📑 Summary

Previously, the parser did not enforce strict rules for comment detection. As a result, it could incorrectly interpret inline %% sequences as comments and treat lines starting with a single % as comments. This PR restricts comments to be on their own line starting with %%, ensuring inline content is parsed normally.

Resolves #7090

📏 Design Decisions

To fix this, comment parsing is restricted to only match %% when it appears at the beginning of a new line.

This behavior now follows the documentation:

[...] Comments need to be on their own line, and must be prefaced with %% (double percent signs).

Note that the current documentation includes an example such as Moving --> Still %% another comment, which suggests inline comments are supported. This is inconsistent with the stated rule above. This change enforces the documented behavior rather than the example.

Additionally, this aligns state diagrams with the behavior of other diagram types, where inline comments are not supported and are instead parsed as normal elements.

This ensures:

  • Proper separation between comments and valid diagram syntax;
  • Consistent behavior across all lexer states.

📋 Tasks

Make sure you

  • 📖 have read the contribution guidelines
  • 💻 have added necessary unit/e2e tests.
  • 📓 have added documentation. Make sure MERMAID_RELEASE_VERSION is used for all new features.
  • 🦋 If your PR makes a change that should be noted in one or more packages' changelogs, generate a changeset by running pnpm changeset and following the prompts. Changesets that add features should be minor and those that fix bugs should be patch. Please prefix changeset messages with feat:, fix:, or chore:.

Lines starting with %% are now only recognized as comments if they are
on their own line. Inline %% comments or lines starting with a single %
are no longer treated as comments and are parsed as normal states or
transitions.

Previously, the parser could:
- Treat %% inline comments as actual comments, losing line content.
- Treat lines starting with % as comments, discarding valid states.

Adds regression tests for each scenario.

Thanks for tackling this, @RodrigojndSantos — issue #7090 has been open since October 2025, and it's great to see someone bringing state diagram comment parsing in line with the documented behavior. The PR description is thorough, and the before/after screenshots make the intent crystal clear. Let's get this across the finish line!

What's working well

🎉 [praise] The refactoring approach is clean — replacing four separate (and partially overlapping) comment rules with a single rule that enforces the documented invariant ("comments must be on their own line, prefaced with %%") is a solid simplification.

🎉 [praise] Good test design — the tests verify both the positive case (own-line %% comments are skipped) and the negative cases (single % is not a comment, inline %% is not a comment). Testing inside struct blocks too is a nice touch.

🎉 [praise] Changeset is correct — patch bump with fix: prefix, well-described.

Things to address

1. 🔴 [blocking] — Comments after blank lines are not recognized

The new comment rule [\n][ \t]*\%\%(?!\{).* starts with [\n] (a single newline). However, the [\n]+ rule (which returns the NL token) appears earlier in the grammar and will greedily consume all consecutive newlines. This means when a blank line precedes a %% comment, the newlines are already consumed before the comment rule gets a chance to match.

Reproduction scenario:

stateDiagram-v2
A --> B

%% this comment after a blank line becomes a state ID!
C --> D

What happens step by step:

  1. After A --> B, the lexer sees \n\n%%...
  2. The [\n]+ rule matches \n\n (2 chars) — longer than the comment rule's [\n] (which can only start a 1-char newline match before [ \t]* fails on the second \n)
  3. [\n]+ wins, returns NL token
  4. The lexer is now at %% this comment... with no preceding newline
  5. The comment rule requires [\n] prefix — doesn't match
  6. %% falls through to the ID rule [^:\n\s\-\{]+ on line 141, creating a state named %%this

This is a regression — the old rules matched %% comments regardless of preceding blank lines.

Suggested fix: Change [\n] to [\n]+ in the comment rule:

<INITIAL,ID,STATE,struct,LINE>[\n]+[ \t]*\%\%(?!\{).*     /* skip comments */

This way the comment rule can consume multiple newlines (including blank lines) before the %%, and its longer match will beat the [\n]+ NL rule.

(stateDiagram.jison, new rule at line ~65 in the PR)

2. 🟡 [important] — Test coverage gap for blank-line and edge-case scenarios

The current tests don't cover several realistic scenarios that would have caught issue #1 above. It would be great to add tests for:

  • Comment after a blank line — A --> B\n\n%% comment\nC --> D (the regression scenario)
  • Multiple consecutive comment lines — verify they're all skipped
  • Comment as the last line of input — A --> B\n%% trailing comment
  • Comment between transitions — A --> B\n%% comment\nB --> C (verify both transitions are parsed)

(state-style.spec.js)

3. 💡 [suggestion] — Document expected behavior for inline %%

The test asserts that %%not_inline_comment in [*] --> Moving %%not_inline_comment becomes a state. While this is correct per the documented rule, it's a behavior change that might surprise users who were relying on inline comments. Worth adding a brief code comment in the test explaining why this is expected — it serves as documentation for future contributors.

