The draft now covers all five C4 diagram kinds end to end:
Test totals on this branch: 38 c4-beta unit tests + 31 grammar tests + 6 cypress rendering tests; legacy C4 suite unaffected. |
Reviewer notesPart of the C4 series tracker: #7849. Draft supporting RFC https://github.com/orgs/mermaid-js/discussions/7844 - syntax feedback there is more valuable than line comments here at this stage. Review by commit - the narrative is: grammar (langium) -> diagram skeleton -> coverage tests -> person shape -> kind validation -> dynamic numbering -> tag styling -> deployment nodes -> docs/demo -> type fix. Purely additive: the legacy Verify in 2 minutes: Coverage: 38 c4-beta unit tests + 31 grammar tests + JSDOM renderer tests (~98% folder coverage) + 6 cypress rendering tests. |

Thanks @knsv, really appreciate that - and good catch on CI. A subgraph title is drawn above its children, and the space for it was reserved one level up only. A title in a nested subgraph therefore overlapped the children of the subgraph it sat in, and the deeper the nesting the worse it got. Every ancestor's reserve now accumulates, so a title always has its own band whatever the depth, with e2e coverage at two margin sizes. Edges move with their endpoints: each route point and label shifts by the reserve of the clusters around the ends it connects, and a merged self-loop, whose points are already placed, is not shifted a second time. The overlap was most visible in C4 diagrams, where every boundary is a cluster.
A Langium grammar for the `c4-beta` syntax proposed in the RFC: the four diagram kinds, the element keywords with their optional description and technology, the nesting that expresses containment, relationships with an optional technology, dynamic step numbers, tags and style statements. The token builder keeps element keywords usable as identifiers, so a diagram can name a node `container` without the grammar taking it for the keyword.
…lder The two nested-subgraph title fixtures now live in e2e/diagrams/flowchart/nested-subgraph-title/, so they form their own Argos sheet instead of joining diagrams/flowchart. e2e/sheet-order.json pins 139 of the 146 flowchart fixtures on develop. The unpinned rest is laid out alphabetically after them, and these two names sort before three of those fixtures, so every tile after them moved one cell and flowchart-012 and flowchart-013 were reported as changed although nothing in them re-rendered.
Renders the new syntax through the unified pipeline: elements become nodes, containment becomes clusters, relationships become edges, and each diagram kind decides which elements are legal in it. Person renders through the general-purpose `person` shape rather than one of its own, so the two C4 syntaxes draw the same vocabulary. Deployment nodes carry instance counts, and an infrastructure node is a first-class element rather than a container in disguise. An element that is external is tagged rather than keyworded, which keeps the grammar smaller and lets a diagram style it like any other tag.
…t data A deployment diagram nests four levels deep and needs more room above a cluster title than the flowchart default leaves. The margin is read from the layout data when the diagram supplies it, and falls back to the config otherwise, so no existing diagram changes.
Seven rendering cases across the four diagram kinds, including the live deployment example from the C4 model site, which is the one that exercises instance counts, an infrastructure node and four levels of nesting at once. The beta-keyword policy test is extended to cover `c4-beta`, so the diagram cannot ship without the suffix while the syntax is still moving.
WebKit (Safari, Preview) paints HTML that has CSS opacity inside a foreignObject without the ancestor SVG transforms. The technology line and the instance badge of deployment nodes were therefore drawn stacked at the top-left corner of the diagram. Use a translucent title colour for .cluster small and the instance badge instead of opacity. The look in Chromium is unchanged.

The title reserve reads each cluster's label height, but dagre only measured a cluster label while painting it, after layout. Every reserve therefore fell back to the flat margin, so a title taller than `subGraphTitleMargin` still overlapped the cluster's first row. `measureDagreGraph` now measures each cluster title before layout, the same way `insertCluster` paints it (plain labels unwrapped, markdown wrapped), and only when a title margin is set. A recursively rendered cluster measures its own title too, and its painter moves children, edges and nested clusters down by however much a title overflows the margin. When every title fits, the output is unchanged.
|
@coderabbitai The outside-diff finding on Dagre measured a cluster's title only while painting it, after layout, so no cluster had a The regression tests render real flowcharts, one with an extracted cluster and one with a top-level cluster, each with a title taller than the margin. Both fail on the previous head, with the first child 45px and 35px below the cluster top against a 50px title. |

The new regression test renders both an extracted cluster and a top-level cluster, then checks that the first child clears the title. I did not run the tests, but the code and test coverage address the finding. Thanks for the explanation. ✏️ Learnings added

Prototype of
c4-beta- a new, experimental C4 diagram type with a clean, Structurizr-DSL-inspired syntax, implemented with a langium grammar and rendered through the unified rendering pipeline (dagre by default, ELK compatible). This PR is a draft opened to support the RFC discussion (linked below) with working code; it is purely additive and does not touch the legacy
