What does this PR do?

  • Modify the initialization logic for StandaloneModuleGraph to reuse an existing graph if already set, enhancing efficiency.
  • Update CLI to set the graph early for configuration checks before loading.
  • Add checks in loadConfig to respect compile-time flags for disabling bunfig autoloading.
  • Introduce regression tests to ensure that autoloadBunfig is correctly disabled when execArgv is set.

This change aims to streamline the execution flow and prevent unnecessary loading of configurations in standalone executables if provided execArgs

Walkthrough

Conditionally reuse or create the StandaloneModuleGraph during boot, set a global graph early in CLI initialization, and add an early return in config loading to skip bunfig autoload when the standalone flag disables it. Includes regression tests for autoload behavior with execArgv.

Changes

Cohort / File(s) Change Summary
Boot and CLI initialization
src/bun.js.zig, src/cli.zig
bootStandalone now reuses an existing StandaloneModuleGraph.get() if present; cli.zig allocates and sets a global StandaloneModuleGraph early before Command.init runs.
Configuration loading
src/cli/Arguments.zig
loadConfig returns early for standalone builds when graph.flags.disable_autoload_bunfig is true, bypassing bunfig autoload logic.
Test coverage
test/bundler/bundler_compile_autoload.test.ts
Added regression tests (AutoloadBunfigDisabledWithExecArgv, AutoloadBunfigDisabledWithExecArgvCLI) to verify autoloadBunfig: false prevents bunfig preload when using execArgv.

Learning: In src/analytics.zig and similar files using bun.EnvVar boolean environment variables: the new EnvVar API for boolean flags (e.g., bun.EnvVar.do_not_track.get(), bun.EnvVar.ci.get()) is designed to parse and return boolean values from environment variables, not just check for their presence. Learning: In src/bun.js/telemetry.zig, the guard preventing double configuration (lines 213-216) is intentional. The telemetry API uses a single-shot configuration model where configure() is called once during application startup. Users must call Bun.telemetry.configure(null) to reset before reconfiguring. This design ensures: (1) predictable state—callbacks don't change mid-request, avoiding race conditions; (2) zero overhead when disabled—no checking for callback changes on every request; (3) clear ownership—one adapter (e.g., bun-otel) owns the telemetry config. Merge-style reconfiguration would require atomic updates during active requests, adding overhead to the hot path.

Learning: In Bun's Zig codebase, when storing JSValue objects in collections like ArrayList, use `jsc.Strong.Optional` (not raw JSValue). When adding values, wrap them with `jsc.Strong.Optional.create(value, globalThis)`. In cleanup code, iterate the collection calling `.deinit()` on each Strong.Optional item before calling `.deinit()` on the ArrayList itself. This pattern automatically handles GC protection. See examples in src/bun.js/test/ScopeFunctions.zig and src/bun.js/node/node_cluster_binding.zig.

Learning: In Bun's shell interpreter (src/shell/interpreter.zig), the JavaScript garbage collector's memory reporting API only allows reporting extra memory allocation once at object creation time. Therefore, `estimated_size_for_gc` is intentionally set once during initialization and not updated afterward, even though fields like `root_io`, `vm_args_utf8`, and `export_env` may be mutated later. The `estimatedSize()` method returns this cached initial value, while `memoryCost()` computes the size on-demand.

Learning: In Bun's Zig codebase (src/bun.js/bindings/JSValue.zig), the JSValue enum uses `.null` (not `.js_null`) for JavaScript's null value. Only `js_undefined` has the `js_` prefix to avoid collision with Zig's built-in `undefined` keyword. The correct enum fields are: `js_undefined`, `null`, `true`, `false`, and `zero`.

21-28: LGTM: Efficient graph reuse pattern.

The conditional initialization correctly reuses an existing graph (set early in cli.zig when execArgv is present) or creates a new one. The orelse labeled-block pattern is idiomatic Zig, and ownership is appropriately transferred to the VirtualMachine.

