OSAC-4008: Add trimmed cross-component docs to osac/docs/ - #364
omer-vishlitzky merged 8 commits into
Conversation
Adds docs/ARCHITECTURE.md and docs/CONVENTIONS.md: hand-trimmed excerpts of osac-workspace's reference/ARCHITECTURE.md and reference/CONVENTIONS.md, keeping only cross-component content with no equivalent in any single component's own AGENTS.md (Data Flow, Entry Points, Error Handling, Cross-Cutting Concerns; the Cross-Repo Dependencies table). Controller counts and PublicIP->ExternalIP naming were corrected against the current codebase during the trim. Part of ADR 0001 exit-criterion (e). osac-workspace's reference/*.md will become symlinks into this directory in a follow-up osac-workspace PR (OSAC-4008 Task 4), once this merges. Assisted-by: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Tommy Hughes <tohughes@redhat.com>
Trims the "Console Proxy (Operator)" entry, which restated content already in osac-operator/AGENTS.md's own "Console Proxy" section almost verbatim (auth/discovery/WebSocket/TLS details) -- same duplication class the prior self-review round already fixed once for "Operator Controllers". Adds a missing "Console Proxy (Fulfillment)" entry: fulfillment-service registers a fourth `start` subcommand (`start console-proxy`, internal/cmd/service/start/consoleproxy/) alongside the three already documented (grpc-server, rest-gateway, controller) -- a distinct binary from the operator's console proxy, per fulfillment-service/docs/VM_CONSOLE.md's own architecture diagram. Assisted-by: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Tommy Hughes <tohughes@redhat.com>
- Update the fulfillment-service binary's subcommand list to include console-proxy, added by a prior fix but not reflected in this summary line. - Give Console Proxy (Operator) a Responsibilities line so all Entry Points items share the same Location/Triggers/Responsibilities shape (a prior trim-to-pointer fix dropped it while a sibling fix kept it). - Drop the State Management "Tenancy enforcement" bullet, which restated the Cross-Cutting Concerns "Multi-tenancy" bullet almost verbatim -- self-duplication within this same trimmed file. - Rename docs/README.md's title from a literal directory path to descriptive Title Case, matching its sibling files and the repo's README convention; add reciprocal links to ARCHITECTURE.md/ CONVENTIONS.md and a note reconciling their differing "Cross-Component"/"Cross-Repo" terminology. …ller claim CodeRabbit correctly flagged that ClusterOrder does have a feedback controller (FeedbackReconciler, registered as "clusterorder-feedback" in feedback_controller.go, sending the real gRPC Signal RPC) -- it was not, as previously documented, an exception with no feedback controller at all. Verified directly: clusterorder_controller.go's Status().Patch call is a separate in-cluster K8s status write, unrelated to the gRPC feedback signal, which is what I'd mistaken for "no feedback controller." ClusterOrder's only real distinction from the computeinstance-style pairing is that its feedback controller predates the per-resource-named-file convention and lives in the generic feedback_controller.go file instead of its own clusterorder_feedback_controller.go. Re-verified the two genuine pairing exceptions (BaremetalInstance feedback-only, Storage primary-only) still hold by grepping every sibling *_feedback_controller.go for its Named(...) registration. Also fixes docs/README.md's inconsistent provenance path (reference/CONVENTIONS.md -> osac-workspace/reference/CONVENTIONS.md, matching the full path already used for ARCHITECTURE.md). …w, fix exceptions list, add docs/ discoverability fullsend-ai-review flagged (and I verified directly against the codebase): - The "Resource Provisioning (Fulfillment to Operator)" data flow described fulfillment-service's internal reconciler (steps 1-3, its own process polling its own private API) and osac-operator's Kubernetes controller (steps 4-6, a different process watching CRDs) as one linear "Controller" flow. Verified both fulfillment-service's cluster and computeinstance internal controllers project DB state into the corresponding K8s CR via hubClient.Create/Patch -- that CR write is the actual boundary between the two independent control loops. Rewrote to make the two-process split and handoff point explicit. - Step 2 referenced a resource-specific "GetCluster" method that doesn't exist -- reconciler.go's findGetMethod/findListMethod discover a generic "Get"/"List" RPC via protobuf reflection, not per-resource method names. - The dual-controller pairing exceptions list named only BaremetalInstance and Storage. Grepped every Named(...) registration in osac-operator/internal/controller/ directly: Tenant and NetworkClassCapabilities are also primary-only, with no feedback pair. Added both, and hedged the list as "notable" rather than implying exhaustiveness. - Neither osac/AGENTS.md's "External Repos" table nor osac/README.md's component-docs pointer mentioned the new top-level docs/ directory added by this PR, risking confusion with the external osac-project/docs repo listed alongside it. Added a disambiguating line to both. Assisted-by: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Tommy Hughes <tohughes@redhat.com>

osac-workspace's ADR 0001 is a decision record scoped to that repo's own architecture (which repo owns what) -- there's no intention of ever moving ADRs into osac, so osac's own docs shouldn't carry a permanent external link to one. Reference the Jira ticket (OSAC-4008) instead, which is a neutral tracking system rather than a workspace-repo-specific artifact. …sistency - docs/ARCHITECTURE.md: disambiguate "onboarding (tenant)" -- it's a separate reconciler operating on tenant-onboarding tasks, not the tenant controller itself - AGENTS.md: link docs/ to docs/README.md, matching README.md's existing explicit-file-target pattern - README.md: add the same external-docs-repo disambiguation AGENTS.md already has, for readers who only see README.md Assisted-by: Claude Code <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Tommy Hughes <tohughes@redhat.com>

…claim The blanket "Logging: slog" statement in Cross-Cutting Concerns was only accurate for fulfillment-service. Verified directly: osac-operator and bare-metal-fulfillment-operator both call controller-runtime's zap.New()/ctrl.SetLogger(), and osac-metering wraps zap via zapr.NewLogger() behind a logr.Logger interface -- none of the three use slog. [low] naming-collision-risk
The new top-level docs/ directory shares its name with the existing external repo osac-project/docs listed in the External Repos table. Both AGENTS.md and README.md add disambiguation paragraphs ('not to be confused with the external docs repo'), which is the right mitigation. Future edits to these files should preserve this clarifying language.

Acknowledged — thanks for confirming. Will keep the disambiguation language intact in any future edits to these two files.

OSAC-4008: Add trimmed cross-component docs to osac/docs/
Jira: https://redhat.atlassian.net/browse/OSAC-4008
Story type: [DEV]
Summary
Adds
osac/docs/ARCHITECTURE.mdandosac/docs/CONVENTIONS.md— hand-trimmed, codebase-vetted excerpts of what used to beosac-workspace/reference/ARCHITECTURE.mdandreference/CONVENTIONS.md, keeping only the cross-component content with no equivalent infulfillment-service/AGENTS.mdorosac-operator/AGENTS.md(the exact duplication that caused a prior attempt at this move to be reverted, see OSAC-4006's248b45d0). Co-locates this content with the code it analyzes, matchingosac/'s existing per-componentdocs/convention.Why this is moving out of
osac-workspaceat all:osac-workspaceis being narrowed to a meta-workspace/bootstrapper, so component-analysis content that has a natural home closer to the code it describes (like these two files) is being relocated to that home instead of living centrally (tracked as part of OSAC-4008). The companionosac-workspacePR (#217, see below) replaces the originals with symlinks into this directory once this PR merges, so no consumer (AGENTS.md, thedesign-review/prd-reviewskills) needs any path changes.Changes
osac/docs/ARCHITECTURE.md(new) — Data Flow, Entry Points, Error Handling, Cross-Cutting Concerns only; Pattern Overview/Layers/Key Abstractions dropped as superseded by each component's ownAGENTS.mdosac/docs/CONVENTIONS.md(new) — Cross-Repo Dependencies table only (the partosac-workspace/AGENTS.md's Deployment Coordination section actually points readers at); all coding-standards content dropped as superseded byfulfillment-service/AGENTS.mdosac/docs/README.md(new) — provenance/maintenance notes, including an open item on the unconfirmed regeneration toolingVetted against the live codebase during implementation, correcting real drift beyond a mechanical copy:
fulfillment-service's controller count (18, not the stale "22+"), consistentPublicIP→ExternalIPrenaming, a previously-undocumentedNetworkClasscontroller, a third feedback-controller-pairing exception (ClusterOrder), and (found during a second independent review round) a duplicated Console Proxy description now trimmed to a pointer atosac-operator/AGENTS.md, plus a missingfulfillment-service start console-proxyentry point now documented.Testing
