Problem

  • uWS asks Rust whether it knows a request method. Bun__HTTPMethod__from is an out-of-line FFI call from the strict request-line check (packages/bun-uws/src/HttpParser.h:816) and from the HTTP/2 check (Http2Context.h:173).
  • Outside strict mode, isValidMethod checks each byte of the method a second time.
  • The PRs after this one need the id of a request's method. uWS has no cheap way to get it.

Fix

  • methodIdFromWire() (packages/bun-uws/src/HttpMethod.h) maps a method to the discriminant of bun_http_types::Method: one switch on the length, then compares of a fixed width.
  • The strict check and the HTTP/2 check call it. Bun__HTTPMethod__from and isValidMethod go. The accepted set is the same 36 uppercase names.
  • A static_assert and a unit test in Method.rs hold both name tables to one order. A second static_assert checks the id enum in BunCommonStrings.cpp against the table.

Behaviour change: none

Tests that cover this code: test/js/node/http/node-http.test.ts (HPE_INVALID_METHOD), test/js/node/test/parallel/test-http-server-client-error.js, test/js/bun/http/serve-http2-protocol.test.ts (unknown :method), test/js/bun/http/bun-serve-routes.test.ts.

Background

  • A method is case-sensitive (RFC 9110 9.1). Bun's Method enum has 36 of them.
  • Strict method validation is the node:http mode. Like llhttp, the parser answers 400 to a method outside that set.
  • Considered keeping the FFI call. Each request then pays for a call into Rust.

Downsides

  • A new method needs a line in HttpMethod.h too. The ids after it change in three files: that one, Method.rs and BunCommonStrings.cpp.
  • Per request: GET 2435 to 2406 instructions, POST 2750 to 2712 (Notes). Release binary: 1,792 bytes smaller.
Notes
  • This is the first PR of a stack. After it: Bun.serve: answer 501 to an unknown method and 404 to a router miss, not a closed socket #45396 (501 for an unknown method on HTTP/1.1), Bun.serve: register the default handler on "/*" for every method #45397 (the default handler on "/*" for every method), node:http: keep the method of a dispatched request as sent in 'clientError' rawPacket #45398 (node:http rawPacket), and two drafts: server: read the method id uWS resolved, not the method name #45399 (Rust reads the method id) and uws: key HttpRouter by method id #45400 (HttpRouter keyed by the id).
  • Bun.serve http3: 501 or 400 before the router for a request line the HTTP/2 listener refuses #45357 moves isKnownMethod to Utilities.h and conflicts with this PR in that function. The PR that lands second adapts: the body of isKnownMethod becomes methodIdFromWire(method) != HTTP_METHOD_NONE, and the declaration of Bun__HTTPMethod__from goes.
  • Instructions per request for parse, route and method read, main then this PR. GET to fetch: 2435, 2406. POST to fetch: 2750, 2712. PUT to fetch: 2635, 2606. PROPFIND to fetch: 2751, 2673. UNSUBSCRIBE to fetch: 2861, 2753. GET to a GET route: 2904, 2869. POST to a POST route: 3219, 3174. PUT to a PUT route: 3104, 3069. A standalone driver runs the real HttpParser.h and HttpRouter.h (clang -O3) under qemu-x86_64 -one-insn-per-tb -d exec, nochain. Repeat runs differ by at most 4 instructions in 2.6 million. The drop is the second pass over the method bytes. In the strict parser (node:http) the inline switch takes the place of the FFI call: an earlier run of the driver with the Rust function linked in measured GET 2463 -> 2454 and POST 2802 -> 2790.
  • Instructions per request end to end: not measured. perf is not available in the build container (perf_event_paranoid is 4), and valgrind is not installed.
  • sizeof HttpRequest, Http3Request, HttpRouter: no change (6472, 152, 3360 bytes).
  • Release binary (llvm-size): text 80,705,363 -> 80,703,571 bytes (main f4d755a, then this PR). data and bss do not change. Bun__HTTPMethod__from was 2,506 bytes.
  • isValidMethod outside strict mode returned true for every input it could get. The loop in consumeRequestLine that finds the end of the method already rejects an empty method and each byte that is not a letter or -.
  • The strict check runs only after that loop took bytes from A to Z and -, and the HTTP/2 check made the same test first. So a lowercase name, which Bun__HTTPMethod__from accepted, never reached the lookup.
  • Both name tables list the 36 names in ascending byte order. The static_assert in HttpMethod.h and the test discriminants_follow_wire_name_order in Method.rs each check the order and the count. BunCommonStrings.cpp has a third copy of the ids, for Bun__HTTPMethod__toJS. Each of its enumerators is now checked at compile time against the name at that index of HTTP_METHOD_NAMES.
  • In this PR the callers only ask whether a method has an id. The PR that first reads the id value in Rust carries a test that sends each of the 36 methods and checks req.method.
  • Suites (debug build with ASAN): node-http, serve-http2-protocol, serve-http2, serve-http3, bun-serve-routes, request-smuggling, three test-http-*-client-error Node tests, cargo test -p bun_http_types.

no test proof · iteration 0 · the description declares no behaviour change, so there is no failing test to prove; the existing suite in CI is the check

Walkthrough

The change adds a shared, case-sensitive mapping for 36 HTTP method names. HTTP parsing and HTTP/2 recognition use its lookup, and non-strict wildcard routes use its method-name table. The Rust FFI lookup and local method list are removed.

