more accurately, developers cannot pass a value when expect values resolve to never. this is easy to fall into when using the toContainKey* matchers. falling back to PropertyKey when this happens is a sensible/reasonable default

Walkthrough

Adds an internal conditional type __internal.IfNeverThenElse and applies it to bun:test key-based matcher signatures; updates related matcher tests and diagnostics, switches several ambient imports to Node-prefixed specifiers, adjusts TextEncoder/Performance typings, adds a console async iterator declaration, and pins/bumps @types/node in multiple package manifests.

Changes

Cohort / File(s) Change Summary
Matcher type updates
packages/bun-types/test.d.ts
Added __internal.IfNeverThenElse<T, Else> = [T] extends [never] ? Else : T and replaced keyof / NoInfer<keyof ...> usages in toContainKey, toContainAllKeys, toContainAnyKeys, and toContainKeys with __internal.IfNeverThenElse<..., PropertyKey> variants.
Globals & ambient overrides
packages/bun-types/globals.d.ts, packages/bun-types/overrides.d.ts
Switched several ambient imports to Node-prefixed specifiers (node:perf_hooks, node:util, node:fs/promises, node:tls); added LibEmptyOrNodeCryptoWebcryptoSubtleCrypto and updated SubtleCrypto/Performance typings; changed TextEncoder.encodeInto to import("node:util").TextEncoderEncodeIntoResult; added declare module "console" with [Symbol.asyncIterator](): AsyncIterableIterator<string>.
Integration test updates
test/integration/bun-types/fixture/test.ts, test/integration/bun-types/bun-types.test.ts, test/integration/bun-types/fixture/console.ts
Updated tests to import Matchers, use typeof obj for matcher generics, adjust @ts-expect-error lines and spy typings, add "Cases for #24591", write fixture tsconfig.json with skipLibCheck: false in teardown, insert formatting newline, and update expected diagnostics to node:-prefixed type names and ReadableStream<NonSharedUint8Array>.
Package manifests / resolutions
package.json, test/package.json, test/integration/next-pages/package.json, test/js/third_party/next-auth/fixture/package.json
Added or pinned @types/node to 25.0.0 in resolutions/devDependencies across manifests and made minor JSON formatting adjustments.

Pre-merge checks

✅ Passed checks (4 passed)
Check name Status Explanation
Title check ✅ Passed The PR title accurately describes the main changes: updating @types/node to version 25 and implementing a PropertyKey fallback for test expect matchers when keyof unknown resolves to never.
Linked Issues check ✅ Passed The PR successfully addresses issue #25456 by implementing the IfNeverThenElse utility type to provide PropertyKey fallback in toContainKey matchers, preventing never type inference when .not returns Matchers.
Out of Scope Changes check ✅ Passed Changes to @types/node versions and overrides.d.ts updates are supporting changes aligned with the PR objectives; all code modifications directly address the linked issue or its dependencies.
Description check ✅ Passed The PR description is minimal but covers the essential information: what the PR does (fixes issues #25456 and #25461, falls back to PropertyKey in test matchers), why (developers cannot pass values when expect values resolve to never), and how verification was done (bun types integration test).

Learning: In the bun repository, explicitly adding transitive dependencies as direct dependencies in package.json is acceptable and encouraged when addressing security vulnerabilities (e.g., adding "braces": "^3.0.3" to force upgrade from vulnerable versions < 3.0.3 affected by CVE-2024-4068). This pattern ensures vulnerable transitive dependencies are upgraded even when direct dependencies haven't updated their requirements.

Learning: In the Bun repository, packages under packages/ (e.g., bun-otel) can follow a TypeScript-first pattern where package.json exports point directly to .ts files (not compiled .js files). Bun natively runs TypeScript, so consumers import .ts sources directly and receive full type information without needing compiled .d.ts declaration files. For such packages, adding "declaration": true or "outDir" in tsconfig.json is unnecessary and would break the export structure.

