How do I configure Jedi?

Firstly, I'm using VSCodium, so if this isn't going to work, please let me know. That also means I can't switch to Pylance.

Jedi keeps adding parentheses when I autocomplete a callable, like for example, if I type except ValueE, it autocompletes to except ValueError(), which is obviously wrong. Reading the Settings page in the Jedi docs, it looks like the problem is due to jedi.settings.add_bracket_after_function being True for some reason. So I'd like to switch it off, but I don't see how to access it. That page says "Plugins should expose an interface so that the user can adjust the configuration", but I don't see that sort of interface in the Python extension settings.

Based on the Python Language Server settings docs, I tried switching python.languageServer from Jedi to Default and added "python.analysis.completeFunctionParens": false in my settings.json, but it's greyed out and has no effect.

Lastly, I checked for any existing discussions that mention "jedi config" but there aren't any, and I checked the main page for the Python extension, but it doesn't even mention Jedi.

That setting isn't supported for Jedi; "Default" for python.languageServer means "Pylance". If you would like to submit a PR to add support for such a setting we would be happy to consider it.

Well strictly speaking, "Default" means "Pylance if available, otherwise Jedi", but I get what you're saying, python.analysis settings only apply to Pylance.

Could you point me in the right direction for how to add support for Jedi config? I'll read the wiki of course, just want some idea of where in the code I should look.

@wjandrea the problem with parentheses autocompletion was fixed by a community contribution (#15858) and released in [email protected] (2023-06-08). Have you tried a newer version of the extension?

Thanks for mentioning the issue with v2023.18.0. I noticed that too.

I believe we had to tweak how installs work due to changes in Jedi (they now ship platform-specific wheels/binaries), so my guess is Open VSX isn't picking up on this change and thus is now missing the files since it doesn't know how to handle the platform-specific requirement (I don't know how they makes their VSIX of our repo, so I'm entirely speculating).

The issue with 2023.18.0 appears to be fixed now (EclipseFdn/open-vsx.org#2142).

Note that you may need to remove the cached extension from ~/Library/Application Support/VSCodium/CachedExtensionVSIXs in order to trigger a re-download of the new fixed extension build.

@br3ndonland That path doesn't exist for me. Is that a Mac thing? I don't know where cached extensions live on Linux so I just downloaded the VSIX manually and installed that and it's working now, thanks!

On Linux the equivalent path would be ~/.config/VSCodium/CachedExtensionVSIXs.