Security

No XSS or injection issues identified. This is a parser-only change that makes comment matching stricter, which is security-positive.

Hey Santos, there are still some lingering issues to address. This wouldn't be as sensitive if it were a new diagram type, but since state diagrams already exist in the wild, changes that affect existing rendering behavior are something we take seriously.

%% comments silently become state names

This is a behavior change I want to flag. Users whose diagrams contain something like Moving --> Still %% comment: this worked before this PR (even if undocumented). After this PR, a phantom state named %%comment appears in the rendered output. That's arguably a worse failure mode than the original bug, because it's silent and visually confusing rather than loud.
These two links illustrate the difference in behavior:

Thank you for the feedback.

In my current implementation, lines starting with %% are only recognized as comments if they are on their own line. Consequently, inline %% comments or lines starting with a single % are no longer treated as comments and are instead parsed as normal states or transitions.

I understand that turning these inline sequences into 'phantom states' is a confusing regression for users who rely on those comments (even if undocumented). That said, I’m unsure about the best path forward and would appreciate your guidance:

1. Change the parser logic to still disallow inline comments but handle them differently? In this case, do you have any suggestions on what that behavior should be?

2. Keep the current behavior (allow inline comments)? In this case, the fix for #7090 would simply ensure that comments must start with %% (whether on their own line or inline with transitions), preventing a single % from being ignored.

What do you think is the best path forward to resolve this?

Note: I have verified that %%{init:...}%% directives are still working correctly with the new parser changes.

Hi @RodrigojndSantos — thanks for laying the options out so clearly, and for the careful thought about the regression. Let's go with option 2.

The deciding factor for me is backwards compatibility. Here's how the two paths compare against the universe of existing state diagrams already in the wild (rendered on GitHub, GitLab, Obsidian, docs sites, etc.):

Existing pattern Option 1 (reject inline %%) Option 2 (allow inline %%)
%% full-line comment works works
Moving --> Still %% inline comment parse error (breaks) works (preserved)
State label containing a single % (the #7090 bug) fixed fixed
%%{init: {...}}%% directive works works (you've already verified)
Silent phantom %%comment state from current PR avoided (loudly) avoided (silently-correct)

Option 1's failure mode is a hard parse error on diagrams that used to render. Even though it's "loud" rather than "silent," from a backwards-compat standpoint that's still a breaking change — anyone whose historical docs contain Moving --> Still %% comment would suddenly see a red error box where they used to see a diagram, and we can't fix their already-published content.

Option 2's only behavior change vs. pre-PR is the #7090 fix itself: a single % stops being treated as a comment start. That's exactly the bug we want to fix, and anyone relying on that was already in broken/undocumented territory.

Concretely, what I'd like to see in the PR

  1. Lexer recognizes %% as a comment start both at the beginning of a line and inline (anywhere on a line, outside of the %%{...}%% directive syntax).
  2. A single % is parsed as normal text / part of an identifier (the state diagram: comments are not on their own line #7090 fix).
  3. Docs update in stateDiagram.md: reconcile the prose with the example. Something like "Comments start with %% and run to the end of the line. They can be on their own line or at the end of a statement."
  4. Unit tests covering:
    • %% full-line comment
    • Moving --> Still %% inline comment → parses as a transition, comment stripped
    • Line containing a single % → parsed as normal syntax, not a comment
    • %%{init: {...}}%% directive still parses (regression test to lock it in)

Thanks again for the care on this one — flagging the phantom-state behavior yourself was exactly the right instinct. Ping me when it's ready and I'll re-review. 🙏

Addresses feedback from the review:
- Updates lexer to allow '%%' comments both at start-of-line
and inline;
- Treats a single '%' as normal text instead of a comment;
- Updates stateDiagram.md documentation to clarify the new
comment syntax;
- Adds unit tests for inline comments and single '%' scenarios.

Hi @knsv,
I’ve updated the lexer to improve comment handling:

  • %% is now consistently recognized as a comment start (both full-line and inline);

  • A single % is treated as normal text (not a comment);

  • Documentation in stateDiagram.md has been aligned with this behavior;

  • Added unit tests covering full-line comments and inline comments scenarios.

⚠️ Note: while testing the %%{init: ...}%% directive, I noticed an issue with how it is tokenized. Previously, it was being consumed by the generic \%%[^\n]* comment rule! After the changes, it now falls through to the <INITIAL,STATE>\{ rule and, even if it doesn’t match there, it eventually ends up in the INVALID state. This behavior appears to have already existed prior to my changes. It may indicate an issue with %%{ handling, though I’m unsure what the intended behavior should be. However, the directive still works as expected in my local environment.

Thanks for your guidance so far!

#### Details
##### Impact

Mermaid v11.14.0 and earlier are vulnerable to a denial-of-service attack when rendering gantt charts, if they use the [`excludes` attribute](https://mermaid.js.org/syntax/gantt.html?#excludes) to exclude all dates.

Example:

```
gantt
  excludes monday,tuesday,wednesday,thursday,friday,saturday,sunday
  DoS :2025-01-01, 1d
```

`mermaid.parse` is unaffected, unless you then call the `ganttDb.getTasks()` (which is called when rendering a diagram).

### Mermaid: Improper sanitization of configuration leads to CSS injection
[CVE-2026-41159](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-41159) / [GHSA-87f9-hvmw-gh4p](GHSA-87f9-hvmw-gh4p)

<details>
<summary>More information</summary>

#### Details
##### Impact

Mermaid's default configuration allows injecting CSS that applies outside of the Mermaid diagram via the `fontFamily`, `themeCSS`, and `altFontFamily` configuration options.

Live demo: [mermaid.live](https://mermaid.live/edit#pako:eNpNjktLxDAUhf9KvFBR6JS-60QQfODKlUvJ5k6TtsEmKTHFGUP-u-mI6Nmdy3fOPR56wwVQSBIvtXSUeAaD0e4ZlZxPDChhcLxFfwiEauOuLq_9Afv30ZpVczpaITS5kGox1qF2gfSeBwYhJAnThAyz-ewntI68vG5-0z3Z7e7IA9OQwmglB-rsKlJQwircLPgNZeAmocTPAi4GXGfHgOkQYwvqN2PUbzJuGSegA84f0a0LRyeeJI4W_xChubCPcbQD2pwbgHo4Aq2aKmvbqq3zoiu7pizqFE6RybN9VFfFY1HWXRVS-Dr_zLObrt7_V_gGGXZlGg)

Example code:

```
%%{init: {"fontFamily": "x;a{b} :not(&){background:green !important} c{d}"}}%%
flowchart LR
    A --> B
```

The injected CSS exploits stylis's `&` (scope reference) handling. `:not(&)` escapes the `#mermaid-xxx` automatic scoping, applying styles to all page elements. Global at-rules (`@font-face`, `@keyframes`, `@counter-style`) are also injectable as stylis hoists them to top level.

This allows page defacement and DOM attribute exfiltration via CSS `:has()` selectors.

##### Patches

- [v11.15.0](https://github.com/mermaid-js/mermaid/releases/tag/mermaid%4011.15.0) (see [64769738d5b59211e1decb471ffbaca8afec51aa](mermaid-js/mermaid@6476973))

##### Workarounds

If you can't upgrade mermaid, you can set the [`secure`](https://mermaid.js.org/config/schema-docs/config.html#secure) config value in the mermaid config to avoid allowing diagrams to modify `fontFamily`, `themeCSS`, `altFontFamily`, and `themeVariables`.

Setting [`"securityLevel": "sandbox"`](https://mermaid.js.org/config/schema-docs/config.html#securitylevel) will also prevent this.

### Mermaid: Improper sanitization of `classDef` in state diagrams leads to HTML injection
[CVE-2026-41149](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-41149) / [GHSA-ghcm-xqfw-q4vr](GHSA-ghcm-xqfw-q4vr)

<details>
<summary>More information</summary>

#### Details
##### Impact

Under the default configuration, Mermaid state diagram's `classDef` allow DOM injection that escapes the SVG, although `<script>` tags are removed, preventing XSS.

##### Proof-of-concept

```
stateDiagram-v2
  classDef xss fill:red</style></svg><style>*{x:x;y:y;overflow:visible!important;contain:none!important;transform:none!important;filter:none!important;clip-path:none!important}</style><div style="x:x;y:y;color:red;font:5em/1 monospace;display:grid;place-items:center;z-index:2147483647;width:100vw;height:100vh;position:fixed;top:0;left:0;background:black">HACKED</div><svg><style>a:b
  [*] --> A:::xss
```

##### Patches

- [v11.15.0](https://github.com/mermaid-js/mermaid/releases/tag/mermaid%4011.15.0) (see [37ff937f1da2e19f882fd1db01235db4d01f4056](mermaid-js/mermaid@37ff937))

##### Workarounds

If you can not update to a patched version, setting [`"securityLevel": "sandbox"`](https://mermaid.js.org/config/schema-docs/config.html#securitylevel) will prevent this, by rendering the mermaid diagram in a sandboxed `<iframe>`.

[CVE-2026-41148](https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2026-41148) / [GHSA-xcj9-5m2h-648r](GHSA-xcj9-5m2h-648r)

<details>
<summary>More information</summary>

#### Details
##### Details

The state diagram and any other diagram type that routes user-controlled style strings through createCssStyles parser for Mermaid v11.14.0 and earlier captures `classDef` values with an unrestricted regex:

```jison
// packages/mermaid/src/diagrams/state/parser/stateDiagram.jison:83
<CLASSDEFID>[^\n]*   { this.popState(); return 'CLASSDEF_STYLEOPTS' }
```

The value passes unsanitized through `addStyleClass()` -> `createCssStyles()` -> `style.innerHTML` (mermaidAPI.ts:418). A `}` in the value closes the generated CSS selector, and everything after becomes a new CSS rule on the page.

[Compare Source](https://github.com/mermaid-js/mermaid/compare/mermaid@11.14.0...mermaid@11.15.0)

##### Minor Changes

- [#&#8203;7174](mermaid-js/mermaid#7174) [`0aca217`](mermaid-js/mermaid@0aca217) Thanks [@&#8203;milesspencer35](https://github.com/milesspencer35)! - feat(sequence): Add support for decimal start and increment values in the `autonumber` directive

- [#&#8203;7512](mermaid-js/mermaid#7512) [`8e17492`](mermaid-js/mermaid@8e17492) Thanks [@&#8203;aruncveli](https://github.com/aruncveli)! - feat(flowchart): add datastore shape

  In Data flow diagrams, a datastore/warehouse/file/database is used to represent data persistence. It is denoted by a rectangle with only top and bottom borders, and can be used in flowcharts with `A@{ shape: datastore, label: "Datastore" }`.

- [#&#8203;6440](mermaid-js/mermaid#6440) [`9ad8dde`](mermaid-js/mermaid@9ad8dde) Thanks [@&#8203;yordis](https://github.com/yordis), [@&#8203;lgazo](https://github.com/lgazo)! - feat: add Event Modeling diagram

- [#&#8203;7707](mermaid-js/mermaid#7707) [`27db774`](mermaid-js/mermaid@27db774) Thanks [@&#8203;txmxthy](https://github.com/txmxthy)! - feat(architecture): expose four fcose layout knobs for `architecture-beta` diagrams (`nodeSeparation`, `idealEdgeLengthMultiplier`, `edgeElasticity`, `numIter`) so authors can tune layout density and spread overlapping siblings without changing diagram source

- [#&#8203;7604](mermaid-js/mermaid#7604) [`bf9502f`](mermaid-js/mermaid@bf9502f) Thanks [@&#8203;M-a-c](https://github.com/M-a-c)! - feat(class): add nested namespace support for class diagrams via dot notation and syntactic nesting

  If you have namespaces in class diagrams that use `.`s already and want to render them without nesting (≤v11.14.0 behaviour), you can use set `class.hierarchicalNamespaces=false` in your mermaid config:

  ```yaml
  config:
    class:
      hierarchicalNamespaces: false
  ```

- [#&#8203;7272](mermaid-js/mermaid#7272) [`88cdd3d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@88cdd3d) Thanks [@&#8203;xinbenlv](https://github.com/xinbenlv)! - feat(sankey): add outlined label style, configurable nodeWidth/nodePadding, and custom node colors

##### Patch Changes

- [#&#8203;7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`e9b0f34`](mermaid-js/mermaid@e9b0f34) Thanks [@&#8203;ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: prevent unbalanced CSS styles in classDefs

- [#&#8203;7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`37ff937`](mermaid-js/mermaid@37ff937) Thanks [@&#8203;ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: create CSS styles using the CSSOM

  This removes some invalid CSS and normalizes some CSS formatting.

- [#&#8203;7508](mermaid-js/mermaid#7508) [`bfe60cc`](mermaid-js/mermaid@bfe60cc) Thanks [@&#8203;biiab](https://github.com/biiab)! - fix(stateDiagram): `end note` now only closes a note when used on a new line

- [#&#8203;7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`faafb5d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@faafb5d) Thanks [@&#8203;ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix(gantt): add iteration limit for `excludes` field

- [#&#8203;7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`65f8be2`](mermaid-js/mermaid@65f8be2) Thanks [@&#8203;ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: disallow some CSS at-rules in custom CSS

- [#&#8203;7726](mermaid-js/mermaid#7726) [`1502f32`](mermaid-js/mermaid@1502f32) Thanks [@&#8203;aloisklink](https://github.com/aloisklink)! - fix(wardley): fix unnecessary sanitization of text

- [#&#8203;7578](mermaid-js/mermaid#7578) [`1f98db8`](mermaid-js/mermaid@1f98db8) Thanks [@&#8203;Gaston202](https://github.com/Gaston202)! - fix(class): self-referential class multiplicity labels no longer rendered multiple times

  Fixes [#&#8203;7560](mermaid-js/mermaid#7560). Resolves an issue where cardinality labels on self-referential class relationships were rendered three times due to edge splitting in the dagre layout. The fix ensures that each sub-edge only carries its relevant label positions.

- [#&#8203;7592](mermaid-js/mermaid#7592) [`2343e38`](mermaid-js/mermaid@2343e38) Thanks [@&#8203;knsv-bot](https://github.com/knsv-bot)! - fix(sequence): add background box behind alt/else section title labels in sequence diagrams

- [#&#8203;7589](mermaid-js/mermaid#7589) [`7fb9509`](mermaid-js/mermaid@7fb9509) Thanks [@&#8203;NYCU-Chung](https://github.com/NYCU-Chung)! - fix(block): prevent column widths from shrinking when mixing different column spans

- [#&#8203;7632](mermaid-js/mermaid#7632) [`3f9e0f1`](mermaid-js/mermaid@3f9e0f1) Thanks [@&#8203;ekiauhce](https://github.com/ekiauhce)! - fix(sequence): correct messageAlign label position for right-to-left arrows in sequence diagrams

- [#&#8203;7642](mermaid-js/mermaid#7642) [`7a8fb85`](mermaid-js/mermaid@7a8fb85) Thanks [@&#8203;tractorjuice](https://github.com/tractorjuice)! - fix(wardley): allow hyphens in unquoted component names

  Multi-word names containing hyphens — e.g. `real-time processing`, `end-user`, `on-call engineer` — now parse without quoting, bringing the grammar in line with the OnlineWardleyMaps (OWM) convention. `A->B` (no-space arrow) still tokenises correctly.

- [#&#8203;7523](mermaid-js/mermaid#7523) [`5144ed4`](mermaid-js/mermaid@5144ed4) Thanks [@&#8203;darshanr0107](https://github.com/darshanr0107)! - fix(block): Arrow blocks in block-beta diagrams not spanning the specified number of columns when using `:n` syntax.

- [#&#8203;7262](mermaid-js/mermaid#7262) [`13d9bfa`](mermaid-js/mermaid@13d9bfa) Thanks [@&#8203;darshanr0107](https://github.com/darshanr0107)! - fix(block): Ensure block diagram hexagon blocks respect column spanning syntax

- [#&#8203;7684](mermaid-js/mermaid#7684) [`e14bb88`](mermaid-js/mermaid@e14bb88) Thanks [@&#8203;aloisklink](https://github.com/aloisklink)! - fix: loosen `uuid` dependency range to allow v14

  Mermaid does not use any of the vulnerable code in CVE-2026-41907,
  but this allows users to silence any `npm audit` alerts on it.

- [#&#8203;7633](mermaid-js/mermaid#7633) [`9217c0d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@9217c0d) Thanks [@&#8203;Felix-Garci](https://github.com/Felix-Garci)! - fix(block): add support for all arrow types in block diagrams

- [#&#8203;7587](mermaid-js/mermaid#7587) [`5e7eb62`](mermaid-js/mermaid@5e7eb62) Thanks [@&#8203;MaddyGuthridge](https://github.com/MaddyGuthridge)! - chore: drop lodash-es in favour of es-toolkit

- [#&#8203;7693](mermaid-js/mermaid#7693) [`afaf306`](mermaid-js/mermaid@afaf306) Thanks [@&#8203;dull-bird](https://github.com/dull-bird)! - fix(quadrant-chart): allow CJK, emoji, Latin-1 accented characters, and other non-ASCII text in unquoted axis/quadrant/point labels.

  Previously the lexer only matched ASCII `[A-Za-z]+` for text tokens, even though the grammar referenced `UNICODE_TEXT`. Bare Chinese, Japanese, Korean, emoji, and accented Latin characters in labels caused a parse error. Added a `[^\x00-\x7F]+` lexer rule to emit `UNICODE_TEXT` and included it in the `alphaNumToken` grammar rule.

  Fixes [#&#8203;7120](mermaid-js/mermaid#7120).

- [#&#8203;7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`4755553`](mermaid-js/mermaid@4755553) Thanks [@&#8203;ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: improve D3 types for mermaidAPI funcs

- [#&#8203;7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`6476973`](mermaid-js/mermaid@6476973) Thanks [@&#8203;ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: handle `&` when namespacing CSS rules

- [#&#8203;7520](mermaid-js/mermaid#7520) [`8c1a0c1`](mermaid-js/mermaid@8c1a0c1) Thanks [@&#8203;RodrigojndSantos](https://github.com/RodrigojndSantos)! - fix(stateDiagram): comments starting with one `%` are no longer treated as comments

  Switch to using two `%%` if you want to write a comment.

- [#&#8203;7526](mermaid-js/mermaid#7526) [`efe218a`](mermaid-js/mermaid@efe218a) - Add Wardley Maps diagram type (beta)

  Adds Wardley Maps as a new diagram type to Mermaid (available as `wardley-beta`). Wardley Maps are visual representations of business strategy that help map value chains and component evolution.

  Features:

  - Component positioning with \[visibility, evolution] coordinates (OWM format)
  - Anchors for users/customers
  - Multiple link types: dependencies, flows, labeled links
  - Evolution arrows and trend indicators
  - Custom evolution stages with optional dual labels
  - Custom stage widths using [@&#8203;boundary](https://github.com/boundary) notation
  - Pipeline components with visibility inheritance
  - Annotations, notes, and visual elements
  - Source strategy markers: build, buy, outsource, market
  - Inertia indicators

### Minor Changes

- [#7174](mermaid-js/mermaid#7174) [`0aca217`](mermaid-js/mermaid@0aca217) Thanks [@milesspencer35](https://github.com/milesspencer35)! - feat(sequence): Add support for decimal start and increment values in the `autonumber` directive

-   [#7512](mermaid-js/mermaid#7512) [`8e17492`](mermaid-js/mermaid@8e17492) Thanks [@aruncveli](https://github.com/aruncveli)!

-   [#6440](mermaid-js/mermaid#6440) [`9ad8dde`](mermaid-js/mermaid@9ad8dde) Thanks [@yordis](https://github.com/yordis), [@lgazo](https://github.com/lgazo)! - feat: add Event Modeling diagram

- [#7707](mermaid-js/mermaid#7707) [`27db774`](mermaid-js/mermaid@27db774) Thanks [@txmxthy](https://github.com/txmxthy)! - feat(architecture): expose four fcose layout knobs for `architecture-beta` diagrams (`nodeSeparation`, `idealEdgeLengthMultiplier`, `edgeElasticity`, `numIter`) so authors can tune layout density and spread overlapping siblings without changing diagram source

- [#7604](mermaid-js/mermaid#7604) [`bf9502f`](mermaid-js/mermaid@bf9502f) Thanks [@M-a-c](https://github.com/M-a-c)!

    ```yaml
    config:
      class:
        hierarchicalNamespaces: false
    ```

-   [#7272](mermaid-js/mermaid#7272) [`88cdd3d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@88cdd3d) Thanks [@xinbenlv](https://github.com/xinbenlv)! - feat(sankey): add outlined label style, configurable nodeWidth/nodePadding, and custom node colors

-   [#7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`65f8be2`](mermaid-js/mermaid@65f8be2) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: disallow some CSS at-rules in custom CSS

-   [#7726](mermaid-js/mermaid#7726) [`1502f32`](mermaid-js/mermaid@1502f32) Thanks [@aloisklink](https://github.com/aloisklink)! - fix(wardley): fix unnecessary sanitization of text

-   [#7578](mermaid-js/mermaid#7578) [`1f98db8`](mermaid-js/mermaid@1f98db8) Thanks [@Gaston202](https://github.com/Gaston202)! - fix(class): self-referential class multiplicity labels no longer rendered multiple times

    Fixes #7560. Resolves an issue where cardinality labels on self-referential class relationships were rendered three times due to edge splitting in the dagre layout. The fix ensures that each sub-edge only carries its relevant label positions.

