Adds Whisper dictation to AI chat, agent prompts, channel messages, thread replies, and the collapsed mobile composer. Every supported browser records locally and uploads only when the user confirms. Confirmation appends plain text to the existing draft without sending it; cancel preserves the draft and releases the microphone. Chrome's native speech recognition, language-pack handling, and local/cloud selection are removed.

The frontend uses a callback-based AudioRecorder with singleton microphone ownership and @solid-primitives/stream for volume analysis. Composer handoff, permission cancellation, device termination, final chunks, and upload cancellation have explicit cleanup paths. Deadlines use elapsed time independently of delayed recording chunks. Tests drive recorder events, deferred operations, and an injected scheduler, without sleeps or promise-flush timing.

DSS owns authenticated POST /dictation/transcribe in the hexagonal dictation crate:

  • The existing UserOnly authentication and rate-limit extractors require a signed-in user and allow 60 attempts per user per hour, including failed requests and retries.
  • The domain enforces 8 MiB, five minutes of inspected audio, and 16 concurrent inspections/provider requests per process.
  • infer, Symphonia, and opus-pure inspect browser containers, including Chrome's streaming WebM without container durations. The same encoded bytes go to Whisper, without decoding, conversion, re-encoding, or temporary files.
  • async-openai calls whisper-1 with DSS's existing typed OpenaiApiKey from MacroConfig/Doppler. Provider calls have bounded retries and an overall deadline. SDK response-body logging is suppressed; typed, sanitized diagnostics remain available.
  • Capacity rejection is 503 with a CORS-exposed Retry-After. TanStack owns up to two client retries with exponential backoff and jitter. Cancellation resolves immediately and prevents subsequent uploads. Hourly 429, auth, validation, network, and provider failures are not replayed automatically; the recording remains available for an explicit retry or cancellation. Audio/transcripts are excluded from mutation variables and results.

Whisper uses the existing shared AI usage infrastructure. An additive migration adds nullable price_per_audio_minute to ai_pricing, and nullable audio_seconds / applied minute rate to ai_usage; it seeds whisper-1 at $0.006/minute. Rust domain models use UsageAmount::{Tokens, Audio} and ModelPricing::{Tokens, Audio} rather than unrelated optional fields. Postgres and HTTP adapters translate those enums to the existing flat representation. Existing token request/response fields stay compatible. Token pricing requires both rates explicitly; a model-only or partial request is rejected before it can erase recorded costs. Audio pricing can omit token fields. Repricing leaves mismatched billing units unpriced. The domain service owns admin authorization and rate validation.

Successful transcription records the provider-reported duration through UsageRecorder, attributed to the authenticated user and AiFeature::Dictation. Pricing comes from Postgres; no cost constant remains in dictation. Recording is best-effort and does not delay the response or deduct chat credits. Audio and transcript content are never persisted by the endpoint.

Tracing connects dictation.session, HTTP client/server spans, request extraction, domain admission, container inspection, Whisper, and the asynchronous ai_usage.record span. Metadata includes bytes, format, duration, in-flight requests, stage, provider/error category, retry attempt, outcome, pricing availability, and cost. Frontend types derive from the existing observability Span API. Provider bodies, audio, transcripts, and credentials are excluded.

Validation:

  • 69 targeted frontend tests pass under Vitest 5, covering dictation, mobile chat focus, channel send guards, and agent input. All 46 Rust usage/dictation tests, 30 DSS tests, 26 DCS tests (one existing ignore), and nine comment-import tests pass. The migration test explicitly awaits advisory unlock rather than assuming connection close has released it.
  • TypeScript, affected-crate Clippy with warnings denied, just check, and full workspace SQLx preparation against an isolated fully migrated local database pass. Web/SDK API artifacts and dependency closures were regenerated; SDK TypeScript and endpoint coverage pass. Dependency hashes include the current main branch Vitest upgrade.
  • Chromium exercised real MediaRecorder audio with the production recorder, controls, controller, and HTTP adapter against synthetic responses: automatic capacity retry, readable Retry-After, disabled confirmation, cancellation, rate-limit feedback, one transcript insertion, and released microphone tracks. Mobile Chrome also verified the actual ChatInput focus transition: the composer remains expanded while Cancel holds focus, retains the draft, and resumes normal collapse afterward. Browser verification also confirms that the production composer restores actual Lexical focus after both confirmation and cancellation, with inert removed before each focus call. Earlier verification covered microphone handoff and native speech APIs being inaccessible.
  • Earlier synthetic OpenAI API checks returned HTTP 200 with both DSS dev and production keys. Live Tempo verification connected eight browser/backend spans and found no synthetic transcript or credential in Tempo/Loki. The new usage span follows the same trace context.
  • All 32 PR checks pass on f654675facbfa250163a7e24c1569abf53321762, including the full Rust test suite, web tests/build/type checking, generated SDK validation, and native Linux/macOS dependency checks. The macOS hash was verified by the native CI runner.

Deploy the additive migration, then DCS (which reads the new dictation feature), DSS, and the frontend. The concurrency guard applies after body extraction, so it does not bound every simultaneous inbound upload buffer. A separate service remains an option if measured memory or latency warrants it; the domain and adapters already have a separate crate.

OpenAI documents /audio/transcriptions as Zero Data Retention eligible. The service keys can use Whisper, but a service key cannot verify the actual organization's/project's ZDR setting. Hosted dev UI end-to-end verification was unavailable because the browser login had expired; browser interactions and backend/API checks were exercised separately.

Note

Medium Risk
Introduces a new authenticated upload path, external Whisper calls, and billing schema changes, though audio is transient and usage recording is best-effort.

Overview
Adds OpenAI Whisper dictation to AI chat, agent, and channel composers: record in the browser, upload only on confirm, and append plain text to the draft without sending. Cancel and Escape preserve the draft; send and collapse are blocked while dictation is active.

Backend: new hexagonal dictation crate on DSS exposes authenticated POST /dictation/transcribe (rate limits, size/duration caps, container inspection, transient Whisper calls). AI usage gains audio billing (UsageAmount / ModelPricing, audio_seconds, price_per_audio_minute) and a dictation feature for cost attribution; admin pricing can be token-only or per audio minute.

Frontend: shared recorder/controller UI (volume meter, capacity retries on 503/Retry-After) wired through generated storage/cognition clients and broad test coverage.

Walkthrough

The PR adds a dictation feature with on-device speech recognition and recorded-audio transcription. It adds browser recording, volume analysis, dictation controllers, UI controls, and composer integration for chat, agents, channels, and collapsed inputs. It adds a Whisper-backed transcription crate and authenticated document-storage endpoint. Tests cover browser behavior, controller lifecycles, API requests, validation, cancellation, limits, and composer send blocking. Documentation describes the new interactions.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 46d86

The PR should not merge yet: its dependency check fails, and callers can submit recordings longer than the documented limit for billable processing. The API and frontend query integrations also need correction.

Route transcription through a TanStack Query mutation.

transcribeAudio calls transcribeDictation directly. apps/web/src/features/dictation/composer-dictation.ts passes this function to the composer controller, so confirmation starts the upload outside TanStack Query. Move the upload into a mutation in the queries package and use its mutation function from the controller. Keep the mutation uncached.

As per path instructions: “All network calls to service clients MUST go through TanStack Query in the queries package.”

Add the generated workspace-hack dependency.

dictation is a workspace member and is not listed in the Hakari traversal exclusions. Since its manifest does not declare workspace-hack, cargo x deps --check records stale member manifests and exits with an error.

