Suggested reviewers: Priority: ➖ Normal Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to The new type-resolution cleanup can store a self-referential function type, and resolving it recurses without any bound, so building affected sources can crash the bundler instead of producing output. Earlier open concerns about resolution work limits and the new resource-usage tests also remain unaddressed, so this should be fixed and re-checked before merging. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4✅ Passed checks (4 passed)

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.
Beyond the inline finding, I compared Resolver::get against the removed Unifier::get branch-for-branch — TypeVar/Phi/Function/fallthrough are identical, so the memo sits on top of unchanged semantics. The new applied skip-set in resolve_identifier is sound because get on an already-resolved type returns an equal value (idempotent). Storing Arc<[Type]> inside Type adds no new arena-leak hazard: Box<Type> in Function/Property already required Type to live only in Drop-running containers, per the existing doc comment on the enum.
Extended reasoning...
The core risk here is whether the Unifier::get → Resolver::get refactor changes results, and whether the new Arc<[Type]> field introduces a leak in arena-backed storage. I read both versions side by side: the three recursive arms (TypeVar-with-substitution, Phi map, Function return_type) and the trailing ty.clone() are byte-equivalent modulo the memo lookups, and the memo is keyed on immutable state (Resolver borrows &Unifier, so substitutions cannot change while it lives; the phi memo pins each keyed Arc so pointer keys cannot be reused). The applied: HashSet<TypeId> short-circuit is safe because the second visit of a type slot would call get on the already-resolved value, which is a fixed point. On the arena question, Type already carries heap-owned Box<Type> fields whose correctness depends on the same "stored in Drop-running containers" invariant the doc comment states — Arc<[Type]> rides that existing invariant rather than creating a new one. These were the concrete concerns I checked beyond the posted RSS-threshold finding.

…InferTypes A 560 byte component took 1.9 GB to compile and an 860 byte one ran out of memory at 3 GB, all of it in InferTypes. The shape is a `let` that is reassigned and conditionally mutated in a nested `try` inside a loop that holds a second loop. The unifier stores the type of a phi unresolved, as `Phi[TypeVar, ..]`, and `get` resolves it by walking into the phis that feed it. Those form a DAG. `Phi::operands` was an owned `Vec`, so `get` built a separate copy of a phi's resolved type for every path that reaches it, and the apply step did that again for each occurrence of each identifier: 12 million type nodes from 101 substitutions. The `Vec`s were in the AST arena, which never frees, so the transient copies stayed resident too. `Phi::operands` is now an `Arc<[Type]>`, so cloning a phi type shares its operands. `get` runs through a `Resolver` that remembers the result for each type variable and each operand slice for as long as the substitutions do not change: one `get` call, the operand loop of one phi equation, or the whole apply step. The apply step resolves each type slot once. The resolved types are equal to the old ones, node for node.
…solve_type, and cap the work Four locals rotated in a `while (true)` inside another loop still ran out of memory. Every phi of the inner loop reaches every other one through two back edges, and `occurs_check` and `try_resolve_type` walked that DAG as a tree: 65 million `occurs_check` steps for four locals, against 15 000 for three. `occurs_check` now keeps the set of nodes it has walked. It stops at the first hit, so a node it reaches again has no hit below it. `try_resolve_type` keeps the result for each bound variable and each operand slice for the length of one top-level call. A second walk of a node returns an equal type, because the first walk already replaced the substitution of each bound variable below it with the resolved type. Four locals now take 2 700 steps. The number of distinct nodes is still exponential in that shape: a phi has a different resolved type under each variable that reaches it through a cycle, 3.7 times more per rotated local. The unifier counts the nodes it walks and gives a function up after 500 000, with a `Todo` diagnostic, so the function is left as written. The largest function in the upstream fixtures takes 719 steps. Seven rotated locals compile, eight are left as written.
`get`, `try_resolve_type` and `occurs_check` counted their steps but kept walking after the limit, and `unify` only looked at the count when one equation was done. One equation over a large phi could overshoot by the size of the whole type graph. Each walk now returns as soon as the count passes the limit. What a walk returns after that is never used: `unify` and the operand loop report the limit, `occurs_check` sends its caller into `try_resolve_type`, which returns `None`, and `infer_types` checks once more after the apply step, which has no error path of its own.
…ot change `get` and `try_resolve_type` built a new operand list for every phi they walked, also when no operand changed. A type that was already resolved came back as a fresh copy, so the snapshots `try_resolve_type` stores did not share nodes, and the address-keyed memos of the next walk counted the same structure again under new addresses. When every operand comes back as the operand itself, the walk now returns the phi it was given. The result is equal either way. Steps for the rotation input with the limit lifted: 4 locals 9 722 to 2 555, 8 locals 1 603 156 to 41 325, 12 locals 396 083 (did not finish before). The growth per local drops from 3.7 times to about 2.1 times. With the limit, 12 rotated locals compile and 13 or more are left as written, so the test of the limit uses 20.

Arc?? absolutely not. This is single-threaded.
### Problem - In `bun build --react-compiler`, memory doubles with each `if` that reassigns a local on one branch. 22 such statements take 1 GB, 24 take 4.1 GB, more abort with `memory allocation of 1073741824 bytes failed`. - ValidateExhaustiveDependencies (`collect_dependencies`, `src/react_compiler/validation/validate_exhaustive_dependencies.rs:494`) gives a phi the dependencies of its operands with `deps.extend(agg.iter().cloned())`. TS stores `new Set(deps)`, which holds each object once. Here a phi holds one copy per path that reaches it. ### Fix - A phi drops a dependency that is a copy of one in its list. `is_same_dependency` compares every field, because the port clones where TS shares one object. The `deps.length` test of TS still uses the count before the set (`deps_len`). - Correct because this is the set TS builds. `add_dependency` and the phi loop already skip a dependency they have seen, so the inferred dependencies do not change. - Verified: a new test in `test/bundler/transpiler/react-compiler.test.ts` (989 MB above an empty build on 1.4.3-canary.1, 20 MB with the fix). Also `react-compiler-fixtures.test.ts`. - Self-reviewed: 1 concern raised, 1 addressed. The first version also changed InferTypes, which #42395 already does, so that part is gone. ### Background - The pass compares what each `useMemo` and effect callback reads with its dependency array. Bun ships with both checks off, so it only collects. - A phi joins the SSA versions of a local where control flow merges. Its operands can repeat and can be other phis. - A `Temporary::Aggregate` is a value with several dependencies: an array literal, a function or a phi. <details><summary>Notes</summary> The input of the test (`statements` is 22, or 20 on a debug build): ```js export default function App(p) { let v = "init"; if (p.a0) { log(0); } else if (p.b0) { v = "s0"; } if (p.a1) { log(1); } else if (p.b1) { v = "s1"; } // ... return <div>{v}</div>; } ``` Each statement joins `v` from three paths, and two of them carry the phi of the statement before. All the values are string literals, so InferTypes resolves every phi to `Primitive` and takes 5 ms. Peak memory above an empty build, 1.4.3-canary.1 release build: | statements | time | memory | | --- | --- | --- | | 16 | 0.03 s | 4 MB | | 18 | 0.09 s | 56 MB | | 20 | 0.34 s | 272 MB | | 22 | 1.3 s | 1007 MB | | 24 | 4.9 s | 4081 MB | With the fix a debug build with ASAN takes 0.7 s and 20 MB for 22 statements, and 1.2 s and 36 MB for 40. At 200 statements the pass takes 93 ms of a 17 s debug build. The same growth shows with sequential or nested `try`/`catch` that reassign a local, because every instruction of a `try` block has an edge to the handler and the handler phi repeats one operand per edge. Why every field and not the structural `is_equal_temporary`: two different loads of `props.a` are two objects in TS and both stay in the `Set`, so `deps.length` counts two. Comparing only identifier and path would count one and turn the aggregate of a later phi into a single `Local`, which changes what a property load on it records. Equivalence: 600 generated components (nested `try`, `switch`, loops, `useMemo`, `useCallback`, effects, with `@validateExhaustiveMemoizationDependencies` and `@validateExhaustiveEffectDependencies:"all"` on) give the same diagnostics and the same output on main and on this branch. 249 of them report dependency errors. The three that differ do not finish on either build (InferTypes, see below) or panic the same way on both. #42395 fixes the same kind of growth in InferTypes. The two changes do not touch the same source files. A component that reassigns a local in nested `try` blocks needs both: with only #42395 a chain of 10 nested `try` blocks does not finish in this pass. The upstream Rust port has the same `Vec`. The upstream default for `validateExhaustiveMemoizationDependencies` is `true`. </details> <!-- robobun:evidence:begin --> --- **[human-review]** gate passed · iteration 0 · 2 files touched <details><summary>fails on main (without fix)</summary> ```console ASAN without fix: 1 FAILED $ BUN_DEBUG_QUIET_LOGS=1 bun scripts/build.ts --profile=debug --quiet test "--reporter=junit" "--reporter-outfile=/tmp/pr_gate.xml" test/bundler/transpiler/react-compiler.test.ts bun test v1.4.3 (6a92015) test/bundler/transpiler/react-compiler.test.ts: (pass) bundler > react-compiler/SimpleComponent [695.73ms] (pass) bundler > react-compiler/ComponentWithHooks [278.57ms] (pass) bundler > react-compiler/ObjectPatternRestInProps [281.28ms] (pass) bundler > react-compiler/UnderscoreAndDollarComponentTags [276.92ms] (pass) bundler > react-compiler/OutputModeDefaultsByTarget-Browser [131.06ms] (pass) bundler > react-compiler/OutputModeDefaultsByTarget-Bun [114.13ms] (pass) bundler > react-compiler/FullstackHtmlImportCompilesClientGraphInClientMode [362.08ms] (pass) bundler > react-compiler/OutputModeExplicitSsrOverridesTarget [102.95ms] (pass) bundler > react-compiler/SsrObjectMethodShorthand [709.56ms] (pass) bundler > react-compiler/OutputModeIgnoredWhenCompilerDisabled-Client [106.50ms] (pass) bundler > react-compiler/OutputModeIgnoredWhenCompilerDisabled-Ssr [104.98ms] (pass) bundler > react-compiler/BundledReactPreservesImportRefs [398.18ms] (pass) bundler > reac ... A function is compiled on one thread, so the count does not need to be atomic. `Type` is now `!Send + !Sync`. The only place that needed those is the process-wide `BASE` registry of built-in shapes and globals, which holds no `Phi` and is read-only after it is built, so `BaseRegistries` asserts `Send` and `Sync` itself.

In `@src/react_compiler/typeinference/infer_types.rs`:
- Line 1283: Update the Function return_type handling in remove_phi_operand so a
return type that resolves to v_id, directly or through aliases, is replaced with
the existing conservative cycle fallback instead of recursing into a TypeVar.
Add regression coverage for functions returning themselves and returning an
alias of themselves, ensuring later get calls do not recurse indefinitely.

…liasingEffects The fixpoint merged two sets with a linear search for each value, so a merge of two sets of N values cost N squared. The merge now uses a scratch bitmap and keeps the insertion order, so the output does not change. 100 locals rotated in a nested loop go from 21.4 s to 5.9 s on a debug build.