- [#7592](mermaid-js/mermaid#7592) [`2343e38`](mermaid-js/mermaid@2343e38) Thanks [@knsv-bot](https://github.com/knsv-bot)! - fix(sequence): add background box behind alt/else section title labels in sequence diagrams

-   [#7632](mermaid-js/mermaid#7632) [`3f9e0f1`](mermaid-js/mermaid@3f9e0f1) Thanks [@ekiauhce](https://github.com/ekiauhce)! - fix(sequence): correct messageAlign label position for right-to-left arrows in sequence diagrams

-   [#7642](mermaid-js/mermaid#7642) [`7a8fb85`](mermaid-js/mermaid@7a8fb85) Thanks [@tractorjuice](https://github.com/tractorjuice)!

- [#7523](mermaid-js/mermaid#7523) [`5144ed4`](mermaid-js/mermaid@5144ed4) Thanks [@darshanr0107](https://github.com/darshanr0107)! - fix(block): Arrow blocks in block-beta diagrams not spanning the specified number of columns when using `:n` syntax.

- [#7262](mermaid-js/mermaid#7262) [`13d9bfa`](mermaid-js/mermaid@13d9bfa) Thanks [@darshanr0107](https://github.com/darshanr0107)! - fix(block): Ensure block diagram hexagon blocks respect column spanning syntax

-   [#7684](mermaid-js/mermaid#7684) [`e14bb88`](mermaid-js/mermaid@e14bb88) Thanks [@aloisklink](https://github.com/aloisklink)! - fix: loosen `uuid` dependency range to allow v14

    Mermaid does not use any of the vulnerable code in CVE-2026-41907,
    but this allows users to silence any `npm audit` alerts on it.

- [#7633](mermaid-js/mermaid#7633) [`9217c0d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@9217c0d) Thanks [@Felix-Garci](https://github.com/Felix-Garci)! - fix(block): add support for all arrow types in block diagrams

-   [#7587](mermaid-js/mermaid#7587) [`5e7eb62`](mermaid-js/mermaid@5e7eb62) Thanks [@MaddyGuthridge](https://github.com/MaddyGuthridge)! - chore: drop lodash-es in favour of es-toolkit

-   [#7693](mermaid-js/mermaid#7693) [`afaf306`](mermaid-js/mermaid@afaf306) Thanks [@dull-bird](https://github.com/dull-bird)!

    Fixes #7120.

- [#7520](mermaid-js/mermaid#7520) [`8c1a0c1`](mermaid-js/mermaid@8c1a0c1) Thanks [@RodrigojndSantos](https://github.com/RodrigojndSantos)! - fix(stateDiagram): comments starting with one `%` are no longer treated as comments

    Switch to using two `%%` if you want to write a comment.

Release notes:
### Minor Changes

- [#7174](mermaid-js/mermaid#7174) [`0aca217`](mermaid-js/mermaid@0aca217) Thanks [@milesspencer35](https://github.com/milesspencer35)! - feat(sequence): Add support for decimal start and increment values in the `autonumber` directive

-   [#7512](mermaid-js/mermaid#7512) [`8e17492`](mermaid-js/mermaid@8e17492) Thanks [@aruncveli](https://github.com/aruncveli)!

-   [#6440](mermaid-js/mermaid#6440) [`9ad8dde`](mermaid-js/mermaid@9ad8dde) Thanks [@yordis](https://github.com/yordis), [@lgazo](https://github.com/lgazo)! - feat: add Event Modeling diagram

- [#7707](mermaid-js/mermaid#7707) [`27db774`](mermaid-js/mermaid@27db774) Thanks [@txmxthy](https://github.com/txmxthy)! - feat(architecture): expose four fcose layout knobs for `architecture-beta` diagrams (`nodeSeparation`, `idealEdgeLengthMultiplier`, `edgeElasticity`, `numIter`) so authors can tune layout density and spread overlapping siblings without changing diagram source

- [#7604](mermaid-js/mermaid#7604) [`bf9502f`](mermaid-js/mermaid@bf9502f) Thanks [@M-a-c](https://github.com/M-a-c)!

    ```yaml
    config:
      class:
        hierarchicalNamespaces: false
    ```

-   [#7272](mermaid-js/mermaid#7272) [`88cdd3d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@88cdd3d) Thanks [@xinbenlv](https://github.com/xinbenlv)! - feat(sankey): add outlined label style, configurable nodeWidth/nodePadding, and custom node colors

### Patch Changes

- [#7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`e9b0f34`](mermaid-js/mermaid@e9b0f34) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: prevent unbalanced CSS styles in classDefs

- [#7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`37ff937`](mermaid-js/mermaid@37ff937) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: create CSS styles using the CSSOM

    This removes some invalid CSS and normalizes some CSS formatting.

-   [#7508](mermaid-js/mermaid#7508) [`bfe60cc`](mermaid-js/mermaid@bfe60cc) Thanks [@biiab](https://github.com/biiab)! - fix(stateDiagram): `end note` now only closes a note when used on a new line

-   [#7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`faafb5d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@faafb5d) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix(gantt): add iteration limit for `excludes` field

-   [#7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`65f8be2`](mermaid-js/mermaid@65f8be2) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: disallow some CSS at-rules in custom CSS

-   [#7726](mermaid-js/mermaid#7726) [`1502f32`](mermaid-js/mermaid@1502f32) Thanks [@aloisklink](https://github.com/aloisklink)! - fix(wardley): fix unnecessary sanitization of text

-   [#7578](mermaid-js/mermaid#7578) [`1f98db8`](mermaid-js/mermaid@1f98db8) Thanks [@Gaston202](https://github.com/Gaston202)! - fix(class): self-referential class multiplicity labels no longer rendered multiple times

    Fixes #7560. Resolves an issue where cardinality labels on self-referential class relationships were rendered three times due to edge splitting in the dagre layout. The fix ensures that each sub-edge only carries its relevant label positions.

- [#7592](mermaid-js/mermaid#7592) [`2343e38`](mermaid-js/mermaid@2343e38) Thanks [@knsv-bot](https://github.com/knsv-bot)! - fix(sequence): add background box behind alt/else section title labels in sequence diagrams

- [#7589](mermaid-js/mermaid#7589) [`7fb9509`](mermaid-js/mermaid@7fb9509) Thanks [@NYCU-Chung](https://github.com/NYCU-Chung)! - fix(block): prevent column widths from shrinking when mixing different column spans

-   [#7632](mermaid-js/mermaid#7632) [`3f9e0f1`](mermaid-js/mermaid@3f9e0f1) Thanks [@ekiauhce](https://github.com/ekiauhce)! - fix(sequence): correct messageAlign label position for right-to-left arrows in sequence diagrams

-   [#7642](mermaid-js/mermaid#7642) [`7a8fb85`](mermaid-js/mermaid@7a8fb85) Thanks [@tractorjuice](https://github.com/tractorjuice)!

- [#7523](mermaid-js/mermaid#7523) [`5144ed4`](mermaid-js/mermaid@5144ed4) Thanks [@darshanr0107](https://github.com/darshanr0107)! - fix(block): Arrow blocks in block-beta diagrams not spanning the specified number of columns when using `:n` syntax.

- [#7262](mermaid-js/mermaid#7262) [`13d9bfa`](mermaid-js/mermaid@13d9bfa) Thanks [@darshanr0107](https://github.com/darshanr0107)! - fix(block): Ensure block diagram hexagon blocks respect column spanning syntax

-   [#7684](mermaid-js/mermaid#7684) [`e14bb88`](mermaid-js/mermaid@e14bb88) Thanks [@aloisklink](https://github.com/aloisklink)! - fix: loosen `uuid` dependency range to allow v14

    Mermaid does not use any of the vulnerable code in CVE-2026-41907,
    but this allows users to silence any `npm audit` alerts on it.

- [#7633](mermaid-js/mermaid#7633) [`9217c0d`](mermaid-js/mermaid@9217c0d) Thanks [@Felix-Garci](https://github.com/Felix-Garci)! - fix(block): add support for all arrow types in block diagrams

-   [#7587](mermaid-js/mermaid#7587) [`5e7eb62`](mermaid-js/mermaid@5e7eb62) Thanks [@MaddyGuthridge](https://github.com/MaddyGuthridge)! - chore: drop lodash-es in favour of es-toolkit

-   [#7693](mermaid-js/mermaid#7693) [`afaf306`](mermaid-js/mermaid@afaf306) Thanks [@dull-bird](https://github.com/dull-bird)!

    Fixes #7120.

-   [#7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`4755553`](mermaid-js/mermaid@4755553) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: improve D3 types for mermaidAPI funcs

-   [#7737](mermaid-js/mermaid#7737) [`6476973`](mermaid-js/mermaid@6476973) Thanks [@ashishjain0512](https://github.com/ashishjain0512)! - fix: handle `&` when namespacing CSS rules

-   Updated dependencies \[[`7a8fb85`](mermaid-js/mermaid@7a8fb85), [`675a64c`](mermaid-js/mermaid@675a64c)]:
