Bound the first transcript read in bytes and make it cancellable - #32652
Opening a chat session on a very large transcript could pin cmux at high CPU and push its memory into many gigabytes. The reported case was a 6.8 GB Codex transcript whose last 2,000 lines held far more data than that limit suggests, and the read couldn't be stopped once it began. Fixes#31300.
Summary
The first read now decodes at most 32 MiB of a transcript's tail, one record at a time, off the tailer's actor. A record over 8 MiB isn't decoded: it keeps its seq and is published as an oversized_record unsupported message. stop() cancels the read during the newline count and between records.
Tailer:seq must stay the absolute line index, so the first read still counts every newline once. The count uses a fixed 64 KiB buffer and a ring of offsets rather than mapping the file and storing every offset. Older lines past the window report hasMore, the same way the line limit already did.
Appends: these now read in 1 MiB chunks under the same record cap, publishing every 32 MiB, so a long backlog or a huge live record can't sit in memory whole.
Late lines: the tailer drains once when its watcher attaches, so a line written during the first read isn't left unseen until the next write.
Rotation: the old cache keeps serving history until the replacement read finishes, then the state swaps in one step.
Artifact index:AgentChatArtifactIndex copied the whole transcript into one String and decoded every line. It now uses the same reader, off its actor, limited to the last 256 MiB or 200,000 lines. A path referenced only before that window leaves the artifact scope, which fails closed. Concurrent requests for the same session, path and working directory share a single build, so a burst of thumbnail requests can't start a scan each; the last waiter to cancel cancels the build.
JSON:TranscriptJSONValue(jsonLine:) uses JSONSerialization instead of probing each value's shape through Decoder, which is the recursive work the report's samples showed. Parity tests compare it against the Decodable path.
History service: if a session ends while its tailer is still reading, history retries with a new tailer instead of returning an empty page.
Limits that remain: nothing in this repo renders the oversized_record message yet, so today a skipped record is simply absent from what people see, and older history reports hasMore. The first read is still linear in file size, though its memory no longer is. A record under 8 MiB still decodes in full. If an oversized record is a tool result, its tool row stays in its running state. The Vault transcript preview (SessionTranscriptLoader) is unchanged: it already streams with its own oversized-line handling and a turn limit, but view cancellation still doesn't reach it.
Testing
Focused command, run on the fleet: cmux-ci run --class light --script scripts/ci/run-swift-testing-suites.sh --ref <sha> --arg Packages/macOS/CmuxMobileHost (and --arg Packages/Shared/CmuxAgentChat for the parity tests).
Failing tests on the base code: 304681b, fleet step 84e83887e5afb26fa384aa23, exit 1. The 2 MiB-per-line transcript loaded all 40 lines (seqs.count <= 16 failed, hasMore was false), and the oversized record produced no row.
Passing on the head: 12a7f8e, CmuxMobileHost step 03988ed2cbc70705591fb609, exit 0, every suite in the package. CmuxAgentChat step 7f00dd09af858f8db97f2b76 passed at 9e97cc3; no later commit touches that package.
App build: fleet job 6ad71df09a55e0fe7882ff0e at 0c864dc, tag 31300-transcript-backfill-bounds, exit 0. It establishes that the app compiles, not how it behaves. Later commits change only CmuxMobileHost (scan budget, maxLines and access levels), which the step above compiles and tests.
Observed / Not run
Observed: the fleet steps above. They cover the window and record limits, a 3 GiB sparse file, cancellation, trailing partial records, batched backlogs, rotation, shared artifact builds, a cancelled waiter, the last waiter cancelling a build, the trailing fragment charged to the byte budget, a zero line limit, and 38+ JSON parity cases against the Decodable path. scripts/verify-local.py passed its selected static checks.
Not run: the tagged build has not been launched, so there is no run against the original 6.8 GB transcript and no measurement of CPU or memory in the app. The AgentChatTranscriptService.history retry has no test and is only read. stopAbandonsInitialLoad can pass with stop() landing before the read starts, so cancelling an in-progress read is covered by the reader's own cancellation tests rather than end to end. No test covers the artifact index's trailing line or its 256 MiB window, or a line written between the first read and the watcher attaching.
The tailer now counts newlines through a fixed buffer, keeps a fixed ring of
offsets, caps the window at 32 MiB and one record at 8 MiB, and decodes one
record at a time off the actor. stop() cancels the read. Appends read in chunks
under the same record cap. The artifact index shares the reader rather than
