Summary

Capture immutable authorization and socket sinks per PTY transport context. Keep close authorization fail-closed.

Verification

  • Added denied close regression coverage before the fix.
  • Static diff checks pass.
  • Hosted focused proof will run after PR creation.

Summary by cubic

PTY authorization now reads each transport's live trust, roots, and owner instead of a manager-wide snapshot, so trust changes apply immediately to every PTY control action and terminal frame. Attachments and opening reservations carry generations, so stale callbacks cannot act on a replacement ptyId; authority revocation and overflow errors retire the attachment atomically instead of via a bare close that a same-ID replacement could overtake. A denied close now preserves the attachment — only a newer authority generation revokes it, and transport cleanup continues past reservations owned by other transports.

  • Rechecks trust, roots, and owner before input, resize, flow, close, output, exit, and error publication without calling live-auth callbacks under attachment locks.
  • Reentrant per-attachment gates serialize control and terminal publication while allowing synchronous detach.
  • Makes opening reservations, control requests, and opened PTY cleanup cancellation-safe, lets legacy whole-manager closes cancel any pending open, clears reservations when live trust is rejected mid-open, and keeps a transport's cleanup from stalling on another transport's reservation.
  • Adds regression coverage for trust changes, stale callbacks, denied close, publication races, overflow, reentrant replacement, and transport close during replacement.

Written for commit 6056fac. Summary will update on new commits.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PTY relay reads authorization from shared live state for each operation and publication. Generation identifiers and publication gates isolate replacement attachments and stale callbacks. Control requests support cancellation, with tests covering trust changes, reentrancy, and publication ordering.

Changes

Live PTY authorization and attachment operations

Layer / File(s) Summary
Live authorization context and attachment operations
cmux-tui/crates/chatmux-relay/src/pty.rs, cmux-tui/crates/chatmux-relay/src/session.rs, cmux-tui/crates/chatmux-relay/src/tunnel_terminal.rs
FrameContext reads live trust, roots, owner, and authorization version values. PTY operations recheck authorization before acting. Denied closes preserve attachments.
Generation-safe opening and publication
cmux-tui/crates/chatmux-relay/src/pty.rs
Openings and attachments use generation identifiers and reentrant publication gates. Output, exit, and error frames verify the current generation before publication. Overflow emits an error without removing the attachment.
Cancellable control work and opening integration
cmux-tui/crates/chatmux-relay/src/pty.rs
ControlGuard closes unclaimed control connections. Opening paths pass generation and publication state to attachment sinks. attach-surface requests respond to transport cancellation.
Lifecycle and publication validation
cmux-tui/crates/chatmux-relay/src/pty.rs
Test helpers and tests cover stale cancellation markers, live trust changes, denied closes, stale output, reentrant callbacks, blocked operations, replacement attachments, and publication ordering.

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~90 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔴 Critical · up to 2d651

This change tightens per-transport PTY authorization and lifecycle handling, but the current head is not merge-ready: validation cannot build cleanly, one concurrency test can deadlock, revoked opens can leak capacity, and an asynchronous open can create a PTY after its working-directory authorization has been narrowed. Merge should wait for these issues to be fixed.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the authorization and generation changes and lists verification items, but it does not follow the repository template. The Testing, Demo Video, Review Trigger, and Checklist sections are missing.

Resolution

Add the required sections from the template. Include concrete test commands and manual verification in Testing, provide a demo video link or explain why one is not applicable, add the Review Trigger comment block, and complete the Checklist with the applicable items.

Full details: Cmux Swift Actor Isolation

Explanation

PASS: The pull-request range changes only three Rust files under cmux-tui/crates/chatmux-relay (pty.rs, session.rs, and tunnel_terminal.rs). The diff contains no Swift files or Swift declarations, so it introduces no Swift 6 actor-isolation mistake covered by this check.

Full details: Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime

Explanation

PASS: The PR's changed production Swift files add a synchronous collection query and replace device-only route-selection logic. The diff adds no semaphores, blocking waits, sleeps, delayed dispatch, polling, main-queue sync, or manual locks. The only new Swift test file is test-only and therefore allowed. The PTY synchronization changes are Rust, outside this Swift-only check.

Full details: Cmux Browser Automation Off-Main

Explanation

PASS: The PR does not change browser socket automation. The aggregate diff changes only PTY relay files and unrelated iOS mobile-shell files. Sources/TerminalController.swift and ControlCommandExecutionPolicy.swift are unchanged, and no added Swift/YAML/Markdown lines contain browser, WebKit wait, socket-worker routing, or processV2Command terms. The custom check is therefore not applicable.

Full details: Cmux Expensive Synchronous Load

Explanation

PASS: The custom check applies only to production Swift changes. The verified PR range changes only cmux-tui/crates/chatmux-relay/src/pty.rs, session.rs, and tunnel_terminal.rs, all Rust files. The PR diff contains zero .swift paths and no Swift agent-history load can be introduced or moved by these changes.

