Behavior

Prepare native trellis tensors and uniform EXL3 checkpoints through one container-independent TrellisSource / TrellisWeights API. EXL3 parsing is a CPU-only public adapter; canonical MoE planning does not dispatch on Exl3Source or Exl3Weights.

  • Declare uniform bitrate before planning and validate it against rate bytes.
  • Preserve source-global Hadamard coordinates, per-expert sign patterns, FP16 scales and shared gate/up allocation across TP extents.
  • Stage CPU codewords into final GPU storage in bounded expert batches without resident BF16 weight expansion.
  • Forward the low-level uniform EXL3 loader through common preparation; retain separate asymmetric-pair support.
  • Separate BF16 public I/O from the explicitly requested FP16 full-rotation arithmetic.
  • Retain declared row capacities, prepared route-pack programs and optional FP32 prefill reduction for eligible packed/ModelOpt BF16 weights. FP32 atomic reduction does not guarantee bitwise accumulation order.

W4A16 trellis execution uses compact decoding and ordinary unordered atomic route packing. The full-codeword LUT and stable-order packing implementations, controls and tests are reviewed separately:

Both drafts target this interface branch and are optional; neither is a dependency of this PR.

Compatibility and integration

No checkpoint conversion or native version-2 JSON migration is required. Native TrellisConfig callers remain accepted and normalize to TrellisSource. Canonical EXL3 callers use trellis_from_exl3 and pass device to prepare_weights. vLLM #909 supplies that caller without changing extent assignment or serialized MXFP8/BF16 dense weights.

This is the common-API alternative to #415, tracked in vLLM #907. The alternatives overlap and should not both be merged. Historical GPU results from #415 or related kernel PRs do not qualify this source revision.

Validation

Implemented; common-API serving remains research-only pending GPU preparation, peak-memory, graph-replay and matched model qualification. No throughput, acceptance or KLD result is claimed.

At source 437cead, using the existing B12X environment against an isolated checkout:

/home/luke/projects/b12x/.venv/bin/python -m pytest -q \
  tests/moe/test_trellis_adapter.py tests/moe/test_trellis_config.py \
  tests/moe/test_exl3_schema.py tests/moe/test_fused_moe_variant_selection.py

160 passed. Coverage includes lossless word/table assembly, source extents, global signs, staging bounds, corrupt inputs, native configuration and prepared variant selection. Source comparison confirms that the split removes exactly the two extracted features from Python code, plus the query-schema version change. Python parsing and git diff --check pass.

The broader host check also ran:

/home/luke/projects/b12x/.venv/bin/python -m pytest -q \
  tests/moe/test_trellis_adapter.py tests/moe/test_trellis_config.py \
  tests/moe/test_exl3_schema.py tests/moe/test_fused_moe_variant_selection.py \
  tests/moe/test_tp_moe_scratch_bindings.py \
  -k 'not launch_planner_compiles and not scratch_bindings_are_reusable'

181 passed, 28 failed, 1 deselected. The identical 28 tests fail at the unsplit 7fca2aa revision because scratch helpers omit required decode_config arguments; that baseline reports 191 passed, with ten LUT-specific cases now belonging to #436. These failures remain unresolved.

CUDA tests and serving evaluation were not run for the split. Run tests/moe/test_exl3_prepare.py and the relevant W4A16 capacity/route/graph suites, then qualify EXL3 TP9/DCP9 with DSpark and official MXFP4 under matched conditions before deployment. CPU layout tests are not GPU qualification.

API and staging contract: docs/trellis-preparation.md.

AI assistance: OpenAI Codex. Human line-by-line review and GPU qualification remain required before merge. Original contributor commits are preserved; the split is a fast-forward update.

Summary

The MoE preparation API now uses TrellisSource and TrellisWeights to prepare native trellis tensors and uniform-rate EXL3 checkpoints through a shared path. The public, CPU-only EXL3 adapter validates checkpoint data and converts it to that container-independent representation. TrellisConfig callers remain supported. Canonical EXL3 callers use trellis_from_exl3 and pass device to prepare_weights. Asymmetric-pair EXL3 preparation remains separate.

The shared preparation path supports tensor-parallel extents, bounded CPU-to-device staging, and extent-aware intermediate Hadamard signs. This avoids requiring EXL3-specific dispatch in the MoE planner. The preparation contract and staging controls are documented in docs/trellis-preparation.md.

The change also adds an opt-in W4A16 BF16 prefill fused-sum path. Eligible launches use an FP32 output accumulator; decode and ineligible launches retain the existing reduction paths. The MoE query schema version is now 14. Compact decoding, route capacities, prepared launch ownership, and atomic route packing remain part of the stated compatibility contract.

CPU adapter and layout tests are reported as passing in the PR objectives. CUDA preparation, graph replay, and matched-model serving qualification remain pending. The change is not qualified for serving use.

