LGTM — the follow-up commit addresses the regression I flagged: Blob__getFileNameString now prefers the per-Blob name, so the defaulted m_fileName round-trips through Blob__setAsFile unchanged when no filename argument is given.
What was reviewed:
- Verified
OwnedStringCell::setderefs the previous value, so overwritingthis.nameinBlob__setAsFiledoesn't leak the old string. - Verified
toWTFString(ZeroCopy)on aWTFStringImpl-tagged borrow takes its own ref (BunString.cpp:839), so returningthis.name.get()fromBlob__getFileNameStringis safe. - Confirmed
Blob__getFileNameString's only callers are the two FormData default-filename sites in JSDOMFormData.cpp; the behavior change (per-Blob name instead of store path) also fixes the multipartfilename=fornew File([Bun.file(p)], name), which the new test now covers.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
Two extern "C" functions in src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs change: Blob__setAsFile now writes path_str into the per-Blob name cell (in addition to the existing stored_name fallback), and Blob__getFileNameString now prefers this.name over the store-derived path. Two new tests in FormData.test.ts cover the filename-override case (append/set/get/getAll/iteration, shared File under two names, original not mutated) and the no-filename case (File-backed and .name-setter Files keep their user-visible name in both .get() and the multipart body).
Security risks
None. This is a spec-compliance fix to which display name a FormData entry reports; no parsing of untrusted input, no auth/crypto, no new allocation paths.
Level of scrutiny
Medium — it touches the Rust/C++ FFI boundary and refcounted string handles, so I traced ownership: OwnedStringCell::set derefs the replaced value (mod.rs:2465), dupe_ref() provides the new +1, and toWTFString(ZeroCopy) on the WTFStringImpl branch constructs a WTF::String from the raw impl pointer (BunString.cpp:839), which takes its own ref rather than adopting the borrow. The pre-existing from_bytes fallthrough already used the same borrow-then-ZeroCopy pattern.
Other factors
My previous review flagged that the first revision would clobber .name on File/S3-backed Files appended without a filename. The follow-up commit fixes that at the source (Blob__getFileNameString now returns what the dupe already carries) and adds a regression test asserting both .get().name and the serialized Content-Disposition line. I confirmed via grep that JSDOMFormData.cpp:316/:479 are the only callers of Blob__getFileNameString, so the semantic change is scoped to exactly this default-filename path. The explicit-"" override remains a pre-existing gap (null and empty collapse in Bun::toString), acknowledged and left out of scope; the reworded comment no longer misstates it. PR evidence shows the new test fails on main and passes on the branch under both debug+ASAN and release.

LGTM — the follow-up in 3882094 resolves the regression I flagged: Blob__getFileNameString now prefers the per-Blob name, so the defaulted m_fileName round-trips through Blob__setAsFile unchanged for File/S3-backed and .name-reassigned Files, and the second new test locks that in (including the multipart body).
Also checked: OwnedStringCell::set derefs the previous value so this.name.set(path_str.dupe_ref()) is refcount-balanced; the borrowed return from this.name.get() matches the existing BunString::from_bytes branch's lifetime contract with toWTFString(ZeroCopy); Blob__getFileNameString's only callers are the two append/set default paths in JSDOMFormData.cpp; and the shared-store stored_name write remains gated on is_empty() so two entries backed by one File keep distinct per-Blob names without touching the caller's original.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
Two extern "C" functions in src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs (~14 lines of code + comments) and two new tests in test/js/web/html/FormData.test.ts (~78 lines). Blob__setAsFile now writes the entry filename into the per-Blob name field (which get_name_string() prefers over the shared store's stored_name), and Blob__getFileNameString now consults that same per-Blob name first so the no-filename-argument default round-trips unchanged.
Security risks
None. No untrusted input parsing, allocation sizing, or path handling changes. The multipart serializer already read m_fileName directly; this only changes what get()/getAll()/iteration report and what the C++ side defaults m_fileName to when the argument is omitted.
Level of scrutiny
Medium — Web-compat correctness fix in a native FFI boundary with refcount and shared-store implications. I traced: (1) OwnedStringCell::set derefs the previous value (src/bun_core/string/mod.rs:2443-2464), so dupe_ref() + set() is balanced; (2) the borrowed this.name.get() return matches the pre-existing BunString::from_bytes branch's contract — blobValue (RefPtr) keeps the dupe alive across toWTFString(ZeroCopy); (3) Blob__getFileNameString has exactly the two callers claimed (JSDOMFormData.cpp:316/:479); (4) dupe_with_content_type clones name (webcore_types.rs:380), so the FormData-held dupe carries the user-visible name into the new priority branch.
Prior review resolution
My earlier finding was that the !path_str.is_empty() guard would clobber .name on File/S3-backed Files appended without a filename, because Blob__getFileNameString read only the store. Commit 3882094 fixes that at the source: Blob__getFileNameString now returns the per-Blob name when set, so the defaulted m_fileName equals what the dupe already carries and the Blob__setAsFile write is a no-op. The second new test covers exactly the repro I gave (new File([Bun.file(p)], name) and a .name-reassigned File, both without a filename argument) plus the multipart Content-Disposition line, which was independently wrong on main for those inputs.
Other factors
The explicit-"" override case is pre-existing behavior on main and correctly scoped out; the reworded comment no longer claims empty means "not supplied". CodeRabbit withdrew its finding on the same point. Evidence block shows both new tests failing on main and passing on the PR under debug+ASAN and release. All inline threads are resolved.

This PR and #32431 both conflict with main now. I have a rebased branch on current main that covers both fixes in one change: main...robobun/c6c60a0e/formdata-entry-filename (cb99498). Diff summary: I did not open a second PR. Rebase this one onto that branch, or tell me to open it as its own PR. |
The XHR 'create an entry' algorithm wraps any Blob (including a File) in a new File named `filename` when that argument is given. DOMFormData stores the override on the per-entry C++ wrapper, and multipart serialization reads it from there, but converting the entry back to JS goes through Blob__setAsFile, which skipped the write whenever the Blob already had a name. So `fd.get(name).name` kept the original File name. Drop the `get_file_name().is_none()` guard. When no filename argument is given the C++ side defaults it from Blob__getFileNameString, which already returns the per-Blob name, so the write is a no-op in that case. The Blob being mutated is the FormData-owned dupe, so the caller's File is untouched.

LGTM — the no-filename regression I flagged earlier is now explicitly covered by the second test (new File([Bun.file(path)], "display.txt") appended without a filename, asserted on both .name and the multipart Content-Disposition header), and the inaccurate comment was replaced with a spec link.
What was reviewed:
- Traced the append/set path:
Blob::create→Blob__dupeFromJSproduces a per-entry dupe, and when no filename is passed C++ defaults it viaBlob__getFileNameString→get_name_string(), which already prefers the per-Blobnameover the store path — so writing that value back intothis.nameis idempotent for the no-override case and the correct override otherwise. this.name.set(...)on a live name follows the same pattern as the existingset_namesetter (Blob.rs:2028), so no new ownership concern.- Explicit-empty-string filename (
append(k, file, "")) is still not spec-exact, but that's pre-existing behavior unchanged by this diff.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR removes a single guard (&& this.get_file_name().is_none()) from Blob__setAsFile in src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs so that the third filename argument to FormData.append/set overrides the entry's .name even when the value is already a File with its own name, per XHR "create an entry" step 3. Two tests are added to test/js/web/html/FormData.test.ts: one for the override case (covering get/getAll/iteration, two entries sharing one File under different names, non-mutation of the caller's original, type preservation, distinct instance) and one for the no-override case (a Bun.file-backed File with a display name and a File whose .name was reassigned, plus the serialized multipart body).
Security risks
None. This is a spec-conformance fix to how a filename string is propagated onto a per-entry Blob dupe. No parsing of untrusted input, no auth/crypto, no resource limits. The mutated Blob is the FormData-held dupe (created via Blob__dupeFromJS in Blob::create(JSValue)), never the caller's object — the first test asserts this negative contract explicitly.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate for a Web API FFI boundary, but the actual code delta is one line. In my earlier review I flagged a regression risk for the no-filename path with file-backed Files; the reworked PR now includes a dedicated test for exactly that scenario (JS-visible .name and multipart Content-Disposition), which is the right way to close the concern. Tracing the current code: when argument2 is undefined, JSDOMFormData.cpp defaults filename from Blob__getFileNameString, which delegates to get_name_string() — that already returns the per-Blob name before falling back to store_path(), so Blob__setAsFile writes back the same value in the no-override case and the intended override otherwise. The unconditional this.name.set(path_str.clone()) matches the existing overwrite pattern in set_name (Blob.rs:2028), so no new lifetime/leak concern is introduced.
Other factors
The tests follow repo conventions (tempDir with using, composite .toEqual, existing test file, spec link in the comment). The remaining spec gap — an explicit "" filename should produce a File named "", but !path_str.is_empty() skips the write — is pre-existing behavior this PR does not change, and I already noted it previously. No outstanding CHANGES_REQUESTED reviews; the only open bot thread is a CodeRabbit COMMENTED note on the test file that predates the last commit.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
LGTM — the regression case I flagged earlier (new File([Bun.file(p)], "display.txt") appended without a filename) is now covered by the second test, and I've traced Blob__getFileNameString → get_name_string() on current main to confirm it returns the per-instance name before falling back to the store path, so the write in Blob__setAsFile is a no-op on that path as the description claims.
Checked: both append2Body and set in JSDOMFormData.cpp default the filename from Blob__getFileNameString when arg 2 is undefined, so the guard removal is symmetric across both entry points; blob.cpp:toJS writes to the FormData-held dupe and then Blob__dupes again for the returned JS value, so the caller's original File is never touched (matches the origA.name assertions). The explicit-empty-string case is pre-existing behavior and correctly noted as out of scope.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
One-line change in src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs: drops the && this.get_file_name().is_none() guard from Blob__setAsFile so a non-empty entry filename passed to FormData.append/set always overrides the entry's File.name, per WHATWG XHR "create an entry" step 3. Two new tests in test/js/web/html/FormData.test.ts: one exercises the override across append/set, get/getAll/iteration, multipart serialization, and non-mutation of the caller's original; the other guards the no-filename path (including a Bun.file()-backed File and a post-construction .name reassignment), which is precisely the regression scenario my earlier inline comment raised.
Security risks
None. No parsing of untrusted input, no auth, no allocation-size arithmetic. The FFI signature is unchanged and the BunString clone is the existing ref-on-Clone semantics.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate for a Web-compat fix. I re-traced the concern from my 2026-07-22 comment against current main: Blob__getFileNameString (Blob.rs:4083) now delegates to get_name_string() (Blob.rs:1996), which returns self.name whenever its tag is non-Dead and only falls back to store_path() otherwise. Since dupes copy name, the C++ default for an omitted filename argument (JSDOMFormData.cpp:311/474) is exactly the value Blob__setAsFile will write back — a no-op — so removing the guard does not clobber user-visible names on the no-filename path. The added test pins this. The remaining !path_str.is_empty() gap for an explicit "" argument is pre-existing on main and explicitly deferred; not a regression introduced here.
Other factors
No CODEOWNERS entry covers these files. Bug hunt exited on dry_streak with no findings. No outstanding human CHANGES_REQUESTED in the timeline; the coderabbit thread on the test was resolved by a non-author. Tests follow harness conventions (tempDir, using, composed .toEqual, no ports/sleeps) and land in the existing module test file per CLAUDE.md.

They cover an empty File and an empty Blob with a filename argument, one File appended under two names, and a File over Bun.file() that is appended with no filename argument.
Problem
formData.append(name, file, "new.txt")andset(...)ignore thefilenameargument when the value is already aFile.fd.get(name).namereturns the File's original name. The same call with a plainBlobhonors it. Node, undici, and browsers honor it for both.Blob__setAsFile(src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:4070). It applies the entry filename only whenget_file_name().is_none(), so a value that already has a name keeps it. Multipart serialization reads the entry filename from the C++ side and was already correct.Fix
get_file_name().is_none()guard so a non-empty entry filename always sets the per-Blobname.filenameargument is given, the C++ caller defaults it fromBlob__getFileNameString, which returns this same per-Blob name, so the write is a no-op. The Blob written to is the FormData-held dupe, so the caller'sFileis not mutated and two entries that share oneFilekeep distinct names.test/js/web/html/FormData.test.ts(two new cases, the override case fails on main). Also ranform-data-set-append.test.js,FormData-multipart-serialization.test.ts, andtest/js/web/fetch/blob.test.ts.Background

It passes on current main and guards the no-op path described above. An earlier revision of this PR (before Never hand one StringImpl to two threads' atom tables (object URLs, BroadcastChannel, --compile workers) #40436 reworkedBlob__setAsFileon main) needed a second change inBlob__getFileNameStringfor that case; main already has it.append(name, file, "")(explicit empty filename) keeps the original name, as on main.
