Summary

Ships shell autocompletion for the cmux CLI in zsh, bash, and fish. Completion covers commands, subcommands, and flag names, plus live cmux entities: workspace, surface, window, pane, and tab refs, theme names, and VM ids.

The foundation is the ArgumentParser migration already prescribed by docs/cli-contract.md, taken only as far as step 3: a parse-only facade that declares the full command tree, with every declared command's run() delegating to the existing CMUXCLI runner. Completion quality depends on the declared tree, not on whether an implementation was rewritten, so no command implementation moves in this PR.

Routing is unchanged from main for every command the facade does not implement. The router hands ArgumentParser only completion, the hidden __complete-candidates and __dump-command-tree, and the ---completion callback the generated scripts use. Every other invocation, declared or not, goes straight to the legacy parser. A declaration therefore shapes completion and typo suggestions but never runtime behavior: a declaration mistake can at worst complete the wrong thing, never reject an invocation the legacy runner accepts. A command family joins the routed set when step 4 moves its runner.

Design: docs/superpowers/specs/2026-08-21-cmux-shell-completion-design.md
Plan: docs/superpowers/plans/2026-08-21-cmux-shell-completion.md

What's in

  • Parse-only ArgumentParser facade under CLI/Commands/, declaring every command family (auth, meta, VM/remote, window, workspace, pane/surface, browser, tmux compat, hooks and agent launchers, notification, system), including every vm verb and sub-verb family, the --skill spellings of cmux guide and cmux vm guide, and the commands main added while this branch was open.
  • cmux completion <shell> plus dynamic completion handlers for live refs, themes, and VM ids, with a safety contract on candidate output.
  • Typo suggestions derived from the declared tree instead of a hand-maintained list.
  • Generated, committed CLI surface snapshot at docs/cli-command-tree.txt, guarded by tests/test_cli_command_tree_snapshot.py.
  • Parity tests wired into CI, so a dispatched or documented command added on main without a declaration fails CI instead of silently dropping out of completion:
    • tests/test_cli_dispatch_parity.py: every legacy top-level dispatch name, every command cmux help lists, every vm verb the legacy runner dispatches or cmux vm --help lists, the --flag spellings those two help sections document, and alias help equality.
    • tests/test_cli_facade_behavior_parity.py: facade and legacy exit codes and stderr match for 55 invocations, guarding that delegated commands keep reaching the legacy runner untouched.
    • tests/test_cli_completion_scripts.py: generated script syntax for all three shells.
  • Localized command abstracts and option help in Resources/Localizable.xcstrings.
  • Homebrew cask installs completions automatically, via generate_completions_from_executable in both cask generators (.github/workflows/update-homebrew.yml and scripts/build-sign-upload.sh). See below.
  • README install instructions, docs/cli-contract.md updates, and a cmux docs topic.
  • All 20 translated READMEs resynced. They were frozen at e1825d40d5 (2026-07-09) and were missing both the shell completion section and the cmux ssh --command flag from 1328104466. Structure now matches English exactly across all 21 files. The commercial-license paragraph narrowed by e897f771e1 is deliberately left untranslated here; it is a legal correction with a different reviewer and needs its own PR.

What's out

  • Moving command implementations out of CMUXCLI, and routing any delegated command through ArgumentParser.
  • Deleting the hand-rolled parser, deferred one release per the design's rollout section.
  • Any change to CmuxCLIPathInstaller or the command palette.

Install

Homebrew users get completions with no setup as of the first release containing this PR. brew install --cask cmux runs the CLI at install time and writes:

shell path
bash #{HOMEBREW_PREFIX}/etc/bash_completion.d/cmux
zsh #{HOMEBREW_PREFIX}/share/zsh/site-functions/_cmux
fish #{HOMEBREW_PREFIX}/share/fish/vendor_completions.d/cmux.fish

brew uninstall removes them. Any other install method, add the matching line to your shell startup file:

# zsh
eval "$(cmux completion zsh)"
# bash
eval "$(cmux completion bash)"
# fish
cmux completion fish | source

Notes on the cask stanza

The executable is referenced as #{HOMEBREW_PREFIX}/bin/cmux, not the staged-relative path the Cask Cookbook example uses. Artifact::App sorts before Artifact::GeneratedCompletion in ORDINARY_ARTIFACT_CLASSES, and Moved#move leaves no symlink behind, so cmux.app is already out of the Caskroom by the time completions are generated. Artifact::Binary sorts earlier, so the prefix symlink does exist. This matters because write_completion only opoos on failure, so the relative form would have silently shipped no completions.

shell_parameter_format is deliberately unset: Homebrew then appends the bare shell name, producing exactly cmux completion bash|zsh|fish, and defaults the shell list to the three the CLI supports. :cobra builds the same argv but also requests pwsh, which the CLI rejects with exit 2.

The tap's Casks/cmux.rb is regenerated wholesale from a heredoc on every release, so no change to the tap repo is needed or would survive. Both generators had silently drifted apart (homepage and the macOS floor differed, so a local release would have flipped the published cask); they now emit byte-identical casks, and the two brew style offenses are fixed. depends_on macos: :sonoma is not a behavior change, since Cask::DSL::DependsOn#macos= parses with comparator: ">=".

Testing

CLI, on this HEAD, with only the cmux-cli target built. The full app build, a tagged reload, and dogfood are still pending.

  • Pass: test_cli_dispatch_parity, test_cli_facade_behavior_parity (55 cases), test_cli_command_tree_snapshot, test_cli_completion_scripts, test_cli_ssh_pty_attach_retry_suppression, test_cli_vm_resize, test_cli_vm_transfer_progress.
  • Fails, same as on main: test_cli_contract_help, on cmux vm guide and cmux vm --skill. The test expects google-chrome-stable --remote-debugging-port=9222, while main's cloud guide prints google-chrome-stable --no-first-run --remote-debugging-address=127.0.0.1 --remote-debugging-port=9222. This branch touches neither file.
  • Facade and legacy output and exit codes are identical across 56 vm invocations covering every newly declared verb, alias, and sub-verb, -- payloads, = values, repeated options, and unknown sub-verbs.

Verified for the packaging change:

  • brew style and brew audit --cask on the cask, in a scratch tap. Clean apart from one pre-existing Cask/Desc offense ("Description shouldn't contain the platform"), left alone since rewording the product description is a separate call.
  • Both generators executed and their output diffed: identical modulo version/sha256. brew style on the rendered release cask is clean apart from that same desc offense.
  • Homebrew's install-time invocation simulated against the built CLI with every CMUX_* variable unset and no socket: exit 0, zero bytes on stderr, correct headers for all three shells. This is the risk that matters, because Homebrew writes captured stdout straight into the completion file, so any stray stdout would corrupt it.
  • Generated scripts parse: bash -n, zsh -n, and fish --no-execute (fish 4.8.1).

Summary by cubic

Adds shell completion for zsh, bash, and fish to the cmux CLI, built on a parse-only swift-argument-parser facade. cmux completion <shell> prints scripts driven by a declared command tree that mirrors the legacy parser; only completion, __complete-candidates, __dump-command-tree, and the generated scripts' ---completion callback run through the facade, so a declaration can complete the wrong thing but never reject an invocation the legacy parser accepts.

  • Every other command still runs through the legacy CMUXCLI runner, including every top-level command main added mid-branch (automation, vpn, vault, read-selection, fork, local-tmux, agent, sudo, guide, sessions, paste, resize-window, current, glaeda, socket-status). tmux is restricted to attach, surface is its ls/open/new-terminal/resume namespace, all vm verbs and the --skill spellings are covered, and docs/settings/config/hooks candidates come from the same tables their runners resolve against.
  • Dynamic handlers complete workspace/surface/window/pane/tab refs, theme names, and VM ids; they use id ?? ref, time out at 0.5s, degrade silently, and drop names with control characters. --tab uses the caller's own surface or workspace from the environment cmux exports.
  • Typo suggestions derive from the declared tree and never suggest hidden commands; ssh-pty-attach retry noise suppression stays with the legacy runner, pinned by a regression test. cr stays a passthrough alias, gated separately from help aliases.
  • wait-for gains -L/-U with atomic O_CREAT|O_EXCL lock acquisition, lock names hashed from the raw channel name, and a failed -U unlock now errors. Global --name=value options route correctly, and the macOS app build on main is unbroken.
  • Adds cmux __dump-command-tree with a committed snapshot at docs/cli-command-tree.txt; CI gates command/flag/completion changes, script syntax, dispatch/alias/help parity, facade vs legacy exit-code and stderr parity, and the tmux alias and attach-retry regressions, with hermetic subprocess isolation.
  • Homebrew cask installs completions via generate_completions_from_executable in both cask generators; docs add a completion topic, CLI help is localized across all 20 locales, and translated READMEs now cover shell completion and SSH --command.