Run just hakari or cargo x deps from the repository root, then commit the generated changes.

official OpenAI Audio API speech-to-text Whisper file size duration limits and pricing documentation

💡 Result:

<search_synthesis>
The OpenAI Audio API provides multiple speech-to-text options with varying limits and pricing. Whisper-1 The standard legacy Whisper-1 model has a maximum file size limit of 25 MB per request [1][2]. There is no explicit maximum duration limit for this model; however, files must remain under the 25 MB size constraint [3][4]. To process longer audio, you must split the file into chunks of 25 MB or less [1][5][6]. Supported file formats include mp3, mp4, mpeg, mpga, m4a, wav, and webm [1][7]. The cost for Whisper-1 transcription is $0.006 per minute [8][7]. Newer Transcription Models Newer transcription models, such as gpt-4o-transcribe and gpt-4o-mini-transcribe, may have different validation rules, including duration or token limits [2][9]. For instance, some newer models have been noted to have a duration limit, such as 1500 seconds (25 minutes) [3]. Users should consult the specific model documentation when using these alternatives [2][9]. Pricing Summary - Whisper-1: $0.006 per minute [8][7] - gpt-4o-transcribe: $0.006 per minute [10] - gpt-4o-mini-transcribe: $0.003 per minute [10] - gpt-realtime-whisper: $0.017 per minute [11][10][12] For all endpoints, you must send the actual audio file in a supported format; the API does not support sending links to external audio files [2][9]. Streaming is supported for some newer use cases, but note that it is not available for the legacy whisper-1 model [2][9].

