In Node https.Server is a distinct constructor (it extends tls.Server),
so https.Server !== http.Server, server instanceof https.Server holds for
an https server and server.constructor === https.Server. Bun exported
Server: http.Server, which breaks code that branches on the class (test
doubles such as jest.spyOn(https.Server.prototype, "listen") land on
http.Server, and x instanceof https.Server is true for plain http servers).

Repro:

const http = require("node:http"), https = require("node:https");
console.log(https.Server === http.Server, http.createServer() instanceof https.Server);
// Node: false false Bun 1.4.0: true true

https.Server is now a constructor whose prototype chain sits on
http.Server.prototype; it applies the ALPN defaults createServer already
applied and then delegates to http.Server. createServer returns
new Server(...), so its behaviour is unchanged apart from the class identity.

Repro:

    const http = require("node:http"), https = require("node:https");
    console.log(https.Server === http.Server, http.createServer() instanceof https.Server);

`https.Server` is now a constructor whose prototype chain sits on
`http.Server.prototype`; it applies the ALPN defaults `createServer` already

`new Server(...)`, so its behaviour is unchanged apart from the class identity.

Walkthrough

The HTTPS module now provides a dedicated Server constructor. It delegates HTTP initialization, configures ALPN values, supports calls with or without new, and is used by createServer. Tests cover inheritance and construction behavior.

Changes

HTTPS Server constructor

Layer / File(s) Summary
Server constructor and export
src/js/node/https.ts
Adds the callable Server constructor, delegates initialization to http.Server.$call, applies ALPN conversion, and exports it as https.Server.
Server inheritance and construction tests
test/js/node/http/node-https-server-class.test.ts
Verifies HTTP inheritance, createServer results, ALPNProtocols, cleanup, and construction with or without new.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7aab8

HTTPS now exposes its own Server constructor while retaining HTTP-server inheritance and expected construction behavior. The covered compatibility behavior is ready to merge.

This change also fixes a leak in stoppable and in the copy of it inside @apollo/server (ApolloServerPluginDrainHttpServer, startStandaloneServer).

Both packages select the event that tracks sockets with server instanceof https.Server ? "secureConnection" : "connection". On Bun a plain http.Server passes that check. secureConnection never fires for it, so the package never installs its socket.once("close", ...) cleanup. The request handler still stores each req.socket in its map, so every connection stays in memory.

I ran stoppable@1.1.0 on a plain http.createServer() and made 100 requests, each on a new connection that closes:

runtime entries left in server._pendingSockets
Bun 1.4.3 100
Node v26.3.0 0
main (a749e0a) with this branch applied 0

With this branch applied, https.createServer(opts), new https.Server(opts) and https.Server(opts) each still serve TLS.

Script
const http = require("http");
const stoppable = require("stoppable");

const server = stoppable(http.createServer((req, res) => res.end("ok")), 0);

function get(port) {
  return new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
    http
      .get({ port, host: "127.0.0.1", agent: false, headers: { connection: "close" } }, res => {
        res.resume();
        res.on("end", resolve);
      })
      .on("error", reject);
  });
}

server.listen(0, "127.0.0.1", async () => {
  const { port } = server.address();
  for (let i = 0; i < 100; i++) await get(port);
  await new Promise(r => setTimeout(r, 100));
  console.log(server._pendingSockets.size);
  server.stop(() => {});
});
