Summary

Custom sidebar rows can be tappable but still look like plain text because the interpreted runtime had no cursor modifier. Add .cursor("pointer") for tappable rows and apply it in the native renderer without a JavaScript hover round trip.

The modifier owns its cursor push/pop lifecycle and cleans up on view disappearance, so a hot-reloaded or removed row cannot leave the global cursor stack stale. The existing documented .frame and .fixedSize chainables are already shipped; this PR adds the missing cursor behavior and documents it.

Fixes #16211

Testing

  • Added runtime coverage that .cursor("pointer") reaches the retained scene node.
  • node --check Packages/macOS/CmuxSwiftRenderUI/Sources/CmuxSwiftRenderUI/Resources/SidebarRuntime.js passed.
  • Standalone Node runtime harness confirmed the cursor update op is emitted.
  • swiftc -parse passed for the changed renderer and test source.
  • python3 scripts/verify-local.py --affected mf/main — 2/2 affected checks passed.
  • git diff --check passed.
  • Native compilation and app tests were not run on the MacBook Air.

Changelog

Added .cursor("pointer") to interpreted custom sidebars.

Demo Video

Not applicable: this is a small native cursor affordance covered by runtime tests; native UI recording requires the managed macOS build workflow.

Checklist

  • Behavior changes have added or updated tests.
  • Documentation now lists the supported chainable.
  • Localization was audited; no new user-facing strings were added.
  • Native compilation was not run on the MacBook Air; portable checks are listed above.

Summary by cubic

Custom sidebar rows that are tappable now show a pointer cursor on hover instead of looking like plain text. Adds a .cursor("pointer") chainable to the interpreted runtime and applies it in the native renderer without routing hover through JavaScript.

The SceneCursor modifier owns its NSCursor push/pop pair, so a hot-reloaded or removed row can't leave the global cursor stack stale. Adds runtime test coverage and documents the new chainable in the custom sidebars docs.

Written for commit aea03ad. Summary will update on new commits.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The sidebar runtime now accepts cursor as a chainable node property. SceneNodeView pushes a pointing-hand cursor for nodes with the pointer value during hover and removes it when hover ends or the node disappears.

The runtime accepts cursor as a chainable property. SceneNodeView applies the pointing-hand cursor on hover for nodes whose cursor value is pointer, and removes it on hover exit or disappearance. A test checks that the property reaches the root node. The documentation lists .cursor("pointer").

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to aea03

A live sidebar update can leave the pointing-hand cursor active until the affected view disappears. This is a localized, recoverable feedback defect; merging is reasonable with owner awareness and a targeted cleanup follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to aea03

The cursor option has a narrowly constrained visual effect. However, changing it while a row remains visible can leave the application's cursor state stale until the row disappears. No sensitive-data access or privilege escalation was established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: A hovered node can change its cursor property from pointer to null or another value without disappearing. The subsequent hover-exit handler rejects the current property before consulting its outstanding ownership flag, leaving the pushed cursor active until disappearance. This lets one node's lifecycle affect shared application cursor state beyond its hover region.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A sidebar author controlling node properties gains influence over the application's shared native cursor stack. The demonstrated failure scope is cursor feedback outside the originating hover region, not access to credentials, stored data, or another process.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Sidebar-supplied cursor data crosses into a fixed native visual operation through an exact value check. It cannot select an arbitrary native method or dispatch a tap merely by choosing a cursor value.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Disappearance is a recovery path for the live-update imbalance, but it does not contain the stale cursor to the row's active hover interval. The current implementation couples cleanup authority to mutable configuration rather than solely to outstanding ownership.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make hover-exit cleanup depend on outstanding cursor ownership regardless of the current property, and reconcile ownership when cursor configuration changes while the view remains mounted.

Reconcile cursor state when cursor changes.

When a hovered node changes cursor from "pointer" to null, the hover-exit callback fails its current-property guard before calling NSCursor.pop(). pointerIsPushed remains true, so the pointing-hand cursor can remain active until the view disappears. This is localized, recoverable cursor feedback, not a broader workflow failure.

Make SceneCursor reconcile hovered && cursor == "pointer" from hover changes, cursor-property changes, and disappearance. Add a regression that clears the property while hovered, then exits without removing the node.
