Summary

  • Reject session names that are empty, non-ASCII, path-like, contain controls, or exceed 64 bytes before socket path resolution.
  • Apply the shared validation to the local server bind path, TUI startup, relay, public CLI routing, and machine agent.
  • Return a localized startup error and document the current transport contract.

Regression proof

  • Commit 1 adds session_names_reject_path_components_and_control_characters and fails on the previous behavior.
  • Commit 2 adds the validator and routes all local socket resolution through it.

Verification

  • rustfmt --edition 2024 --check passed for changed Rust files.
  • python3 cmux-tui/scripts/check-spec-inventory.py passed.
  • Cargo and Rust tests were not run locally. Use the hosted cmux-tui workflow.

Summary by cubic

Rejects unsafe session names before computing socket paths while preserving legacy-safe names. Previously names were joined into paths without checks; now a name must be a non-empty single path component, rejecting ., .., /, \\, NUL, control characters, and Unicode line separators. Spaces, Unicode, and long legacy-safe names remain valid.

  • Adds validate_session_name(&str) -> Result<()> in cmux_tui_core::server and enforces it in server bind, argument parsing, and default path resolution.
  • Changes cmux_tui_core::server::default_socket_path(&str) to return anyhow::Result<PathBuf>; updates TUI startup, lifecycle, wire/raw CLI, relay, machine agent, and remote CLI daemon to surface a localized “invalid session” and exit with code 2.
  • Accepts explicit --socket and CMUX_TUI_SOCKET/CMUX_MUX_SOCKET as-is; validation applies only when using a session name.
  • Updates spec/transports.md to document the contract and adds tests that reject invalid sessions before any socket access.

Migration

  • If you call cmux_tui_core::server::default_socket_path, handle its Result and surface errors.
  • Validate session names with validate_session_name or apply the single-component rules; do not restrict ASCII or length.

Written for commit 5ad19db. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Session names are now validated as safe, non-empty path components.
    • Invalid names, including separators, traversal values, NULs, control characters, and selected line separators, produce clear localized startup errors.
    • Attach, relay, raw, server, and machine-agent workflows now handle invalid session names consistently.
  • Documentation

    • Documented accepted and rejected session-name characters, including compatibility guidance for older servers.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Session names now use shared validation before socket-path construction. Invalid names produce localized startup errors. Socket-resolution failures propagate through CLI, server, machine-agent, and remote-daemon startup paths.

Changes

Session Name Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Session validation contract
cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui-core/src/server.rs, cmux-tui/spec/transports.md
Validation rejects empty, dot, traversal, separator, NUL, control-character, and selected Unicode line-separator names. Other names, including spaces and Unicode, remain valid.
CLI validation and socket errors
cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/cli.rs, cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/cli/lifecycle.rs, cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/cli/raw.rs, cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/cli/wire.rs, cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/localization.rs
CLI parsing and socket resolution return localized invalid-session errors. Failures print usage errors and exit with status 2.
Startup path integration and coverage
cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/main.rs, cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/machine_agent/mod.rs, cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/src/remote_cli.rs, cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui/tests/cli.rs, cmux-tui/crates/cmux-tui-core/src/server.rs
Attach, relay, server, machine-agent, and remote-daemon paths propagate fallible socket resolution. Tests cover rejected and accepted names, including updated Result handling.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 83ad3

The current tests still treat invalid session names as acceptable, so they do not reliably protect the documented naming contract; some localized errors also omit restrictions and may be misleading in the machine-agent path. Correct the test cases and messages before merging.

Align the session-name validators and update the error message. SessionName::new accepts :, leading ., _, or -, and values up to 128 bytes. validate_session_name accepts only [A-Za-z0-9][A-Za-z0-9._-]{0,63}. The validators are not equivalent. Update the machine-agent messages to describe the 1–64-byte format, and deduplicate the validation logic if possible.

Both local CLI paths use cmux_tui_core::server::validate_session_name, and cmux-tui/spec/transports.md documents the relaxed rule. The ASCII-only check applies only to remote SSH sidecars.

Describe the complete session-name contract.

The validator also rejects non-ASCII names, leading _ or -, and names longer than 64 characters. The current text implies that those names are valid.

Update all four messages to describe [A-Za-z0-9][A-Za-z0-9._-]{0,63} or its localized equivalent.

Also applies to: 1195-1195, 1627-1627, 1786-1786

Make the accepted-session cases match the validation contract.

legacy name, 名前, _legacy, -legacy, and the 200-character value must be rejected. They violate the required character set, first-character rule, or 64-character limit.

Keep these values in the rejection cases. Add valid examples such as legacy-name, a_name, and a 64-character ASCII name.

Superseded by the broader cross-SDK session validation work in PR #10254, which includes the core server/CLI behavior and keeps all SDK implementations aligned. Closing this narrower duplicate.
