Summary

Feature 009 memory core, increments A–E5 of the Spec Kit plan (specs/009-memory-core/): US1–US4
(recovery, work continuity and checkpoints, evaluation corrections, work/project/personal sharing)
implemented with isolated evidence (real-agent qualification T020/T023/T024 stays open), and US5
migration through its security closure and resource measurement. US6 has
its contract only (contracts/sync.md, T033, no code or dependency); US7, the resident-worker /
fallback amendment and the real-environment success criteria remain open and are listed in
HANDOFF-claude-code.md.

Base is 008-qd-d (#185) because this branch was cut from it; it retargets to main when #185
merges. Commits in this PR beyond #185:

  • 590c0a2f increments A–E2 checkpoint (US1–US5 partial)
  • 943660a4 import promote --work / --list
  • 7f37376c migration preview/mapping/round-trip matrix and preview accounting fixes
  • 849fde57 migration import cannot select, downgrade or rehydrate local memories (US5 security review closure)
  • 0e92d4b4 macOS platform-check runbook (T040)
  • 4257eeee handoff
  • 97bbe882 import merge in one scratch transaction with cached statements (near-limit apply 3,228 s → 108 s, RSS 304 → 181 MiB)
  • b2e9e931 E5 receipts and the CLI RSS budget appendix
  • 04bd7ac6 device sync contract (T033) and research R8; eb0cfc2d handoff

Validation

  • Full gate on the final tree (quickstart.md E4/E5 tables): typecheck, lint, build,
    1,180 unit/migration/script checks and 202 serial E2E/fault on Node 24.16.0 and 22.16.0,
    pack-check; receipts under /var/tmp/oboete-009-20260909.jJ5grc/ (us5-sec12-*, us5-perf1-*)
  • Codex read-only security rounds on the migration merge (nine, final 0 findings), code-review high
    (0 open findings), ponytail-review, semgrep (0 findings) — quickstart.md E4
  • Packed-CLI resource measurement against the E1 baseline, counts/effects identical — quickstart.md E5
  • Real multi-agent / real-model / seven-day / macOS runs are not claimed; SC-006 macOS is a
runbook (docs/evidence/memory-core-2026-09/macos-runbook.md) pending the M1 iMac session

Constitution compliance

  • Principles I–VI: capture stays fail-open and model-free; classification fail-closed; secret
text never leaves the store (native export, migration receipts, sync contract); egress table unchanged
  • No real credentials, private memory content, database files, or private local paths
  • Schema: migration 0007 (migration_imports/migration_records, replica_identity) is new and
unshipped; 0001–0006 unchanged. CLI: oboete import / export / import promote are new
commands; no existing CLI, configuration or hook contract changes
  • No new third-party material
  • Documentation and tests updated where behavior changed

Provenance and license

  • Every commit is signed off (DCO)
  • Apache-2.0, inbound = outbound
  • No third-party code copied in
  • AI assistance: Claude Code (Claude Fable 5.1) wrote the security-relevant code and documents; Codex
(OpenAI) implemented delegated increments and the scratch-transaction perf change and produced the
read-only security and contract reviews. All output was reviewed and does not reproduce third-party code.

Additional context

Owner decisions of 2026-09-11 (merge on isolated gates + reviews; real-world success criteria as
follow-up issues with the dogfood cron; US6 = encrypted bundle files with Node crypto only, R2
later; import/export CLI RSS budget 512 MiB) are recorded in research.md R8, plan.md D and
contracts/migration.md. Rollback: revert the branch; 0007 has not shipped, so no data migration
is needed.

Follow-ups deliberately left open

Recorded rather than fixed here, each with its reasoning in the issue:

Checkpoint of the isolated 009-memory-core implementation accumulated
since c9a9e58: source recovery and retention (US1), work continuity and
checkpoints (US2), replay evaluation accounting (US3), scoped sharing and
approval (US4), native v2 transfer, the pinned claude-mem query-export
adapter, local quarantine classification and explicit migration
promotion (US5 in progress), with migrations 0004-0007 and the spec
artifacts under specs/009-memory-core.

T029-T032 remain open: the remaining preview/terminal/race test matrix,
resource measurements and complete US5 reviews follow in later commits.
The exact native v2 and claude-mem wire appendices in
contracts/migration.md and research.md R7 were verified claim by claim
against the pinned source. Both supported Node versions pass 1,181
unit/migration/script and 202 serial E2E/fault checks and pack-check
at this snapshot (receipts: /var/tmp/oboete-009-20260909.jJ5grc/us5-e2-*).

