Restore from session history instead of starting empty when snapshots are unreadable - #18857
Conversation
Red: an unreadable primary and -previous make startup restore nothing even when session-history holds a usable snapshot, and the next autosave replaces the unreadable primary without keeping its bytes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

When the primary snapshot exists but neither it nor -previous can be restored, startup now falls back to the newest restorable session-history archive. Unusable primary and backup bytes are copied to an .unusable side file before any later save can replace them. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Assert that the fresh snapshot replaced the primary.
save writes the encoded data to the primary, but the test checks only its Boolean result. A regression that returns true without replacing the corrupt primary would leave that primary as the single survivor and still pass. Assert that the primary loads the fresh snapshot.

Make timestamped unusable-copy creation collision-safe.
Thread.sleep(forTimeInterval: 0.005) follows each synchronous preservation call. It paces distinct test scenarios; it does not wait for asynchronous readiness, so it does not violate the fixed-sleep determinism rule.
However, preserveUnusableSnapshot uses rounded Date() milliseconds and writes with .withoutOverwriting. If two different payloads receive the same millisecond value, the write returns nil, and the later unusable bytes are not preserved. Choose an unused timestamped URL or retry with a collision-safe suffix in the repository. Clock injection alone would stabilize the test but would not fix this production collision.

History restore keeps stale overwrite baseline
Medium Severity
History recovery only raises sessionSnapshotOverwriteGuard when recovered.richness is already larger than the current baseline. archiveSessionSnapshotAndInstallOverwriteGuard can set that baseline from a -previous snapshot that later fails crash-diagnostic pruning, so this path still restores an older archive while keeping the richer discarded baseline. A quit or crash before maturity then holds the save, and the recovered layout never replaces the unusable primary.

Summary
If the saved session snapshot exists but can't be restored, cmux falls back to the
-previouscopy. If that copy is also unusable or missing, cmux starts with no workspaces, even thoughsession-history/still holds archived launches it could restore. The next autosave then overwrites the unreadable primary without keeping a copy, so those bytes are gone for good. After this change:
