Fixes#25628. Signed-in macOS users (classic and NEXT both use CmuxAuthRuntime and the vendored Stack SDK) could lose a valid session for reasons unrelated to the session itself:
Token refresh deleted the session on any 400/401. Every launch after an update refreshes the expired access token. The SDK treated every 400/401 from /api/v1/auth/oauth/token as a dead refresh token. Stack sends those same statuses when it rejects the client or the request (INVALID_PUBLISHABLE_CLIENT_KEY, PUBLISHABLE_CLIENT_KEY_REQUIRED_FOR_PROJECT, INVALID_OAUTH_CLIENT_ID_OR_SECRET, schema errors, OAuth invalid_client / invalid_request). Refresh rejection is now classified inside APIClient:
A rejection that names the refresh token (REFRESH_TOKEN_NOT_FOUND_OR_EXPIRED, REFRESH_TOKEN_ERROR, PROVIDER_REJECTED, invalid_grant), or a Stack answer that names no error, still clears the session.
A named client rejection, or a page that isn't Stack's (non-JSON, including non-UTF-8), keeps the session.
A kept rejection starts a cancellation-aware cooldown, which resets when the refresh-token session changes.
A failed Keychain read counted as signed out. macOS passed no isTokenStorageAvailable to the coordinator, so it always reported true. It now passes a probe from FallbackTokenStore / KeychainStackTokenStore.
Only temporary failures (errSecInteractionNotAllowed, errSecNotAvailable, on the current or the legacy account) count as unavailable, and they preserve the cached session.
A permanent failure reads as an empty store. After the file fallback is checked, a session with no usable token still routes to sign-in.
Restore checks availability before and after its token reads. Validation now also checks it before clearing, when its refresh-token re-read comes back empty.
Other suspects ruled out:
The Keychain access group (7WLXT3NR37.com.cmuxterm.app) and service (bundle-derived) are the same across releases.
Stack doesn't rotate refresh tokens (alwaysIssueNewRefreshToken: false), so there's no rotation race.
No path clears tokens on update.
No user report ties a specific status to the symptom. These are the code paths that sign out a live session, not observed causes.
This branch carries the review follow-up first pushed as #25759 (this branch rejects force pushes, so main is merged in rather than rebased). This PR supersedes it.
Testing
Focused command: the Auth and session lifecycle workflow (.github/workflows/auth-refresh-tests.yml). It runs the SDK refresh suites, including RefreshRejectionTests, and the CmuxAuthRuntime coordinator suites matching AuthCoordinator, which include AuthCoordinatorLockedStorageTests. KeychainStackTokenStoreTests runs in macos / swift-package-tests; at the head it passed with every suite in https://github.com/manaflow-ai/cmux/actions/runs/40834658783.
Observed: tagged build 25628-signout-after-update of exact head d28a4101b6efa4be228d0bc7853c5b2936499c01 (fleet job 83f0908b40a5a00e2e05ee82, Linux pool), published to the Tag Opener.
Observed: its direct backend https://cmux-dev-backend-1.tail137216.ts.net:3886/ is running and serves the sign-in page.
Not run: a launch and sign-in across a real in-place Sparkle update. A tagged build is a separate bundle, so it can't reproduce an update of the installed app. Coverage is the behavior tests above.
Changelog
Fixed: cmux no longer signs you out after an update when the sign-in service rejects the app's request rather than your session, or when the Keychain is briefly unreadable
Proof
No UI change; the behavior tests above are the proof.
Improved sign-in reliability when secure token storage is temporarily unavailable. Existing sessions are preserved rather than incorrectly cleared during interrupted credential checks.
Improved handling of token refresh rejections: temporary or unrecognized server responses no longer immediately erase saved credentials, and repeated attempts are spaced out.
Definitive refresh-token failures, such as expired or invalid credentials, still end the session.
…sion
Regression for #25628. Fails on
the base: any 400/401 from the token endpoint deletes the refresh token.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…dable Keychain
The Stack SDK treated every 400/401 from the refresh endpoint as a dead
refresh token and deleted it. Stack answers the same statuses for a
rejected client (publishable key, OAuth client, request shape), which
says nothing about the session. Clear only when the answer names the
refresh token (REFRESH_TOKEN_NOT_FOUND_OR_EXPIRED, PROVIDER_REJECTED,
REFRESH_TOKEN_ERROR, OAuth invalid_grant) or names nothing at all.
On macOS a Keychain read that failed (not just found nothing) returned
nil and launch restore signed the user out. The Mac composition now
passes a Keychain readability probe as isTokenStorageAvailable, so an
unreadable Keychain preserves the cached session.
Fixes#25628

Nothing blocking. Checked against Stack's token route and OAuth model: every dead-session path on the refresh grant ends in REFRESH_TOKEN_NOT_FOUND_OR_EXPIRED, so a dead session is still cleared. The client-rejection codes this PR now treats as transient never mean a dead session. Parsing order (code before error) and the dual header lookup are correct.
Findings and resolution plan (not yet applied):
Medium: the Keychain probe treats every status other than success, not-found or missing-entitlement as unavailable. That includes permanent errors (errSecDecode, errSecParam), which would leave a tokenless signed-in shell. Fix: count only errSecInteractionNotAllowed and errSecNotAvailable as unavailable.
Medium-low: a client rejection that persists now refreshes on every token read with no cooldown. Fix: apply the 429 cooldown to client-rejection 400/401s, and log the known-error code.
Low: a 400/401 whose body isn't JSON (captive portal or proxy HTML) still clears the session. Fix: make an unparseable body transient, keep an empty body or JSON without a code definitive, and add an HTML test.
Test gap: the Keychain tests don't prove a failing probe reaches the coordinator. Fix: inject the probe's status source and add a coordinator test.
Nit: the pre-commit hook added two unrelated entries to tests/test-execution.toml. Fix: drop them.
Nit: the PR should say plainly that no user report ties a specific status or code to the symptom. Both causes are code paths that are possible, not ones observed in a report.

Refresh handling now distinguishes session-ending errors from other request rejections. Token reads report storage availability, and session priming preserves cached sessions when storage is temporarily unavailable.

HTTP 400/401 responses are classified into session-ending errors and request rejections. Request rejections retain the refresh token and use a separate cooldown. Tests cover response classification, cooldown behavior, stale exchanges, and rate-limit observations. The workflow now includes RefreshRejectionTests.

The refresh changes retain two bounded edge cases: replacement sessions can inherit a refresh cooldown, and overlapping SDK store updates can delay clearing a rejected token. These warrant owner awareness and follow-up, but the evidence does not establish a serious failure blocking merge.

Explanation
The description is mostly complete. It includes the required Summary, Testing, Changelog, and Proof sections, with specific behavior changes and test results. It omits the template’s Checklist section.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed whole-PR summary lists changes to shared auth coordination, token stores, macOS auth composition, refresh handling, related tests, and the auth test workflow. These changes support issue #25628. The current base-to-head diff evidence also shows auth-related changes. The unrelated billing, Cloud VM, pricing, CI, and documentation changes cited in the previous assessment are not listed in the current change summary.
Full details: Cmux Cloud Persistent Session And Early Input
Explanation
The changed-file inventory contains only authentication, token-storage, test, and workflow files. It contains no Cloud terminal creation or transport changes, so the custom check's failure conditions do not apply.
Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation
Explanation
The changed production code introduces no actor-isolation failure under the check. FallbackTokenStore, FileStackTokenStore, KeychainStackTokenStore, and the vendored APIClient are actors. AuthCoordinator and MacAuthComposition are explicitly @MainActor. The new AuthStoredTokenRead is an immutable Sendable value, and CmuxAuthRuntime/Package.swift sets Swift 6 language mode without a MainActor default-isolation setting. The changed diff adds no service protocol or shared mutable Sendable reference type. The other added Sendable reference fixture is test code, which the check excludes.
Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime
Explanation
The production refresh cooldown uses the existing cancellation-aware TokenRefreshClock.sleepUntil timer abstraction in APIClient.swift; actor-isolated state and deadline checks own the cooldown. The Task.sleep in sendWithRetry is unchanged. The added NSLock use is confined to test fixtures (RefreshTestClock and RefreshFixtureURLProtocol), which the check allows as test-only scaffolding.
Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main
Explanation
The check is not applicable to this pull request. The reviewed diff changes authentication, token storage, and refresh tests. It does not change browser socket automation, socketWorkerMethods, or the worker browser automation router. The only @MainActor diff match is an authentication session-transition callback.
Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load
Explanation
The diff adds no agent-history loader or interactive-path scan. The new file-store read loads only the cached-or-small credentials.json token snapshot inside FileStackTokenStore’s actor. The new JSONSerialization call parses a refresh-rejection response, not agent history. No changed code calls RestorableAgentSessionIndex.load() or moves a relevant load onto a main-actor or interactive path.
Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness
Explanation
The diff adds a paired token-and-availability read for session restoration, but it does not introduce a cached value in a persistence, history, undo, or snapshot consumer. The new Keychain read uses the store's pre-existing token cache; the old token getters also used that cache. The file reader uses the existing loadIfNeeded() path, which loads from disk on a cold cache. The session restore flow uses the result to decide whether to preserve or validate the session, not to persist a cached snapshot as authoritative state. No explicit cache-substitution failure is introduced.
Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps
Explanation
The reviewed diff changes Swift files and one GitHub Actions workflow file. It does not change a TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, or build/runtime script. The prior failure's scripts/ci/nightly_next_stuck_run.py sleep is outside this PR's diff, so this check's failure condition is not introduced. Prior failure refuted: The authoritative changed-file inventory contains no scripts/ci/nightly_next_stuck_run.py, and its diff is empty. The PR changes only Swift files and one workflow YAML file.
Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity
Explanation
The reviewed diff does not introduce a failure condition from .github/review-bot-rules/algorithmic-complexity.md. The refresh classifier performs a byte scan and JSON parse for one response body, and its known-error Set contains three fixed entries (APIClient.swift:389-430). The token-store changes read a fixed pair of credentials, with at most one legacy Keychain lookup. No nested scans, per-target batch rescans, repeated hot-path sorting/filtering, or in-memory joins were introduced.
Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency
Explanation
The diff adds no legacy async patterns to cmux-owned runtime code. The only new production Task is in APIClient.startRejectedRefreshCooldown; the actor stores it, cancels it when the cooldown clears or resets, and uses a weak actor capture. The other new Task calls are test tasks for controlled concurrent refresh scenarios. The changed runtime code uses async functions and actors, with no new Dispatch queues, Combine state, or internal completion-handler APIs.
Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`
Explanation
The diff adds no nonisolated async declarations and no @concurrent annotations. The coordinator is @MainActor, but its new token-read closures call FallbackTokenStore actor methods; file and Keychain reads then run through their respective storage actors. The SDK refresh work remains inside the APIClient actor. The changed async work therefore has explicit actor boundaries, with no rule violation found.
Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries
Explanation
The diff keeps the new token-read and session-validation logic in the existing CmuxAuthRuntime SwiftPM target. Its manifest defines a library target and a separate test target. The only changed app-target Swift file, Sources/Auth/MacAuthComposition.swift, wires the package's storage probes into AuthCoordinator. The other production changes are vendored Stack SDK code, which the rule allows. No independently testable domain logic was added to the app target.
Full details: Cmux Swiftpm Lockfiles
Explanation
The diff changes only the auth-refresh workflow’s test filter and auth source/tests. It changes no Package.swift, .gitignore, Xcode package references, or Package.resolved file. The workflow adds RefreshRejectionTests to an existing SwiftPM test command; it does not change dependencies or pins. The vendored SDK is third-party, and this diff does not alter its upstream package policy.
Full details: Cmux Swift Logging
Explanation
The Swift diff adds no print, debugPrint, dump, or NSLog calls, and no file-scoped Logger constants. The added token-store diagnostics use the existing AuthDebugLog path, which writes to unified logging and only appends to a file in DEBUG builds. The new Keychain probe message records the Security status and Keychain account identifier, not token values or personal data. Other added coordinator messages are fixed text. No explicit logging-rule failure is introduced.
Full details: Cmux User-Facing Error Privacy
Explanation
The diff does not add user-facing error or recovery copy. APIClient parses upstream error codes into an internal refresh outcome; TokenRefreshCoordinator.complete maps .requestRejected to a token result and does not return the code or response body. The added storage messages go to auth diagnostics, not an app alert, product CLI output, or product API response. The tests and comments may contain provider names and synthetic upstream errors, which the rule allows.
Full details: Cmux Full Internationalization
Explanation
The current PR diff changes auth runtime and SDK code, tests, and one workflow file. It changes no web routes, message catalogs, string catalogs, or Info.plist files. The added Swift strings are comments, logs, or protocol/error identifiers, not user-facing text. The localization failure conditions are not introduced by this diff. Prior failure refuted: The authoritative changed-file inventory contains no web/app/api/vm routes, web/services/vms/routeHelpers.ts, web/messages catalogs, or web/i18n/messages.ts. The prior failure's claims that this PR changes those files are not true of the current reviewed diff.
Full details: Cmux Swiftui State Layout
Explanation
The diff changes auth coordination, token stores, the vendored refresh client, tests, and workflow configuration. It does not add or alter SwiftUI view or layout code. The only application composition change in Sources/Auth/MacAuthComposition.swift adds token-storage closures; it does not change SwiftUI state or layout. No stated .swiftui-state-layout.md failure condition applies.
Full details: Cmux Architecture Rethink
Explanation
The diff preserves clear state ownership. APIClient’s actor owns refresh classification and cooldown state; the monotonic deadline controls retries. KeychainStackTokenStore returns read availability with the token snapshot, and AuthCoordinator uses that result before clearing a session. The added locks and clock synchronization are test-only. The production cooldown sleep implements rejection backoff, not a timing repair for a lifecycle race. No duplicate production classifier or UI lifecycle ownership was introduced. Prior failure refuted: The exact review refs contain no Sources/StackAuth/RefreshRejection.swift at base or head. APIClient.swift has the sole production classifier, and its refresh path calls it. The prior claim of a second, unused production classifier is not true of this reviewed range.
Full details: Cmux Swift Auxiliary Window Close Shortcuts
Explanation
The diff changes authentication coordinators, token stores, SDK refresh handling, and tests. The Swift diff contains no additions or changes to NSWindow, NSPanel, NSWindowController, SwiftUI Window/WindowGroup, window identifiers, or close-shortcut routing. The auxiliary-window check does not apply.
Full details: Cmux Source Artifacts
Explanation
No changed path matches the artifact failure conditions. The 18 changed paths are Swift source or tests and one CI workflow. The vendor/stack-auth-swift-sdk-prerelease directory already existed in the base and is referenced as a local Swift package by the project and auth package; this diff adds or updates SDK code and tests, not a dependency checkout or generated artifact.
Full details: Cmux No Test Or Debug Seam In Production Source
Explanation
The changed production Swift files add no test-named or debug-named members, and no test-build-guarded accessors. The new readTokensForSessionCheck method supports session restore, while MacAuthComposition supplies the token-store read closures on the production path. isDefinitiveReadStatus is exercised by tests, but production Keychain reads and probes also call it to determine storage availability. The diff adds no wrapper that exposes private state solely for tests.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #25628 asks for sessions to persist across updates and relaunches, with silent refresh. The shared SDK changes classify refresh rejections, and the shared coordinator preserves sessions when token storage is temporarily unavailable. The PR summary says classic and NEXT use these shared components. The reviewed changes show the availability probe wired in Sources/Auth/MacAuthComposition.swift, but do not establish whether NEXT passes an equivalent probe. This leaves NEXT coverage unresolved.
Resolution
Evidence from the NEXT auth composition is needed to determine whether it passes token-storage availability to the coordinator and whether that restore path is covered by a focused test.

…ges, clear on permanent Keychain errors
Review follow-up for #25628:
- A 400/401 refresh refused for a reason other than the refresh token
now starts the same cooldown as a 429 instead of retrying on every read.
- A 400/401 whose body is not JSON (a captive portal or proxy page) is
not Stack's verdict and keeps the session.
- Only errSecInteractionNotAllowed and errSecNotAvailable count as an
unreadable Keychain; a permanent read failure still routes to sign-in.

Medium, Keychain errors that never clear up: only errSecInteractionNotAllowed and errSecNotAvailable now count as unreadable (KeychainStackTokenStore.isTemporaryReadFailure). A permanent read failure still routes to sign-in.
Medium-low, refresh retried on every read: a 400/401 rejected for a reason other than the refresh token is now RefreshOutcome.requestRejected and starts the same cooldown as a 429. Covered by rejectedRequestIsNotRetriedDuringCooldown: one exchange across three reads.
Low, non-JSON 400/401: a body that isn't JSON now keeps the session. An empty body or JSON that names no error still clears it. Covered by nonStackPageKeepsTheSession, and unnamedRejectionStillClearsTheSession is unchanged.
Evidence: the PR body now says neither cause was observed in a report.
Not changed:
4. Keychain behavior test: the status table now covers the narrowed set, including the permanent statuses that must not preserve. A coordinator test of "unavailable storage preserves the cached session" already exists (AuthCoordinatorLockedStorageTests.lockedLaunchPreservesCachedSessionAndRevalidatesAfterUnlock). The Mac wiring is a one-line closure in MacAuthComposition. Faking the SecItemCopyMatching status would add a test-only seam to production source, which REVIEW.md rules out.
5. tests/test-execution.toml: the two entries register test files that exist on this base (bb24c4dcf14a9). The repo's pre-commit hook added them, as it does for any unregistered test, so I kept them.
Red/green and the tagged build are in the PR body.
I reviewed and repaired this PR, then rebased the complete change onto current main (e44ff960e2b). The fixup closes the remaining review findings:
Keychain availability now treats missing entitlements as unavailable and probes the configured legacy refresh-token account before declaring an empty current account readable.
Refresh rejection classification is private to APIClient; rejected-request cooldowns use a cancellation-aware timer, and cooldown state resets when the active refresh-token session changes.
The cooldown regression test uses a virtual clock, and the unrelated tests/test-execution.toml entries were removed.
The original branch rejects force updates after the required rebase, so I pushed the rebased head to a same-repository follow-up PR that supersedes this one: #25759. The exact head is e7ae13db63be89cad225a4d5cf0866ae0206222d; scoped static checks pass, and the remote build/hosted package checks are running there.
…llow-up
Brings the branch to main ebc53e71965 and takes the review fixes made on
#25759 (head ed29243), which
was opened because this branch rejects force pushes:
- Refresh rejection classification is private to APIClient; rejected
requests cool down on a cancellation-aware timer that resets when the
refresh-token session changes.
- Keychain availability probes the legacy refresh-token account, and a
permanent Keychain failure or an unnamed rejection ends a dead session.
- A non-UTF-8 proxy page keeps the session; an empty body is decided on
its raw bytes.

…eep the session
Regression for the review thread on #25665:
validation re-reads the refresh token after /users/me fails, and an
empty read caused by a locked Keychain cleared the stored session.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…in locked
After /users/me fails, validation re-reads the refresh token and treated
an empty answer as a dead session, clearing the whole stored session even
when the read failed only because the Keychain had locked. It now asks
the store whether that read could answer before clearing.
Also count every RefreshTestClock sleep on entry, so a sleep that returns
without parking can no longer drop the count to zero while another sleep
is still parked.

Correctness review (subagent) and resolution, head d28a410
Base main ebc53e71965. This head merges current main (plain push, no force). It carries the complete review follow-up from #25759 and fixes that PR's two open threads (replied to and resolved there):
that a dead session can't get stuck: an SDK-deleted token reads as not-found, which is definitive, so it still clears;
the clock balance;
Swift 6.0 compatibility.
Non-blocking, deferred to follow-ups (none is a regression from this PR):
A narrow race. Another caller can consume the read status between validation's re-read and its check, if the Keychain locks and then unlocks within one main-actor hop. The proper fix is a store API that returns a read together with whether it was definitive, which is wider than this PR.
Existing before this PR: token consumers in AuthCoordinator+Tokens.swift check availability only before their reads. Before this PR the Mac always reported true, so this isn't worse.
A Stack session-ending code outside the known set would now be kept with a cooldown. The SDK has no logger to record the code yet; it is carried in RefreshOutcome.requestRejected(code:) for when it gets one.
Nit: setTokens's previous-refresh read goes through FallbackTokenStore's read path.
Nit: lock.withLock in RefreshTestClock.

Scope the token-read verdict to each restore.
FallbackTokenStore shares one read verdict across callers. If accessToken() consumes that verdict between restore’s token reads and its post-read check, the restore can fall back to isReadable() and clear the cached session after transient nil reads. Return the read verdict from the restore’s own reads, or prevent unrelated callers from consuming it.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base ebc53e719665); the change keeps it reachable.

It does not call isReadable() or exercise keychainProbeStatus, which performs the real refresh-token query with kSecReturnData. Add coverage for that probe against the same protected refresh-token item used by the read path. This would detect regressions that reduce the probe to an attributes-only lookup.

⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
A request rejection always uses jittered exponential delay and discards any Retry-After on its 400/401 response. An edge using 401 with Retry-After for temporary rejection could be retried before its stated recovery time.
Clients repeat refused refresh exchanges after roughly 2.5–5 seconds instead of respecting the requested minute of backpressure.
This can occur when: The token endpoint or gateway returns 401 with a client-error code and Retry-After: 60.
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Only three Stack error codes are recognized as token-ending. A different code for an invalid refresh token would become requestRejected, retaining a token that cannot recover.
The client keeps attempting refresh after cooldowns instead of ending the unusable session.
This can occur when: The configured token endpoint returns a token-invalid code such as INVALID_REFRESH_TOKEN in a 400/401 header or JSON body.
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
PROVIDER_REJECTED unconditionally means the refresh token is dead. If the provider also uses this code for an outage or client-configuration rejection, this classification wrongly clears a usable session.
The stored session is cleared instead of renewing when the provider recovers.
This can occur when: A 400/401 refresh response names PROVIDER_REJECTED during a provider-side problem that later resolves.
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Cooldown reset depends on mutations passing through this APIClient's setTokens or clearTokens. A coordinator or another APIClient writing the shared token store may replace the session without resetting this client's active rejection cooldown.
The new session's refresh is suppressed by the previous session's cooldown.
This can occur when: Another token-store writer replaces an expired session after this client has entered rejection cooldown, then this client is asked to refresh the replacement.
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Compare-and-clear resets cooldown only when its later read returns nil. If it clears the old token and a separate writer installs a new one before that read, this APIClient can retain cooldown state belonging to the cleared session.
B's next refresh through this APIClient can be suppressed by A's cooldown.
This can occur when: A compare-and-clear of session A succeeds while another client installs session B between the compare-and-set and getStoredRefreshToken().

Regression for #25628. Fails on
the base: any 400/401 from the token endpoint deletes the refresh token.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…dable Keychain
The Stack SDK treated every 400/401 from the refresh endpoint as a dead
refresh token and deleted it. Stack answers the same statuses for a
rejected client (publishable key, OAuth client, request shape), which
says nothing about the session. Clear only when the answer names the
refresh token (REFRESH_TOKEN_NOT_FOUND_OR_EXPIRED, PROVIDER_REJECTED,
REFRESH_TOKEN_ERROR, OAuth invalid_grant) or names nothing at all.
On macOS a Keychain read that failed (not just found nothing) returned
nil and launch restore signed the user out. The Mac composition now
passes a Keychain readability probe as isTokenStorageAvailable, so an
unreadable Keychain preserves the cached session.

Add a run deadline so the idle-pause cron finishes before its 300-second limit.
The cron route allows 300 seconds. Each timed-out probe can hold a concurrency slot for up to 25 seconds, and the run processes up to 500 machines. A run with many slow probes can therefore reach the platform limit. The platform then ends the function before the run-total write and the saturation warning. Stop starting new checks after a deadline, and reserve time for in-flight pauses, so the summary is written before the limit.

Align the unreadable-directory fallback with its documented contract.
When workflow derivation returns None, is_signing_variable() recognizes only LINUX_RUNNER, CI_TRUSTED_RUNNER, and MACOS_RUNNER_*. The module docstring states that every runner variable counts. This mismatch leaves the fail-closed behavior incomplete.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base ebc53e719665); the change keeps it reachable.

The cloudDb stub in web/tests/starter-runtime.test.ts returns rows from any .where(...) call. The predicate is never evaluated. If the "go" entry is removed from the candidate filter in web/services/vms/goRuntimeLimits.ts, both tests still pass. No other test in web/tests runs enforceGoRuntimeLimits against a real database. Add a database-backed test that seeds a running Go VM and asserts that the minute job selects it.

Builder cleanup queries VMs by snapshotId: base before applying a local predicate that also accepts sourceSnapshotSlugAtCreate === base; a VM represented only by that source slug may never reach the predicate.
A cancelled promotion can leave its untagged builder running despite the matching name and creation time.

testStreamRetainsAccountWideSlotOutsideVisibleScope applies an empty stream, so it does not test a visible insert. applyVMChanges also undercounts that path: with one off-scope slot and one new running VM, compactCount becomes 1/1 instead of 2/1. Correct the Plus disk limit in the Traditional Chinese resize text.
The new resizeDesc string says Plus is limited to 16 GB. The server default allows Plus disks up to 128 GB, and the English source says 128 GB. Plus users can read a lower limit than the one they can resize to. Change the Plus value to 128 GB.

Do not let a probe started entry clear a newer queue stall.
label_evidence() removes every probe started label from the stalled set, but the health record carries only checked, not the time of the start. A start that predates the stall can therefore hide it for up to HEALTH_MAX_AGE. Until a later probe pass marks the label stalled, reconcile() keeps the stalled label as the pool member, and new jobs read it.

CI fast guards: FAIL 10.1s workflow-guard-tests / ci: Validate that the persistent-pool rescue watches every owned-pool workflow
Not re-run automatically: CI fast guards is not a machine failure.
Written by scripts/ci/classify_failures.py (ci-failure-attribution.yml); signatures are its SIGNATURES table. A machine verdict is the runner's fault, not this PR's; yours means the failing file is one this PR changes, also red on main that main's latest full suite fails the same way, seen on other PRs that it failed on another pull request's run lately.
Fix: the assertion above names what the guard expects; change the tree to match it.
Reproduce in seconds, no build: scripts/ci/guards-local.sh --step 'Validate that the persistent-pool rescue watches every owned-pool workflow'
Agents: python3 scripts/ci/guard_attribution.py fix applies the mechanical fixes locally.
…resh cooldown streaks
Token reads now return their availability together (AuthStoredTokenRead), so a
concurrent caller can no longer consume a temporary Keychain failure before
session restore decides whether to clear. A stale refresh outcome from another
token store keeps a successful token but no longer changes cooldowns or clears
credentials; 429 and rejection streaks reset each other and recovery is still
reported after a rate limit.

…unused classifier
Review follow-up: a refresh for the new token that started during the store
write recorded the old epoch and was treated as stale. The top-level
RefreshRejection was unused and disagreed with APIClient's classifier.

Correctness review (subagent) and resolution, head 47a69ef
Base main1f9b36b. This head merges current main (plain push, no force).
Earlier commit 7130d75: committed the follow-up the failing auth-refresh-tests needed.
lateRefreshCannotChangeAnotherStoresCooldown: when another token store changes the cooldown epoch, a stale refresh outcome still returns a successful token. It no longer changes cooldowns or clears credentials. This also covers CodeRabbit's APIClient.swift:555 finding.
alternatingRejectionsResetBackoffStreaksAndStillReportRecovery: a 429 and a rejected request now reset each other's streak. A separate flag still reports recovery after a 429. This also covers CodeRabbit's APIClient.swift:575 finding.
The rejected-request cooldown also expires by its deadline when the timer task lags.
Token reads now return their availability in the same value (AuthStoredTokenRead). Another caller can no longer use up a temporary Keychain failure before session restore decides whether to clear.
Review verdict: no blocking findings. Every intent and both new SDK tests hold when traced through the code. Low findings:
The top-level RefreshRejection.swift was unused and classified one case differently from APIClient's nested classifier. Fixed in 47a69ef: file removed.
setTokens bumped the cooldown epoch after the store write, so a refresh for the new token that started during the write was treated as stale. Fixed in 47a69ef: the epoch now resets before the write.
On macOS with no cached user and a temporarily locked Keychain at launch, the user stays signed out until the next restart. Not changed: this is existing behavior, not a regression. The old code also cleared auth state in this case.
…the atomic-read test closure
A refresh for the new token that started during the store write recorded the
old epoch and was treated as stale. The ternary closure in the locked-storage
test crashed the type checker ("failed to produce diagnostic").

Check storage availability before DEBUG auto-login.
In DEBUG builds, a token read that is unavailable and returns no tokens still starts auto-login. The check uses only the token fields, not isAvailable. A failed sign-in then clears the stored session without a token comparison. Move the storedTokens.isAvailable guard above the DEBUG auto-login branch. This path predates the change, so the guard move is a follow-up.

Pass a token reader to the iOS AuthCoordinator.
The iOS composition omits readStoredTokens. Its token reads can return nil during a Keychain failure while isTokenStorageAvailable still reports true. checkExistingSessionBody then calls clearAuthState, which drops the signed-in state and the cached session flag, although the tokens remain stored. Supply a readStoredTokens closure that reads the same token store the client uses.

Return an unavailable Keychain read before promoting the file snapshot.
When the Keychain read is empty and unavailable, readStoredTokens() still promotes a nonempty file snapshot. It also sets keychainWorks = false for the store lifetime. A file left stale by a failed clear can then replace the current Keychain session after a temporary lock.

Report failed credential reads as unavailable.
FileStackTokenStore.readStoredTokens() always returns isAvailable: true. When readFromDisk() fails to read or decode credentials.json, it returns an empty Snapshot, and loadIfNeeded() caches that snapshot. When the keychain also returns no tokens, FallbackTokenStore.readStoredTokens() returns the keychain's available result. Launch restore then clears the in-memory session for that launch. The empty snapshot stays cached until the next write. The credentials file is not deleted, so a later launch that reads the file successfully can restore the session.
Only a missing file should read as an empty, available store. A read or decode failure should report unavailable and should not be cached. The fallback path must also keep that status.

Keep a definitive refresh rejection when a stale exchange finishes.
The epoch guard in refreshRespectingRateLimit turns a stale .definitivelyRejected result into .transientFailure. A token write through tokenStoreOverride for another store advances the shared epoch during an in-flight exchange. The coordinator then keeps the rejected refresh token. The next refresh re-sends it, and that refresh clears it only if no further epoch change occurs.
Passing a stale definitive rejection through unchanged keeps the cooldown protection, because the switch is skipped. The coordinator's compare-and-set still prevents clearing replacement credentials.

Scope the rejected-refresh cooldown to the refresh token that was rejected.
The rejected-refresh gate in refreshRespectingRateLimit returns a transient failure without comparing the refresh token. resetRefreshCooldownState() runs only from the APIClient token-write methods, so a direct store write does not clear the cooldown. The sign-in callback seeds tokens through tokenStore.seed(...) at HostBrowserSignInFlow.swift:583, which calls the store's setTokens directly. A replacement session that starts during an active rejection cooldown can therefore have its refresh suppressed until the cooldown ends. The first rejection waits 2.5 to 5 seconds. Repeated rejections extend the wait up to 300 seconds.
Record the rejected refresh token when the cooldown starts. Bypass the cooldown when a different refresh token is presented.

"Cloud Machines header count" (3 issues): the test and the source on main disagree at 1f9b36b0d508e9a4478ac4a17eecf92d8bb3ecbc, the base this PR merged.
cmuxTests/CloudMachinesHeaderCountTests.swift:18 expects "Machines on your plan. Sleeping machines cost nothing.".
This fails on main itself. This PR touches neither file.
SidebarNewLocalWorkspaceTests.commandNWithoutAWindowKeepsTheInitialWorkspace (tabs.count 2, expected 1): sidebar and workspace code. This PR doesn't touch it. These suites only run because the PR changes Sources/Auth/MacAuthComposition.swift, which widens the "changed suites" selection.
Every other suite in the job passed (518 tests, 4 issues, all listed above). I'm not patching around these here.
Ready for review. Head 3f31aeb08fc3168fcfb7f3242c2b12df412eb785 (merged main at 1f9b36b0), mergeable.
Changes on top of fae8c309
Token reads now return the storage availability together with the tokens, from one read (AuthStoredTokenRead; Keychain, file and fallback stores). Session restore and validation keep the cached session when the Keychain is locked or busy, instead of signing the user out (macOS: signed out after app updates far more often than Chrome sessions #25628).
APIClient: the 429 and rejected cooldown streaks are tracked separately, and each resets the other. A late refresh can no longer change another store's cooldown. This fixes the 2 failing auth-refresh-tests cases.
setTokens resets the cooldown before writing to the store. Correction to my earlier review comment: this epoch fix landed in 3f31aeb0, not 47a69ef4. 47a69ef4 only removed the unused RefreshRejection.swift.
AuthCoordinatorLockedStorageTests: replaced a closure that crashed the type checker.
Checks
Required checks: all green. auth-refresh-tests: pass. 60 other checks pass.
app-host unit tests (changed suites), plus the macOS status and ci-status checks that roll it up: base red, with evidence in Fixes #25628 #25665 (comment).
mobile-core-package and ios-simulator-build: still queued for Blacksmith macOS capacity since 05:30Z, with no runner assigned.
Fleet (cmux-ci, exact head):
CmuxAuthRuntime: every suite this PR touches passes. KeychainStackTokenStoreTests.clearingLegacyTokensPreservesSameAccountInAnotherService, an existing test from main, fails because the headless runner's Keychain write returns -60008.
stack-auth SDK: only the live-server Authentication Tests fail ("Could not connect to the server").
Review: a subagent review found no blocking findings. Its findings and how each was resolved are in #25665 (comment).
#26732 changed the generic help to
"Running and paused machines count toward your plan's machine limit." but
left CloudMachinesHeaderCountTests on the old copy, so the app-host suite
was red on main.

Summary
Fixes #25628. Signed-in macOS users (classic and NEXT both use
CmuxAuthRuntimeand the vendored Stack SDK) could lose a valid session for reasons unrelated to the session itself:/api/v1/auth/oauth/tokenas a dead refresh token. Stack sends those same statuses when it rejects the client or the request (INVALID_PUBLISHABLE_CLIENT_KEY,PUBLISHABLE_CLIENT_KEY_REQUIRED_FOR_PROJECT,INVALID_OAUTH_CLIENT_ID_OR_SECRET, schema errors, OAuthinvalid_client/invalid_request). Refresh rejection is now classified insideAPIClient:REFRESH_TOKEN_NOT_FOUND_OR_EXPIRED,REFRESH_TOKEN_ERROR,PROVIDER_REJECTED,invalid_grant), or a Stack answer that names no error, still clears the session.isTokenStorageAvailableto the coordinator, so it always reportedtrue. It now passes a probe fromFallbackTokenStore/KeychainStackTokenStore.errSecInteractionNotAllowed,errSecNotAvailable, on the current or the legacy account) count as unavailable, and they preserve the cached session.Other suspects ruled out:
