react-compiler: keep one copy of each dependency of a phi - #42493
Conversation
ValidateExhaustiveDependencies gives a phi the dependencies of its operands. TS stores them as `new Set(deps)`, which holds each object once. The port appended clones to a `Vec`. A phi that other phis reach along several paths then held one copy of a dependency per path, so the list doubled with each `if` that reassigns a local on one branch. 22 such statements took 1 GB and 24 took 4 GB. A phi now drops a dependency that is a copy of one already in its list. The length test that picks between one dependency and an aggregate still uses the count before the set, as TS does.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. The fix is small and well-argued, but the field-equality-as-identity-proxy mapping to the TS reference's Set semantics is subtle enough that a maintainer familiar with the react-compiler port should confirm it.
What was reviewed:

deps_lenmirrors the TS pre-Setdeps.length(aggregates now store deduped sets, soagg.len()matches what TS spreads from itsSet). - Checked

Overview
This PR fixes an exponential memory blowup in the React Compiler's ValidateExhaustiveDependencies pass (src/react_compiler/validation/validate_exhaustive_dependencies.rs). The upstream TypeScript stores phi dependencies in a Set (identity-deduped); the Rust port cloned into a Vec, so a phi reached along N control-flow paths accumulated N copies — each if/else doubled the list. The fix adds is_same_dependency/contains_same_dependency to skip duplicates and a deps_len counter to preserve the TS pre-Set deps.length used for the == 0 / == 1 branch. A memory regression test in test/bundler/transpiler/react-compiler.test.ts builds a 20–22-statement if/else ladder and asserts peak RSS delta over an empty build stays under 100 MB.
Security risks
None. This is an internal compiler validation pass that only collects and (when enabled) emits diagnostics; it doesn't parse untrusted network/file input beyond source code already being compiled, and the change only affects dedup of an in-memory list.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate. The mechanical change is small (~60 lines in one function), but per REVIEW.md ported code treats the reference implementation as the spec. The core subtlety is that TS's Set dedupes by object identity, and the port clones where TS shares references, so identity must be approximated by comparing every field. For Local this includes loc (source location), which distinguishes two separate loads of the same path — matching TS. For Global only binding.name() is compared, which can merge two distinct LoadGlobal sites that TS would keep separate; this could in a narrow case shrink a downstream aggregate's len() from 2 to 1 and flip a later phi from Aggregate to Global. The PR description shows awareness of the identity-vs-structural distinction and cites 600 generated components producing identical diagnostics, and the pass ships with both checks off by default in Bun, so practical risk is low — but a maintainer look at the Global arm is worthwhile.
Other factors
The test is well-constructed per the repo's leak-test conventions: baseline-relative RSS, bound (100 MB) far below the unfixed 300 MB–1 GB, iteration count reduced on debug/ASAN, concurrent stdout/stderr/exited drain, stderr asserted before exitCode, and a positive assertion that memoization actually ran (_c(N) in output). No CODEOWNERS entry covers src/react_compiler/. The bug hunt ran to dry_streak with no findings. The deps_len += agg.len() accounting is correct because upstream aggregates are now themselves deduped, mirroring what TS spreads from its stored Set.

A field for the load site would make the arm exact. It touches about 15 match sites in this file for a difference that no build can observe, so I left it out. The doc comment of |