copying the whole transcript into one String.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "Bound the first transcript read in bytes and make it cancellable" matches a real and central part of the changeset. The raw summary shows the initial tailer read is now bounded by bytes (maxInitialBytes, 32 MiB default), runs off-actor, and can be cancelled through stop(). The title omits other significant changes, such as the artifact index sharing builds, JSON parsing via JSONSerialization, and the history retry. That is expected for a title and does not make it misleading. The title is specific and single-sentence, so it passes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#31300] Requirements: bounded first read, byte and record limits, explicit truncation or continuation, cancellation during reads and between records, no transcript modification, and reduced materialization of large JSON. At the reviewed head, TranscriptTailReader.scan counts newlines in a fixed 64 KiB buffer and keeps a ring of at most maxLines offsets. It checks Task.checkCancellation per chunk. The window stops at maxBytes (32 MiB default). Lines over maxRecordBytes (8 MiB default) keep their absolute index and are reported in oversizedLines. AgentChatTranscriptTailer.readTail decodes lazily, returns an empty string for oversized lines, and checks cancellation before commit. stop() cancels loadTask and watchTask. Appends read in 1 MiB chunks and publish at maxBytes. Older lines past the window set hasMore through headTruncated. The reader opens files read-only. The tailer's initial-load and rotation paths also keep the old cache until the replacement read completes. Residual gap: records under 8 MiB are still decoded in full, so a large non-displayed field inside such a record is materialized. The issue's own proposed patch also decodes full records, and the per-record and per-window caps bound that work. Oversized rows are not rendered by any code in this repo. The tailer test suite and parity tests cover limits, cancellation, pagination, appends, and rotation, as reported. Those reported tests were not re-executed in this review.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
Each changed area traces to [#31300]. TranscriptTailReader, AgentChatTranscriptTailer, and TranscriptLineAssembler implement the bounded read and cancellation. AgentChatArtifactIndex applies the same bounded reader, which removes a second full-transcript scan on cache miss. Its shared build keyed by session, path, and working directory prevents duplicate scans during bursts. TranscriptJSONValue(jsonLine:) moves to JSONSerialization, which the issue's proposal requested. AgentChatTranscriptService.history retries after an abandoned initial load, which covers cancellation when the consumer goes away. Package.swift adds a CmuxAgentChat dependency to CmuxMobileHostTests. The parity and artifact tests use that dependency, so it supports the change. The tests added in this PR support these behaviors. No unrelated product behavior change appears in the reviewed summary or in the inspected files. The CI failure on test_every_owned_workflow_is_watched is attributed to a different tree and is not a code change in this PR. Not verified: the retry in AgentChatTranscriptService.history is unbounded recursion. Termination depends on stop removing the tailer from the registry, which the inspected diff does not show. This does not change the scope verdict.
Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes transcript parsing, tail reading, artifact indexing, package dependencies, and history retry logic. The authoritative diff contains no Cloud terminal creation, cmux-tui transport, manual renderer, PTY readiness, input attachment, or auth/lease/revision code. The cloud persistent-session rule is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation
Explanation
The production changes use actors for mutable state: AgentChatTranscriptTailer and AgentChatArtifactIndex remain actors. The new Sendable value types are actor-independent data containers, and InFlightBuild is mutable only inside the artifact-index actor. The detached tasks capture value/sendable inputs and return sendable results. AgentChatTranscriptService remains @MainActor and accesses the tailer through explicit await calls. No service protocol, UI store, or shared mutable Sendable reference type is introduced or worsened. The affected Swift package targets use Swift 6 mode but do not set a MainActor default.
Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime
Explanation
The production diff adds no semaphore, blocking wait, sleep, delayed dispatch, main-queue sync, or manual lock. await task.result and await startTask?.value suspend on explicit task completion signals. The new loops scan or read until EOF; they do not poll. The test-only waiter loop uses Task.yield(), which is deterministic scaffolding.
Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main
Explanation
PASS. The pull request changes only transcript parsing, tailing, artifact indexing, package dependencies, and related tests. It does not modify browser socket automation, processV2Command, socketWorkerMethods, WebKit/AppKit routing, or browser policy tests. The browser automation rule is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load
Explanation
The diff does not add an expensive synchronous load to the main actor or an interactive handler. AgentChatTranscriptService.history is @MainActor, but it only awaits AgentChatTranscriptTailer.start(); the tailer creates a Task.detached(priority: .utility) for TranscriptTailReader.scan and transcript parsing, then commits the bounded result after the await. The tail reader uses cancellation checks and bounded windows. AgentChatArtifactIndex is an actor and starts its bounded snapshot scan and parsing in a detached utility task. Its socket-facing artifact methods therefore await an off-main cached build. The changed JSON parser is used by existing parser paths; the global-search path already runs reads and parsing on a dedicated utility queue. No changed production call site introduces synchronous transcript or large-JSON parsing on @MainActor, SwiftUI, menu, shortcut, close, or socket handling.
Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps
Explanation
PASS: The pull request changes only Swift files, including the Swift package manifest and Swift tests. The custom check applies to TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, and non-Swift build/runtime scripts. No covered non-Swift delay or polling code was introduced.
Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity
Explanation
The production changes use linear or explicitly bounded algorithms. TranscriptTailReader.scan makes one fixed-buffer pass over the file and stores at most maxLines offsets; record reads are limited by maxBytes and maxRecordBytes. Tail batching and line assembly also process each byte and line once. AgentChatArtifactIndex uses a dictionary for in-flight builds and shares concurrent scans. The new JSON conversion traverses each object or array once. The existing per-update cache.firstIndex lookup remains unchanged from the base and operates on the explicitly capped message cache; the PR does not introduce a new nested collection scan or sorting/filtering path.
Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency
Explanation
The diff uses Swift concurrency for new asynchronous work. Transcript loading and artifact builds use stored and cancellable Task instances. The watcher task is stored and cancelled. The cancellation-handler Task only performs actor cleanup and is tied to the caller-owned operation. The diff adds no DispatchQueue background work, Combine app state, or new completion-handler API.
Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`
Explanation
No Swift concurrency-annotation violation is introduced. The heavy initial tail read is a synchronous helper launched through Task.detached at AgentChatTranscriptTailer.loadTail() (lines 199–210), and artifact indexing launches buildSnapshot through Task.detached in AgentChatArtifactIndex.snapshot() (lines 111–123). The async methods that remain actor-isolated coordinate state and use explicit actor hops from the @MainActor service. The diff adds no invalid @concurrent annotation.
Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles
Explanation
PASS. The only SwiftPM manifest change adds the existing local CmuxAgentChat product to the CmuxMobileHostTests target. CmuxAgentChat/Package.swift has no external dependencies, and no external pin changes or Xcode package-reference changes are present. No cmux-owned package .gitignore change ignores Package.resolved. Therefore, no lockfile diff is required.
Full details: Cmux Swift Logging
Explanation
The reviewed Swift diff adds no print, debugPrint, dump, NSLog, Logger, os_log, or stdout/stderr diagnostics. The only new FileHandle and write calls create transcript fixtures in tests. Existing cmuxDebugLog and debugSessionDump code is unchanged. No logging rule violation is introduced.
Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy
Explanation
Pass. The production diff adds no user-facing error, alert, command output, recovery copy, or API error body containing prohibited implementation details. The new oversized_record value is an internal chat message discriminator, not error text; it is sent in transcript payloads and is not rendered as user-facing copy. Artifact read failures remain mapped by the unchanged mobile artifact handlers to generic sanitized errors. Changed tests and comments contain no user-facing output.
Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization
Explanation
PASS: The production diff adds no user-facing copy, localization keys, catalogs, web messages, metadata, or API response text. The new oversized_record value is an internal protocol discriminator used in ChatUnsupportedPayload, which is an allowed literal token. Added tests and developer comments are also allowed.
Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout
Explanation
The pull request does not change SwiftUI views or SwiftUI state/layout code. The changed Swift files contain no added import SwiftUI, ObservableObject, @Published, @Observable, GeometryReader, lazy/list row, observation-wrapper, body, or render-time state mutation patterns. The changes are transcript parsing, tail reading, artifact indexing, service logic, package configuration, and tests.
Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink
Explanation
No architectural-rethink violation is introduced. The diff uses AgentChatTranscriptTailer and AgentChatArtifactIndex actors as the single owners of lifecycle, cache, and in-flight-build state. Cancellation uses task cancellation, and watcher draining is event-driven without sleeps, polling, locks, notification waits, or delayed dispatch. The new builds state coordinates work inside the existing artifact-index actor rather than creating a second owner. The remaining FileWatcher observer and service start wiring predate this diff.
Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts
Explanation
The PR changes transcript parsing, tail reading, artifact indexing, history service code, package metadata, and tests. The authoritative diff adds no NSWindow, NSPanel, NSWindowController, SwiftUI Window, WindowGroup, or close-shortcut code. It also adds no cmux.* window identifier assignment. The existing scripts/lint_auxiliary_window_close_shortcuts.py therefore has no new assignment to flag.
Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts
Explanation
All nine changed paths are intentional Swift source, test files, or package configuration. The added tests create runtime temporary files but add no checked-in logs, screenshots, caches, build output, dependency checkout, scratch directory, or other source-control artifact. No changed path matches the prohibited artifact directories or patterns.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description is thorough and follows the template closely. It has a Summary that states the problem (high CPU and memory when opening large transcripts), the mechanism (32 MiB tail read, 8 MiB record cap, cancellation in stop()), and the user-visible result. It links issue #31300 with a Fixes reference. The Testing section separates tests run from tests not run, names the commands and CI steps, includes the Observed / Not run subsection required for bug fixes, and states which checks were not run. The Changelog has a single Fixed: line in present tense. The Proof section gives a reason for having no screenshots. The Checklist is filled in. Minor gaps: the template asks for a focused command that fails on base and passes on head, and the description supplies this with step IDs. The description also lists unresolved CI failures. Some items mention internal fleet step IDs that reviewers cannot easily verify, but the structure and required information are present.
Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness
Explanation
The prior failure remains unresolved. AgentChatArtifactIndex.snapshot still sets mayJoinAnyBuild after waiting for an older CacheKey, then joins any later in-flight build at lines 101–108. The returned Snapshot uses that build's original key and is not re-statted after completion. If the transcript changes during the later build, canonicalPath can use stale referencedPaths for authorization. The cold-cache build exists, but stale in-flight results are not rejected. The added tests cover sharing and cancellation, not transcript mutation during a build.
Resolution
Only join an in-flight build when its key matches a freshly obtained authoritative key. After waiting for an older build, retry with a matching-key build or start a new build. If bounded waiting can join another build, re-stat the transcript after completion and discard or rebuild when the result key is stale. Add a regression test that mutates the transcript during a shared build and verifies that the returned artifact scope reflects the newer content.
Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries
Explanation
The PR adds independently testable transcript I/O logic inside the broad CmuxMobileHost target. TranscriptTailReader.swift is a new 277-line Foundation-only implementation of bounded tail scanning, lazy range decoding, and TranscriptLineAssembler; its tests exercise it directly through @testable import CmuxMobileHost. The package manifest only keeps these tests dependent on CmuxMobileHost; the diff adds no small package target. This logic does not depend on AppKit, UI state, Ghostty, or app lifecycle, so it matches the boundary rule. The TranscriptJSONValue change is already inside CmuxAgentChat, and the service change is app-lifecycle composition.
Resolution
Create a small macOS SwiftPM package target, such as CmuxAgentTranscriptIO, for TranscriptTailReader, TranscriptTailLimits, TranscriptTailWindow, TranscriptTailLineSequence, and TranscriptLineAssembler. Expose TranscriptTailReader and its limit/window value API as the first public API, move the reader tests to that package, and make CmuxMobileHost depend on it. Keep AgentChatTranscriptTailer and app-specific AgentChatArtifactIndex composition in CmuxMobileHost.
Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source
Explanation
AgentChatArtifactIndex.swift adds private(set) var startedBuildCount in production Sources/. The only reads are the new TranscriptTailReaderTests.swift assertions, and the counter has no production caller. This is a test-observability accessor added by the PR. The prior waitingRequestCount accessor is now correctly in the test target, but startedBuildCount remains an unresolved seam.
Resolution
Remove startedBuildCount and its increment from Packages/macOS/CmuxMobileHost/Sources/CmuxMobileHost/AgentChat/AgentChatArtifactIndex.swift. Keep build synchronization in TranscriptTailReaderTests.swift; use @testable import and internal production state only when the test must observe existing state. Do not add a production accessor. Follow the reference fix in #6452.

