What does this PR do?

Supersedes #40408. WTF::StringImpl refcounts are atomic, but two things are per-thread: Identifier::fromString atomizes a non-atom impl in place into the current thread's atom table, and the final deref() of an atom removes it from the current thread's table (RELEASE_ASSERT if it isn't there). So an atomizable impl that two VMs can both reach is unsafe even if nobody "drops it off-thread": one VM atomizes it, another then uses a foreign atom as a property key (a lookup by the same text misses), and whichever thread drops the last ref aborts. Sharing is sound when the impl is prepared for it — pre-hashed and marked never-atomize (each VM's table then takes its own copy on key use), which postMessage's string fast path already did via toCrossThreadShareable. This PR adds the Rust spelling, String::make_thread_shareable() (BunString__makeThreadShareable: in place for a plain impl, isolated copy for an atom/symbol/substring), and applies it to the places that shared without it:

  • URL.createObjectURL — the process-global registry stored the Blob's name impl (a JS string from the creating worker) plus its global_this, and gave clones to every VM that resolved the URL. Repro (crashes 1.4.0 every run): worker A creates named Files and object URLs, worker B uses fetch(url).blob().name as a key and GCs, A revokes → panic: abort(). The entry now make_thread_shareable()s the name once and has a null global; each resolve stamps the resolving VM's global.
  • Structured clone, object fast paths — property-name impls were stored with plain isolatedCopy(); the dense-array receive path atomized them in place, and a BroadcastChannel message has many receivers. Repro (crashes/hangs 1.4.0 every run, 12 lines): bc.postMessage([{ ["key"+r]: r }]) to two workers that read the keys. Property keys are now stored with threadShareableCopy in both object fast paths (simple object and dense array of objects), and all three receive sites use the stored key directly (the simple-object path drops its per-receive re-copy).
  • bun build --compile + Workers — Bun.embeddedFiles / Bun.file(embedded) duped one cached Blob (name impl + first VM's global_this) into every Worker, and text modules / module source shared one cached impl per file, lazily initialized without synchronization. Repro (1.4.0): in a Worker, p[file.name] = 1; p[sameTextBuiltAtRuntime] is undefined (main: 1). Both caches are now OnceLocks holding a make_thread_shareable()d string; name/global are per VM.
  • fetch({ unix }) bit-copied a possibly JS-backed Utf8Bytes onto the HTTP thread (kept correct only by two ManuallyDrops); the tasklet now owns the bytes and the client borrows &[u8]. Worker Bun.$ argv copies the parent's option strings like process.argv does. Bundler plugin namespace strings are isolated before the bundle thread reads them.

Found while making the shared Store honest: new File([a], "b.txt") renamed a (a.name === "b.txt"; Node keeps "a.txt") because it wrote the name into the shared store. A File now carries its own name and never writes it into the store (new File([], "")/new File(["x"], "") both report "" like browsers), Blob::get_file_name is name-first — so a FormData entry's filename, the auto Content-Disposition filename and the loader picked for import(objectURL) follow file.name (the store path is still what gets opened), and Blob__getFileNameString returns an owned string instead of a view into the store's bytes — and Store.is_all_ascii is atomic since stores are shared across threads.

Naming: String::to_thread_safe() is now thread_isolated_copy() (WTF isolatedCopy: a private copy for one other owner — still what Bun.file(path)/S3 stores use for their path) with is_thread_isolated(); the work-pool hand-off is make_thread_isolated() / ThreadIsolated<T> / PathLike::ThreadIsolatedString (unchanged behaviour: keep a non-atom impl, else copy the bytes); the new many-holders primitive is String::make_thread_shareable() / is_thread_shareable() (C++ Bun::makeThreadShareable, threadShareableCopy, toCrossThreadShareable), used only at the object-URL registry and the --compile graph caches. StandaloneModuleGraph lookups that no longer mutate go through get_ref()/find_ref().

How did you verify your code works?

New tests, each failing on 1.4.0 and passing here: worker_blob.test.ts (object URL across workers — abort), broadcast-channel.test.ts (arrays of objects and objects to two workers — abort), bundler_compile.test.ts compile/EmbeddedFileNamesPerThread (embedded file name and text module as keys in a Worker — wrong value), blob.test.ts (new File([file], name) does not rename the source), bunstring-thread-shareable.test.ts (ref balance of thread_isolated_copy / make_thread_shareable). Debug+ASAN: worker, worker_blob, worker_threads, broadcast-channel, structured-clone, fetch, fetch.unix, blob, body, FormData, serve, shell, fs suites match main.

WTF::StringImpl refcounts are atomic, but two operations are per-thread:
`Identifier::fromString` atomizes a non-atom impl *in place* into the
current thread's AtomStringTable, and the final `deref()` of an atom removes
it from the current thread's table (RELEASE_ASSERT if it is not there). So
an impl that two VMs can both reach is unsafe even if nobody drops it
off-thread: one VM atomizes it, the other uses a foreign atom as a property
key (lookups by the same text miss) and whichever thread drops it last
aborts. Four places did this:

- `URL.createObjectURL`: the process-global registry stored the Blob's
  `name` impl (a JS string from the creating worker) and `global_this`, and
  handed clones of that impl to every VM that resolved the URL. The entry
  now keeps the name as bytes and a null global; each resolve gets its own
  impl and the resolving VM's global.
- structured clone's dense-array fast path stored property-name impls with
  `isolatedCopy()` and every receiver atomized them in place; with
  BroadcastChannel one message has many receivers. Keys are now stored with
  `isolatedCopyForSharing` (pre-hashed, never-atomize) in all three object
  fast paths, so each receiver's atom table takes a copy; the simple-object
  receive path drops its extra re-copy.
- `bun build --compile`: `Bun.embeddedFiles`/`Bun.file(embedded)` duped one
  cached Blob (name impl + first VM's global) into every Worker, and text
  modules / module source shared one cached impl per file across VMs. The
  cache now holds only the immortal store; name/global are per VM, and
  `to_wtf_string` returns a fresh zero-copy external impl per call.
- `fetch({ unix })` bit-copied a possibly JS-backed `Utf8Bytes` onto the HTTP
  thread; the tasklet now owns the bytes and the client borrows them.
  Worker `Bun.$` argv copies the parent's option strings like `process.argv`
  already does. Bundler plugin namespace strings are isolated before the
  bundle thread reads them.

`isThreadSafe()` additionally rejects substring and external impls, and the
async-fs path that keeps a JS string's own 8-bit impl marks it
never-atomize + pre-hashed so the JS thread cannot later atomize it in place
while the work pool holds it.

Walkthrough

Changes

The pull request separates isolated and shareable string APIs, updates Blob and standalone graph ownership, restores VM globals during object URL resolution, migrates asynchronous ownership to ThreadIsolated, and changes Unix socket paths to borrowed or tasklet-owned byte slices.

Cross-thread data ownership

Layer / File(s) Summary
String transfer APIs and callers
src/bun_core/string/mod.rs, src/jsc/bindings/BunString.*, src/jsc/node_path.rs, src/runtime/node/*, src/jsc/bindings/webcore/*
String handling now distinguishes isolated copies from multi-VM shareable strings. Atom, symbol, and substring cases use explicit isolation rules.
Blob stores and standalone graph access
src/jsc/webcore_types.rs, src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs, src/runtime/webcore/blob/Store.rs, src/standalone_graph/*, src/runtime/api/standalone_graph_jsc.rs, src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs
Blob names and store paths use separate APIs. ASCII metadata uses atomic state. Standalone graph files use immutable access and lazy caches.
Async resources and descriptor transfer
src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs, src/runtime/crypto/PBKDF2.rs, src/runtime/node/node_crypto_binding.rs, src/runtime/api/JSTranspiler.rs, src/runtime/api/bun/subprocess/*
Asynchronous jobs use ThreadIsolated wrappers. Memfd ownership transfers through Stdio::take_memfd before readable construction.
Object URL and regression coverage
src/runtime/webcore/ObjectURLRegistry.rs, test/js/web/workers/worker_blob.test.ts, test/js/web/fetch/blob.test.ts, test/bundler/bundler_compile.test.ts, test/js/bun/util/bunstring-thread-shareable.test.ts, test/js/web/broadcastchannel/broadcast-channel.test.ts
Object URL entries store VM-independent duplicates and restore the target global during resolution. Tests cover worker Blob URLs, embedded files, file names, string refcounts, and BroadcastChannel delivery.

Unix socket path ownership

Layer / File(s) Summary
Unix socket path lifetime flow

I re-reviewed after 3a472a5 and didn't find any new issues. The SAFETY-comment drift I flagged last round is resolved — both ObjectURLRegistry::Entry::init and standalone_graph_jsc::shared_blob now call name.share(), and the unsafe impl Send for Blob comment matches. Given the scope (new String::share() / BunString__share primitive, cross-VM atom-table invariants, unix_socket_path moved from owned to borrowed under the 'a lifetime, Store.is_all_ascii made atomic, File constructor name semantics), a human pass is still warranted.

