3 request, with the release build flags: +78 for GET /, +142 with a 42-byte :path, 2,894 for a 2,048-byte :path (about 1.4 per byte). The method lookup is one call of 23 instructions for GET. No allocation and no syscall.
  • The request-line checks of HTTP/2 get cheaper, because :path is now scanned 8 bytes at a time: 168 to 152 instructions for GET /, 373 to 217 with a 42-byte :path, 10,403 to 2,968 with a 2,048-byte :path. A static_assert pins the word test for every byte value in every position.
  • Release text (llvm-size, merge base against PR): 105,989,607 to 105,989,863 bytes, +256.

h3blast, main 47ba1c8 against this PR. Release builds on one machine. Three servers stay up on the same two CPUs: main, a byte-identical copy of main, and the PR. packages/h3blast (2 threads, 4 connections, 32 streams) runs against one server at a time in 2 s slices, and the order rotates each cycle. The columns are the median req/s of main, then the median per-cycle ratio to main with a bootstrap 95% interval. 0 errors, 2xx only.

Scenario Cycles main req/s main again PR
static route GET /hi 160 96,716 -1.3% (-2.9 .. +1.1) -0.7% (-3.2 .. +1.8)
fetch handler GET / 160 58,625 -0.2% (-1.8 .. +2.6) 0.0% (-2.2 .. +2.7)
static route, 16 browser request headers 60 68,867 -2.5% (-5.9 .. -0.6) +1.4% (-2.2 .. +3.5)
fetch handler, 16 browser request headers 60 35,724 -2.2% (-3.4 .. +1.6) -0.6% (-3.9 .. +3.3)

The machine is a shared VM with about 29% steal time, so the identical copy shows its noise floor. The PR is inside that floor in every row. Server CPU time per request (/proc/<pid>/task/*/schedstat), PR against main: +1.5% (+0.1 .. +3.0), +0.3% (-0.9 .. +2.0), -3.0% (-5.0 .. -0.1), +1.0% (-2.3 .. +2.8) for the four rows. The identical copy: +0.4%, -0.1%, +0.2%, +1.1%. A request costs the server 5.9 µs (static) to 21 µs on this machine, and 78 instructions are about 0.3% of the smallest. h3blast needs a small file with the BoringSSL allocator hooks to link against the release objects.

Tests

  • New rows: 37 lines get 501, 22 get 400, 1 closes the connection in quic.c, 44 are routed.
  • Mutants of the change, each caught: no return after the refusal (2 tests fail on the handler calls), the 501 decided before the 400 rules (1 test fails), a weaker token rule (1 test fails), a changed constant in the word test (does not compile).
  • Debug build: serve-http3.test.ts 82 pass, serve-http2-protocol.test.ts 202 pass, serve-http2.test.ts 93 pass.

…HTTP/2 listener refuses

The on_stream_headers callback of the HTTP/3 listener called the router
with no check on the request line. A method that Bun does not have ran
the fetch handler as GET, and a :path with a control byte or without a
leading slash reached a route.

The callback now answers on the stream, before the router and before
the automatic 100 Continue. It answers 501 to a token that is not one of
Bun's methods in uppercase. It answers 400 to a malformed :method or
:path, to a :path with CONNECT, and to a request with no authority.

The predicates are the ones the HTTP/2 listener uses, moved to
Utilities.h. Both listeners now scan :path 8 bytes at a time.

Status: reproduced on release 1.4.2 and on a release build of main. A node:quic client sends :method: BREW over HTTP/3 and the fetch handler runs with req.method === "GET". curl --http3-only -X BREW shows the same. With this change the stream gets 501, and a malformed :path gets 400, before the router.

The new tests are in test/js/bun/http/serve-http3.test.ts under request line. Two of the three fail without the change.

Walkthrough

HTTP/3 now validates request methods, paths, and authority before continue handling or routing. HTTP/2 uses the enclosing method lookup. Tests cover malformed and supported request forms in both protocols.

Changes

HTTP Request Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Request-line validation rules
packages/bun-uws/src/Utilities.h, packages/bun-uws/src/Http3Request.h
Validation checks classify invalid request lines as 400 Bad Request, valid unknown methods as 501 Not Implemented, and valid known methods as eligible for routing. HTTP/3 requests expose the original method string.
HTTP/3 validation and routing
packages/bun-uws/src/Http3Context.h, test/js/bun/http/serve-http3.test.ts
The handler returns refusal statuses before continue handling or routing. Tests cover unsupported methods, malformed and valid request forms, and request behavior within a session.
HTTP/2 method lookup
packages/bun-uws/src/Http2Context.h, test/js/bun/http/serve-http2-protocol.test.ts
The header handler uses the enclosing method lookup. A malformed-path test checks that the stream resets while the connection remains usable.

💡 Result:

The matching Bun source is `packages/bun-uws/src/Http3Request.h`. A recent Bun change says `Http3Request` reads the decoded header list, and trims leading/trailing whitespace from header values—including `:authority`, which Bun exposes as `Host`. The search results don’t show the exact `getHeader()` implementation, so they don’t establish whether it treats `authority` specially beyond that trimming behavior.

Compare the original :authority and Host fields before routing.

The QUIC decoder retains both fields in the decoded header list. Http3Request then stores :authority as authority, while getHeader("host") returns only that value. A conflicting literal Host value is not compared.

A request with valid method and path but different authority values can therefore pass http3RequestLineRefusal and reach routing. Preserve the literal Host value separately and return 400 when both non-empty values differ. Keep Host as the fallback when :authority is absent.

Run the independent request-line tests concurrently.

These three tests create separate temporary directories and servers. Use test.concurrent for each test unless a shared QUIC fixture requires sequential execution. As per coding guidelines, “When multiple tests in the same file spawn processes or write files, make them concurrent with test.concurrent or describe.concurrent unless it's very difficult to make them concurrent.”

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the isKnownMethod relaxation in Utilities.h (first byte uppercase plus the Bun__HTTPMethod__from lookup): every entry in METHOD_MAP in src/http_types/Method.rs is either all-uppercase or all-lowercase, so mixed-case and lowercase spellings still miss, matching the old [A-Z-]* loop for the current table. The 8-byte memcpy scan in hasControlOrSpace only runs while end - p >= 8 with a byte-wise tail, so it does not read past the peer-supplied :path.

Extended reasoning...

The change moves the HTTP/2 request-line predicates into Utilities.h, adds an HTTP/3 refusal (400/501) before router dispatch in Http3Context.h, and adds tests; it touches request parsing of untrusted peer input on two transports. Two confirmed findings are posted inline (CONNECT-with-:path now refused over HTTP/3 and the remaining HTTP/2-vs-HTTP/3 authority/Host gap), so this is not an approval; this note only records the two adjacent concerns that were examined and ruled out.

🟡 (optional) Bun's own fetch sending method CONNECT to a Bun.serve HTTP/3 listener now gets "400 Bad Request" where the base returned the handler's response. Bun's HTTP/3 client sends :path and :scheme with CONNECT, and validPathForMethod at Utilities.h:92 now returns path.empty() for CONNECT, so http3RequestLineRefusal answers 400 at Utilities.h:108 before the router. Fix: make the client omit :path and :scheme for CONNECT per RFC 9114 §4.3.1 in the same PR, or accept CONNECT with :path over HTTP/3 until the client is fixed; the new test pins fetchConnect: 400 instead of the client bug.

Why this was flagged

Anyone calling fetch("https://host/x", { method: "CONNECT" }) from Bun to a Bun.serve({ http3: true }) server, or any client that sends Extended CONNECT with :path (RFC 9220 WebSocket/WebTransport), hits Http3Context.h:38. The PR's own test (serve-http3.test.ts, "Bun's fetch sends :scheme and :path with CONNECT") shows Bun's client emits :path on CONNECT. On the base branch there was no path check and the router dispatched the request, returning the handler's status. Now Utilities.h:92 if (method == "CONNECT") return path.empty(); fails, Utilities.h:108 returns "400 Bad Request", and the stream ends before any handler runs. The dismissal cites HTTP/2 parity, but the HTTP/2 listener never accepted CONNECT with :path, so no Bun-to-Bun CONNECT ever worked there; over HTTP/3 it did and it breaks for every such request. The remedy is to fix the client's CONNECT header block (omit :path, :scheme) in the same change or keep the HTTP/3 verdict until it is.

Verification: A Bun process calls fetch(url, { method: "CONNECT", protocol: "http3" }) against a Bun.serve({ http3: true }) server. Bun's HTTP/3 client emits :scheme and :path for every method, so the check at packages/bun-uws/src/Utilities.h:92 fails and Utilities.h:108 returns "400 Bad Request". On the base Http3Context.h had no such check and the router dispatched the CONNECT to the handler.

if (!validPathForMethod(method, path) || authority.empty()) return "400 Bad Request";

🟣 pre-existing, not blocking: HTTP/3 clients can still send a literal Host that contradicts :authority, userinfo in :authority, or no :scheme and be routed, while the same request is reset over HTTP/2; the new shared predicate leaves this sibling gap open. http3RequestLineRefusal at packages/bun-uws/src/Utilities.h:106-110 only tests authority.empty(), and packages/bun-uws/src/Http3Context.h:38 passes req.getHeader("host"), which Http3Request.h:38-45 already collapsed to :authority, so the contradiction is invisible to the check. Fix: pass :authority and the literal Host separately and run the same validPseudoHeaderTarget rules (authority != host, '@' in authority) for HTTP/3 so one predicate guards both transports.
A small fix can ride a push you are already making; otherwise a short reply is enough.

Why this was flagged

An HTTP/3 client sends :authority: a.example plus host: b.example, or :authority: user@ a.example. packages/bun-uws/src/Http3Request.h:36-45 stores :authority and ignores the literal Host when :authority is present, so getHeader("host") at packages/bun-uws/src/Http3Context.h:38 returns only :authority. http3RequestLineRefusal at packages/bun-uws/src/Utilities.h:106-110 checks authority.empty() and nothing else, so the request is routed and req.url is built from :authority. The HTTP/2 listener rejects both via validPseudoHeaderTarget at packages/bun-uws/src/Utilities.h:97-103 (authority != host, authority.find('@')) and resets the stream at Http2Context.h:1693-1695. The PR's title promises that HTTP/3 refuses what HTTP/2 refuses and the new helpers sit side by side in Utilities.h, yet the h3 predicate was written without those two clauses; the repository review rule to enforce a security gate through one shared predicate across h2/h3 is what the dismissal set aside as scope. The remedy is to feed the literal Host and :authority separately into the shared predicate for HTTP/3.

Verification: Pre-existing. Any HTTP/3 peer sends :authority: a.example plus host: b.example, :authority: user@ a.example, or omits :scheme. packages/bun-uws/src/Utilities.h:106-110 http3RequestLineRefusal only tests authority.empty(); Http3Context.h:38 passes req.getHeader("host"), and the request is routed. The base commit's Http3Context.h had no request-line check at all.