Rollout

  • Users: add eval "$(cmux completion zsh)" (zsh), eval "$(cmux completion bash)" (bash), or cmux completion fish | source (fish) to the shell startup file; Homebrew users get this automatically.
  • Maintainers: refresh docs/cli-command-tree.txt when commands or flags change; CI fails if the snapshot or parity checks go stale.

Note

Medium Risk
Large CLI surface area declared for completion only—parity tests mitigate drift, but wrong declarations could mislead users without changing runtime behavior; Homebrew install-time completion generation must stay stderr-clean.

Overview
Adds shell completion for zsh, bash, and fish via cmux completion <shell>, backed by a parse-only Swift ArgumentParser facade (CmuxCommand and CLI/Commands/*) that declares the full command tree while delegating execution to the existing CMUXCLI runner. Only facade-native entrypoints (completion, hidden __complete-candidates / __dump-command-tree) run through ArgumentParser; routing for everything else stays on the legacy path.

Completion behavior: static lists are wired from the same catalogs as runners (hooks, docs, settings, config); dynamic candidates query the app over the socket (workspaces, surfaces, windows, panes, tabs, themes, VMs) with tight timeouts and safe fallbacks. Typo suggestions now use CmuxCommand.declaredCommandNames instead of a hand-maintained set. Docs gain a completion topic; help text documents wait-for -L|-U.

Packaging/docs: Homebrew cask generation adds generate_completions_from_executable and normalizes homepage trailing slash; README (incl. Japanese) documents completion setup and cmux ssh --command.

The CLI now uses Swift ArgumentParser facades for declared commands, shell completion, dynamic resource candidates, and command-tree documentation. Legacy execution remains available through facade routing and a parser override. CI adds command-tree, completion, dispatch, and behavior parity checks.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to f4caa

The new command facade can change how existing invocations handle global options and malformed values, potentially causing valid commands to fail or report different errors; completion tests may also validate the wrong execution path. The PR should not merge until CLI behavior parity and the affected test helpers are corrected or explicitly accepted.

Cmux Swift Blocking Runtime ❌ Error CLI/cmux.swift adds production DispatchSemaphore and semaphore.wait(timeout:) in waitForFilesystemPathAbsence, used by new wait-for -L lock polling. Replace the synchronous semaphore bridge and retry loop with an async/callback or signal-based filesystem event completion path that does not block a thread.
Cmux Algorithmic Complexity ❌ Error CLI/Commands/CompletionCandidates.swift:38 adds a shell-completion path that calls uncached availableThemeNames(); it rescans user theme files and sorts them O(T log T) on every completion event. Cache a theme snapshot with directory-change invalidation, or add an explicit candidate bound and benchmark the completion path.
Cmux Full Internationalization ❌ Error CLI/cmux.swift adds reachable raw diagnostics for path removal, global-option values, and wait-for locks; they use no localization API or catalog keys. Wrap each new diagnostic in String(localized:defaultValue:) and add translated entries for all 20 locales in Resources/Localizable.xcstrings.
Cmux No Ambient Global State ❌ Error CLI/Commands/CompletionCandidates.swift:9 adds a caseless static-only runtime namespace; CLI/cmux.swift:37171 also widens CMUXCLIOutput into an internal static-only namespace. Move candidate fetching into an injectable CompletionCandidateProvider at the CLI seam, and inject an output writer into CmuxCommand instead of widening CMUXCLIOutput.

Clear the legacy-parser override before running completion.

Detect a socket connection instead of searching generated output.