Checked this round: BunString__share vs. toCrossThreadShareable agree on the copy predicate (atom/symbol/substring); resolve_and_dupe clones a share()'d name so no per-resolve isolation is needed; FetchTasklet::clear_data drops self.http before the borrowed buffers; into_utf8_with_string_thread_safe's new share() path keeps the 8-bit-ASCII zero-copy contract.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

29 files across bun_core::String, BunString.cpp, SerializedScriptValue.cpp, ObjectURLRegistry, StandaloneModuleGraph, Blob/Store, the HTTP client (AsyncHTTP/HTTPClient/FetchTasklet), and four test files. The latest commit (3a472a5) consolidates the earlier per-site fixes into one primitive, String::share() / BunString__share: pre-hash + setNeverAtomize in place for a plain impl, isolated copy for atom/symbol/substring. ObjectURLRegistry::Entry, the standalone-graph File::wtf_string cache, and the standalone-graph blob template now all share() once and hand out plain clone()s; the structured-clone object fast paths use isolatedCopyForSharing for property keys; WTFStringImpl__isThreadSafe additionally rejects substrings.

Alongside the string work: HTTPClient::unix_socket_path becomes &'a [u8] borrowed from the FetchTasklet-owned Box<[u8]> (dropping two ManuallyDrop hacks); Store::is_all_ascii becomes an atomic tri-state; new File([blob], name) writes blob.name instead of the shared store's stored_name; Blob::get_file_name() is now name-first and returns Utf8Bytes; Blob__getFileNameString returns an owned BunString and its C++ callers now transferToWTFString().

Security risks

None user-facing. The hazard class is memory safety under concurrency (per-thread atom tables, RELEASE_ASSERT(wasRemoved), foreign-atom key misses), not input validation or auth. The unix_socket_path refactor changes ownership from "owned by the HTTP-thread clone via ptr::read" to "borrowed from the JS-thread tasklet"; the new clear_data ordering (drop self.http before the buffers) is what keeps that sound, and the 'a lifetime on HTTPClient now covers it.

Level of scrutiny

High. This is exactly the REVIEW.md "most-blocked category": cross-thread lifetime of StringImpls, new unsafe impl Send/Sync justifications, a new FFI entry point that mutates a WTF impl in place, and a lifetime-erased borrow (Interned::assume) for the socket path. The PR has already been through several review rounds and each fix looks correct, but the blast radius (every --compile Worker, every BroadcastChannel object post, every object URL across workers) plus the number of coupled invariants argues for a maintainer read-through of the final String::share() shape.

Other factors

All prior inline findings (mine and CodeRabbit's) are addressed and the SAFETY comments are now consistent with the code. Four new tests each reproduce a pre-PR crash/wrong-value and pass here. The bug hunt on this revision found nothing new. The one open inline thread (my SAFETY-comment note on webcore_types.rs) is now stale — 3a472a5 rewrote that comment and both call sites to match.

I reviewed this PR across four rounds and found no remaining issues. Because it introduces a new cross-VM string-sharing primitive (String::share() / BunString__share), rewrites several unsafe impl Send/Sync invariants, and changes user-visible File name semantics, a human look would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed: the share()/isolatedCopyForSharing atom-table contract against WTF's in-place atomization; ObjectURLRegistry/standalone-graph template Blob ownership (null global, shared name, per-VM dupe stamping); the unix_socket_path lifetime refactor and clear_data drop ordering; is_all_ascii atomicity; and that jsdom_file_construct/Blob__setAsFile no longer write into a shared Bytes.stored_name.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR introduces String::share() (Rust) / BunString__share (C++) as the single primitive for making a WTF::StringImpl safe to hand to any number of VMs: pre-hashed, marked never-atomize, and isolated if it was already an atom/symbol/substring. It then applies that primitive to every place that was sharing an atomizable impl across threads without preparation — URL.createObjectURL's process-global registry, the structured-clone object fast paths (BroadcastChannel with N receivers), and bun build --compile embedded-file/text-module caches — each with a reproducer that crashes or miscompares on 1.4.0. Along the way it converts fetch({ unix })'s socket path from a bit-copied Utf8Bytes to an owned Box<[u8]> on the tasklet with a borrowed &[u8] on the client, makes Store.is_all_ascii atomic, moves File::cached_blob/wtf_string to OnceLock, and stops new File([a], name) from renaming a via the shared store.

Security risks

None identified. The changes tighten cross-thread ownership rather than loosening any check; no auth/crypto/permission surface is touched.