Synchronize the test on read startup before it calls stop().
stopAbandonsInitialLoad schedules start() in an unstructured Task and calls stop() immediately. The scheduled start() may run after stop(). In that ordering, start() returns at guard !stopped in AgentChatTranscriptTailer.swift and no read runs, so the test does not exercise cancellation.
The assertion also does not show interruption. didAbandonInitialLoad is stopped && !initialLoadFinished, and stop() sets stopped. The flag is true whether or not the scan checked cancellation. A scan that ignores cancellation can still pass.
The production cancellation check in TranscriptTailReader.swift (Task.checkCancellation() before each read) is present. This finding concerns test coverage only. A fix needs a way for the test to observe that the first read has started before stop() runs. It also needs an assertion that the read ended before it finished. The current code provides neither.

Add a same-size atomic replacement test for the inode-based reset.
Add a same-size atomic replacement test for the inode-based reset.
replacementResets replaces the transcript with one short record. That record is smaller than the old byte offset, so the reset takes the size < byteOffset branch. The rotated inode check at AgentChatTranscriptTailer.swift:289-291 is not the deciding condition in that test, so removing it does not fail any test in this target.
Add a test that replaces the file atomically with content whose byte length is at least the old byte offset. Use the same setup as replacementResets. Assert didReset, and assert that the first new record has seq 0. For example:
The old and new prefixes have the same length, so the file size equals the old byte offset. The size < byteOffset check cannot fire. Only the inode change from the atomic rename can trigger the reset, so the test fails if the inode comparison regresses.

Blocking, fixed in e67b68e:AgentChatArtifactIndex.snapshot now suspends during a build, so concurrent misses each started a full scan. They now share one build per session, and the last waiter to cancel cancels it. Regression test: concurrentMissesShareOneBuild.
Low, fixed in e67b68e: lines written during the first read stayed unseen until the next write. The tailer now drains once when its watcher attaches.
Low, PR description corrected: nothing in this repo renders the oversized_record message.
Low, partly fixed in 9e97cc3: added the escaped surrogate and lone surrogate parity cases and a batched backlog test. Still untested, and listed under Not run: the service retry, the artifact trailing line and window, and stop() cancelling a read already in progress.
Informational, left as is: near-integer floats can read as .integer on the line parser and .number on the Decodable path. .int and .double return the same values.
A request that had waited could join a build for an older path or directory and
be authorized against its scope. Builds are now shared per session, path and
directory.

Add a test that a changed transcript rebuilds the artifact index.
The existing unchangedTranscriptUsesCache test covers only an unchanged transcript. AgentChatArtifactIndex accepts a cached entry only when its CacheKey matches, and that key includes fileSize and modifiedAt. No test appends to a transcript and checks for a second build. A change that stopped comparing these key fields would still pass the suite.

Wait for both waiters to register on one build before cancelling.
cancelledWaiterLeavesOthers calls cancelled.cancel() right after it creates both tasks. Nothing confirms that either task has registered. Cancellation can therefore run before the shared-build waiter is registered, and the test can still pass. The test asserts only kept.value, so it does not confirm that both waiters shared one running build when one of them cancelled.
Before calling cancel(), wait until both requests have registered on the same still-running build. Use a real registration signal, or a deadline-bounded poll of the index's waiter state. Then assert that the build started once, using the existing startedBuildCount. Waiting for task completion does not establish this precondition.

Assert in the cancellation test that the cancelled build leaves no cache entry.
The test name says nothing is cached, but the only assertion reads waitingRequestCount. That count does not read the cache. A change that stores a snapshot from a build that finishes after cancellation would pass this test.
A follow-up request returns a retained cache entry without starting a build. Without an entry, it starts a build and increments startedBuildCount before it suspends. Cancelling the follow-up request lets the test check that count without waiting for a second full scan of the 64 GiB fixture.

Extend the cancellation test beyond checking index.waitingRequestCount: issue a
follow-up index.snapshot request with the same session and transcript, cancel it
before a full scan completes, and assert index.startedBuildCount shows that a
new build began. Ensure the follow-up runs far enough to distinguish a missing
cache entry from a retained one, so a build that finishes after cancellation
cannot leave an undetected cache entry.
Make the last-waiter test independent of build timing.
lastWaiterCancelsBuild assumes the detached build is still running when request.cancel() executes. waitForRequests(1, on:) only confirms that one waiter has joined. Nothing gates the build, so it can finish first. The request then returns a snapshot, and the #expect(throws: CancellationError.self) check fails. Gate the build in the test, or assert only that the waiter count drops to zero and nothing is cached.

Keeping this test as is. The build scans a 64 GiB sparse file in 64 KiB reads, which takes seconds, while request.cancel() runs right after waitForRequests(1, on:) sees the waiter join. For the build to win, it would have to finish within that gap. Making it fully deterministic would mean adding a build-injection seam to the production actor, which the test-only seam rule discourages (the same rule that moved waitingRequestCount into the test target in this PR).
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@austinywang Understood. The 64 GiB scan makes build completion in that gap unlikely, although it does not guarantee ordering. I accept your decision to keep the test unchanged. The supplied no-test-seam guidance also supports avoiding a production hook solely for this test.

# Test Determinism
Polling is **not** banned, and this distinction is load-bearing: the banned shape is waiting on a CLOCK then asserting (`sleep(0.3); assert`), which fails on correct code under load. ALLOWED is a deadline-bounded poll of a real CONDITION that returns the instant the condition holds and only fails at a generous deadline — the deadline bounds the FAILURE path only, so load can make a pass slower but never turn a pass into a fail. The hierarchy is: (1) await a real signal, (2) inject a virtual clock, (3) deadline-bounded poll of a real predicate as a fallback when you do not own the producer or it emits no event. Where a test must poll because the system exposes no completion signal, that is a flag to ADD a signal (e.g. a wait-until-rendered RPC), not a defect in the test.

# No Test or Debug Seam in Production Source
A test-only or debug-only seam does not belong inline in production source. If a unit test needs to observe internal state, the test target reaches that state through `@testable import` after widening the declaration from `private` to `internal`. Production source should not grow accessors, hooks, or `#if DEBUG` extensions that exist solely to let tests or a debugger peek at otherwise-private state. The compiled-out `#if DEBUG` guard does not make this acceptable: it still adds a test-shaped surface to the shipping file, encodes the test's needs into production code, and invites more of the same.

Add a test for a trailing fragment between maxBytes and maxRecordBytes.
fragmentChargedToBudget uses a 7-byte trailing fragment with maxBytes: 12. No test covers a fragment that is larger than maxBytes and no larger than maxRecordBytes.
scan charges the trailing fragment to the byte budget unless it exceeds maxRecordBytes (TranscriptTailReader.swift:100-101). It does not compare the fragment with maxBytes. A complete line of the same size is excluded when usedBytes + length > maxBytes (TranscriptTailReader.swift:108-112). The AgentChat configurations set maxRecordBytes below maxBytes, so this path is not reached there.
Decide whether the trailing fragment should follow the same maxBytes rule. Then add a test that asserts the chosen behavior.

Trailing fragment not charged to maxBytes: fixed in 1ade115. scan now charges the fragment first unless it exceeds maxRecordBytes.
maxLines: 0 returned the newest line: fixed in 1ade115. The window loop now stops at maxLines.
Test-only waitingRequestCount in production source: fixed in 1ade115. The accessor moved to a test-target extension through @testable import.
Timing of lastWaiterCancelsBuild: kept as is. My reasoning is in the thread reply.
Review findings
Blocking, fixed in dc19936:1ade115 did not compile. The now-internal InFlightBuild held the privateCacheKey, so CacheKey is now internal.
Low, fixed in dc19936 (doc only): a fragment between maxBytes and maxRecordBytes could still go over maxBytes. Production limits (8 MiB per record against 256 or 32 MiB) can't reach this, so the field doc now states the maxRecordBytes <= maxBytes assumption.
The reviewer hand-traced the three new tests; all expectations are correct. No existing test's expectations change.
Tests: cmux-ci step 88c783cf9dfccac1cdd2ae65 passed at dc19936 (scripts/ci/run-swift-testing-suites.sh Packages/macOS/CmuxMobileHost, exit 0). It includes the three new scan tests.

Opening a chat session on a very large transcript could pin cmux at high CPU and push its memory into many gigabytes. The reported case was a 6.8 GB Codex transcript whose last 2,000 lines held far more data than that limit suggests, and the read couldn't be stopped once it began. Fixes #31300.
Summary
The first read now decodes at most 32 MiB of a transcript's tail, one record at a time, off the tailer's actor. A record over 8 MiB isn't decoded: it keeps its
seqand is published as anoversized_recordunsupported message.stop()cancels the read during the newline count and between records.seqmust stay the absolute line index, so the first read still counts every newline once. The count uses a fixed 64 KiB buffer and a ring of offsets rather than mapping the file and storing every offset. Older lines past the window reporthasMore, the same way the line limit already did.AgentChatArtifactIndexcopied the whole transcript into oneStringand decoded every line. It now uses the same reader, off its actor, limited to the last 256 MiB or 200,000 lines. A path referenced only before that window leaves the artifact scope, which fails closed. Concurrent requests for the same session, path and working directory share a single build, so a burst of thumbnail requests can't start a scan each; the last waiter to cancel cancels the build.TranscriptJSONValue(jsonLine:)usesJSONSerializationinstead of probing each value's shape throughDecoder, which is the recursive work the report's samples showed. Parity tests compare it against theDecodablepath.historyretries with a new tailer instead of returning an empty page.Limits that remain: nothing in this repo renders the
oversized_recordmessage yet, so today a skipped record is simply absent from what people see, and older history reportshasMore. The first read is still linear in file size, though its memory no longer is. A record under 8 MiB still decodes in full. If an oversized record is a tool result, its tool row stays in its running state. The Vault transcript preview (SessionTranscriptLoader) is unchanged: it already streams with its own oversized-line handling and a turn limit, but view cancellation still doesn't reach it.Testing