Full details: Cmux Cache Substitution Correctness

Explanation

PASS: The pull request diff changes only three .rs files under cmux-tui/crates/chatmux-relay (pty.rs, session.rs, and tunnel_terminal.rs). No production Swift, TypeScript, or JavaScript file changed, so this cache-substitution check does not apply.

Full details: Cmux No Hacky Sleeps

Explanation

PASS: The full diff from main changes only Rust (.rs) and Swift (.swift) files. The custom rule covers TypeScript, JavaScript, shell, and non-Swift build/runtime scripts, so it does not apply. The added Duration/recv_timeout references are in Rust and do not create a covered violation.

Full details: Cmux Algorithmic Complexity

Explanation

No algorithmic-complexity failure is introduced. The changed PTY paths use linear scans for attachment/opening state, with the default attachment limit at 8. Live root checks use the existing path validator, and allowed roots are capped at 32 entries and 16 KiB. The workspace and surface enumeration code is pre-existing and remains explicitly bounded. The session and tunnel changes add authorization state access without collection scans, sorting, or in-memory joins.

Full details: Cmux Swift Concurrency

Explanation

PASS. The pull-request diff against origin/main changes three Swift files, but it adds only a synchronous collection helper, updates device-only Mac selection, and adds async test methods. It does not add background Dispatch queues, Combine state, completion-handler APIs, or fire-and-forget Tasks. The new @MainActor and async throws test annotations are within the permitted test boundary. The remaining Task usages in MobileShellComposite are pre-existing context, not introduced by this diff.

Full details: Cmux Swift `@Concurrent`

Explanation

PASS: The changed production Swift code adds only synchronous mostRecentPairedMac. MobileShellComposite remains @MainActor, and the existing async switch methods keep their isolation and signatures. The new tests are intentionally @MainActor; their persistence calls target the MobilePairedMacStore actor. No new nonisolated async or @concurrent declaration, invalid annotation, or new unbounded heavy async helper was introduced.

Full details: Cmux Swift Package Boundaries

Explanation

PASS. The PR's production Swift changes are already behind SwiftPM library targets: MobilePairedMacStore+Queries.swift is in CmuxMobilePairedMac, and the MobileShellComposite.swift change is in CmuxMobileShell. Both packages define library targets in their Package.swift files. The added coverage is test-target code, which the rule allows. No changed Swift file is in the app target's root Sources/ path, and the main PTY changes are Rust.

1005-1005: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Remove the reservation-cleanup suppression on the trust-revoked path.

Line 1005 sets reservation.active = false, which disables OpeningReservation::drop. This branch never removes opening.ids[pty_id]: the entry is inserted at Line 779 and removed only at Line 1024, or at Lines 960 and 980 on the cancellation paths. The identifier therefore stays reserved for the process lifetime.

Two consequences follow for every open that loses live trust while opening:

  • Each later pty_open for that ptyId fails at Line 761 with bad_request "ptyId is already attached".
  • The stale entry counts toward the concurrency cap at Lines 767-768, so one max_ptys slot is consumed permanently.

The added test live_trust_rejection_clears_open_reservation at Lines 3411-3433 asserts opening_count() == 0, so this path also fails that assertion. Let the reservation drop perform the cleanup; both locks are already released at Lines 1003-1004.

🐛 Proposed fix for the leaked reservation
             drop(opening);
             drop(attachments);
-            reservation.active = false;

Move the RouteGate wait off the Tokio worker

open calls the blocking RouteGate::lock() while running in the Tokio runtime. RealPtyDeps releases this gate from dedicated PTY threads, so this path does not deadlock on a Tokio callback. It can still block a Tokio worker for the full publication duration. Use tokio::task::spawn_blocking or an asynchronous notification for this wait.

previous publication wait in the PTY open flow to avoid calling
RouteGate::lock() directly on a Tokio worker; use tokio::task::spawn_blocking or
an asynchronous notification around previous_gate, while preserving the existing
ordering and waiting semantics before continuing.

CI failure attribution

CI failed on 6056face96 (run 37150535966 attempt 1): 2 code.

Job Verdict Why
Fast static checks code a static check failed
guards / workflow-guard-tests / ci code a guard step failed
Matched log lines
Fast static checks: FAILED localization (1.22s)
guards / workflow-guard-tests / ci: FAIL 0.0s workflow-guard-tests / ci: Guard beta

Not re-run automatically: Fast static checks, guards / workflow-guard-tests / ci are not machine failures.

Written by scripts/ci/classify_failures.py (ci-failure-attribution.yml); signatures are its SIGNATURES table. A machine verdict is the runner's fault, not this PR's.