Level of scrutiny

High. This is squarely in REVIEW.md's most-blocked category — native memory safety, cross-thread lifetimes, unsafe impl Send/Sync justifications, and JSC atom-table semantics. The share() primitive becomes load-bearing for every future cross-VM string producer, the Blob Send/Sync SAFETY comments now enumerate specific invariants that must stay true, and the File name change (get_file_name now name-first, Blob__setAsFile writes blob.name instead of bytes.stored_name) is a user-visible semantic change with FormData/multipart implications. 29 files across core string handling, JSC bindings, HTTP client, and the standalone graph is well past the "simple/mechanical" threshold.

Other factors

Four prior review rounds (CodeRabbit + three of mine) surfaced and resolved: the toCrossThreadShareable external-impl guard, the clear_data drop-ordering hazard for unix_socket_path, the lossy into_utf8→clone_utf8 roundtrip in the registry entry (now uses share() directly), the subprocess-test stderr-pipe convention, and a stale DEAD-name claim in the Send SAFETY comment (superseded by 3a472a5). Every fix ships with a failing-on-1.4.0 test. The remaining scope — a new cross-cutting primitive plus rewritten unsafe invariants across several subsystems — is exactly what the guidelines say a human should sign off on.

Do not use Status::Rejected to decide whether the body was consumed. FileSink::pipe_stream returns a promise for NativeWireResult::Wired; wire_native_sink locks the stream and can send data to FileSink::write. A later WriteResult::Err is stored in stream_error, and on_close rejects stream_done. Therefore, a rejected promise can represent a partially consumed stream. In write_file_internal, that rejection leaves BodyValue::Locked, so a later consumer can treat the body as unused. Track native stream acquisition separately from destination-open failure, then set BodyValue::Used when the stream was acquired.

Additional findings (outside current diff — PR may have been updated during review):

  • 🟡 src/jsc/bindings/BunString.cpp:218-230 — BunString__share's in-place branch unconditionally calls impl->setNeverAtomize() (a non-atomic RMW of m_hashAndFlags) even when the flag is already set, so re-registering a resolved object URL — whose name is a clone of the entry's already-share()d impl — writes to an impl other threads already hold. register() runs Entry::init before taking the map lock, so two workers can be in this write concurrently; it's a same-value race (no release-build corruption) but per REVIEW.md "benign same-value races are still UB" and TSan will flag it. Gate the else if on !impl->neverAtomize() so a second share() on an already-prepared impl is a pure read.

    Extended reasoning...

    What the bug is

    BunString__share (src/jsc/bindings/BunString.cpp:218-230) has two branches for a WTF-backed impl:

    if (impl->isAtom() || impl->isSymbol() || impl->isSubString()) {
        str->impl.wtf = isolatedCopyForSharing(*impl).releaseImpl().leakRef();
        impl->deref();
    } else if (!impl->isStatic()) {
        impl->hash();
        impl->setNeverAtomize();
    }

    The second branch mutates the impl in place. setNeverAtomize() is a non-atomic m_hashAndFlags |= flag read-modify-write, and m_hashAndFlags is not atomic — the PR's own comment above isolatedCopyForSharing says exactly that ("Otherwise the receivers race the lazy m_hashAndFlags update"). The design assumption is that share() runs once, on the producing thread, before the impl is handed out. But this PR introduces a path where share() is called on an impl that other threads already hold.

    The specific code path

    Commit 3a472a5 (this PR) changed the ObjectURL registry so an Entry stores a share()d name and every resolve_and_dupe clones it (dupe_with_content_type → name: self.name.clone(), which for a WTF-backed String just refs the same StringImpl X). If a resolved blob is then re-registered via URL.createObjectURL, Entry::init (ObjectURLRegistry.rs:42-46) runs blob.name.with_mut(|name| name.share()) on that clone — i.e. on X again.

    register() calls Entry::init(blob) before self.map.lock(), so nothing serializes two threads hitting share() on X concurrently. On an already-prepared impl, X is not atom/symbol/substring/static, so both fall into the else if branch and both execute impl->setNeverAtomize().

