Drop a sidebar workspace onto a pane to merge its tabs - #18837
Conversation
Adds the merge capability plumbing (sidebar row lease, resolver case, pane drop container hooks) with mergeWorkspace stubbed, plus tests that fail until the merge moves tabs and the sidebar keeps reading the row as a reorder. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Dropping a workspace row on a pane's center moves every tab to the drop index; an edge splits the pane with the first tab and the rest follow. The emptied workspace closes like it does after its last tab is dragged out. Self-merges, remote tmux mirrors and cross-machine tabs are quiet rejections. Sidebar destinations keep treating the drag as a reorder. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

The added tests either call
mergeWorkspacedirectly or test source decoding. They do not pass a registered workspace-row drag throughPaneTransferDropRouterandPaneDropContainer. A regression in the resolver-to-handler wiring could therefore make pane drops fail while these tests pass. Add a dispatch-level test that asserts the tabs move and the source workspace closes.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

* test: a sidebar row drag over the Bonsplit overlay still reorders Fails on main: since #18837 the row drag also carries the Bonsplit pane-merge type, so AppKit routes it to the frontmost Bonsplit overlay, which rejects it, and the reorder view beneath never sees the drag. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * Fix sidebar workspace reorder by drag (regressed in #18837) #18837 exported the Bonsplit pane-merge capability on every sidebar row drag. AppKit routes a drag to the frontmost view registered for one of its types, regardless of hitTest, so the full-size Bonsplit tab overlay above the reorder view took every row drag and rejected it. The overlay now hands sidebar reorder drags to the reorder view beneath it; dropping a row on a pane still merges its tabs. Summary
Dragging a workspace row from the sidebar onto a pane now moves that workspace's tabs into the pane and closes the emptied workspace. This is the classic-app version of cmux-next's #17542.

TabDragTransferRegistrylease that synthetic tab sources use. Panes therefore show their existing drop zones and preview, and resolve the lease as a newPaneTransferSourceResolver.Source.workspaceMerge. Sidebar destinations (reorder, move into a group, tab-to-workspace) keep reading the row's reorder payload:BonsplitTabDragPayload.transferignores a pasteboard that carries one.Known limitation: over a pane's own tab bar, Bonsplit's insertion indicator can still show for a refused self-drop, and the drop springs back.

This change doesn't reach the split path. A split is refused only when splits are disabled, the workspace is retired or a remote tmux mirror, or the window is too narrow. Run on this head after the window-related suites that preceded it, the test passes (run 37970957776). On main it passes after the six suites that preceded it in this lane (run 37968818561). It looks order-dependent (saved window state, as in #15953), but that isn't proven against main with this lane's full suite list. Changes workspace/tab lifecycle and drag routing across sidebar and panes, but builds on existing
moveSurfacewith explicit guards and focused tests.Overview
Adds workspace merge via drag-and-drop: dropping a sidebar workspace row onto another workspace’s pane moves all of that workspace’s tabs into the target (in sidebar order) and closes the emptied source, reusing the existing cross-workspace
moveSurfacepath.Pane behavior: a center drop inserts every tab at the drop index; an edge drop splits the pane with the first tab and stacks the rest in the new pane. Refusals (self-merge, remote tmux mirrors, tabs the target won’t
acceptsSurface) stay quiet with no effective drop.Drag plumbing: workspace rows now export a second pane-merge capability (
WorkspaceMergeDragRegistry+ syntheticTabDragTransfer) alongside the existing sidebar reorder payload. Panes resolvePaneTransferSourceResolver.Source.workspaceMergeand callAppDelegate.mergeWorkspace; sidebar destinations still read reorder only becauseBonsplitTabDragPayload.transferignores pasteboards that carry sidebar reorder types. The Dock declines merge drags without surfacing ownership errors.WorkspaceMergeDropTestscovers single/multi-tab merges, edge splits, self-merge refusal, resolver wiring, and the reorder-vs-merge pasteboard split.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit be81cb5.
