Why

  1. Size. The rulebook makes one measured exception for small, not CPU-bound jobs such as pickers: they may start on GitHub-hosted Ubuntu, but their re-run route is "the fleet, or the smallest Blacksmith size that fits ... never 16 or 32 vCPU". Fix fast-checks admission ignoring broker overflow #34213 let admit follow 8, 16 or 32 vCPU. It now follows Blacksmith 8 vCPU only, the smallest measured size in fast-checks' set, so the lane-gh broker moves a stalled picker at most once.
  2. Admit's own wait. The helper pin that cuts the picker's 180 s poll (ci(fast-checks): decide admission on one census read instead of polling 180 s #34270) moves in its own PR, so this one stays reviewable from its own diff.

Change

  • .github/workflows/fast-checks.yml: admit runs-on is now contains(fromJSON('["blacksmith-8vcpu-ubuntu-2404"]'), inputs.runner) && inputs.runner || 'ubuntu-24.04'. The helper pin is unchanged.
  • tests/test_ci_self_hosted_guard.sh and tests/test_ci_fork_runner_routing.py: the exact selector is updated.
  • tests/test_ci_fast_checks_failover.py:
    • Inputs of 16 and 32 vCPU now resolve to hosted Ubuntu.
    • A selector widened back to 16 or 32 is refused.

The broker half (move a stalled picker once, to 8 vCPU only) is a separate PR in the HQ repo, already merged.

Performance

Metric Before After Delta Harness or run
Picker re-runs after a hosted stall up to 3 (8, 16, 32 vCPU) at most 1 (8 vCPU) -2 test_ci_fast_checks_failover.py
Blacksmith minutes/day not measured at most one 8 vCPU picker per stalled run lower none yet

Testing

  • python3 tests/test_ci_fast_checks_failover.py: 21 pass.
  • python3 tests/test_ci_fork_runner_routing.py: 24 pass.
  • bash tests/test_ci_self_hosted_guard.sh: pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Fast checks now accept the 8-vCPU Blacksmith runner as the only optional Blacksmith runner. Requests for other Blacksmith runner sizes fall back to the standard Ubuntu runner.
    • Updated CI checks to verify that only the 8-vCPU option is accepted and that other runner requests use the standard fallback.

…-look picker

The measured exception for small pickers: the fleet, or the smallest Blacksmith size that fits, is the re-run
route, never 16 or 32 vCPU. Admit's runner input now takes Blacksmith 8 vCPU alone; the guard, routing and failover
tests pin that exact selector and refuse a widened one. The admission helper pin moves from ecc5d60 (#30648) to
159a701 (#34270), whose picker decides on one census read instead of polling 180 s for an idle fleet runner.

Walkthrough

The Fast Checks admission job now preserves only the Blacksmith 8-vCPU runner label. Other runner inputs select Ubuntu 24.04. The routing tests verify the narrowed selector and reject the 16- and 32-vCPU labels.

Changes: Fast Checks admission routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Narrow admission selector and align guards
.github/workflows/fast-checks.yml, tests/test_ci_fast_checks_failover.py, tests/test_ci_fork_runner_routing.py, tests/test_ci_self_hosted_guard.sh
The admission job retains only the Blacksmith 8-vCPU label; other inputs select Ubuntu 24.04. The tests verify the selector and reject the 16- and 32-vCPU labels.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: the fast-checks admission path now accepts re-runs only on Blacksmith 8 vCPU. It is short, specific, and matches the changed workflow and test files. It uses the conventional ci(scope) prefix.

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input

Explanation

PASS: The reviewed diff changes only fast-checks runner selection and related CI guard tests. It introduces no Cloud terminal creation, cmux-tui transport, manual renderer, PTY readiness, input routing, auth, revision, or lease behavior. Therefore no condition in cloud-persistent-session-and-early-input.md applies.

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions workflow and Python/shell tests. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files or production Swift code, so it cannot introduce or worsen Swift 6 actor isolation mistakes.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only one workflow and three Python/shell test files. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files or Swift production code, so the Swift blocking-runtime check is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes only fast-checks workflow runner selection and related CI tests. The changed files contain no browser.* socket commands, socketWorkerMethods, processV2Command, WebKit/AppKit routing, or worker-lane browser changes. The rule therefore does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions workflow and Python/Shell tests. The authoritative production-language scope is not present: no Swift, TypeScript, or JavaScript files changed. Therefore, the cache-substitution failure condition does not apply.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

PASS. The PR changes only GitHub Actions YAML and test files. The review rule excludes workflow YAML, and the test changes add no sleep, timer, polling, or wall-clock synchronization. No covered production runtime script changes are present.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

The PR changes only a GitHub Actions runner selector, comments, and test expectations. It adds no production Swift, TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, or runtime algorithm, and it introduces no collection scans, sorting, filtering, joins, or rescans. The changed tests are test-only code, which the rule explicitly excludes.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

PASS: The reviewed diff changes only one GitHub Actions workflow and three Python/shell test files. It contains no Swift files, Swift declarations, or Swift call sites, so the @concurrent rule is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles

Explanation

The PR changes only .github/workflows/fast-checks.yml runner selection/comments and related CI tests. The diff contains no Package.swift, Package.resolved, .gitignore, or Xcode project package-reference changes, and it does not change SwiftPM dependency resolution. Therefore, none of the SwiftPM lockfile failure conditions apply.