    Step-by-step proof

    1. Worker A: const f = new File(['x'], 'ignored'); f.name = 'nm' + Math.random(); const u = URL.createObjectURL(f); → Entry::init dupes (name refs impl X), then share() on X — X now has its hash computed and the neverAtomize bit set. The entry is stored under the map lock.
    2. Worker B: const b = resolveObjectURL(u); → resolve_and_dupe returns a blob whose name is X.clone() (same impl, +1 ref).
    3. Worker C: const c = resolveObjectURL(u); → same, name refs X.
    4. Worker B: URL.createObjectURL(b) → register() → Entry::init(b) runs (outside the lock) → dupes b (name refs X) → share() on X → X passes the atom/symbol/substring check, is not static → impl->setNeverAtomize() writes m_hashAndFlags.
    5. Worker C, concurrent with 4: URL.createObjectURL(c) → same path → impl->setNeverAtomize() writes m_hashAndFlags.

    Steps 4 and 5 are concurrent non-atomic RMWs on X->m_hashAndFlags. There is also a read/write variant: step 4 concurrent with any thread using X as a property key (which reads m_hashAndFlags via neverAtomize()/hash()).

    Why this is new to this PR

    Before commit 3a472a5, resolve_and_dupe handed each resolver a per-thread isolated copy of the name (or its own bytes), so re-registering a resolved blob called share() on a thread-local impl. After 3a472a5, every resolve clones the shared impl and re-registering share()s the shared impl. The other new share() caller (standalone_graph_jsc::shared_blob) runs inside a OnceLock::get_or_init on a freshly-clone_utf8'd impl and cannot re-enter this way. toCrossThreadShareable has the same in-place-mutate shape, but its structured-clone callers always start from a value owned by the sending thread.

    Why existing safeguards don't prevent it

    String::share()'s doc comment (src/bun_core/string/mod.rs:519-521) says "Make a WTF-backed impl safe to hand to any number of threads/VMs … hand it out with clone()" — it does not warn that calling share() again on a handed-out clone from another thread races. Entry::init cannot tell whether the incoming blob's name is an already-shared impl vs. a fresh JS string.

    Impact

    Low. Both writers store the value already present (the neverAtomize bit was set in step 1, and hash() is a pure read once the hash is set), so no observable corruption on any target hardware. But REVIEW.md is explicit: "benign same-value races are still UB". TSan would flag it on a re-register-from-two-workers repro. It is technically UB per the C++ memory model.

    How to fix

    Make the in-place branch idempotent without a write when already prepared:

    } else if (!impl->isStatic() && !impl->neverAtomize()) {
        impl->hash();
        impl->setNeverAtomize();
    }

    The neverAtomize flag being set implies hash() already ran (both writers of neverAtomize — this branch and isolatedCopyForSharing — pre-hash), so skipping both is correct. This also matches the existing philosophy of toCrossThreadShareable's guards. Alternatively, Entry::init could isolate the name (to_thread_safe()) before share() so the mutated impl is always thread-local at share time — but that reintroduces a per-register copy the share() design was meant to avoid.

Make Store::data_mut unsafe or enforce exclusive ownership.

At Line [1004], this safe method returns &mut Data from &RefPtr<Store>. Two cloned RefPtr<Store> values can call it concurrently, and Rust cannot enforce the stated caller-only invariant. This can create overlapping mutable references and undefined behavior. Make the operation unsafe and audit callers, or move mutation behind an exclusive JS-thread-only API.

Do not implement Send and Sync for every Store variant.

Data::S3 owns Option<Rc<S3Credentials>>, and Rc is neither Send nor Sync. The atomic Store::ref_count does not make this nested owner thread-safe. Remove these blanket implementations or isolate S3 stores from thread-crossing handles.

🟡 nit: IsAllAscii::get/set use Ordering::Relaxed without a comment justifying the weakened ordering (REVIEW.md: "default to seq_cst and comment any weakened ordering")

Extended reasoning...

The new IsAllAscii atomic uses Relaxed for both load and store with no inline comment naming why weaker-than-seq_cst is sound. REVIEW.md's thread-affinity rule (repeated in this PR's own REVIEW.md edit) explicitly requires "default to seq_cst and comment any weakened ordering". Relaxed is in fact correct here — the flag is a monotonic hint that guards no other memory (a stale None just means the reader re-scans the bytes) — but per the repo rule the justification belongs at the load/store site, not implied by the struct doc. Relative to base, the field was a plain Option<bool> mutated only on the JS thread; this PR is what introduces the cross-thread atomic, so the ordering choice needs the one-line rationale.

Verification: nit — src/jsc/webcore_types.rs:553-568 (added by this PR) uses Ordering::Relaxed for both the load (line 556) and the store (line 565) with no comment naming why the weakened ordering is sound. The struct doc at lines 548-549 ("Tri-state … learned lazily by whichever thread's dupe reads or writes the full store first") describes what the flag is and who writes it, but does not address the memo
