Is there any public data? Should the outcome be a validation of the hypothesis, I guess writers/contributors would have heavy work on their plates (mdn/mdn#284 's scale was not trivial) and I hope data will be provided in such a case. |

tl;dr
We're running an experiment starting Friday, April 19, 2024, to rewrite the page title of some pages in the Web APIs section of the English locale, and to measure its impact on search engine performance. Only the
<title>
of those pages is affected. No action from contributors or users is necessary.Details
We have been working closely with an internal SEO expert to identify potential causes of a drop in search engine impressions in April 2023. As it coincides with the Web/API retitle project, and we cannot rule out a causal relationship, we're running an experiment to validate this hypothesis and inform further actions.
We have randomly selected 500 pages out of a list of 4824 Web/API pages in the English locale that were part of the retitle project, and are (partially) reverting the change to their
<title>
(but not to the<h1>
) to see the impact of that change on search engine performance. We will be comparing impressions and clicks of the test group against the control group (the rest of the participating pages).List of affected pages
Most users won't see a difference, but the window/tab title for the pages in the test group will reflect the rewritten title, and search engine results will eventually show that title as well.
