Decision needed. Bun.CryptoHasher.hash(alg, data, {}) returns hex as in node, and a Buffer without a third argument. A "no" costs a second host function (Notes).

Problem

  • crypto.hash(alg, data, { outputEncoding, outputLength }) throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE: output must be of type string or ArrayBuffer or ArrayBufferView (expected string or buffer on 1.4.3).
  • node has this form since v24.4.0, and v27 requires it for one-shot SHAKE (crypto: move DEP0198 to End-of-Life nodejs/node#64000).
  • The schema at src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.bind.ts:56 takes only an encoding or a TypedArray.

Fix

  • Bun.CryptoHasher.hash gets its own union with a dictionary arm. The shared DigestOutput does not change.
  • hash_with_options is cold. It refuses what node v26.12.1 refuses (cSHAKE options included) before it reads the input. SHAKE output above 64 bytes is one fallible allocation.
  • Verified: test/js/node/crypto/crypto-oneshot.test.ts (11 tests fail on main), bun-cryptohasher.test.ts, a bun-types fixture. Self-reviewed: 32 concerns raised, 30 addressed, 2 are the decision above.

Background

  • A .bind.ts schema declares a native function's arguments. The generated C++ converts them in order and reads buffer bytes last.
  • SHAKE digests can have any length. createHash(alg, { outputLength }) already gives the same bytes.
  • Considered: the JS wrapper (refused in review), an arm in the shared DigestOutput (19 natives change), a second native for node:crypto.

Downsides

Notes

Repro (node v26.12.1 returns the values in the comments, main throws on the last three lines):

import crypto from "node:crypto";
crypto.hash("sha256", "abc", "base64"); // ungWv48Bz+pBQUDeXa4iI7ADYaOWF3qctBD/YfIAFa0=
crypto.hash("sha256", "abc", { outputEncoding: "base64" }); // the same string
crypto.hash("shake128", "abc", { outputLength: 8 }); // 5881092dd818bf5c
crypto.hash("shake128", "abc", { outputLength: 64 }).length; // 128

node's history of this argument. The options object came in v24.4.0 (nodejs/node#58121). A SHAKE digest without outputLength is deprecated: DEP0198, a runtime warning since v25.0.0 (nodejs/node#59008), and an error from v27 (nodejs/node#64000, merged 2026-06-21). functionName and customization came in v26.9.0 for cSHAKE (nodejs/node#65484). Bun reports v26.12.1. Like node 26, it keeps the 16 and 32 byte defaults. It prints no DEP0198.

Reach. No user reported this gap. The same bytes come today from crypto.createHash(alg, { outputLength }).update(data).digest(enc). The PR adds node's call form and node's errors for code that is written for node. @types/node already types the form, node 25 and later warn when a SHAKE call has no outputLength, and node 27 requires it.

The decision, with both prices.

  • Yes (this diff): one host function serves both entries. Bun.CryptoHasher.hash is then the one Bun API where {} and no argument give different types. { outputLength: 32 } alone also turns the Buffer into a hex string. bun.d.ts, docs/runtime/hashing.mdx and bun-cryptohasher.test.ts publish that default.
  • No: without outputEncoding, the options form of the Bun static returns a Buffer. crypto.hash needs node's hex default, and the wrapper must not decode the options, so node:crypto gets its own host function that shares hash_with_options. That is +1 host function, +1 thunk and +1 AOT table row. The schema, hash_with_options and crypto-oneshot.test.ts stay as they are.

Measurements. Release builds of main 8d5672c and of that commit plus the src/ changes of this PR, linux-x64.

  1. Existing forms, instructions per call, PR minus main: hex -23 / into-buffer -18 / no third argument -2. These are exact: one call of the host function, stepped by instruction in gdb after 3,004 calls (2,357 to 2,334, 1,659 to 1,641, 1,685 to 1,683). On main the host function calls the converter of DigestOutput (46 and 40 instructions). On the PR the converter of the new union is inlined. Whole process over 5e6 calls (perf_event_open instructions:u, medians of 5 interleaved runs, per call): Bun.CryptoHasher.hash hex -23.2 / into-buffer -18.0 / no third argument -1.7, crypto.hash hex -23.7, no third argument -22.9. Runs of one build differ by at most 6.2 per call. perf and valgrind are not installed in the container.
  2. Allocations per call (entries to mi_malloc in the traced call): existing forms +0 (1 / 0 / 0 on both builds). Options form with a digest of up to 64 bytes: 1, the result, as for the string form. 200 bytes as hex: 1 temporary more. 200 bytes as "buffer": the digest's one allocation, which the Buffer adopts. The first options call of a process: 7 against 1, because the four member names are atomized once. bpftrace and dhat are not installed.
  3. Release binary: .text +5,632 bytes (108,646,665 to 108,652,297), .rodata +0, .bun_builtins +11 (llvm-size -A). Stripped bun +8,192 bytes, which is two pages. Host functions +0, thunks +0 (1,857 Bun__Bindgen__ symbols on both), AOT table rows +0, member names +4 (413 to 417). bloaty is not installed.
  4. By symbol (llvm-nm -S): the C++ host function goes from 1,078 to 2,857 bytes and its Rust half from 3,625 to 4,099. New: hash_with_options 2,089, unknown_output_encoding 277, two squeeze 480, not_options 182, not_an_xof 89. Generated chooser of DigestOutput: 0 lines differ. The chooser of the new union has the same 7 lines, then two more tests (isCallable, JSArray), which only a value that is neither a string nor a buffer reaches.
  5. What the options form costs, warm, in instructions per call of the host function: {} 2,653 against 2,334 for "hex". { outputEncoding: "base64" } 2,514 against 2,000 for "base64". { outputLength: 32 } on sha256 3,232. shake128 { outputLength: 16 } 14,536 against 15,663 for "hex".
  6. Against createHash, whole process, instructions per call: shake256 of 64 bytes, crypto.hash(alg, s, { outputLength: 64 }) 14,476, crypto.createHash(alg, { outputLength: 64 }).update(s).digest("hex") 18,196. shake128 of 200 bytes: 21,274 against 24,483. So the gain is for SHAKE with a length. For sha256 in base64 the options form takes 2,656, the string form 2,118, and createHash 1,857.
  7. The step at 65 bytes, shake128, instructions per call: "buffer" +604 from 64 to 65 bytes, hex +137, latin1 +112.
  8. Refused options call, crypto.hash("sha256", buf, { outputLength: 8 }), first call of a process: 9,596 instructions with 1 MiB of input, 9,648 with 256 MiB. Max RSS for sha256 with outputLength: 2**32 - 1: +0 MiB (39 MiB with and without the call).
  9. Large SHAKE output. 256 MiB as "buffer": peak RSS 296 MiB, against 39 MiB for an empty script. outputLength 231 and 232-1 as "buffer": 2 ok (6.7 s and 12.8 s, peak 2,087 and 4,136 MiB). As hex, utf8, latin1: caught ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG after 0.03 s at 39 MiB. Under ulimit -v 1048576 the two buffers are caught too (ERR_MEMORY_ALLOCATION_FAILED). 0 aborts.
  10. AOT table: rows +0 (6,446). Keys changed in the Bun.CryptoHasher.hash row: 6, all of the third operand (accepted, converted, conversion, namedMembers, protocols, uses). The result of the row and 8 sibling rows are identical. The differential check of the row passes (TEST_PART=aot/builtins/differential). The fuzzer ran 517 programs of host-functions-that-throw with the new rows: 0 findings.
  11. Syscalls per call, existing forms: +0. gdb catch syscall stops 607 to 701 times for 20,000 and for 40,000 calls on both builds. strace is not installed.
  12. Wall-clock, crypto.hash("sha256", s, "hex"): main 209.5 ns, PR 198.3 ns (medians of 6 interleaved runs, each the best of 7 batches of 2e6 calls). One build alone spreads over 24 to 52 ns between runs, so this does not resolve a difference. mitata is not installed in bench/.
  13. Debug build with ASAN, under the environment of CI's ASAN lane (BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1, LeakSanitizer on): 159 tests of the two test files, 0 failures, 0 unchecked exception reports, 0 leak reports.

Differences from node v26.12.1 that remain. Item 4 is the only one on a valid, documented call. The others are on error paths, or need a getter, a Proxy, a digest of 2 GiB, or an argument that node does not document.

  1. An unknown algorithm throws TypeError ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE Unsupported algorithm "x". node throws Error Digest method x is not supported. The string form does the same today.
  2. An unknown outputEncoding together with an outputLength that is no uint32: Bun reports the length, node the encoding. A dictionary converts each member when it reads it. The test pins this with a comment.
  3. A functionName or customization that node does not accept (null, a number, an object, a buffer with a NUL byte): Bun throws Digest options are not supported, as for a valid value. node throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE or ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE, and before every other error of the options.
  4. outputEncoding: "utf-16le" throws and "utf16-le" is accepted, the reverse of node. The cause is the key utf16-le in the shared ENCODING_MAP (src/runtime/node/types.rs:592). node: accept the utf-16le encoding alias and reject utf16-le #43373 fixes the key, and this PR needs no change when it lands.
  5. outputLength from 231 on an algorithm that is no XOF: Bun prints the number in the message. node holds the length in an int and prints a negative number (-1 for 232 - 1).
  6. SHAKE with outputLength from 2**31: node throws ERR_OSSL_CRYPTO_MALLOC_FAILURE, for the same int. Bun returns the digest as a Buffer, or as a string for ucs2 and utf16le, and throws ERR_STRING_TOO_LONG for the other string encodings.
  7. How an unknown encoding name is printed. Bun uses the formatter that its C++ uses for ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE, as fs.openSync(path, flags) does on main. It prints a long name whole (node cuts what it prints at 128 characters), quotes with ' or " only (node takes a backtick when the name has both), writes control characters in lower-case hex, and prints a lone surrogate as U+FFFD.
  8. How a function as third argument is named. Bun runs no script for it: it takes the own data property name, else displayName, else the declared name, as Buffer.alloc(fn) does on main. So a bound function is function foo (node: function bound foo), and a callable Proxy is function (node names the target).
  9. The members are read in the order outputEncoding, outputLength, functionName, customization. node reads outputLength first. Only a getter or a Proxy sees the order. A dictionary validates a member when it reads it, so this order is what reports a wrong type of outputEncoding before a wrong outputLength, as node does. Members are not read through Object.prototype.
  10. A TypedArray, ArrayBuffer or String object as third argument keeps the meaning it has on main (write into it, or the encoding). node reads it as an options object and returns hex.
  11. A Proxy of an array is refused with the message HashOptions must be an object, which is how a schema dictionary reports it. An instance of a subclass of Array is reported as an instance of Array.
  12. The string form crypto.hash(alg, data, "") throws Unknown encoding, as on main. node reads "" as "utf8". The options form { outputEncoding: "" } matches node.

Also changed. crypto.hash.length is 3, as in node. It was 2. For a third argument that is no string, buffer or object (null, a number), Bun.CryptoHasher.hash now throws node's sentence The "options" argument must be of type object. Received null. The code ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE and the class are the same as on main.

Not changed. Bun.CryptoHasher#digest, the eight static hashers and Bun.sha refuse an options object as before (bun-cryptohasher.test.ts pins it). crypto.createHash(alg, { outputLength }) already matches node. createHash ignores functionName and customization on main, where node v26.12.1 throws. That is a separate change.

Types. The three options overloads stand before the encoding overload, so Parameters<>, ReturnType<> and bind of Bun.CryptoHasher.hash read the same overload as on main (test/integration/bun-types/fixture/hashing.ts pins it). A misspelled options object then gets the error text of the encoding overload. CryptoHasherHashOptions uses DigestEncoding, as the encoding overload does. That type lacks "binary", "utf-8" and "ucs-2", which the runtime takes in both forms.

Overlap with open PRs.

Self-review. 32 concerns in two passes. In the code: cSHAKE options are refused and not ignored, the string-length check counts utf8 and reads the adjustable limit, an unknown encoding name and a function are described by Bun's shared formatters, "" means utf8, and comments are one line each. In types and docs: the overload order, a fixture, and a docs sentence that claimed the same third argument as .digest(). In the tests: the Buffer class, the write-into arm, each arm of the length check, node v26.12.1 as baseline, links to node's source. In this description: reach, the createHash route, nodejs/node#64000, the overlaps. Open: the two concerns about the default for {} on the Bun static.

History. The first version of this PR parsed the options in the JS wrapper. The review asked for CryptoHasher.hash. The second version did that in the hand-written argument decoder, which #45687 and #46540 replaced with a schema, so this is a new implementation. The stale sweep closed the PR on 2026-10-28 with the review still open.

Ran. crypto-oneshot.test.ts (48 pass, on a release build of main 11 fail), bun-cryptohasher.test.ts (111 pass, on main 1 fails), node-crypto.test.js, test/js/node/crypto/crypto.test.ts, test/js/node/test/parallel/test-crypto-oneshot-hash.js, test-crypto-oneshot-hash-xof.js with its BoringSSL skip removed (passes, and fails on main), test/integration/bun-types/bun-types.test.ts, test/internal/bindgen.test.ts, bindgen-declared-results.test.ts, test/internal/builtins-table/, test/internal/source-lints/, test/aot/fuzzer-fixed-seeds.test.ts, fuzzer-fixed-seeds-in-several-files.test.ts, generated-host-functions-that-throw.test.ts with AOT_GENERATED=all (150 pass, the 10 listed seeds stay todo), and operands, wrong-columns, table-regressions and proven-returns under test/aot/builtins/.

The options API has narrow compatibility gaps involving interacting getters and invalid arguments. These warrant owner awareness and follow-up, but the established issues do not indicate broad hashing failures or release-blocking risk.

Beyond the inline nit, I also checked that h.update(h, input) matches the native _Hash#update(wrapper, data, encoding) signature (arg 0 is the chaining return value, arg 1 is data — see JSHash.cpp:175), and that swapping {}→[] in the invalid-arg test is correct since validateObject rejects arrays.

Extended reasoning...

The unusual-looking h.update(h, input) call is correct: the native handle's update reads thisValue for the JSHash instance and argument(0) only as the value to return for chaining, with data at argument(1). Passing the handle itself as the wrapper is harmless here since the return value is discarded. String inputs on this branch default to UTF-8, matching the CryptoHasher.hash fallthrough. The test-array change ({}→[]) is required because {} is now a valid options object; validateObject rejects arrays by default so [] still exercises ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE.

LGTM — the earlier feedback (encoding normalization before branching, dead toLowerCase fallback) is addressed and the final shape is clean.

What was reviewed:

  • Options parsing routes string/object/undefined correctly; validateObject rejects arrays/null so the updated invalid-arg test list is accurate.
  • normalizeEncoding handles "buffer" case-insensitively (verified against ENCODING_MAP at src/runtime/node/types.rs:670), so the dropped fallback is indeed dead.
  • h.update(h, input) matches the native jsHashProtoFuncUpdate signature (wrapper, data, encoding) — string input defaults to UTF-8, same as the createHash().update() baseline the tests compare against.
  • Error paths: invalid outputEncoding throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE on both branches; outputLength validated via validateUint32.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

Adds Node.js 24.4+ options-object support to crypto.hash(algorithm, data, options) in src/js/node/crypto.ts (~30 lines), plus ~60 lines of tests in test/js/node/crypto/crypto-oneshot.test.ts. The implementation parses { outputEncoding, outputLength }, normalizes the encoding once via the existing normalizeEncoding binding, and when outputLength is set routes through the existing native _Hash handle (same one createHash uses); otherwise falls through to the pre-existing CryptoHasher.hash fast path.

Security risks

None introduced. This is argument-parsing glue in the JS builtin layer that dispatches to existing, already-shipping native primitives (_Hash, CryptoHasher.hash). No new crypto logic, no key material handling. The tamper-resistance concern (prototype-overridable toLowerCase) raised mid-review was mooted when that branch was removed as dead code in b69dc5b.

Level of scrutiny

Low-to-moderate. It's node:crypto, but the change is a thin compat shim over paths already exercised by createHash. The PR went through three review rounds (two of mine, one coderabbit) and every point was addressed with a follow-up commit and test. I re-traced the final diff against jsHashProtoFuncUpdate in JSHash.cpp to confirm h.update(h, input) passes (wrapper, data, encoding=undefined→utf8) exactly as Hash.prototype.update does, and against ENCODING_MAP to confirm normalizeEncoding returns "buffer" for any case-variant so the removed fallback is provably dead.

Other factors

Test coverage is thorough: options-object with each encoding (hex/base64/buffer including case variants), XOF outputLength at 0/8/16/64, non-XOF with matching length, and every error path (ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE for bad options/outputEncoding type, ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE for unrecognized encoding on both branches, ERR_OUT_OF_RANGE for bad outputLength). The existing per-algorithm loop and test-crypto-oneshot-hash.js parallel test still pass per the PR evidence. The {} → [] swap in the invalid-third-arg test is the correct update now that {} is valid input.

Reproduced on main e64b59d and on canary 1.4.3: crypto.hash("shake128", "abc", { outputLength: 8 }) throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. node v26.12.1 returns 5881092dd818bf5c. On a build of main, 11 tests of test/js/node/crypto/crypto-oneshot.test.ts and 1 test of test/js/bun/util/bun-cryptohasher.test.ts fail. With this PR both files pass.

PR: #34926, rebased on main at 4715f7a, with the implementation in the schema of Bun.CryptoHasher.hash, as the review asked. Every CI failure on that commit is a retry-passed test in a file this PR does not touch. The description starts with the one question that needs a maintainer: the default for {} on Bun.CryptoHasher.hash.

Moved to CryptoHasher::hash in 7d825d7. The JS wrapper is back to a one-line pass-through; the third argument is now parsed in Rust.

Summary of the native change:

  • CryptoHasher::hash accepts a string encoding, a TypedArray output buffer (existing Bun API), or an options object { outputEncoding, outputLength }. The object form defaults outputEncoding to hex to match Node.
  • ZigHashAlgo gains IS_XOF; the one-shot XOF path now sizes the squeeze from outputLength (heap-allocating above EVP_MAX_MD_SIZE). Non-XOF algorithms reject a mismatched outputLength with the same message Node uses.
  • validators::validate_object now rejects callables in the default-options fast path so () => {} is refused like it is in Node; the ALLOW_FUNCTION flag already implied that was the intent.

Tests: crypto-oneshot.test.ts (37), node-crypto.test.js (202), bun-cryptohasher.test.ts (397), Node parallel test-crypto-oneshot-hash.js, and the node:path suite (touches validate_object) all pass locally.

Beyond the two inline nits, I re-checked the argument-decode ordering after 4a20194: the deferred-output-buffer shape (js_type() check → option .get()s → input decode/ToPrimitive → output-buffer wrap → hash_) now has no user-JS re-entry between either pointer capture and its use, in both directions. The validate_object slow-path callable check also now matches the fast path. Leaving for a human given the amount of memory-safety-sensitive native code churned across the review iterations.

Extended reasoning...

The two remaining findings are error-message-level Node-compat nits (validator arg-name prefix, outputEncoding: null handling). The substantive concern across three prior review rounds was raw-pointer capture ordering vs. user-JS re-entry in CryptoHasher::hash; 4a20194's deferred-wrap approach resolves both the option-getter→input and the ToPrimitive→output hazards, and both now have regression tests. Not approving because ~180 lines of native crypto argument parsing plus a shared validate_object change is more than a mechanical fix and has already needed two safety corrections — worth a human pass.

No issues found on this pass — all four earlier review threads (input-buffer UAF, output-buffer UAF, stale doc comment, callable-Proxy is_callable() in validate_object) are addressed at 184bfea, and the two Node-compat pushbacks (bare validator names, outputEncoding: null) were verified against Node v26.3.0. Deferring to a human for final sign-off given this is ~200 lines of native crypto code with raw-pointer capture ordered around user-JS re-entry.

What was reviewed:

  • Argument decode ordering in CryptoHasher::hash: option .get()s → input decode → deferred output-TypedArray wrap; neither raw pointer is live across a user-JS re-entry point, and both regression tests exercise the hostile paths.
  • validate_object fast/slow-path callable rejection and its effect on the 5 pre-existing callers (node_crypto_binding, path, parse_args) — all pass Default::default(), so the tightened check is a Node-compat fix, not a behaviour break.
  • XOF length handling: resolve_output_length, the len == 0 early returns, and the > EVP_MAX_MD_SIZE heap-allocation branch for both string and buffer outputs.
  • The test change swapping {} → [] in the invalid-third-arg list (correct: {} is now a valid options object; arrays are rejected by validate_object).
Extended reasoning...

Overview

Adds Node 24.4+ crypto.hash(algorithm, data, options) options-object support (outputEncoding, outputLength) to Bun's one-shot hash API. Touches four files: CryptoHasher.rs (~200 lines — argument parsing rework, XOF output-length plumbing through hash_/hash_by_name*, new IS_XOF trait const, heap-buffer path for XOF outputs > 64 bytes), validators.rs (6 lines — validate_object now rejects callables to match Node's validateObject), types.rs (12 lines — new encode_with_size thin wrapper), and crypto-oneshot.test.ts (+104 lines of tests).

Security risks

This is node:crypto, but the change is output-shape plumbing (encoding + length), not the hash primitives themselves. The real risk was memory safety: two use-after-free hazards around raw-pointer capture vs. user-JS re-entry (option getters resizing the input buffer; input [Symbol.toPrimitive] resizing the output buffer) were found in earlier review rounds and are fixed with the deferred-output-wrap ordering plus dedicated regression tests. outputLength is validated via validate_uint32 (rejects NaN/±Inf/negatives/> u32::MAX) before any allocation, so the vec[0u8; len] heap path is bounded to 4 GiB by user request — same as createHash({ outputLength }) already allows. No new untrusted-input parsing.

Level of scrutiny

High. Native Rust with from_raw_parts_mut writes into JSC-owned backing stores, and the argument-decode order is load-bearing for soundness (two UAFs surfaced when it was reordered during review). The validate_object change is a shared helper affecting 5 other call sites. This has now been through five iterations with each finding either fixed or empirically refuted against Node, and the bug-hunting system found nothing on the current head — but per the approval guidelines for crypto/memory-safety code, a maintainer should give the final look.

Other factors

Comprehensive test coverage (37 tests: options-object encoding, XOF at 0/8/16/64/256 bytes, non-XOF outputLength accept/reject, validation errors, both UAF regressions). CI on the pre-final build was green modulo known flakes. All PR-thread comments are resolved; the last commit is the one-line is_callable() fix I requested. The two nits I raised on 07-22 (validator name prefix, outputEncoding: null) were correctly refuted with Node v26.3.0 output, so those stay as-is.

Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

Additional findings (outside the current diff — GitHub can't attach inline comments there):

  • 🔴 src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:255 — Callers passing a non-string algorithm plus an options object with a getter can make Bun read freed string memory instead of getting a clean error. CryptoHasher.rs:255 captures the algorithm as a borrowed ZigString view into a temporary JSString that nothing roots. The option getters at CryptoHasher.rs:280 and CryptoHasher.rs:288 then run user JS, which can GC that JSString, so EVP::by_name later reads freed memory. Fix: reject non-string algorithms up front with ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE as Node's validateString does, or copy the name into owned memory before any user JS can run. The base only had this window via String-object inputs. [also at: src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:288 - Users passing a non-string algorithm object with a custom toString can hit a use-after-free read when an option getter triggers GC.]

    Why this was flagged

Trigger: crypto.hash({ toString: () => "sha" + "256".slice(0) }, "abc", { get outputLength() { Bun.gc(true); return undefined; } }) entering CryptoHasher::hash at src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:244 (also via Bun.CryptoHasher.hash). CryptoHasher.rs:255 calls get_zig_string, which is JSC__JSValue__toZigString at src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:3462: toStringOrNull on an object invokes toString and yields a fresh JSString held only in a C++ local; the ZigString stores str->span8().data() (bindings.cpp:3483) and length, nothing roots the JSString. The new options block at CryptoHasher.rs:274-296 then runs validate_object and arg.get for "outputLength" and "outputEncoding", which invoke user getters or Proxy traps. A GC inside them can collect the temporary JSString and free its StringImpl.

Verification: normal — triggered when crypto.hash / Bun.CryptoHasher.hash is called with a non-string (object) algorithm whose toString returns a freshly built JSString and an options object whose outputLength/outputEncoding getter triggers GC (or otherwise allocates enough to collect).

  • 🟡 src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:479 — Users passing a wrong outputLength to a fixed-length hash get a plain Error with no .code, so Node-style err.code checks never match. Both new throw sites build the message with global.throw(...) (src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:476 and :977), which creates a bare Error, while Node raises this as ERR_CRYPTO_INVALID_DIGEST (a TypeError with that code). Fix: route both sites through the ErrorCode machinery, e.g. global.err(ErrorCode::CRYPTO_INVALID_DIGEST, format_args!(...)).throw() as PBKDF2.rs:178 does, keeping the "Output length N is invalid for X, which does not support XOF" text, and have the tests assert the code rather than only /does not support XOF/.

    Why this was flagged

Trigger: crypto.hash('sha256', 'abc', { outputLength: 16 }) (BoringSSL path) or crypto.hash('sha3-256', 'abc', { outputLength: 16 }) (Zig path), both reachable from node:crypto hash. The new guards at src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:474-479 and :975-980 call global.throw(format_args!(...)), which per src/jsc/JSGlobalObject.rs:837 builds a plain Error with no code property and class Error. Node throws this through THROW_ERR_CRYPTO_INVALID_DIGEST, a TypeError with code === 'ERR_CRYPTO_INVALID_DIGEST'; code written against Node that branches on err.code or instanceof TypeError sees an unmatched error on Bun. On the base branch the options object was rejected outright, so this is a new user-facing error shape. The repo already exposes ErrorCode::CRYPTO_INVALID_DIGEST (used at src/runtime/crypto/PBKDF2.rs:178) and REVIEW.md requires user-facing JS errors to go through the centralized ErrorCode machinery; the tests at test/js/node/crypto/crypto-oneshot.test.ts:88-89 only match the message regex, so the missing code is not caught.

Verification: Trigger: { outputLength: N } with N != digest size. Both new throw sites (src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:476-479 and :977-981) use the plain-Error helper: a bare Error with no code property. Node callers checking err.code === 'ERR_CRYPTO_INVALID_DIGEST' will not match on Bun. The test only asserts toThrow(/does not support XOF/), so the missing code goes undetected.

  • 🟡 src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:998 — Code ported from Node that passes { outputEncoding: '' } to crypto.hash gets a thrown ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE where Node returns the digest as a utf8 string. The options arm at src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:289-291 accepts the empty string from validate_string and hands it to Encoding::from at src/runtime/node/types.rs:694, which has no entry for the empty slice, so src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:998 (and :490 on the BoringSSL arm) throws 'Unknown encoding: '. Node's normalizeEncoding maps '' to 'utf8'. Fix: map an empty outputEncoding to Utf8 before the lookup, at both the options arm and the legacy string arm, mirroring Encoding::from_js_with_default at src/runtime/node/types.rs:740. [also at: src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:490 - Node code passing { outputEncoding: '' } to crypto.hash gets ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE "Unknown encoding" on Bun where Node returns a utf8 string, so the new options form diverges on an input Node accepts.]

    Why this was flagged

Trigger: crypto.hash('sha256', 'abc', { outputEncoding: '' }), via node:crypto hash() which forwards the object to CryptoHasher.hash. src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:290 validate_string passes (it is a string); :291 wraps it as StringOrBuffer; hash_ at src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:490 or hash_by_name_inner at :998 calls Encoding::from(b"") which returns None (ENCODING_MAP at src/runtime/node/types.rs:694 has no empty key) and throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE 'Unknown encoding: '. Node's lib/internal/util.js normalizeEncoding('') returns 'utf8' and hash() returns a utf8-decoded string. The legacy string form crypto.hash(alg, data, '') already throws on base, but the options form is a new entry point added by this PR and advertised as Node's 24.4+ signature, so the divergence now has a second, newly shipped route. Population: Node code that computes encoding dynamically and ends up with ''. Remedy: treat empty encoding as utf8 before Encoding::from at both arms.

Verification: Triggered when a caller passes { outputEncoding: '' } to crypto.hash / Bun.CryptoHasher.hash. src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:289-291 validate_string accepts the empty string. src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:490 and :998 call Encoding::from, and ENCODING_MAP (src/runtime/node/types.rs:629-643) has no empty key, so the call throws ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE: Unknown encoding. Node's normalizeEncoding maps '' to 'utf8'.

  • 🟡 src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:861 — nit: Maintainers now have two independent definitions of which algorithms are XOF, and they can drift apart. The new IS_XOF const at src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:861 (set in the shake macro arm at line 912) duplicates the runtime match in extern_is_xof at lines 202-206, which still hardcodes Shake128 | Shake256. Fix: derive one from the other so a new XOF algorithm cannot be added to one site and missed by the other, for example have extern_is_xof dispatch through the per-algo IS_XOF const via for_each_zig_algo, or drop the const and gate resolve_output_length on the same algorithm match.

    Why this was flagged

The diff adds const IS_XOF: bool = false; to the ZigHashAlgo trait at src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:861 and overrides it to true only in impl_xof at line 912. The pre-existing extern_is_xof at lines 200-209 answers the same question with a hand-written matches!(..., evp::Algorithm::Shake128 | evp::Algorithm::Shake256). Nothing ties the two together, so adding or reclassifying an algorithm in one place leaves the other stale: crypto.hash(algo, data, { outputLength }) and the streaming createHash(algo, { outputLength }) XOF check would then disagree on whether a variable-length digest is allowed. On the base branch there was only one definition. No user-visible failure today since both lists currently agree; this is a consistency nit per the one-source-of-truth rule.

Verification: nit — triggers only when a future XOF algorithm is added in one site but not the other; nothing is wrong today. The diff adds const IS_XOF: bool = false; to ZigHashAlgo at src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:861, set true only inside the impl_xof! arm at line 912. The untouched extern_is_xof at lines 200-209 hardcodes Shake128 | Shake256; nothing links the two.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

Format the rejected length as a signed int to match Node's message.

Node stores outputLength in an int and prints it with std::to_string. For outputLength: 4294967295 with md5, Node throws Output length -1 is invalid for md5, which does not support XOF. not_an_xof formats the u32 unsigned, so Bun throws Output length 4294967295 .... Cast to i32 before formatting. The row for md5 at test/js/node/crypto/crypto-oneshot.test.ts:153 must then expect -1.

🐛 Suggested fix
 fn not_an_xof<'a>(heap: &JsHeap<'a>, algorithm: &[u8], wanted: u32) -> bindgen::Error<'a> {

 }

Based on learnings: the wanted as i32 cast matches the C++ int conversion that Node performs. Do not treat the cast as a truncation bug.

Minor · Decode the crypto.hash options argument in the Node wrapper instead of… · crypto.ts:232

src/js/node/crypto.ts:232
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚖️ Poor tradeoff

Decode the crypto.hash options argument in the Node wrapper instead of forwarding buffer arguments to the Bun output path.

src/js/node/crypto.ts:231-233 passes the third argument of crypto.hash to CryptoHasher.hash without change. In src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.bind.ts:31-39, into is matched before options. A TypedArray, DataView, or ArrayBuffer in that position therefore takes the output-buffer branch. The digest is written into the caller's buffer, and the buffer is returned. Node reads that argument as an options object. A plain buffer has no recognized options fields, so Node returns the hex digest and leaves the buffer unchanged.

Change the Node wrapper to decode the third argument with Node's options rules:

  • Keep the string form as the encoding.
  • For an object, read each member that Node's options branch reads, in Node's order. Node reads outputLength before outputEncoding.
  • Keep Node's validation and its error precedence for each member.
  • Do not copy a fixed set of members into a new object. That changes the observable reads and omits other recognized members.
  • A buffer that carries outputEncoding or outputLength properties must produce the same result as Node.
  • Pass the decoded options to the native path in a form that does not match the into variant.

Keep the Bun.CryptoHasher.hash destination API unchanged. Its output-buffer behavior is a Bun contract and is outside this change.

Correct both test sites:

  • test/js/node/crypto/crypto-oneshot.test.ts:272-277: crypto.hash is bound at line 58. For a TypedArray third argument, the first assertion should expect the hex digest. The buffer should keep every byte at 0xa5.
  • test/js/bun/util/bun-cryptohasher.test.ts:259: nodeHash is crypto.hash, imported at line 3. Remove it from the loop so the loop covers only Bun.CryptoHasher.hash. Add a separate assertion that nodeHash returns the hex digest and leaves the buffer unchanged. Also correct the title at line 244. It says the argument is not read as options, which is false for nodeHash.

This defect already exists at the merge base. The PR adds the options path and the test that pins the current result. A follow-up fix is acceptable.

Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base e64b59d92631); the change keeps it reachable.

TypedArray is treated as options, returns the hex digest, and remains unchanged;
keep Bun.CryptoHasher.hash in the output-buffer test loop and correct the test
title to distinguish the APIs.

Review comments at @src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.bind.ts:
- Line 22: Update the outputLength validation in the CryptoHasher options
conversion so outputEncoding is validated first, then apply the outputLength
range check; update the crypto-oneshot test for this input to expect
ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE.
- Around line 19-22: Update the HashOptions decoder to read and retain
outputLength before reading outputEncoding, while preserving outputEncoding’s
precedence when reporting wrong-type errors; separate member read order from
validation or error ordering rather than simply reordering the declarations.
- Around line 24-25: Update the `functionName` and `customization` argument
validation to reject non-buffer values with `ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE` before the
cSHAKE refusal path; update the corresponding assertion in
`crypto-oneshot.test.ts` to expect that error code.

Minor comments:
Review comments at @src/js/node/crypto.ts:
- Line 232: Update the Node crypto.hash wrapper to decode its third argument
using Node’s options semantics, reading outputLength before outputEncoding and
preserving validation and property-read behavior; pass decoded options in a form
that cannot match CryptoHasher.hash’s into variant, without changing
Bun.CryptoHasher.hash’s destination API. Update the crypto.hash tests so a
TypedArray is treated as options, returns the hex digest, and remains unchanged;
keep Bun.CryptoHasher.hash in the output-buffer test loop and correct the test
title to distinguish the APIs.

Review comments at @src/runtime/crypto/CryptoHasher.rs:
- Around line 98-102: Update not_an_xof to format wanted as a signed 32-bit
integer, matching Node’s outputLength message for values above i32::MAX. Keep
the existing error text and algorithm formatting unchanged.

Rebased on main at 4715f7a. The only change is EVP::by_name in place of EVP::by_name_and_engine, which #47291 removed. The four inline threads are answered in place. On the findings that are not in a thread:

  • Use-after-free with a non-string algorithm: the lines it names are from an earlier version of this PR. The current Bun.CryptoHasher.hash is a schema host function. The generated code converts algorithm with IDLStrictString first, which refuses a non-string and holds a WTF::String, then reads the option members, and reads the input bytes last.
  • ERR_CRYPTO_INVALID_DIGEST for a wrong outputLength: node's crypto.hash builds this error with ThrowCryptoError and no OpenSSL error raised, so it is a plain Error with no code. ERR_CRYPTO_INVALID_DIGEST is what subtle.digest throws. The test pins name: "Error", code: undefined against node v26.12.1.
  • outputEncoding: "": the options arm already maps it to utf8. The string form crypto.hash(alg, data, "") throws on main as before (difference 12 in the description).
  • IS_XOF const: the current diff has no such const. xof_by_name is the one place that names shake128 and shake256.
  • Printing outputLength as a signed int: node's -1 for 2**32 - 1 is what a C int does to the value. Bun prints the number the caller passed (difference 5).
  • Decoding the options in the JS wrapper: the first version of this PR did that, and the review asked for the native. A TypedArray as third argument keeps its meaning on main (difference 10).
