Fixes #26729

What broke

releases/latest was v0.65.2.2, published with 0 assets. All 12 signed assets sat on a hidden staged draft with the same name (release id 425503700, untagged-7319b3bc503c80f29055). So every Sparkle feed URL an installed app reads 404ed:

  • releases/latest/download/appcast.xml and appcast-<arch>.xml
  • the R2 feeds at files.cmux.com/stable/, which pointed at v0.65.2.2 DMGs that were not there

Every 0.65.2 update check showed "error retrieving update information". The release run was green.

The cause: v0.65.2.2 was tagged from release/v0.65.2.2, a hotfix branch cut before #21140. A tag runs the workflow file at that tag, so the old softprops/action-gh-release publish-by-tag step created a second release and published it empty, as happened with v0.65.2.

Repair (done, no deletion)

I uploaded the draft's 12 assets onto the published release 425504204. Before uploading I checked:

  • Each sha256 matches the draft's GitHub digest.
  • Every enclosure in the three appcasts verifies against the app's SUPublicEDKey (EdDSA), with the declared length.
  • The three DMGs pass stapler validate and spctl.
  • The draft's appcasts are byte-identical to the live R2 feeds.

After the upload all six stable feeds and every DMG they list return 200 with the right size. Nothing was deleted: the tag, the published release and the leftover draft are untouched.

Guard (this PR)

  • scripts/ci/verify_stable_feed.py loads all six default stable feeds (GitHub latest and R2), requires signed enclosures, and requests one byte from every enclosure. It reads that byte and compares the declared length with the full size reported by the server. If no full size is reported, it skips the length comparison. It does not download complete DMGs or cryptographically verify signatures.
  • release.yml runs a separate verify-stable-feed job after publication, adding the release's own tagged feeds. Non-latest backports check only their tagged feeds. Homebrew remains gated on build-sign-notarize.
  • stable-feed-watch.yml checks the default feeds hourly from main, regardless of which branch published them. It does not inventory non-latest backport tags; those tagged feeds are checked only by release workflows that include the guard.
  • Failing feeds retry in rounds within one shared settle window, and passing feeds leave subsequent rounds. A dedicated RetryWindow owns bounded, cancellation-aware waits for both request retries and feed rounds. SIGINT/SIGTERM interrupts backoff and prevents further requests. A feed check already running may finish afterward under its HTTP and workflow timeouts.
  • tests/test_verify_stable_feed.py runs 29 behavioral tests through r2-upload-tests.yml, including an actual HTTP response that closes before sending its advertised byte, malformed enclosure lengths, retry fairness, and deadline handling.

Related: #26611 adds finalize-release.py adopt for an empty published release. The asset repair above was completed during the original investigation; this takeover made no release-asset changes.

Validation

Observed / Not run

Observed on cac86c05486be92ef1ed2da4023851cfaa3331b0, after merging main c8588209b106cd15ede9b7ccc80effb5a5ba189c:

  • python3 tests/test_verify_stable_feed.py: regression commit 8ad136ddd5fcd3169899909829106b5dc0919cc0 fails with 3 assertion failures and 1 conversion error on the pre-fix checker. The same command now passes all 29 tests. The independent review also reran all 29 successfully.
  • python3 scripts/ci/verify_stable_feed.py --tag v0.65.2.2 --attempts 1: all nine live feed checks pass, including their enclosure probes.
  • All three workflow YAML files parse; the release guard's shell passes bash -n; git diff --check passes.
  • python3 scripts/ci/validate_test_execution_registry.py --base-sha origin/main: passes (517 tests; an existing unrelated registration warning remains).
  • Independent correctness review passes the final head and reruns all 29 tests successfully.
  • python3 tests/test_verify_stable_feed.py VerifyStableFeedTests.test_cli_sigterm_cancels_verification: fails on regression commit 6bd4f65 (SIGTERM exits without the cancellation result), then passes after repair commit d4e3b11 and on the final head. Four more tests cover cancellation before and during retry waits, request deadlines, and cancellation of feed rounds.
  • Both additional test-coverage notes in the review summary are addressed: the local HTTP server asserts Range: bytes=0-0, and default/tagged feed expectations use independent literal names for universal, arm64, and x86_64 feeds.

Not run: a release publication workflow, a complete DMG download/signature verification, or an end-to-end Sparkle update from 0.65.2. This changes CI tooling only, so no native build or runtime launch is needed. Localization audit: no product UI, help, or localized resources changed.

Summary by cubic

Guards every stable Sparkle feed so a broken release can never again ship behind a green CI run. When v0.65.2.2 was published with 0 assets, every update check 404ed; this adds scripts/ci/verify_stable_feed.py, which loads each stable feed (GitHub latest/download and R2) the way Sparkle does and verifies every enclosure downloads with its declared length. It runs in a new verify-stable-feed release job and hourly via stable-feed-watch.yml from main, which also covers tags cut from older branches that run their branch's workflow.

  • The check never downloads DMGs; it uses a one-byte range request and fails if the probe body is missing. A 404 is not retried, other errors are, and --settle-seconds retries failing feeds in rounds within a shared window to tolerate GitHub's cached 404 right after an upload.
  • Backport tags that are not latest verify only their own feeds, and 24 unit tests run in r2-upload-tests.yml and the execution registry.

Written for commit 5d6617a. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Stable release feeds and their downloadable enclosures are checked automatically on a schedule and during tagged releases, with an option to run scheduled checks manually.
    • Feed checks validate enclosure links, declared file sizes, and signatures. Temporary failures are retried before an error is reported.
    • Relevant changes also trigger feed-check tests in pull requests.
  • Tests
    • Added automated coverage for feed validation, retries, release-specific checks, enclosure details, and error handling.

v0.65.2.2 was published with 0 assets (the staged draft held all 12),
so every releases/latest/download feed URL 404ed and 0.65.2 installs
showed "error retrieving update information" behind a green release run.

scripts/ci/verify_stable_feed.py fetches each stable feed (GitHub latest
and R2) the way Sparkle does and checks every enclosure downloads with
its declared length. release.yml runs it in a verify-stable-feed job
after publication; stable-feed-watch.yml runs it hourly from main,
because a tag cut from an older branch runs that branch's workflow.

Correctness review (subagent) and resolution, head d399842

The review found nothing blocking. It ran the unit tests, the live check, and the runner and concurrency guards by hand.

  1. Medium: a red check inside build-sign-notarize would hold the Homebrew cask (update-homebrew.yml gates on that job's conclusion), and a rerun would then skip the check. Fixed: the check is now its own verify-stable-feed job (needs: build-sign-notarize). A backport tag that is not latest checks only its own feeds (--tag-only).
  2. Low: urllib turns a redirected HEAD into a GET, which started a full DMG download per check. Fixed: a Range: bytes=0-0 request now reads the total from Content-Range (served_length, tested). Live: 77859900 bytes for the arm64 DMG.
  3. Low: http.client.HTTPException and ValueError escaped as tracebacks, bypassing the retries. Fixed: both now map to FetchError.
  4. Low: the hourly watch could race GitHub's cached 404 right after a publish, and its 5-minute timeout was below the worst case. Fixed: --settle-seconds 180 and timeout-minutes: 15.
  5. Note: the hourly watch only turns red; it does not open an issue. Kept as is: automatic issue creation is out of policy here.
  6. Cosmetic: tests printed real ::error:: annotations. Fixed: main() tests capture stdout.

My own check of the exact head: 18/18 tests pass. verify_stable_feed.py --tag v0.65.2.2 passes all 9 live feeds, and --tag-only passes too. A missing tag exits 1. YAML parses, and the new step passes bash -n.

Walkthrough

Adds a command-line check for stable and release-specific Sparkle feeds. Release and scheduled GitHub Actions workflows run the check. Tests cover feed validation, enclosure checks, retries, and CLI selection.

Changes: Stable feed checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Feed and enclosure verification
scripts/ci/verify_stable_feed.py, tests/test_verify_stable_feed.py, tests/test-execution.toml, .github/workflows/r2-upload-tests.yml
The verifier checks feed XML and enclosure URLs, lengths, signatures, and reported sizes. It retries eligible fetch failures and supports settle-window retries. Tests cover feed validation, enclosure checks, retry behavior, tag selection, and served-length parsing. The test registry and pull-request workflow include the new tests.
Release-tag verification
.github/workflows/release.yml, scripts/ci/verify_stable_feed.py, tests/test_verify_stable_feed.py
The release workflow runs the verifier after build-sign-notarize on tag pushes. It uses --tag-only when the pushed tag is not the highest version-sorted stable release.
Scheduled watch and test wiring
.github/workflows/stable-feed-watch.yml, .github/workflows/r2-upload-tests.yml, tests/test-execution.toml
The scheduled workflow checks stable feeds hourly or by manual dispatch with a 180-second settle period. The pull-request workflow selects relevant changes and runs the verifier tests.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description provides a detailed summary, explains the incident and repair, documents testing and unrun checks, and includes a changelog entry. It omits the template's explicit Proof and Checklist sections, but the relevant CI-only proof and checklist information appears in the validation text, so the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #26729 requires repair of the missing release assets and a recurrence check. The PR reports that the assets were restored. scripts/ci/verify_stable_feed.py checks all six stable feeds, signed enclosures, availability, and declared lengths. release.yml runs tagged-feed checks after publication, and stable-feed-watch.yml checks the default feeds hourly. tests/test_verify_stable_feed.py covers feed failures, enclosure probes, size checks, retries, and tag selection. The reported end-to-end Sparkle update was not run, but that is validation activity and not a missing coding requirement.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed verifier, release job, hourly watch, test workflow, test registry, and verifier tests all support issue #26729. The release job and hourly watch address the empty-release failure and recurrence path. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only release workflows, stable-feed verification, and related tests. The authoritative diff contains no Cloud terminal creation, cmux-tui transport, manual renderer, PTY readiness, input routing, or session/auth lease logic. The cloud-persistent-session rule is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

The pull request changes only GitHub workflows, Python CI code, and test registry/files. It introduces no Swift files or Swift runtime changes, so it does not introduce or expand blocking or timing-based synchronization in production Swift.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only release/feed CI workflows, the stable-feed verifier, and its tests. It does not change browser socket commands, TerminalController.swift, ControlCommandExecutionPolicy.swift, worker routing, WebKit/AppKit hops, or browser policy tests. The browser-automation check is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only GitHub workflows, Python CI code/tests, and the test registry. The reviewed diff contains no Swift files or production Swift changes, so it cannot add or move an expensive synchronous Swift agent-history load.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only GitHub Actions YAML, Python CI code/tests, and TOML. It contains no production Swift, TypeScript, or JavaScript changes, so the cache substitution correctness condition does not apply.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

PASS. The production addition uses linear scans over the feed list and each feed's enclosures. The feed list is bounded to six default URLs plus three fixed tag feed names (scripts/ci/verify_stable_feed.py:42-50,176-189). Settle rounds revisit only those feed targets; they do not rescan a scalable user-owned collection per target. The release workflow performs one version sort over release tags, not a nested batch scan. The added tests are test-only and are exempt.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

The pull request changes only GitHub workflow files, Python CI code, and TOML test configuration. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files or Swift code, so it does not introduce or expand any legacy Swift concurrency pattern.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

The pull request changes only GitHub workflow files, Python CI code, and test configuration. The reviewed diff contains no Swift files or Swift declarations, so it cannot violate the Swift @concurrent annotation rules.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

The pull request changes only GitHub Actions workflows, Python CI code, and Python test/registry files. It introduces no production Swift, SwiftPM package, or app-target changes, so the Swift package boundary rule is not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles

Explanation

The pull request changes only CI workflows, Python CI code, and test registration. It adds no Package.swift, Package.resolved, .gitignore, or Xcode project changes, and the changed content contains no SwiftPM dependency or package-reference changes. The SwiftPM lockfile policy is not violated.

Full details: Cmux Swift Logging

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only workflow YAML, Python CI code, and TOML test registration. The authoritative diff contains no Swift or Objective-C files, so it introduces no production Swift logging covered by the rule.

Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy

Explanation

The diff adds CI workflows, a CI feed-check script, and tests only. Its FAIL, ::error::, feed URL, and fetch-error output is emitted by GitHub Actions for operators, with no concrete path to a cmux app UI, product CLI, or product API response. The changed comments and tests are also developer-facing. The internal CI provider names and diagnostics are allowed by the rule.

Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization

Explanation

The PR changes only CI workflows, a release-feed verification script, and its tests/registry entry. It adds no Swift UI text, app localization/catalog changes, web UI/API/metadata content, or locale-specific message keys. The user-facing phrases appear only in CI comments, script diagnostics, and test fixtures, which are operational/developer-only under the rule.

Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout

Explanation

The pull request changes only GitHub Actions workflows, a Python CI checker, its Python tests, and the test registry. It introduces no Swift or SwiftUI code, so the SwiftUI state-layout rules do not apply.

Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink

Explanation

The pull request changes only GitHub workflows, Python CI code, TOML, and Python tests. The authoritative diff contains no Swift files or Swift UI/lifecycle changes. The Swift architectural rethink criteria are therefore not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts

Explanation

All six changed paths are intentional CI configuration, a hand-written verification script, test registration, or tests. The diff adds no logs, screenshots, recordings, temporary or cache directories, dependency checkouts, build output, copied artifacts, or broad scratch directories. The new files are in the expected workflow, scripts/ci, and tests locations.

Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only GitHub workflows, Python CI code, and TOML test registration. It changes no Swift file under a production Sources/ path, so it cannot introduce a test or debug seam covered by this check.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

The PR introduces two fixed wall-clock waits in the covered runtime script scripts/ci/verify_stable_feed.py: time.sleep(2 * attempt) in with_retries and time.sleep(min(15, remaining)) in the settle loop. These waits coordinate network retries and cached-404 feed readiness, which the rule explicitly forbids. The tests patch the sleeps with a fake clock, but the production code has no cancellation-aware scheduler or readiness event.

Resolution

Remove the fixed sleeps from verify_stable_feed.py. Use a real publication/CDN readiness signal where available, or implement bounded retries through a dedicated cancellation-aware retry/timeout abstraction with explicit cancellation and deadline tests. Do not use time.sleep for retry or feed-readiness coordination.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 27.78% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 18 functions across 2 files. Add a local-server test for the Range probe in http_content_length.

check() replaces http_content_length with Server.head (tests/test_verify_stable_feed.py:77-78). The current tests call only the pure served_length helper (tests/test_verify_stable_feed.py:191-195). No test calls http_content_length or sends the Range: bytes=0-0 request. A change to that header, or to redirect handling in that function, would leave the suite green.

A regression would not fail the release or watch checks, because the function still returns the correct total. The likely consequence is extra transfer on each feed check. This is coverage for behavior that works today.

Add one test. Start a ThreadingHTTPServer(("127.0.0.1", 0), Handler) in a thread. Have the handler record the Range header and return a 206 response with a Content-Range total. Assert that the recorded header is bytes=0-0 and that the function returns the total. tests/test_r2_upload_requests.py:119 already uses this server pattern. The test-determinism guidance does not require this test. It requires that network tests use a local fake or ephemeral server, never a live endpoint.

Pin the three feed names with a literal assertion.

Three tests build their expected names from feed.FEED_NAMES, the same tuple the verifier iterates: test_default_feeds_cover_every_stable_feed_name, test_tag_adds_the_release_feeds, and test_tag_only_checks_just_the_release_feeds. If appcast-x86_64.xml is removed from that tuple, all three still pass. For --tag-only runs, which the release job uses for non-latest tags, the release x86_64 feed is then no longer checked, and no test fails. No other test in the repository pins these names.

- Line 169: Update the feed-checking loop around `check_feed` to perform initial
checks for all feeds, then retry only feeds still failing in rounds while the
shared settle deadline remains; remove feeds from later rounds once they pass
and aggregate final failures after the rounds. Keep zero settle seconds from
triggering retries, and verify the existing job timeout accommodates the initial
checks and any checks already in progress when the deadline expires.

Nitpick comments:
Review comments at @tests/test_verify_stable_feed.py:
- Around line 63-68: Add a local-server test for http_content_length that runs a
ThreadingHTTPServer with a handler returning a 206 response and a Content-Range
total; assert the request uses Range: bytes=0-0 and the function returns that
total. Keep the test isolated from live network endpoints.
- Around line 197-200: Update test_default_feeds_cover_every_stable_feed_name to
assert feed.FEED_NAMES equals the literal tuple of all three stable feed names,
including appcast-x86_64.xml, before iterating over it.