NickPlanck July 3, 2025, 8:23pm 1 I was really excited to use GPT 4.0 Transcribe instead of whisper but i just ran into a major roadblock and would appreciate some insight from some other people. See image. Im getting “400 audio duration 3189.204 seconds is longer than 1500 seconds which is the maximum for this model” which is really unfortunate because i spend some time already getting the file size down using FFMPEG command. the 2 options as i see it are: Option 1: Split Long Files - Break files into <25-minute chunks before uploading Option 2: Use Whisper-1 Instead - Whisper-1 has no duration limit (just 25MB file size limit) If there is no other option i will just choose option 2 because its less of a headache, unless GPT4.0 transcribe is way way way better. I see people online speeding up their audio files for cost purposes. I dont care about the cost but if i can do that so it can fit inside GPT transcribe, is it worth it? will speeding it up defeat the purpose of using GPT Transcribe instead of whisper for accuracy? If speeding it up is actually a viable option, should i undo the ffmpeg that set all the files to - sampling rate to 16,000 Hz - audio bitrate to 32 kbps. Keep in mind my longest audio file is 1 hour 16 minutes so even 2x speed wouldnt get it under 25 minutes. Let me know if anyone sees a workaround for this please! Screenshot 2025-07-03 at 4.24.38 PM 2046×820 85.4 KB Sorry for any bad spelling or grammar, Nick jai July 3, 2025, 9:29pm 2 Hi Nick, If cost is not an issue, then the recommendation is to use the GPT 4.0 Transcribe model, as it “offers improvements to word error rate and better language recognition and accuracy compared to original Whisper models.” (Source: Model Card). Technically you could speed up the audio, but as you highlighted, your longest audio file will still not fit with 2x speed. If it’s not too much work, it would be best to chunk the file yourself using any video/audio editing software and have GPT 4.0 Transcribe model transcribe each of those chunks. If speed is the need of the hour, you could make parallel API calls as well and stitch the text that you get back from each model together. In theory this would take the same amount of time as one API call made for sped-up audio file, so it’s only the cost piece that you would have to think about. To start with it, you could try different models with say 3 one-minute long snippets sampled from different parts of your file and compare the results. There is also a GPT 4.0 mini Transcribe model that you can explore, and it might just fit the bill. NickPlanck July 4, 2025, 12:01am 3 Yes, I actually just designed a pre-processor thats going to keep the file size under 25MB and also speed it up by 3x so the max would be 75 minutes, if greater it will still process the file but it wont send it to the API, it will tell me that i need to manually chunk it, if it is less than 75 minutes it will send to GPT transcribe. Thank you for the response! _j July 4, 2025, 12:05am 4 There’s also Whisper, which simply works, and doesn’t have a context window limit by repurposing a multimodal AI as its own endpoint. Its documentation is actually correct without "gotcha"s. With Whisper, I’ve had over three hours of transcript returned, which you can transmit with optimized opus → ogg. <title>Whisper API Limits - Transcriptions - API - OpenAI Developer Community</title> https://community.openai.com/t/whisper-api-limits-transcriptions/167507 Whisper API Limits - Transcriptions - API - OpenAI Developer Community # Whisper API Limits - Transcriptions ## post by mghg on Apr 18, 2023 Apr 2023 I’m testing the whisper api to transcribe audio. In the documentation it says that the file size limit is 25MB but if I try to send files larger than 10MB I get an error. This is my code snippet, I’m using nodejs const resp = await openai.createTranscription( fs.createReadStream(file), “whisper-1”, “”, “verbose_json”, 0, “is” ); I’m a bit confused with the API limits, I would like to know how many requests can be made in parallel, if there is a limit of requests per minute, or transcription time, etc. Something else, asking in the playground I read about version 2 of the whisper API, and that to use it I should only change whisper-1 to whisper-v2 in my code, but I get an error. ## post by id.luchkin on Apr 29, 2023 1. It’s difficult to troubleshoot without the error output, please provide one. 2. You can read about rate limits here. 3. You might have seen `large-v2` model mentioned on Whisper’s GitHub page. In my understanding, it is equivalent to `whisper-1`, which is currently the only model being used by the API and doesn’t have any alternatives yet. ## post by josh8 on Apr 29, 2023 I’ve been having APIConnectionError all day. Connection keeps aborting. Was working fine last night. Might be a Whisper thing right now. ## post by kevinv on May 1, 2023 I’m only versed in Python myself, but I’d like to shine some light on the API limits. The only limit that the API has it that it only accepts files up to 25 MB. There is no limits on duration. If you degrade the bitrate of an audio file, you’ll be able to send in longer and longer conversations. Though, you should note that the lower the quality of the file, the less accurate and reliable the transcription might be, of course. Something is wrong with your snippet. A 10 MB file should go through just fine. I have just sent in a 17.9 MB file using Python. `@josh8` The Whisper API was experiencing degraded performance on 04-28-2023. ## post by josh8 on May 1, 2023 Nah, my code makes sure that the files are under 15MB each. I split them on silent periods using Pydub. I switched to Deepgram yesterday and there’s no limit on file size and it’s done in about 1/20th of the time. I think they’re using TPUs + Whisper Jax. They’re using Whisper’s large model. ## post by mrasifshahzadciit on Jun 16, 2023 I don’t know what your usage is for the transcribed text but if you’re dealing with subtitle files by any chance, how do you deal with the timestamps being in-accurate since each chunk starts at 0:00:00? ## post by zolika84 on Jun 17, 2023 ## post by Starwave on Jul 31, 2023 <title>Whisper API, How to upload file that larger than 25mb - API - OpenAI Developer Community</title> https://community.openai.com/t/whisper-api-how-to-upload-file-that-larger-than-25mb/693285 Whisper API, How to upload file that larger than 25mb - API - OpenAI Developer Community Skip to last reply Skip to top Welcome to the OpenAI Developer Community, a forum for developers to meet and chat with other developers while building with OpenAI’s APIs and developer platform. Yes, that’s pretty much what I meant. Split the file in two parts. Send the first part to the API, then the second part. 8.2k views Summarize Hi! Are you making two separate calls to the API, each with their own chunk? Because then you would send the headers for each request which should resolve the issue, if it is just two files. You need to re-add the transcripts after you returned the results. Also, you can check this resource from the forum: I’m currently using the Whisper API for audio transcription, and the default 25 MB file size limit poses challenges, particularly in maintaining sentence continuity when splitting files. By default, the Whisper API only supports files that are less than 25 MB. If you have an audio file that is longer than that, you will need to break it up into chunks of 25 MB’s or less or used a compressed audio format. To get the best performance, we suggest that you avoid breaking the audio up mid-sentence … Reply Developer Community Connect with other developers building with the OpenAI Platform. Denial of Service

Reachability: External
Exploitability: Moderate
CWE: CWE-770 — Allocation of Resources Without Limits or Throttling

Enforce the five-minute limit on the server.

The five-minute limit exists only in the browser recorder. The service validates only the 8 MiB byte limit, so an authenticated caller can submit supported, low-bitrate audio that is longer than five minutes. Whisper-1 has a 25 MiB file limit but no documented five-minute duration limit, and its pricing is duration-based.

Validate the media duration before provider.transcribe(recording). Do not trust duration metadata supplied by the client. The global semaphore limits concurrent requests, but it does not limit the processing time or cost of one request.

Document the HTTP 415 response.

TranscribeError::into_response returns UNSUPPORTED_MEDIA_TYPE for UnsupportedAudio, but the OpenAPI response list omits status 415. Add status 415 so generated clients model this reachable response.

This is a good idea and may be the best way to do it long term. As a first pass, trying to do both local and server-side transcription gated on client capability seems like a recipe for really hard to find bugs.

Could we either:

  1. Only enable this for chrome and local transcription
    or
  2. Always use the DSS path to do transcription on any device (I recommend this option)

I think either of these changes would let us iterate on this in a sane way.

I also have concerns about sending audio to DSS. I think this could cause performance issues in DSS. Probably fine for now, but will need to be it's own service soon (@whutchinson98 take a look).

this looks sus. Seems like there's probably a lib that does this in a more robust / cross-browser / cross-device way.

Looks like this browser feature is unsupported on Safari and Firefox. This seems like another place to use a good library. There's probably a library that just Polyfills this api for Safari and Firefox

If we're already using non-cross-platform API's we can use the SpeechRecognition api to do transcription

…async-openai Whisper

- Split crates/dictation into domain (models/ports/service), inbound
(axum router) and outbound (Whisper adapter) behind feature flags.
- Detect the audio container from the bytes with infer instead of
trusting the client Content-Type; LanguageHint newtype for the hint.
- Read OPENAI_API_KEY through a macro_env_var newtype and call Whisper
through async-openai (audio feature) with a bounded retry budget.
- Require a signed-in user (UserOnly) and rate limit each user to 60
transcriptions per hour with the shared rate_limit middleware.
- Move the DSS endpoint into the crate's inbound router; wire router
state, Redis limiter, and swagger schema in the composition root.
- Regenerate workspace-hack and dependency closures.

Co-authored-by: Wolf Mermelstein <wolf@404wolf.com>
…t-driven tests

- Add AudioRecorder: constructed with the callbacks that receive levels,
the finished recording, limit, and errors; only one instance holds the
microphone at a time. Levels come from @solid-primitives/stream and
every MediaRecorder chunk advances both the timeline and the duration
cap, so the recorder has no timers.
- Primitives take a recorder factory instead of start-recording and
volume-meter functions; confirm() returns a promise that settles when
text is committed or the attempt is abandoned.
- Replace the 3s finish fallback with a second confirm that commits the
  words recognized so far.
- Rewrite tests around explicit recorder/recognizer events: no fake
  timers, advanceTimersByTime, or Promise.resolve flushes.

…test

The upload used a per-recording MutationObserver purely as a retry
scheduler, then opted out of every mutation feature to keep audio and
transcripts out of the cache. Replace it with a retry loop: same
capacity-only policy, same backoff and jitter, same cancellation, and the
recording is now structurally incapable of reaching a store.

The rate limit test asserted only that a fake returning Exceeded produces
a 429. Counting, windows, and rollback belong to the rate_limit crate's
own tests; what this adapter owns is the key and the allowance, which
nothing checked. Record both in the fake and assert users get separate
buckets — dropping the user id from the key now fails.
The branch added sync_service when its Rust sources referenced
static_assets. Main has since removed that reference, so the rule now
lists a package the drift check cannot find, and the check fails.