Lines 93-98 only prove that the generated script does not render socket_path. A regression can connect to the forced socket and silently fall back without printing the path, so this check still passes.

Bind an ephemeral local Unix socket that records accepted connections. Fail the test if completion generation connects to it.

As per coding guidelines, use local fakes or local ephemeral servers for test isolation.

Keep legacy-parsed numeric options as String?.

SharedLegacyFacadeCommand.run() delegates to the legacy parser, but ArgumentParser converts declared numeric options before run(). This changes legacy behavior for invalid or out-of-range values. Change the affected after, timeout, limit, groups, port, durationMS, steps, lines, amount, and index properties to String?. EventsCommand.limit is already correct. Preserve fallback behavior where the legacy parser defaults invalid resize-pane --amount and wait-for --timeout values to 1 and 30. Consider extracting a shared helper for the filesystem-wait functions.

waitForFilesystemPathAbsence duplicates the entire DispatchSource/DispatchSemaphore skeleton of the existing waitForFilesystemPath, differing only in the polarity of the fileExists check. Extract a private helper parameterized by a "target reached" predicate (e.g., waitForFilesystemPathCondition(_:timeout:until:)) and have both public functions call it. This removes the duplicate DispatchSource setup/teardown logic and reduces the risk of one copy drifting from a future fix applied only to the other (as nearly happened with the TOCTOU issue this file also fixes in the same diff).

Addresses the outstanding CodeRabbit review findings on manaflow-ai#10568. These
arrived as "outside diff range" comments, so they had no review thread.

- Declare every facade option the legacy parser reads as a number as
`String?`. ArgumentParser converts declared types before `run()`
delegates, so a numeric declaration rejected values the legacy parser
accepts and skipped its fallbacks entirely: `events --after abc` never
  reached "must be a non-negative integer", and `resize-pane --amount` /
`wait-for --timeout` never reached their defaults of 1 and 30.
- Teach the legacy pre-command loop the `--name=value` spelling through a
  new `CMUXCLI.splitGlobalOption`, and route `firstNonGlobalArgument`
through the same helper so the two cannot drift. Previously
  `cmux --socket=/path list-workspaces` failed with
  "Path does not exist: <cwd>/--socket=/path".
- Declare `vm-tui-connect` and `vm-tui-approve`, added to the legacy
dispatch after this branch started, and regenerate the tree snapshot.

Tests:
- Scrub `CMUX_CLI_LEGACY_PARSER` so completion tests always exercise the
facade regardless of the parent environment.
- Replace the no-socket output check with a bound ephemeral Unix socket
that counts accepts, so a regression that connects and silently falls
back now fails instead of passing.
- Make the shared `--json` check shell-aware; fish emits `-l 'json'`, so
the literal-token check only passed where fish was absent.
- Cover all 15 numeric options and all four value-taking global options.
Against the pre-fix binary these produce 17 failures.

Also unbreaks the macOS app build, currently failing on main:
`GhosttySurfaceScrollView` reaches its surface through `surfaceView`, and
`BrowserPopupWindowController` needs `import CmuxBrowser`.

Thank you @ammachado, the socket and password fix looks good, and we want to land this :D I merged main in and CI is approved. However, main just added cmux browser repl (#17256), so it needs a declaration and a regenerated docs/cli-command-tree.txt. Could you also keep Localizable.xcstrings in its existing order and only add your 13 keys? The full reorder is about 30k lines of churn that will conflict with every other PR touching strings.

CI on the merged head compiles, but it trips the Swift warning budget: every CompletionKind.custom in CLI/Commands/ uses the deprecated one-parameter closure, and each one also warns about converting a non-Sendable function to @Sendable. Switching them to the three-parameter .custom { arguments, index, prefix in ... } form with @Sendable candidate functions should clear both. Push along with the browser repl declaration and we'll run CI again.

Restore main's file byte for byte and insert only the 13 keys this
branch adds, each beside its closest-named existing key. The earlier
full reorder churned ~30k lines and would conflict with every PR that
touches strings. Translations this branch had filled in for 7 existing
keys are dropped with it; they belong in their own change.

