Summary

  • Align TypeScript, Go, Java, and Zig session-derived socket paths with the relaxed server contract.
  • Reject empty, dot components, separators, NUL, Unicode control or line-separator characters, and malformed Unicode before deriving or dialing a session socket.
  • Preserve spaces, Unicode, leading punctuation, colons, and long legacy-safe names.
  • Keep explicit socket paths and CMUX_TUI_SOCKET / CMUX_MUX_SOCKET overrides authoritative.
  • Keep source-compatible Go path helpers deterministic and isolated for invalid direct path queries, while fallible client paths return ErrInvalidArgument before opening a socket.

Regression proof

  • decf539ded4529710b1f5fc1d3db9bec9cbfc114 adds behavior tests only. Hosted SDK checks fail at the intended seams.
  • e09d4e95e61db4c95b278df575fa78426b38d954 adds the SDK implementations and compatibility-path tests.
  • 4a20172f8a5cc190bb4fd01977539f10b678701a applies the hosted Zig formatter fix.
  • 84b58dbb80e1f149c0060b3e3fd625de47660912 combines the server and SDK transport contract text.

Verification

  • Local: Go go test ./..., go test -race ./..., go vet ./..., Windows Go cross-compilation, TypeScript package and focused transport tests, Java scripts/test.sh, and protocol/schema static checks.
  • Hosted: cmux-tui SDK matrix 32006103708 and spec inventory 32006103627 are required for the integrated head.
  • Rust, Cargo, Zig, and Xcode are not run locally.

Dependency

  • This branch is stacked on PR 10239 at 5ad19dbe034824ae33e58d34cf0c4bbc734e40ce.
  • The transport spec preserves the server validation and the SDK fallible and compatibility-helper contract. PR 10249 remains separate and is not modified here.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added consistent session-name validation across the CLI, server, and SDKs.
    • Valid names may include spaces, Unicode, punctuation, and long text.
    • Added session validation support to the TypeScript Node bindings.
    • Long socket paths now use deterministic hashed paths.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Invalid names fail before connection attempts with localized errors.
    • Explicit and environment-provided socket paths remain unchanged.
    • Added deterministic compatibility paths for invalid legacy inputs.
  • Documentation

    • Updated CLI, SDK, and transport guidance for validation and socket resolution.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request expands session-name validation and socket-path resolution across the Rust server and Go, Java, TypeScript, and Zig bindings. Unsafe derived names are rejected, explicit and inherited paths bypass validation, and valid legacy-safe names remain preserved.

Changes

Session-path validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Transport session-path contract
cmux-tui/spec/transports.md
The transport specification defines validation, fallible resolution, compatibility paths, and socket override precedence.
Go session-path resolution
cmux-tui/bindings/go/...
Go adds shared validation and digest helpers. Client and socket resolution validate derived sessions, preserve overrides, and create deterministic compatibility paths.
Go resolution validation and documentation
cmux-tui/bindings/go/...
Tests verify malformed UTF-8 handling, pre-dial rejection, override precedence, digest paths, and valid-name preservation. Documentation records the validation rules.
Java, TypeScript, and Zig validation
cmux-tui/bindings/{java,typescript,zig}/...
The bindings reject unsafe path components, accept valid Unicode and long names, and hash long socket paths.
Binding validation coverage and documentation
cmux-tui/bindings/{java,typescript,zig}/...
Tests and documentation cover rejected names, accepted names, hashed paths, and explicit or inherited socket paths.
Rust server socket resolution
cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui-core/src/server.rs
The server validates session components, returns fallible default socket paths, hashes oversized paths, and propagates errors.
Rust CLI validation and error propagation
cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/...
CLI entry points reject invalid sessions before socket access, preserve explicit overrides, propagate resolution errors, and return localized status 2 errors.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 44a26

This PR changes how session names become socket paths across four SDKs and the server. At the current head, the Go test package still does not compile, and unresolved path-length, cross-platform, validation-contract, and SDK-consistency issues can cause clients to reject or fail to connect to valid sessions; the PR is not merge-ready until these issues are fixed or explicitly accepted.

Validate the session before constructing the socket path.

Line 56 will fail. The supplied defaultSocketPath implementation passes session directly to path.join and never calls validateSessionName. A value such as "../escape" can therefore resolve outside the session socket directory.

+  validateSessionName(session);
   const base = process.env.TMPDIR || os.tmpdir();
   return path.join(base, `cmux-tui-${process.getuid?.() ?? 0}`, `${session}.sock`);

Bound long Unix socket paths in the server and both Go clients.

The /tmp fallback keeps session + ".sock". For legacy- plus 200 bytes, the leaf is 212 bytes and exceeds both Unix socket limits. The Go clients return an unusable path, and cmux-tui-core/src/server.rs cannot bind the same path. Use one shared deterministic bounded derivation, or reject overlong sessions consistently, across the server and both Go implementations.

Greptile Summary

The PR aligns session-derived socket validation and long-path hashing across the Rust server and TypeScript, Go, Java, and Zig SDKs.

  • Adds a shared relaxed session-name contract while preserving explicit and inherited socket precedence in SDK resolution.
  • Uses deterministic SHA-256 fallback paths when preferred Unix socket paths exceed platform limits.
  • Updates CLI diagnostics, localization, transport documentation, and behavior tests.

Confidence Score: 4/5

The PR is not yet safe to merge because authoritative explicit socket routes can still be rejected solely due to unused session text.

Explicit socket invocations remain blocked by unconditional session validation in CLI parsing and server setup, so commands and startup can fail before using the supplied socket.

P1 Explicit socket route rejected

When an explicit socket is supplied with session text that is invalid as a derived path component, parse_args_result rejects the session before the explicit route is selected, causing commands and server startup to refuse a usable authoritative socket.

P1 Long-path fallback is missing

When a valid session name or runtime directory exceeds the Unix socket path limit, the server binds under its short /tmp fallback while this helper retains the over-limit preferred path, causing both TypeScript Node clients to connect to the wrong socket.

P2 Japanese constraints are reversed

The Japanese startup message describes the machine-agent's ASCII and 128-byte restrictions, while the Japanese machine-agent message describes the relaxed startup validator. This tells startup users to avoid valid names and gives machine-agent users guidance that its stricter validator rejects.

Do not return a fallback path that still exceeds the Unix socket limit.

A session such as "legacy-" + strings.Repeat("x", 200) exceeds the limit in the preferred path and in the /tmp fallback. ResolveSocketPath then returns a route that the Unix dialer cannot open.

Use a bounded deterministic mapping when the fallback also exceeds the limit. Apply the same mapping in both Go clients and the server-side transport contract.

Make these path-shape tests platform-specific.

This file runs on Windows. On Windows, defaultSocketPathForSession returns a \\.\pipe\... path. The assertions at Lines 76-79 and Lines 100-102 require Unix prefixes and a .sock suffix. The Windows test job will fail.

Move Unix path-shape assertions to a Unix-specific test file. Keep platform-neutral assertions for determinism, isolation, and validation here.

Remove the explicit socket from this default-path validation test.

--socket bypasses session-derived socket resolution in cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/cli/wire.rs. This command attempts to connect to must-not-connect.sock and returns exit code 3. The status-2 assertion will fail. Remove --socket and clear both inherited socket variables.

Proposed fix

The server validates session text before joining it into the path. A name must
be a non-empty single path component. `.`, `..`, `/`, `\\`, NUL, control
characters, and Unicode line separators are rejected. Existing names with
spaces, Unicode, leading punctuation, colons, or long text remain valid.

Specify the rejected Unicode set.

The contract says “control characters” but does not define the code points, and it does not mention malformed Unicode. The TypeScript implementation rejects C0/C1 controls, U+0085, U+2028, U+2029, and lone UTF-16 surrogates. Other SDKs can otherwise apply different Unicode predicates and derive different socket paths. Define the exact rejected set or reference shared test vectors that include malformed Unicode.

P1 macOS fallback threshold diverges

When a macOS preferred socket path is 104 through 107 UTF-8 bytes long, this fixed 108-byte check keeps the preferred path while the server applies its platform-specific limit and binds the hashed /tmp fallback, causing the TypeScript client to dial a socket that the server did not create.

Align SDK socket discovery with the server’s platform-specific contract. The current implementations disagree on runtime-root precedence and socket-path limits: TypeScript omits XDG_RUNTIME_DIR and hardcodes a limit, Zig uses a fixed threshold, and Java infers capacity from os.name. Boundary cases can therefore derive different socket paths between the server and SDKs, causing session connection failures. Use platform-native limits, consistent root resolution, and document the boundary rules in the transport specification.

Closing as superseded. The current head e9c177d is based on 7f9af0f, while origin/main is 2ead477. Its stated stack depends on the closed validation pull requests #10239 and #10249. The active replacement #10270 carries the cross-SDK session validation and long-socket fallback contract. This branch is retained and is not deleted.
