The two things #828 left under "Not here": text that was skipped, or never reached, read as run in the control flow profiler, which is what bun test --coverage turns into lines.

What was wrong

Text Before Now
a?.b(f()), a?.[f()], a?.(f()), a.b?.(f()), delete a?.[f()], with a null ?. and what is after it read as run A basic block, up to the end of the chain
a?.b.c?.d(f()) The same Each ?. has its own, one in the other
x ||= f(), x &&= f(), x ??= f(), on a variable, o.a or o[k] f() read as run when the assignment was skipped The right side is a basic block
function g(a = f()) { }, ({ a = f() }) => { }, const { a = f() } = o, [a = f()] = l, for (const { a = f() } of l), catch ({ a = f() }) f() read as run when there was a value The default value is a basic block
function* g() { a(); yield 1; b(); }, one next() b() read as run What is after the statement is a basic block
async function g() { a(); await p; b(); }, p never settles or is rejected b() read as run The same
The same with yield*, in an async generator, in an async arrow function, and at the top level of a module The same The same
A generator left with return() or throw() What is after the yield read as run Not run

The report contradicted itself: in x ||= make(), skipped, make() had a count of 1 on its line and function make a count of 0.

How

What is skipped uses emitProfileControlFlow(textOffset, textEndOffset), as ||, &&, ?? and ?: do: a block in the block around it, with nothing to resume after it.

  • emitOptionalCheck() takes the offset where the block starts, and the stack of targets has the end of each chain. The block starts at the end of the base. The callee of a call is not a node that could have an end offset, so there it starts at ?., which the divot is after.
  • The end of a chain is on the expression in the OptionalChainNode. That of the node itself is overwritten by what the chain is in: parseProperty() sets it past the next token, and parentheses after the ). delete a?.b replaces the expression, and keeps its end. a?.b ?? c takes the expression out of the node and gives it the end of the operand, which is where the block of c starts and is after the ) in (a?.b) ?? c, so CoalesceNode keeps the end of the chain.
  • emitShortCircuitAssignment() takes the right side and the end of the expression, which its six callers have.
  • A default value goes through parseDefaultValueForDestructuringPattern(), which records where it ends.
  • The block of a right side and of a default value starts one character before it, as the then block of ?: does, so that an arrow function there does not share a block, and a count, with its own code. startOffsetOfBasicBlock() moves to the header for the default value of a parameter.
  • None of the three is in the test of a case. case a?.b === 1: return 1; that does not match reads as not run, as case a.b === 1: return 1; does, and a block of its own in the test would make the line read as run. &&, ||, ?? and ?: have their blocks there, as on main.

What is never reached uses emitProfileControlFlowAfter(statement), as if, a loop, return or try do. SourceElements::emitBytecode() emits it after a statement that added a yield point to the generator. A statement that has emitted its own does not get a second one, which emitProfileControlFlowAfter() sees to: two ops with the same range share a counter, and it would count twice.

  • export and import had no end offset, and what is after export const a = await f(); needs one. parseModuleSourceElements() records it.

V8 has its counter after the resume point itself, up to the end of the block around it. Here the order of the bytecode is not the order of the text in enough places (case await f():, the update of a for, a computed key in a pattern) that each needs a special case, and x = c ? await a : b; f(); still has f() as run. After the statement is what Istanbul has, and needs none of them.

What does Bun do that JSC does not like?

Nothing. Bun turns the profiler on and reads its basic blocks, as Web Inspector does.

Why does upstream not have the issue?

It does. The profiler is from 2014 (https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=137785). Each of these came later and did not get a profiling point: default values in 2015 (https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=142679, https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=38409), optional chaining in 2019 (https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=200199), logical assignment in 2020 (https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=209716). Web Inspector dims text that has not run, where an operand that is not dimmed is hard to see. Bun prints a count for every line and fails a build on a threshold.

What changes

Only what changes, each row one behaviour.

A bug, now right

Text main Here
What is after a ?. whose base is null or undefined Ran, with the count of the block around it Did not run
The right side of ||=, &&=, ??= that does not assign The same Did not run
A default value that is not used The same Did not run
Any of the three, used some of the times The count of the block around it Its own count
What is after a statement with a yield, a yield* or an await, in a function or a module that is not resumed, or is resumed with return(), throw() or a rejection Ran Did not run
The same, resumed some of the times The number of calls The number of times it was reached

A bug, still a bug in another way

Text main Here
What is left of the same statement after a yield or an await that is not resumed, when that statement is in one of the new blocks: P() in const { a = await p + await P() } = o Ran, with the count of the function Ran, with the count of the new block, which is nearer: 2 and 1 where it is 0

Not a bug before, a bug now: none.

Right before and after, but different

Text main Here
Any of the three in the head of a loop: .next in while (node?.next), f() in for (const { a = f() } of l), ++i in for (; i < 3; x &&= ++i) The count of the statement, as the rest of the head: 1 for .next and a list of three The number of times it ran: 3. node.next in while (node && node.next) has 3 on main
The ) in (a?.f)?.() with a null, where JSC makes one chain of the two Ran Did not run, as what is before and after it
import "a", export { b } from "a", export { c } and the export of export function f() { } after an await at the top level of a module that is not resumed Ran Did not run, as after throw 1; on main

Not here

As on main:

  • What is left of the same statement after a yield or an await that is not resumed: f(await p, g()) has g() as run.
  • The test of a case that was evaluated and did not match reads as not run, but for the right side of &&, ||, ?? and the arms of ?: in it.
  • throw() or return() on a generator that has not started reads its body as run, here up to its first statement with a yield.

With the profiler off

Running code: nothing changes. No file of LLInt, of a JIT or of the runtime is changed, and every new bytecode instruction is behind shouldEmitControlFlowProfilerHooks(). --dumpGeneratedBytecodes=1 --useJIT=0 with the profiler off, over the 6,575 files of JSTests/stress, es6 and controlFlowProfiler: 8,376,490 lines of bytecode, the same here and on main in 6,561 files. In 13 of the other 14 main differs from itself from one run to the next, and the last one is the same here and on main in twelve more runs of each.

One end offset is read with the profiler off: that of a tagged template is the key of its template object. In (tag`x`)?.y and a = (tag`x`) it is now after the ), as it is in c ? (tag`x`) : 0 on main. The key has to be one per site, and no other template ends after a ).

Parsing and generating bytecode do a little more, once per function:

  • The parser stores an end offset for a default value, for the base of a ?., for what is in a chain and for an item of a module.
  • A list of statements reads the number of yield points before each statement and compares it after.
  • emitOptionalCheck(), emitShortCircuitAssignment() and a default value test the flag, inline, before anything is called.
  • An entry of the stack of chain targets has an int more. A switch that is not a jump table sets a bool and puts it back.
Coverage off, instructions in user space main Here A copy of the binary of main
require("typescript"), 9.1 MB 2,071,368,108 2,071,336,271 -0.002% -0.002%
8 MB of nothing else: 30,000 functions of default values, chains and logical assignments, 6,000 generators and async functions, each run once 10,479,416,131 10,487,256,839 +0.075% -0.004%

Release builds of Bun from CI, oven-sh/bun#46183 and its merge base, which differ in WebKit and in tests. The least of 11 runs, taken in turns, with useJIT=0 and useConcurrentGC=0: the runs of one binary are then 0.01% to 0.09% apart. With the JIT on, the copy is 2.3% from the binary it is a copy of on the second file, and this is in that range.

No node, code block or executable grows: Node has m_endOffset already, and the int of CoalesceNode is in the padding after its bool. BytecodeGenerator, which lives while one code block is generated, grows by a pointer and a bool.

Tests

Five files in JSTests/controlFlowProfiler/, 13 to 15 ms each in run-jsc-stress-tests. optional-chain.js, logical-assignment.js, default-values.js and yield-and-await.js fail on main. top-level-await.js is for the end offset of an export, without which the profiler aborts on an assertion: $vm.basicBlockExecutionCount() looks in the text of a function, so the counts at the top level of a module are for Bun's tests. The 22 files of controlFlowProfiler and the 63 runs of typeProfiler pass.

Each part undone, one at a time:

Undone Fails
No block for the default value of a parameter default-values
No block for a default value in a pattern default-values
The end of a default value is not recorded default-values, logical-expression, yield-and-await

The chain in (a?.b) ?? c ends with the operand: as a value, as a condition (two rows) optional-chain each
One of the 20 uses of emitOptionalCheck() has no offset (twenty rows) optional-chain each, logical-expression for three
?., a logical assignment or a default value has its block in the test of a case (three rows) optional-chain, logical-assignment, default-values

The end of an item of a module is not recorded top-level-await
The block starts with the expression, not one character before: right side, default value in a pattern, default value of a parameter (three rows) logical-assignment, default-values, default-values

Not in the PR:

  • 60,000 random functions (plain, generator, async, async generator) in which every leaf is a call that counts itself, so that the count of each of 1,787,975 positions is known, run on main and here. Ran or not: 194,429 wrong on main and right here, 0 the other way round. Exact count: 229,590, and 1 the other way round: it never ran, has 2 on main and 1 here, and 2 is the number of times its loop was entered, which the check takes as right in the head of a loop. It is the row under "still a bug". 32,223 are wrong on both, and those I looked at are what is under "Not here".
  • Exact counts in hot code: 13 functions with the new blocks, 300,000 calls of each, and an async function, 30,000. Right with useJIT=0, useDFGJIT=0, useFTLJIT=0, the defaults, useConcurrentJIT=0 with low thresholds, and useOSRExitFuzz=1. Each function is compiled by Baseline and by DFG. FTL does not compile ProfileControlFlow, on main or here.
  • $vm.dumpBasicBlockExecutionRanges() after each of the same 6,575 files: 500,105 blocks in the 6,527 that end in time, none empty or inverted, and 51 pairs in 8 files that overlap, as on main. With the profiler on no file ends differently from main, but for the four new tests.

Assert execution of the fulfilled for await body.

After testForAwait([1]), this test checks foo(2) but not the loop-body call foo(1). A profiler regression that misses the fulfilled loop body can therefore pass. Assert that foo(1) has an execution count of 1. (github.com)

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the m_isInCaseTest scoping: the SetForScope covers only the clause-test loop on the non-jump-table path, clause bodies are emitted after it, and the jump-table path only ever has literal constants as tests, so no ?., logical assignment or default value can appear there. The after-yield op in SourceElements::emitBytecode was also checked for double counting with a statement that emits its own after-op (if, loops, return, try): emitProfileControlFlowAfterSlow records the statement pointer, so the second op is skipped.

Extended reasoning...

The change extends op_profile_control_flow emission in the bytecode generator and parser for optional chains, logical assignment, default values and post-yield/await text, all behind shouldEmitControlFlowProfilerHooks(), with no runtime, JIT or security-sensitive surface touched. Two inline findings (export-wrapped function declarations after a top-level await, and the chain end offset for a parenthesised chain absorbed by ??) are posted separately; the case-test flag scoping and the yield-point double-count guard were examined from the diff and ruled out.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline nit, I checked the new commit for the parenthesised-chain case: makeCoalesceNode (Source/JavaScriptCore/parser/ASTBuilder.h:1421) now captures the inner expression's end offset before overwriting it, and both CoalesceNode emit paths push that value, so (a?.b) ?? c ends the skipped block at the chain rather than at the ). Also checked that the -1 default for m_optionalChainEndOffset is only read when m_hasAbsorbedOptionalChain is set.

Extended reasoning...

The latest push changes the CoalesceNode constructor, Nodes.h field, ASTBuilder.h and the two pushOptionalChainTarget call sites in NodesCodegen.cpp, plus a new test case in JSTests/controlFlowProfiler/optional-chain.js; the rest of the diff (emitOptionalCheck/emitShortCircuitAssignment/default-value profile ops, yield-point tracking in SourceElements::emitBytecode, case-test suppression, parser end-offset bookkeeping) is unchanged from the prior reviewed version. No security-sensitive surface is touched. The change is a non-trivial bytecode generator and parser modification across several node types, and one earlier inline thread on export declarations after a top-level await has no corresponding code change, so a human look remains worthwhile rather than approval.

…ver often it is asked, and the comments on the basic blocks of skipped code say why

I re-reviewed the latest push (d1e9821) and did not find any bugs; since this changes how the bytecode generator and parser compute basic-block text ranges across many node kinds, a human look from someone who knows the control flow profiler would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • The dedup moved into emitProfileControlFlowAfterSlow: checked that a statement that already emitted its own after-op (return/if/loop/try/block) and then triggers the yield-point path in SourceElements::emitBytecode gets exactly one op, and that the early return before the func-decl skip cannot drop a needed op.
  • The new emitProfileControlFlow call sites against the RELEASE_ASSERT(textOffset < textEndOffset): base end offsets are set before ?. and chain ends at endOfChain in Parser.cpp, optional-call starts come from divot - 2 which matches the isOptionalCall check at Parser.cpp:5674, and default/right-side starts are one before an expression that always follows =.
  • Parser end-offset changes with the profiler off: the only non-profiler reader is the tagged-template constant key in emitGetTemplateObject, and the new setEndOffset calls are deterministic per parse so the key stays stable across reparses.
Extended reasoning...

The change touches the JSC parser (Parser.cpp, ASTBuilder.h, Nodes.h, NodeConstructors.h) and bytecode generator (BytecodeGenerator.cpp/.h, NodesCodegen.cpp) to emit additional op_profile_control_flow instructions for optional chains, logical assignments, default values, and statements after yield/await, plus six new controlFlowProfiler tests; it touches no security-sensitive surface. Every new bytecode emission is behind shouldEmitControlFlowProfilerHooks(), and the parser-side end-offset changes only feed profiler ranges and the tagged-template constant key. The latest commit addressed earlier inline feedback (the parenthesised-chain end offset and the duplicate after-op) and the bug hunt ran dry, but the change is 769 lines across engine-core files covered by CODEOWNERS and relies on subtle text-offset identity semantics, so it does not meet the bar for an automated approve.

…await, reads as not run (#46183)

`bun test --coverage` said that code ran when it was skipped, or when
the function was left at a `yield` or an `await` and never came back.
The fix is in JavaScriptCore,
oven-sh/WebKit#851. This has the version and the
tests.

## Before and after

The number is how often the line ran.

```
main  here
   2     2 | function assign(o) {
   2     2 |   o.a ||=
   2     1 |     one();          // o.a was set in one of the two calls
   2     2 |   o.b &&=
   2     0 |     one();          // o.b never was
         - | }
   1     1 | async function stuck() {
   1     1 |   before();
   1     1 |   await new Promise(() => {});
   1     0 |   after();
         - | }
```

The report contradicted itself: `one()` had a count on its line in a
file where `function one` had none.

## What changes

Fewer lines read as run, so `% Lines`, `LH` and the list of uncovered
lines move, and with them the result of a `coverageThreshold`.

**A bug, now right**

| A line with only what is after a `?.` whose base is null or undefined
| ran | did not run |
| A line with only the right side of a `\|\|=`, `&&=` or `??=` that does
not assign | ran | did not run |
| A line with only a default value, of a parameter or in a pattern, that
is not used | ran | did not run |
| Any of the three, used some of the times | the count of the function |
its own count |
| The lines after a statement with a `yield`, a `yield*` or an `await`,
in a function or at the top level of a module, that is not resumed, or
is resumed with `return()`, `throw()` or a rejection | ran | did not run
|
| The same, resumed some of the times | the number of calls | the number
of times they were reached |
| `Profiler.takePreciseCoverage` of `node:inspector` with `detailed:
true`, for all of the above | no range | a range with its count. After a
`yield` or an `await` it is the range Node has. After `?.` it is
`?.a(one())` where Node has `?.a`. Node has none for a default value or
a logical assignment |

**A bug, still a bug in another way**

| Case | main | this PR |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A line with what is left of a statement after an `await` that is not
resumed, when it is in one of the three: the second of the lines `const
{ a = await p +`, `await q`, `} = o` | ran, with the count of the
function | ran, with the count of the default value |

**Not a bug before, a bug now:** none.

**Right before and after, but different**

| Case | main | this PR |
| --- | --- | --- |
| The line of a loop with one of the three in its head | the times the
loop was entered | the times that part ran, if that is more. `while
(node?.next) {` and a list of three: 3, as `while (node && node.next) {`
has on main. `for (const { v = one() } of list) {` and two items without
`v`: 2 |
| A line with `import "a"`, `export * from "a"` or `export { b }` after
an `await` at the top level of a module that is not resumed | ran | did
not run, as after `throw 1;` on main |

As on main: what is left of the same statement after an `await` that is
not resumed (`g()` in `f(await p, g())`), and `case a?.b: f();` that
does not match reads as not run.

## With coverage off

The bytecode is the same, and the parser and the bytecode generator do a
little more for each function.
oven-sh/WebKit#851 has what.

| Coverage off, instructions in user space | `main` | Here | | A copy of
the binary of `main` |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `require("typescript")`, 9.1 MB | 2,071,368,108 | 2,071,336,271 |
-0.002% | -0.002% |
| 8 MB of nothing else: 30,000 functions of default values, chains and
logical assignments, 6,000 generators and async functions, each run once
| 10,479,416,131 | 10,487,256,839 | +0.075% | -0.004% |

Release builds of Bun from CI, this PR at 8a47dce and its merge
base, which differ in WebKit and in tests. The least of 11 runs, taken
in turns, with `useJIT=0` and `useConcurrentGC=0`: the runs of one
binary are then 0.01% to 0.09% apart. With the JIT on, the copy is 2.3%
from the binary it is a copy of on the second file, and this is in that
range.

## Tests

- `generators.ts`, which had three functions of one statement, and
`skipped.ts` in `source-positions-corpus.ts`, in the six variants of
every program there. A line that is only `at();` is also checked against
the number of calls the program counted itself.
- `coverage.test.ts`: the top level of a module, with `export const`,
`export default` and `export { }` around the `await`s. The corpus cannot
have it, one of its bundles is CommonJS.
- `inspector-profiler.test.ts`: the text and the count of each range of
six functions.
- All four fail with the WebKit that main has.

Not in the PR: the same programs under Bun, Node (`NODE_V8_COVERAGE`)
and Istanbul, line by line, main against this. Of 793 lines in 32
programs of mine 7 change, from 1 to 0. Two are after a `yield` that is
not resumed, and are 0 on Node and Istanbul. Two are after a `?.` whose
base is null, and are 0 on Node. Three are the right sides of a `||=`, a
`&&=` and a `??=` that do not assign: Node says they ran, V8 has no
counter there. Of 9,589 lines in 603 programs of `JSTests/es6` none
changes.
sosukesuzuki pushed a commit to oven-sh/bun that referenced this pull request Oct 21, 2026
main moved WEBKIT_VERSION to d0b16ad0 (oven-sh/WebKit#851). That commit is merged
into oven-sh/WebKit#860 as bc7aebee, so the pin is that head's preview build.