Changes

HTTP method lookup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Define method-name mapping
packages/bun-uws/src/HttpMethod.h, src/http_types/Method.rs, src/jsc/bindings/BunCommonStrings.cpp
Adds a 36-name method table and a case-sensitive lookup that returns HTTP_METHOD_NONE for unrecognized tokens. Compile-time checks validate the mapping, and a Rust test checks method discriminant ordering.
Use shared method lookup
packages/bun-uws/src/HttpParser.h, packages/bun-uws/src/Http2Context.h, packages/bun-uws/src/HttpContext.h, src/http_types/Method.rs
Strict HTTP parsing and HTTP/2 method recognition use methodIdFromWire. Non-strict wildcard routes use HTTP_METHOD_NAMES. The parser helper, local method list, and Rust FFI lookup are removed.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline note, I also checked the two behavior-preservation concerns the deleted isValidMethod raises: an empty method is still rejected by the start == data check in consumeRequestLine before the new strict lookup runs, and in strict mode the byte loop's isStrictMethodChar already confines the token to [A-Z-], so methodIdFromWire never sees lowercase there. Every methodIs literal in HttpMethod.h has exactly the length of its enclosing case, so the fixed-width memcmp cannot over-read the request buffer; the HTTP/2 [A-Z-] pre-check was redundant with an exact byte compare. No remaining references to Bun__HTTPMethod__from, isValidMethod, or detail::supportedHttpMethods are left in the tree.

Extended reasoning...

The change replaces a Rust FFI method lookup with a header-only C++ switch in packages/bun-uws/src/HttpMethod.h, rewires the HTTP/1 strict request-line check, the HTTP/2 :method check, and the "*" route registration to it, and deletes the FFI export from src/http_types/Method.rs. It touches the HTTP request parser on untrusted network input, so method validation and the memcmp read widths were the security-relevant surface; both held up on inspection. One inline nit was posted about the third copy of the id table in BunCommonStrings.cpp, and the PR adds only a static_assert and a Rust unit test rather than a JS-level test for strict versus non-strict method acceptance, so a human look is still worthwhile given this opens a stack that will build on these ids.

LGTM — the follow-up commit closes the one gap raised earlier (the BunCommonStrings HTTPMethod enum is now static_asserted name-by-name against HTTP_METHOD_NAMES), and the refactor checks out as behavior-preserving.

What was reviewed:

  • Over-read risk in methodIdFromWire: every literal in each case arm has exactly the case's length, and length 0 never reaches memcmp, so data() of an empty view is never dereferenced.
  • Old vs new accepted set: HTTP/1 non-strict still rejects empty (start == data) and bad bytes in the scan loop; strict and HTTP/2 paths already filtered to A-Z/- before the lookup, so dropping the Rust call (which also accepted lowercase) changes nothing.
  • Dead code: no remaining references to Bun__HTTPMethod__from, supportedHttpMethods, or isValidMethod; the FOR_EACH_METHOD switch still covers all 36 ids.
Extended reasoning...

The diff replaces a Rust FFI method lookup with a header-only constexpr table and switch in packages/bun-uws/src/HttpMethod.h, rewires the HTTP/1 strict check, HTTP/2 :method check, and "*" route expansion to it, deletes the FFI export and the duplicate uWS method array, and adds a static_assert plus a Rust unit test tying the two id tables together. It touches the request-line parser, which handles adversarial input, but the only new memory access is a fixed-width memcmp gated by an exact length switch that is itself round-trip-tested at compile time. No CODEOWNERS entry covers these files, there are no outstanding third-party objections, the second commit addressed the sole prior nit, and the bug hunt ran dry, which together decided approve.

#45357 adds the request-line check of the HTTP/3 listener. It moves isKnownMethod from Http2Context.h to Utilities.h, and both listeners call it there. The two PRs conflict in that one function.

If #45357 lands first, the rebase here is small:

  • The body of isKnownMethod in Utilities.h becomes methodIdFromWire(method) != HTTP_METHOD_NONE.
  • The Bun__HTTPMethod__from declaration in Utilities.h goes away. Without that step the file merges cleanly and then fails to link.
  • The follow-up commit 8924618 (501 for an unknown method) no longer needs its Http3Context.h hunk or its HTTP/3 test. Its HTTP/1.1 part stays.

methodIdFromWire() maps a method token to the discriminant of
bun_http_types::Method with one switch on the length and compares of a
fixed width. The strict (node:http) request-line check and the HTTP/2
known-method check call it in place of the Bun__HTTPMethod__from FFI
call, which is removed. The accepted set is the same 36 uppercase names.

isValidMethod() goes: outside strict mode it checked each byte of the
method a second time, after the loop that found the method's end.

The name table moves from HttpContext.h to HttpMethod.h. A static_assert
there and a unit test in Method.rs hold both sides to the same order.

Status

This PR changes no behaviour. It is the groundwork for #45396, which has the reproduction of the bug.

The stack: #44510, #45396, #45397, #45398, #45399 (draft), #45400 (draft).

CI: the diff is green. Two runs each had one red test on the Windows 11 aarch64 lane, a different test each time: test/js/bun/test/parallel/test-integration-rspack.ts (timeout, build 126150) and test/cli/install/bun-install-windows-rename-retry.test.ts (build 126177). This diff touches neither test and no code that they run.
