Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to The PR adds a privileged image-bake and promotion workflow that can execute untrusted dispatch values alongside production credentials, while the default VM image includes an integrity-unpinned nightly dependency. This creates high-impact credential-exposure and supply-chain risk, so the PR is not safe to merge until those paths are constrained; additional bounded build and manifest follow-ups remain. Use process lifecycle supervision instead of a 30-second repair loop.
This fixed delay controls desktop recovery after a component exits. Run the desktop components under service-owned restart and dependency rules, or use explicit process-exit notifications. Do not use elapsed time as the recovery signal.
As per coding guidelines and path instructions, production shell code must not use fixed sleeps or polling as synchronization.

Not changed here: systemd already owns restart (Restart=always) for the supervisor; the 30s re-probe is a health poll for components inside the session. Converting to per-component units is a follow-up.

@lawrencecchen, Restart=always only restarts cmux-desktop-boot when that supervisor exits. It does not supervise Xvnc, openbox, tint2, the resize watcher, or websockify, because start-vnc.sh starts them in the background and then exits.
Line 16 in cmux-desktop-boot remains the recovery mechanism for those components. The concern therefore still applies. If per-component systemd units are out of scope for this PR, would you like a follow-up GitHub issue for that work?

Not changed here: this line is byte-identical to the start-vnc.sh that shipped in the Blaxel devbox (Xvnc has no readiness hook of its own; the poll is bounded at 10s). Tracked as a follow-up with the other desktop-script sleeps.

Replace the listener polling loop with a readiness signal.
The sleep 1 loop uses elapsed time to synchronize desktop startup. A loaded builder can fail the bake after 60 seconds even if cmux-desktop becomes ready shortly after. Make the service report readiness only after VNC and noVNC are ready, then run the checks once.
As per coding guidelines and path instructions, production build and runtime code must not use fixed sleeps or polling as synchronization.

Not changed here: bake-time check with a 60s bound, not runtime synchronization. A readiness notification from the unit is a follow-up.

@lawrencecchen, the loop is a bake-time validation check, not runtime behavior. However, it is still new synchronization in a production build script. The applicable rule also covers build scripts.
The 60-second bound does not remove the fixed-delay polling behavior. A readiness notification is the minimal reliable replacement. If this work is out of scope for this PR, would you like me to open a follow-up issue?

Replace the fixed synchronization delay with a completion signal.
Line 173 starts an interactive tmux shell and waits exactly three seconds before cmp. On a slower first shell, the cache file may not exist yet. A valid image can then fail verification and block promotion. Wait for a shell-owned completion event or another cancellation-aware, bounded readiness mechanism. Do not add another fixed delay.
As per coding guidelines, “In non-test TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, and non-Swift build/runtime scripts, do not introduce or materially expand fixed delays used as synchronization.” As per path instructions, “For production runtime, script, and build changes, flag fixed sleeps, delayed dispatch, polling, or wall-clock waits used as synchronization.”

Not changed here: verification-only probe with a bounded delay; a valid image failing here blocks promotion rather than users. Follow-up.

@lawrencecchen, acknowledged. The verification-only scope limits user impact.
The fixed delay can still reject a valid image and block promotion. The readiness-signal change remains valid follow-up work. Would you like me to open a GitHub issue for it?

Learning: In `web/scripts/verify-devbox-image.ts`, the `tmux` verification probes use bounded fixed delays only in image verification. A false failure blocks image promotion rather than affecting a running user VM. Replacing these delays with readiness signals is deferred follow-up work.

Summary
Bakes the cmux Cloud devbox on the Freestyle public platform (
api.freestyle.sh,freestyle@0.2.9) with the desktop layer from the retired Blaxelsandbox/cmux-devboximage, and makes the checked-in manifest the source of truth for the image users get.Rebased onto main after #11602 / the E2B+Daytona removal and the two "record/refresh Freestyle snapshot" commits. Squashed to one commit.
How this lands next to what main already did
Main recorded cmux's own validated Freestyle snapshot (
freestyle-cmux-devbox-20260902c,sh-940ec3bc…, mise-based image, baked on cmux's account) and wrote tests saying Freestyle resolves only throughFREESTYLE_SANDBOX_SNAPSHOT. This PR goes the other way, on purpose, and reviewers should weigh in:FREESTYLE_SANDBOX_SNAPSHOTis ignored. The resolver serves the manifest entry flaggeddefaultForKind(base when the client names no kind), in local dev and every deployed runtime alike; a client-requestedimagemust be in the manifest. Rollback is a manifest revert plus deploy. The env audit reports a lingeringFREESTYLE_SANDBOX_SNAPSHOTas stale configuration to remove; it is no longer a required key, and.env.exampleand the dev loader drop it. Production keeps serving the same image it does today because that image (…20260902c) is now the manifest base default.freestyle-cmux-devbox-20260902h,sh-1d66b9ca…) is listed as validated but NOT a default. Snapshots are account-scoped and this one was baked on Ben's Freestyle team, so it is a reference bake. Promote it under cmux's key with one command (below), commit the manifest diff, and it becomes the desktop+base default.Design points (agreed with Freestyle)
freestyle/ubuntualready has Node LTS (nvm, symlinked into/usr/local/bin), Bun, Python 3.12, uv, Docker running from boot, and its own copies of Claude Code / Codex / OpenCode. Ubuntu's legal notice is silenced, the devshell is sourced once from per-user rc files (after Ubuntu's ownPS1, so the cmux prompt wins), ble.sh's tput-cache seeds are readable by the work user (they were 0700 root, which made every first login print the tput notice), and the bake plus the verifier assert two real interactive logins asubuntuprint nothing from ble.sh or bash and show the cmux prompt. What the desktop snapshot carries