Full details: Cmux Swift Logging

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions workflow and Python/Shell tests. It adds or materially changes no Swift code or logging statements, so the Swift logging failure conditions do not apply.

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

PASS. The diff changes only the internal fast-checks workflow and its tests. It adds or updates CI runner selectors and developer-facing comments; it does not add user-facing errors, alerts, API bodies, command output, or recovery copy. Provider names such as Blacksmith and GitHub appear only in internal CI configuration and diagnostics, which the rule explicitly allows.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

PASS: The PR changes only a CI workflow, CI policy tests, and developer comments. It adds no Swift UI text, app localization catalog changes, web UI/API copy, metadata, markdown, or changelog content. The rule explicitly allows tests, operational documentation not shown to end users, developer-only comments, and literal CI/config tokens.

Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only a GitHub Actions workflow and Python/Shell CI tests. The reviewed diff contains no SwiftUI views or state/layout patterns covered by the rule, such as ObservableObject, @Published, GeometryReader, lazy/list row store references, or render-time state mutation.

Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink

Explanation

The pull request changes only CI workflow and CI test files. The authoritative diff contains no Swift, Xcode, or SwiftUI/AppKit code, so it does not introduce or expand any Swift architectural pattern covered by the check.

Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts

Explanation

PASS: The reviewed diff changes only one GitHub Actions workflow and three CI test files. It contains no Swift changes and no standalone cmux-owned window code, so the auxiliary-window close-shortcut rule does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts

Explanation

The diff changes only .github/workflows/fast-checks.yml and three hand-written CI test files. These are intentional workflow and test updates. No logs, screenshots, recordings, temporary folders, dependency checkouts, caches, build output, package downloads, or broad scratch directories enter source control.

Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only one workflow file and three test harness files. It changes no Swift file under a production Sources/ path, so the specified production test/debug seam rule does not apply.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 3 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: Summary (as Why and Change), Testing, and Changelog. It leads with the problem and the resulting behavior, and it lists the exact test commands and results. The Summary is framed as Why/Change rather than the template's Summary heading. It has no Proof line, though the change is CI-only so a one-line reason is needed. It also has no Observed / Not run subsection, which the template asks for on bug fixes. The Checklist is missing. The Performance table reports unmeasured values (Blacksmith minutes marked as not measured), and the agent session link and generated-by footer are not in the template.

Resolution

Make these edits to the description: (1) Rename or map the Why and Change sections to the template's Summary heading, and state the GitHub-hosted fallback behavior for 16 and 32 vCPU inputs in that section. (2) Add a Proof line that says why no screenshots apply (CI only). (3) Under Testing, separate tests added from tests executed, and state the CI lane that ran them. The fix is not Observed / Not run because this is a CI change, but state what was not verified (the first-run admit timing and Blacksmith minutes). (4) Add the template Changelog line as none, which is already present. (5) Add the Checklist, or state which items do not apply. (6) Drop the Performance table, or keep only verified values. Reviewer BLOCK comment about the pinned helper at 159a701 remains open; the description should state how it was resolved or that it is pending.

Add github_spend.py to the admit sparse checkout.

The pinned scripts/ci/pr_runner_pool.py imports github_spend at module level. The admit checkout omits scripts/ci/github_spend.py, so fast_checks_runner.py fails with ModuleNotFoundError before it writes runner. The checks job then skips because it needs admit.

Add scripts/ci/github_spend.py to the admit job’s sparse-checkout entries
alongside fast_checks_runner.py and pr_runner_pool.py so the module-level import
used by pr_runner_pool.py is available when fast_checks_runner.py runs.

Review material for the helper pin: the admission helper diff ecc5d60..159a701 (scripts/ci/fast_checks_runner.py, scripts/ci/pr_runner_pool.py and tests/test_ci_fast_checks_runner.py, nothing else) is the single commit d411448 on branch lane/fast-checks-helper-pin-review (parent ecc5d60). Every change in it already landed on feat-cmux-next through its own reviewed PR: #30762, #30822, #31896, #33652 and #34270.