Never use hardcoded port numbers in tests. Always use port: 0 to get a random port
Prefer concurrent tests over sequential tests using test.concurrent or describe.concurrent when multiple tests spawn processes or write files, unless it's very difficult to make them concurrent
When spawning Bun processes in tests, use bunExe and bunEnv from harness to ensure the same build of Bun is used and debug logging is silenced
Use -e flag for single-file tests when spawning Bun processes
Use tempDir() from harness to create temporary directories with files for multi-file tests instead of creating files manually
Prefer async/await over callbacks in tests
When callbacks must be used and it's just a single callback, use Promise.withResolvers to create a promise that can be resolved or rejected from a callback
Do not set a timeout on tests. Bun already has timeouts
Use Buffer.alloc(count, fill).toString() instead of 'A'.repeat(count) to create repetitive strings in tests, as ''.repeat is very slow in debug JavaScriptCore builds
Use describe blocks for grouping related tests
Always use await using or using to ensure proper resource cleanup in tests for APIs like Bun.listen, Bun.connect, Bun.spawn, Bun.serve, etc
Always check exit codes and test error scenarios in error tests

Tests for CLI-only features use backend: "cli" flag (e.g., test/bundler/bundler_compile_splitting.test.ts). The CompileBuildConfig interface correctly restricts these with splitting?: never;. When documenting CLI-only bundler features, add a note clarifying they're not available via the programmatic API.

Learning: In Bun's Zig codebase, when handling error unions where the same cleanup operation (like `rawFree`) needs to be performed regardless of success or failure, prefer using boolean folding with `else |err| switch (err)` over duplicating the cleanup call in multiple switch branches.

Learning: In the Bun repository, standalone packages under packages/ (e.g., bun-vscode, bun-inspector-protocol, bun-plugin-yaml, bun-plugin-svelte, bun-debug-adapter-protocol, bun-otel) co-locate their tests with package source code using *.test.ts files. This follows standard npm/monorepo patterns. The test/ directory hierarchy (test/js/bun/, test/cli/, test/js/node/) is reserved for testing Bun's core runtime APIs and built-in functionality, not standalone packages.

src/bun.js.zig (1)

21-28: LGTM! Conditional graph initialization enables early flag checks.

The pattern correctly reuses an existing graph if set earlier (when execArgv is present) or creates and sets a new one. This allows compile flags like disable_autoload_bunfig to be checked during config loading.

src/cli.zig (1)

686-690: LGTM! Early global assignment enables flag checks during config loading.

Setting the graph globally before Command.init (line 703) allows loadConfig to check compile-time flags like disable_autoload_bunfig before configuration is loaded. This correctly implements the intended behavior for standalone executables with execArgv.

src/cli/Arguments.zig (1)

298-303: LGTM! Early return correctly honors compile-time flag.

The placement at the start of loadConfig ensures that bunfig autoloading is skipped when disable_autoload_bunfig is set in the standalone module graph. This aligns with the PR objective to honor compile-time flags.

Based on learnings: honors compile-time configuration flags for standalone executables.

test/bundler/bundler_compile_autoload.test.ts (1)

216-267: LGTM! Regression tests provide good coverage.

These tests correctly verify the fix for the reported issue: autoloadBunfig: false is now honored even when execArgv is set. The tests follow established patterns and cover both default and CLI backends.

The test expectation that stdout is "ENTRY" (not "PRELOAD\nENTRY") confirms that bunfig preload does not execute when the flag is disabled.

As per coding guidelines: tests use the established itBundled helper and verify behavior with both backend configurations.

src/bun.js.zig (1)

35-35: Critical: Check flags from the actual graph in use, not the parameter.

Line 35 references graph.flags.disable_autoload_bunfig, but when an existing graph is reused (lines 21-28), graph_ptr points to a different graph than the parameter graph. This defeats the PR's goal of honoring the early-set graph's flags.

🔎 Proposed fix
-        if (!ctx.debug.loaded_bunfig and !graph.flags.disable_autoload_bunfig) {
+        if (!ctx.debug.loaded_bunfig and !graph_ptr.flags.disable_autoload_bunfig) {

Learning: In src/shell/ParsedShellScript.zig, the JavaScript garbage collector's memory reporting API only allows reporting extra memory allocation once at object creation time. Therefore, `estimated_size_for_gc` is intentionally set once during initialization (via `#computeEstimatedSizeForGC()`) and not updated afterward, even though fields like `args`, `export_env`, and `cwd` may be mutated by methods like `setCwd()`, `setEnv()`, and `take()`.

Learning: The `#allocator` syntax in bun's custom Zig implementation is valid and does not require quoting with @"#allocator". Private fields using the `#` prefix work correctly throughout the codebase without special quoting syntax.

Learning: In Zig code (e.g., src/bun.js/node/node_fs_stat_watcher.zig), taking the address of a function return value (e.g., &this.getLastStat()) is valid when passed as a const pointer parameter (e.g., *const bun.sys.PosixStat) to another function in the same expression. The compiler materializes the temporary with appropriate lifetime for the call scope.
