Allow FP32 split partials in prepared dense MLA - #441
Conversation
Carry partial_dtype through dense MLA declarations, tuning queries, scratch and kernels. FP32 avoids intermediate BF16 rounding and doubles partial-output scratch. Defaults and split selection remain unchanged. Validation: Four host dtype contract cases pass. Five dense MLA implementation ASTs match the qualified e3e4fff4cf source. No GPU test was run in this audit environment. Co-authored-by: Martin Vit <martin@voipmonitor.org> Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Co-authored-by: Codex <noreply@openai.com>

The selected dtype passes through tuning and scratch creation, then determines the forward and merge launch paths. Merge output remains BF16. ChangesDense MLA split partials

Suggested reviewers: Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to This change adds an opt-in FP32 partial dtype for dense MLA, and BF16 remains the default. No actionable merge-blocking risk was found, only minor cleanups. Security Architecture ReviewSecurity architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to FP32 is optional, BF16 remains the default, and the reviewed paths consistently size and interpret the selected partial format. Enabling FP32 needs capacity qualification because it increases scratch memory. No new security attack path was established, but serving exposure and some recovery behavior remain unverified. Analyzed 18 functions across 6 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.) Full details: Context-Independent Repository ProseExplanation The reviewed commit message is not context-independent. Its validation line says that “Five dense MLA implementation ASTs match the qualified e3e4fff4cf source.” The opaque hash is implementation shorthand with no locally stated semantic referent, so the reader must use unrecorded history or author context to understand what source was qualified and what the AST comparison proves. The PR description also uses “EXL3 TP9,” “control,” and “candidate” without defining those deployment or comparison concepts locally. Resolution Rewrite the commit validation text to state the checks and results without the opaque revision reference, for example by naming the dense-MLA source or behavior that the AST checks validate. Define EXL3, TP9, control, and candidate in the PR description before using them, or remove those shorthand claims. Keep the behavior, compatibility, and validation statements explicit. Full details: Performance Claim EvidenceExplanation The PR description makes a production-performance claim: it reports 100.00 versus 100.38 median decode tok/s for a TP9 composition check. The repository changes add only the feature record, implementation, and correctness tests. They do not add or reference the real serving command and benchmark path, comparison revisions, worktree, physical GPU, operating mode, correctness state for the performance run, raw timing samples, or ratio direction. The existing 100.38 figure found in Resolution Add a repository-visible serving benchmark evidence artifact. Record the exact target command and benchmark path, baseline and candidate revisions, clean worktree paths or status, physical GPU identity, operating mode and configuration, explicit correctness results, every raw timing sample for both arms, and the ratio calculation with its direction. Bound the 100.00 versus 100.38 statement to that artifact, or remove the performance claim.

Behavior
Allows prepared dense-MLA plans to store split partial outputs in FP32. BF16 remains the default. Planning, scratch sizing, forward stores and merge loads carry the selected dtype consistently.
FP32 removes intermediate BF16 rounding before split reduction. It doubles partial-output scratch, not KV-cache storage, and leaves split selection and attention semantics unchanged.
Implemented. GPU numerical/cache/graph qualification and Kimi-K3 EXL3 TP9 serving are recorded in vLLM #906. This does not establish task-quality gains from FP32 partials.
Scope
Targets
masterdirectly and uses its prepared-plan API. #292 covers the obsoleteCapsAPI and also changes short-request split policy; this PR carries only partial precision into the prepared implementation. Do not merge #292 as an additional dependency for this integration.vLLM #937 exposes
VLLM_K3_DENSE_MLA_PARTIAL_DTYPE=fp32. Omitting the selector preserves BF16 behavior. Runtime matching uses the same FP32 choice in both control and candidate.Validation
python -m pytest tests/attention/test_dense_mla.py \ -k 'partial_dtype or fp32_split_partials or cuda_graph_replay' -q5 GPU cases passed. They validate accepted dtypes, scratch accounting, numerical error against a higher-precision attention reference, and graph replay. vLLM serving coverage additionally includes high cache-page indices. The TP9 composition reproduces all three 4096-token control outputs and acceptance counters at 100.00 versus 100.38 median decode tok/s; this is a composition check, not a claim that FP32 itself accelerates decode.