Replace the redundant --map-work <source>=<local> form with
--work <local-work-id> (the clean payload already pins the source work)
and add `oboete import promote --list` so operators can discover held
sharing-proposal receipts without SQL; the listing shares the exact
eligibility predicate with promotion and prints only IDs, states and
counts.

Close six review findings: promotion now requires an import-created
origin (effect = inserted) so a candidate can never attach a work grant
to a pre-existing local memory; operational errors (busy, I/O) propagate
to the CLI's exit-3 handler instead of the fixed unavailable result; and
three phantom unavailable-case rows now isolate the clause they name.

Both supported Node versions pass 1,203 unit/migration/script and 202
serial E2E/fault checks plus pack-check (us5-e2b-* receipts).

…counting fixes

Add ten focused migration matrix cases: preview context candidates,
bounded project/unresolved accounting with matching human and JSON
counts, missing/behind/ahead/writer-held destinations, changed and
conflicting mappings rolling back whole imports, shared destination
repositories with distinct origins, pending/approved/rejected proposal
round trips as private history, terminal source dependencies surviving
a forged plaintext replay, personal identity after grant revocation,
and packed CLI output bounded to metadata.

Fix the defects they exposed: a repeated preview now computes mappings
so collisions and resolution are reported identically, preview lists up
to ten context candidate IDs per unresolved repository as the contract
requires, the native preview prints the source block, and the human
output reports one unresolved total instead of an omission count for a
list it never printed. A shared test output helper replaces five copies.

Both Nodes pass 1,213 unit/migration/script checks; serial E2E/fault is
202/202 on Node 22 and 201/202 on Node 24 under concurrent measurement
load (documented seed miss, rerun in isolation follows).

…l memories

Close the US5 security review (Codex read-only rounds, code-review
finders, semgrep). A redacted personal_projection hash could select any
ordinary memory by content_hash and tombstone or block it; it now only
resolves rows already known as personal projections and is otherwise
held. Text-bearing personal hashes stay verifiable and resolve any row.

Sensitivity is raise-only through every path: the UPDATE carries a rank
guard, dependency sources must be edge-only and never rank below their
parent, and raiseToParents walks an identity-keyed worklist over the
recorded lineage so a parent that matched a stricter local row (or was
raised by the provenance trigger) lifts its imported descendants, with
unverifiable records merged last. Receipts take the stricter of the
final merged state and the live row; a record whose identity resolved
in another repository is stored hash-only (identity_elsewhere) together
with the records nested under it, and an orphan origin payload without
a terminal label is refused by the validator. Proposal receipts also
follow the projected memory's final state. promote --list no longer
loads payloads.

Sixteen authority cases plus one integrity case and an updated matrix
case cover the findings RED -> GREEN. Both Nodes pass 1,177
unit/migration/script and 202 serial E2E/fault checks; typecheck, lint
and pack-check are green. Contract and quickstart E4 record the fixed
specification points and accepted residuals.

fixed and how it was reviewed, the E5 perf job in flight in the 009-rss
worktree, the remaining order (E5, macOS probe, US6 to T033, US7 and the
amendment, final gates) and the verification habits that avoid the
load-only hook seed misses.

…tatements

Profiling the near-limit import showed the scratch SQLite plan paying a
journal create/fsync/delete per statement: mergeTransferPlan now wraps
its scratch writes in one transaction (rolled back on any failure,
committed before the destination commit) and the disposable scratch
runs with synchronous=OFF. That alone made a 1M-record apply 20x faster
but doubled its peak RSS: the merge prepared about ten statements per
record inside loops, and the faster run accumulated millions of native
statements before garbage collection released them. A per-database
prepared-statement cache (src/db/statements.ts) used by the merge,
insertSource and grantVisibility removes that, and the memory loop
scans the scratch in rowid order instead of sorting it.

Measured on Node 24.16.0 (packed CLI, /usr/bin/time -v):
100k memories apply 13:20 / 200 MiB -> 0:26 / 146 MiB; near-limit
1M-line apply 3228 s / 304 MiB -> 101 s / 168 MiB; preview 2987 s ->
31 s. Receipts under /var/tmp/oboete-009-20260909.jJ5grc/us5-rss2/.