Learning: In the Bun repository, standalone packages under packages/ (e.g., bun-vscode, bun-inspector-protocol, bun-plugin-yaml, bun-plugin-svelte, bun-debug-adapter-protocol, bun-otel) co-locate their tests with package source code using *.test.ts files. This follows standard npm/monorepo patterns. The test/ directory hierarchy (test/js/bun/, test/cli/, test/js/node/) is reserved for testing Bun's core runtime APIs and built-in functionality, not standalone packages.

10-10: LGTM!

The Matchers type import is correctly added to support the new test cases demonstrating Matchers<unknown> usage.

246-260: LGTM! Type parameter change aligns with the fix.

The generic type parameter correctly changed from keyof typeof obj to typeof obj. This allows the matcher to extract keys internally and fall back to PropertyKey when keyof unknown would resolve to never. The additional simple checks at lines 248-250 properly verify that non-existent keys are caught.

262-275: LGTM! Consistent type parameter updates.

The toContainAllKeys tests correctly apply the same type parameter change pattern, using typeof obj instead of keyof typeof obj. The simple checks properly verify error cases.

277-295: LGTM! Consistent pattern applied.

The toContainAnyKeys tests follow the same type parameter update pattern. All changes are consistent with the PR's objectives.

297-311: LGTM! Alias matcher updated consistently.

The toContainKeys tests (alias for toContainAllKeys) apply the same type parameter pattern. All updates are consistent.

414-423: LGTM! Core test cases for the fix.

These test cases directly demonstrate that the fix resolves issue #25456. When using Matchers<unknown> (e.g., from .not), the key-based matchers now correctly accept PropertyKey arguments instead of resolving to never. This validates the fallback behavior introduced in the PR.

Never use hardcoded port numbers in tests. Always use port: 0 to get a random port
Prefer concurrent tests over sequential tests using test.concurrent or describe.concurrent when multiple tests spawn processes or write files, unless it's very difficult to make them concurrent

Tests for CLI-only features use backend: "cli" flag (e.g., test/bundler/bundler_compile_splitting.test.ts). The CompileBuildConfig interface correctly restricts these with splitting?: never;. When documenting CLI-only bundler features, add a note clarifying they're not available via the programmatic API.

Learning: In packages/bun-types/telemetry.d.ts and src/telemetry/telemetry.zig, the naming inconsistency between `kind` (public API) and `type` (internal implementation) is intentional. The public API uses `InstrumentInfo.kind: InstrumentKind` with string values ("http", "fetch", etc.) for developer ergonomics, while the internal implementation uses `InstrumentRecord.type: InstrumentType` with numeric enum (0-6) for O(1) dispatch performance. This dual naming provides both ergonomic strings externally and efficient numeric dispatch internally without compromising either developer experience or runtime performance.

test/integration/bun-types/bun-types.test.ts (1)

438-442: Updated diagnostic expectation matches new Node/Bun typings

The adjusted snapshot string for the Blob/ReadableStream diagnostic (using import("node:buffer").Blob and ReadableStream<NonSharedUint8Array>) correctly reflects the new type definitions after the @types/node/bun-types update. No further changes needed here.

packages/bun-types/globals.d.ts (3)

1696-1696: LGTM - Performance constructor declaration added.

This addition correctly exposes the Performance constructor type when LibDomIsLoaded is false, allowing access to the constructor from node:perf_hooks. The pattern is consistent with other global declarations in the file (e.g., TextEncoder, TextDecoder).

232-232: The return type update to import("node:util").TextEncoderEncodeIntoResult is correct and aligns with @types/node version 25. The type structure reflects the standard { read: number; written: number } shape defined in the Web API specification and Node.js documentation.

17-22: The Performance type updates are correct.

The changes properly use the node: prefix for importing from node:perf_hooks and node:util, which is the standard approach for Node.js built-in modules. The new NodePerfHooksPerformanceConstructor type correctly exports typeof import("node:perf_hooks").Performance, allowing the Performance constructor to be properly declared on line 1696. The conditional type pattern (where types resolve to {} when LibDomIsLoaded is true) maintains consistency with other type definitions in the file.
