The red The failing step is the generated-docs check, on three typedoc files this PR does not touch:
Normally autofix pushes that fix silently - there is an One part of it is real, and it belongs to #8042 rather than to this PR. #8042 deletes I am deliberately not fixing it by force-pushing a rebase of the stack. This is a draft that cannot merge until #7883 and #8042 do, so the red blocks nothing, and rebasing three stacked PRs to chase I also did not hand-commit the regenerated docs: locally that produces 44 changed files, including GitHub source-link reformatting that varies with the build environment. autofix.ci generating them in CI is the right mechanism; it just needs a base it can apply to.
|
|
Following up on my note above about the red The cause was that this branch's base predated develop's 2026-08-10 typedoc regeneration, so autofix.ci computed the right fix on the merge ref and then could not cherry-pick it onto a stale head. Merging the stack forward (which #7874 landing made necessary anyway) brings the base current, so autofix has something it can apply. No change to this PR's own commit - still the one grammar line, its tests and a changeset. |
|
Merged the stack forward onto the Cypress-to-Playwright migration; mergeable again. Nothing here touches an e2e spec, so this was just carrying #8042's port through - the only conflict was the regenerated typedoc page. 150 C4 unit tests pass. This PR's own change is still the one grammar line, its tests and a changeset. |

The second slice of the in-place migration, after elements moved in mermaid-js#7842. Relationships now go through the shared edge renderer: dashed lines, arrowheads, labels and the offsets and colours `UpdateRelStyle` sets, instead of the legacy renderer's own line drawing. Two things the shared path needs that the legacy one did not: A label is built for the effective `htmlLabels` setting, because `createText`'s non-markdown branch emits tags as ordinary words - with HTML labels off, markup rendered as literal characters. Unit tests cover both forms and a hostile string. A colour from `UpdateRelStyle` is checked with `CSS.supports('color', ...)` before it reaches a style string, so a value carrying a `;` cannot corrupt the declaration it lands in.
The last slice of the in-place migration. C4 diagrams are laid out by the unified dagre pipeline instead of the legacy row grid, which lets `c4Renderer.ts`, `svgDraw.ts` and the measure-then-layout adapter go: boundaries become group nodes, relationships become edges, and the spacing a diagram sets reaches the layout directly. `C4Dynamic` step numbering is preserved. `$link` starts working as a side effect, because the unified renderer wraps a linked node in `svg:a` - the characterization test that asserted it was unsupported now asserts the anchor. Two things the deleted renderer did are kept: the colour guard `asColor` moves to the shape adapter, and `UpdateRelStyle`'s `$offsetX`/`$offsetY` travel with the edge and are applied to the label after the shared pipeline has placed it. The db holds those offsets as strings when they arrive as named attributes, so they are coerced on the way in and a non-numeric value is dropped.
`direction TB|BT|LR|RL` lexed but had no rule in the statement list, so a diagram that set it was rejected rather than laid out that way. The db already stores a direction and the unified pipeline already reads one; this connects the statement to them.

# Conflicts: # e2e/rendering/c4/c4-characterization.spec.js
…sed e2e layout The develop merge deleted the old c4-characterization spec. Its DOM assertions for this PR (the $link anchor, the javascript: scheme, the $c4ShapeInRow no-op) cannot be fixtures, so they move to hand-written specs: the link checks to pr-check (a security property), the cross-render layout comparison to nightly-check. The link fixture description no longer says the link is not rendered.

The bug
The C4 grammar has defined a
directionrule for a long time, with lexer rules for all four values:But the production hangs off
startonly:After
C4Context NEWLINEthe parser is instatements, which never referencesdirection. So writingdirection LRinside a C4 diagram - the only place anyone would write it - is a parse error. The rule was reachable in theory and dead in practice. The fix
One line, wiring it into
otherStatementalongsidetitleandaccDescription:Nothing else is needed on this branch: #8042 already adds
setDirection/getDirectiontoc4Db, andgetDataalready forwardsdb.getDirection()intoLayoutData, which the unified layout honours. That is why this is a one-line change rather than a feature - the plumbing landed with the layout slice, and only the grammar hook was missing.Tests
c4LayoutData.spec.tspreviously asserted only that the direction was a string, which passes whether or not the statement parses. Replaced with the real thing:it.each(['TB', 'BT', 'LR', 'RL'])- each value parses from a diagram body and reachesLayoutDataTB148 C4 unit tests pass;
tsc, eslint and Prettier clean.Where this sits
First slice of Phase 3 in the #7849 tracker (the legacy-parity statements). The rest of that phase -
AddElementTag/AddRelTag,SHOW_LEGEND(),UpdateElementStyleshadowing,UpdateBoundaryStyle,$spriteicons - is deliberately not in this PR. Those were written against the pre-#7842 renderer, wherec4LayoutData.tswas 412 lines and elements resolved to dedicatedc4-database/c4-person/c4-foldershapes. After #7842 that file is 147 lines and those shape names no longer exist, so porting them is re-implementation rather than a rebase, and each deserves its own reviewable PR. This one was genuinely a one-line rebase, so it comes first.Summary