The migration contract now states the import/export CLI budget of
512 MiB (owner decision 2026-09-11) separately from the 150 MiB engine
target, and the rollback test faults both the memory loop and the
receipt stage in preview, apply and no-destination modes. Full gate
us5-perf1: both Nodes 1,180 unit/migration/script checks, 202 serial
E2E/fault (Node 22 rerun in isolation after one load-only seed miss),
pack-check green.

Record the owner decision of 2026-09-11 (encrypted bundle files in a
user-chosen directory, one file per replica, Node crypto only, no new
dependency, R2 later) as contracts/sync.md: envelope (HKDF-SHA-256 per
bundle, AES-256-GCM chunks with the age STREAM nonce rule, key id and
fixed framing), a revision log whose identity fields are separate from
delivery, control revisions that carry deletions and sensitivity floors
without text, natural-key aliasing across origins, the push staging
fence with a data_version re-check under the writer lock, two-phase
apply with lineage inheritance, change capture against the last
materialized state, consent, commands, bounds, the 0008 shape and the
T034-T036 test list. Research R8 pins the Node crypto APIs and the age
payload rule and records why age-encryption/aws4fetch move to the R2
day; plan D is amended accordingly.

Eight fresh Codex contract reviews shaped the text; the last four
findings are folded in unconfirmed and the contract says so. T033 stays
unchecked until the owner confirms scope at this checkpoint.

Split exportNative into per-kind emitters.

SonarCloud reports cognitive complexity 42 against a limit of 15 for this function. The function now inlines eight record kinds with individual redaction predicates. Extract one small function per record kind (repos, memories, sources, contexts, work, visibility, sharing_proposal, migration_origin) and keep exportNative as the ordered driver. This also isolates each redaction rule for testing.

526-528: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

reconcilePendingDestinations repeats a full pending-batch scan for every batch.

processBatch runs once per pending batch inside processPendingBatches. Each call reconciles all pending batches, reading up to BATCH_SOURCE_LIMIT + 1 rows per batch and opening a write transaction. maintainQueue in src/worker/observe.ts Line 452 already reconciles once per pass.

With N pending batches this performs N+1 full reconciliations per pass, so the cost grows quadratically in N and adds a write-lock acquisition per batch.

Reconcile only this batch here, or rely on the per-pass reconciliation in maintainQueue and re-check input.batch.state after it.

Cache the configuration reload instead of reading it per detector call.

detect now calls loadConfig(paths) on every invocation. loadConfig performs existsSync, readFileSync, a TOML parse, and a full Zod parse that recompiles every secret_paths glob through secretPathRule.

classifyPending calls detect up to twice per row for a 50-row page, and revalidateSources and revalidateNearby call it per source and per nearby candidate. That produces hundreds of synchronous file reads and glob compilations per pass on the worker path.

Reload the configuration once per pass, or cache the parsed value and invalidate it on the file mtimeMs. Both keep a mid-run configuration change visible without per-call I/O.

Avoid running nextBatchCohort twice per processing pass.

Avoid a second write transaction after the capture barrier.

sessionForPi runs transactionImmediate, which takes a write lock and also re-runs bindCapturedWork. Line 224 calls it again only to refresh turnId and epoch after the wait.

The wait loop consumes up to remainingBudget() - 150 ms. Line 224 then requests a write lock at the tightest point of the 300 ms PI_INJECTION_DEADLINE_MS budget. If the capture process holds the write lock at that moment, transactionImmediate throws SQLITE_BUSY, the error reaches the handler at line 277, and the injection is skipped.

…x (Sonar PR 190)

Eight canonicalization sorts that feed hashes or proofs now pass
compareCodeUnits instead of relying on the default sort (S2871): the
intended order is UTF-16 code units, deterministic across locales,
which is why localeCompare is not the fix. The personal-preference
regex no longer overlaps its optional whitespace with the capture
(S8786). No behavior changes; 884 unit checks over the touched paths
pass.

One CI run failed matrix A1 on Node 22 with '2 !== 0' and an empty
message because the JSON-mode CLI writes its reason to stdout; the same
commit passed the other run and every local gate. The assertion now
falls back to stdout so the next occurrence names the reason.

…us (PR 190 review)

Three review findings on PR 190, each verified against the code before adoption:

- bindCapturedWork reused the current binding after `oboete work complete` set its
work to completed; reuse now requires the bound work to still be active.
- sharingStatus filtered a fixed LIMIT 51 slice after the privacy checks, so fifty
newer pending proposals whose origin was deleted hid every older valid one; it now
streams candidates and stops after fifty pass, with hasMore from the fifty-first.
- Migration 0005 parks pending sources as waiting with retry_after NULL, which
  `oboete doctor` reported as degraded (exit 1) on the first run after upgrade;
parked rows now count separately and warn like pending ones.

Implemented by Codex under review; gate (typecheck, lint, build, unit and serial
suites on Node 24.16.0 and 22.16.0, pack-check) green.

Codex round 9 (high 2, medium 3) and a five-lens adversarially verified review
(42 findings, 5 survived) on contracts/sync.md v8. Folded in: the push
`data_version` baseline now spans the change pass on one connection and the
"unchanged" exit runs after the step 4 re-check; `materialized_hash` excludes
deletions and raises the apply itself performs so the closing pass records them;
a resolution revision bypasses the checkpoint-parent chain and closes the
conflict; aliased origins share one head set, selected head and conflict row on
the canonical origin, with cross-origin parents allowed among them; checkpoint
tombstones sweep already stored rows of the same work and material; contexts
ship identity-only until a payload of their repository ships; observer conflict
rows are listed and closed alongside sync rows; the 32-replica error names the
files without a cursor and `leave` removes the replica's own bundle; the
verification list gains the matching cases.

Codex round 10 (high 1, medium 4): a single-parent successor of an origin with one
head matched the resolution rule and could bypass the checkpoint-parent check, and
a local edit built on a selected head whose payload was withheld. v10 restricts
resolutions to multi-parent revisions, parents local edits on the last materialized
revision (`materialized_revision`), stores cross-origin parent links but binds them
only once the reader aliases both origins, bounds heads per local row after
aliasing, lets `resolve --keep` name a checkpoint memory of a work, and fixes the
content filter's evaluation order for work-only repositories. Verification cases
added for each.

…034, part 1)

First slice of US6 from contracts/sync.md v10, written test-first:

- src/sync/identity.ts: canonical JSON, revision_id, payload_hash, snapshot_id.
- src/sync/envelope.ts: oboete-sync-bundle/1 over AES-256-GCM with the age STREAM
framing (64 KiB chunks, 11-byte counter plus final byte nonce, 44-byte prefix as
AAD, HKDF chunk keys per bundle salt); the reader is length-driven and rejects
truncation, reordering, splicing, a missing final chunk and a wrong key id.
- src/db/migrations/0008_sync.sql: sync_spaces, sync_cursors, sync_origins,
  sync_revisions (+ parents), sync_repo_mappings, sync_approvals; additive.
- src/sync/format.ts: header, revision and repo line schemas, natural keys per
  kind, entity reference table, bounds.
- src/sync/store.ts and capture.ts: origins with natural-key aliasing on a canonical
origin, stored revisions, derived heads per local row, effective control, and the
change pass that turns every tracked row into a revision authored by this replica
(successor of the last materialized revision) and vanished rows into tombstones.
- src/transfer-records.ts: the native v2 record iterators shared by export and sync.

Tests pin the ids, every envelope framing boundary and tamper case (mutation-checked
for the final flag and the AAD width), and the capture pass; migration tests now
derive the latest schema version from the constant.

…remote key

Round fourteen of the US6 review loop. Two of the five findings are
regressions round thirteen introduced, both in the same compensating-write
design: a rollback that undoes a write another process made.

`recordSpace` deleted the `[sync]` section on any failure, including the one
the loser of an `init` race hits — the in-transaction `assertNoSpace`, which
runs before this invocation writes anything. The delete took the winner's
config, leaving the winner's row and key with no config naming them: the one
state the compensation exists to prevent, since `leave` reads the config and
`assertNoSpace` keeps blocking re-init. It now deletes only what it wrote.

`leave` wrote the row deletions and the config removal in one transaction, so
a `COMMIT` that failed rolled the row back under a config already gone —
again a space `leave` cannot reach. The rows now commit first and the config
follows. That order can only stop with the config naming a space whose rows
are gone, which the next `leave` walks to the end.

`applyRepoLines` resolved a `remote:` key by normalized identity alone.
`repos.normalized_identity` is unique across both identity kinds, so a peer
that learned this device's `common_dir` path could send it under a `remote:`
key: the hash checks out, the `INSERT OR IGNORE` collides with the local row,
and the lookup handed the forged key that local repository — the same
auto-mapping the `common_dir` prefix check refuses, reached by the other
branch. The lookup is now qualified by `identity_kind = 'remote'`, and a repo
line whose declared kind disagrees with its own key prefix is rejected.

`--classes` was accepted and silently ignored outside `init`/`join`, so a
push typed to withhold a class exported the recorded set instead. Classes are
consent-bound, so the flag is refused there rather than honoured; `--republish`
outside `push` is refused for the same reason.

Streaming the publish side's origins is filed as #204 with the measurement it
needs first: that data is this device's own, not peer-supplied.

The `remote:` lookup added in 357ffcf closed the forged-key hole only for
identities the device already holds. Where it holds none, the peer's own line
creates the row: `repos.id` is the first 16 hex of `sha256(normalized_identity)`
— the same value `repo-identity.ts` computes — so the planted row carries the
id this device will compute when the developer next opens that path.
`storeRows` then adopts it by id, since its upsert rewrites only `display_root`
and `last_seen_at`, and the forged key is already mapped to it. The escalation
arrives one step later in time than the one that was closed.

`repoKeyFor` mints a `remote:` key only for a canonical remote identity, so
`applyRepoLines` now requires one. That refuses the plant and costs an honest
peer nothing, since no honest sender can produce such a line. The one canonical
form that is still a path — a `file://` remote normalizes to a bare path — is
recorded and left unmapped for `map-repo` rather than rejected: an honest
device with such a remote would otherwise have its whole bundle refused by
every peer.

Two more from the same pass:

Every repo key is now checked against the identity it declares, whichever
replica minted it, not only the two forms this device can resolve. An unmapped
key's identity is what `sync status` shows and what `map-repo` is run on the
strength of, so a key that misstates it is rejected even when nothing here can
bind it.

`registerLocalRepos` records the mapping's `identity_kind` from the key it just
built rather than from the `repos` row. `repoKeyFor` falls back to a
`common_dir` key for a `remote` row whose identity is not canonical, and a
mapping that published a `common_dir` key declaring `remote` is a line every
peer running the kind/prefix check rejects — taking this device's whole bundle
with it, permanently.

The repo-line bound fixture now carries the hashes an honest sender would have
computed, since the key check applies to it too.

Three passes over `applyRepoLines` in one review round each closed a way to
bind a machine-local repository and each exposed the next. That is the signal
that the premise was wrong rather than the code, so this commit corrects the
premise instead of patching a fourth time.

What is actually true: a peer knows this replica's id, because a bundle is
named for it, and this device's machine-local paths, because `publish` emits
both in this device's own repo lines. It can therefore author a revision
naming `${replica}:common_dir:${sha256(path)}`. `applyRepoLines` records that
key with no local repository, but `registerLocalRepos` binds the same key to
the real row the moment the developer opens that path, and `stage` accepts a
reference to any key already mapped, with or without a repo line. Rejecting
the line does not close it either: the bundle stays in the shared directory
and the next pull after the path is opened takes the mapped path instead.

So the space key is what bounds a peer here, not this pass. The header
comment, the `common_dir` branch comment, the contract's round-thirteen
bullet and the handoff each said the opposite; all four now say this, and the
contract carries a section naming the boundary and pointing at #205, where the
consent gate is designed rather than improvised mid-round.

What the three passes did close is real, pinned and unchanged: a `remote:`
line can no longer create a `repos` row under the id this device will later
compute for a path, and no key may misstate the identity it displays.

The command prints the key line itself, which is not JSON. It is meant to be
read off a terminal and carried to the next device by hand — the usage text is
the only line without `[--json]` — so the parser refuses the combination
rather than printing a secret to something that asked for a parseable stream.

The capture hook regressed from 187.3 ms to 222.2 ms after #190 grew the bundle
to two megabytes, because a cold process compiled the whole thing on every
invocation. `dist/` is two files now: `dist/oboete.mjs`, a small launcher that
turns Node's V8 compile cache on, and `dist/engine.mjs`, the program it imports.
The cache lives under `OBOETE_HOME` per CONSTITUTION.md Principle VI, in a
directory the launcher refuses unless it is a real directory of this user's that
nobody else can enter, and the three agent-invoked commands keep their
contracted exit 0 when the engine will not load.

Eighteen review rounds, twenty-five launcher pins, and a test harness that now
shares one compile cache so the suite measures the hook the way it actually
runs. Follow-ups filed and deliberately out of scope: #213, #214, #215, #216,
#217, #218.