Preserve source-coordinate expert extents, retained two-bit lookup tables and declared row capacities. Keep block-codec epilogues and pipeline tuning intact. Optional FP32 atomic prefill reduction does not guarantee bitwise summation order.

Validation: Host eligibility checks pass for packed, ModelOpt, EXL3 and three block codecs. Syntax and whitespace checks pass. GPU validation of the canonical-base composition remains pending.

Normalize uniform EXL3 slots into TrellisSource and TrellisWeights. Preserve codewords, FP16 scale boundaries, global Hadamard coordinates and bounded CUDA staging. Route the compatibility loader through common preparation while retaining asymmetric-pair support. Native config callers keep their schema and projection-tiered path.

CPU layout and adapter validation: 98 tests passed. GPU preparation, graph replay, performance and full-model fidelity remain unqualified in this environment.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 437ce

Checkpoint validation remains on the new preparation path, and the GPU reduction is opt-in. The change still affects public callers and reusable GPU workspaces; external checkpoint exposure and overlapping workspace use have not been established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Potential exposure is confined by the available evidence to processes that load MoE checkpoints or execute the W4A16 path. Whether a serving or job boundary admits attacker-controlled checkpoint paths is not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The checkpoint-specific adapter retains validation before GPU staging. The shared preparer requires a CUDA destination for CPU payloads and rejects codes residing on a different GPU.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The optional accumulation path relies on caller-owned, reusable GPU scratch. Sequential reuse and capacity checks are evidenced, but the supplied evidence does not prove isolation when launches overlap on one arena or define recovery after interruption.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If callers can overlap launches or cancel work, explicitly establish per-launch scratch ownership and the rule for discarding partially written outputs before reusing an arena.

Explanation

Full details: Context-Independent Repository Prose

Explanation

Changed PR and commit prose depends on development history and undefined shorthand. The PR description says this is an “implementation alternative discussed” in vLLM #907, replaces PR #415, and must not be merged with it. It also asks readers to keep #415 open until a maintainer selects an alternative. Commit messages refer to “GPU validation of the canonical-base composition,” reproduce failures at commit 7fca2aa, and say that LUT-specific cases “move with the LUT change.” These references describe prior discussion or compare revisions instead of stating self-contained behavior and validation. The canonical documents and status labels are otherwise locally clear.

Resolution

Rewrite the PR description and commit bodies to state the resulting API, compatibility impact, technical reason, and validation without relying on #907, #415, #909, commit hashes, maintainer decisions, or prior attempts. Replace “canonical-base composition” with the exact unqualified item, such as “GPU validation of EXL3 CUDA preparation, graph replay, and full-model fidelity is pending.” Remove or move the failure-at-base and test-movement narrative to an explicitly historical changelog. Define any retained shorthand before use.

Full details: Performance Claim Evidence

Explanation

The PR makes a lower-overhead claim for W4A16 scratch memory. The added documentation states that a specified workload decreases planned scratch size from 1,071,913,568 to 308,550,240 bytes. The repository adds no benchmark result or provenance for this claim: no target measurement command, comparison revisions, worktree, physical GPU or operating mode, correctness state, raw samples, or explicit ratio. The document only provides a static size comparison and separately disclaims an end-to-end throughput claim.

Resolution

Either remove the scratch-memory reduction claim, or add repository-visible evidence for the exact workload. Include the real measurement command and path, base and PR revisions, worktree, physical GPU and operating mode, correctness results, raw samples, and the reduction ratio with its direction. Keep the claim limited to those measured conditions.

Fix the PR number and the compatibility statement in the release fragment.

  • PR number: Lines 14-16 list PR 415. The PR under review is #433, and its description says #415 must stay open until qualification. Put 433 in pull_requests.
  • Compatibility: Line 9 says "No user action required." The PR description says canonical EXL3 callers must now call trellis_from_exl3 and pass device to prepare_weights. Callers of the canonical EXL3 path therefore do need to act.
  • Why it matters: AGENTS.md says published fragments stay unchanged and are only corrected with new fragments. Both errors should be fixed before this fragment is published.

Include the prepared rotation dtype in the compile payload.

_weight_payload currently serializes plan.io_dtype as params_dtype. When rotation_dtype changes the prepared weights to FP16 while io_dtype remains BF16, plans with different arithmetic dtypes can produce the same compile payload and reuse an incompatible specialization. Serialize the prepared params_dtype instead, and bump the query schema version if this changes the query semantics.

Clamp direct_token_capacity to size_m.

caps.core_token_counts can produce a planned tokens value below caps.max_tokens. The repository-owned compile_w4a16_fused_moe rejects direct_token_capacity > size_m, so compilation fails before the later small-M direct-launch checks.