_This was generated by an AI agent and may contain inaccuracies.
Please verify before relying on it._
Every .custom(CompletionCandidates.x) site used ArgumentParser's
deprecated one-parameter closure and converted a non-Sendable function
to @sendable, two warnings per site that exceeded the CI Swift warning
budget. The providers now take (words, index, prefix) and are
@sendable, so the call sites bind the current overload unchanged.

The new form changes the ---completion wire format (word index and
cursor offset precede the words); the live --socket test now sends it.
__complete-candidates also takes its words with .captureForPassthrough:
.remaining rejected the --workspace/--window flags those words carry,
which had kept the selector live test failing since it was added.

_Claude Code on behalf of Adriano Machado (@ammachado)_

Main added `cmux browser repl` (manaflow-ai#17256). Declare it in the facade so it
reaches completion (actions guide|list|mcp|reset, --workspace candidates)
and regenerate docs/cli-command-tree.txt, which also records every
custom completion moving off the deprecated kind.

Thanks @teamleaderleo. All three are in, on top of your main merge:

  • Warning budget (2893f10): the completion providers now take (words, index, prefix) and are @Sendable, so every .custom(CompletionCandidates.x) site binds the current overload without changes. A local build shows no warnings under CLI/, and the regenerated tree has no custom-deprecated entries left. The new form changes the ---completion wire format, so the live --socket test now sends the word index and cursor offset. It also turned up a bug I'd shipped: __complete-candidates used .remaining, which rejected the --workspace/--window words, so the selector live test had never passed. It now uses .captureForPassthrough. All 6 CLICompletionCandidateLiveTests pass locally.
  • browser repl (eed5abc): declared in the facade (guide|list|mcp|reset, --workspace candidates), and docs/cli-command-tree.txt is regenerated. The snapshot, dispatch-parity, facade-parity and completion-script gates pass.
  • Localizable.xcstrings (58f1290): it's main's file plus the 13 keys (+1361/−0). This also drops the locales I had filled in for 7 existing main keys (cli.help.ios, cli.help.simulator, etc.); they can go in a separate PR. The xcstrings, localization parity and defaultValue checks pass.

My local Xcode 27.0 reports 3 warning-budget overages in Sources/ files this PR doesn't touch, which I put down to the toolchain difference. CI on Xcode 26.6 is the real check.

Thank you @ammachado, all three are in and the strings diff is clean now :D CI is approved; we'll merge once it's green.

Thank you @ammachado, it compiles now and the warnings are gone :D However, CI's CLI help contract check fails: cmux wait-for --help now prints [-S|--signal|-L|-U], but docs/cli-contract.md:1096 still expects [-S|--signal]. Could you update that line to match? Push and we'll run CI again.

…s target

Bash splits `--workspace=<ref>` into `--workspace`, `=`, `<ref>` in
COMP_WORDS, and the selector scoping read the `=` as the ref. The settings
completion list also omitted `themes` and `computers`, which the runner
accepts.

Red at bafefab: CLICompletionCandidateLiveTests fails the two new
bash-split cases (2 issues, 5/6 tests pass); test_cli_command_tree_snapshot.py
drifts on the settings completion line.

…d computers

`selectors` now skips a lone `=` after `--workspace`/`--window`/`--surface`,
as `connectionOptions` already does for root options. `settingsTargetNames`
gains the canonical `themes` and `computers` targets.

Green: CLICompletionCandidateLiveTests 6/6 pass; test_cli_command_tree_snapshot.py
passes.

Comment thread CLI/CMUXCLI+Config.swift
`cmux config --help` documents unset, toggle, cycle and preset, and the
runner handles them, but `cmux config <TAB>` never offers them. This
check fails until completion matches the usage line.

…tion

configSubcommandNames listed only part of the verbs the runner handles,
so `cmux config <TAB>` hid four documented subcommands. Add them and
regenerate docs/cli-command-tree.txt.

Comment thread tests/test_cli_config_completion_verbs.py
Every tests/test_*.py needs a test-execution.toml entry, or CI fails and
never runs it. Run it in macos-cli-no-socket beside the command-tree
snapshot it depends on.

The merge of main brought in `cmux jump-to-last-prompt` (manaflow-ai#18951); the
facade now declares it, so `__dump-command-tree` lists it.
