Use the ownership-safe liveness probe budget
When a live proxy is slow to answer, the default findLiveProxy path uses the 750 ms, single-attempt budget, whereas the start path deliberately uses START_OWNERSHIP_LIVENESS (three 1500 ms attempts) because this false-negative previously created duplicate proxies. An embedding shell that uses this new verdict to decide whether to launch can therefore receive not-found plus the configured port while a fallback-port proxy is still live. Invoke discovery with the existing ownership-safe budget rather than the default probe.

Reject invalid config instead of resolving defaults
For the production dependency, loadConfig() catches unreadable, malformed, and unsalvageable configuration and returns getDefaultConfig() rather than throwing. Consequently the catch below does not implement the advertised fail-closed behavior: ocx resolve --json exits 0 and reports port 10100 for a broken config, so an embedding shell may act on a guessed endpoint. Use a strict/diagnostic config read that distinguishes a missing config from an invalid or unreadable one and return exit 1 for the latter.

Test the stop outcome boolean in human mode
After handleStop was changed from returning a boolean to returning StopOutcome, the awaited value here is always a truthy object. Thus a failed stop—including ownership refusal, an unresolvable PID, or a respawned proxy—still prints that requests will fail until the proxy is restarted, even though the proxy may remain live. Check (await deps.handleStop()).ok, as the JSON branch already does.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Report failed shared teardown accurately
When restoreSharedClientStateAfterStop() returns other: true because native Codex config/catalog restoration or Grok restoration failed or threw, this assignment still records sharedTeardown: "restored" before setting the stop failure. The JSON document therefore tells embedding callers that teardown completed even though client configuration may still point at the stopped proxy. Add a failed/partial classification and select it when restore.other is true.

Re-reviewed replacement head df820f8a2dcecf8b5f31e55e9d6726a1f4cb2a10. The prior blockers are resolved: the human stop path reads .ok; resolve uses readConfigDiagnostics so an invalid persisted config refuses instead of silently returning port 10100; liveness uses START_OWNERSHIP_LIVENESS; and a failed non-history shared teardown is represented as sharedTeardown: failed with a stable warning message. The new regression cases cover each boundary, and git diff --check is clean.
No additional code blocker found in the follow-up diff. Approval and integration still wait for replacement exact-head hosted CI on the current dev merge result.
D5/D4 of the app runtime ownership unit: the desktop shell stops resolving the config home, the port and liveness itself. ocx resolve [--json] exposes src/config/paths.ts (home), the CLI preferred-port selection (config.port ?? 10100), and the identity-checked findLiveProxy verdict (pid, runtime-versus-config provenance, version, role) as one versioned document (schema ocx-resolve/1). Exit 0 carries a not-found verdict; exit 1 means the caller must refuse to guess; arguments are pre-parsed in root.ts and exit 64 before preflight side effects, the same ordering ocx ready obeys. ocx stop --json is a reporting layer over the unchanged stop path: the receipt-backed teardown, drain, respawn verification and client-config restore run exactly as before, the human lines print on stderr, and stdout carries one ocx-stop/1 summary derived from the same booleans that pick the exit code (0/1/79/80 unchanged).
Driven red once before implementation (0 pass / 6 fail / 2 errors: missing modules, unknown command, missing stop JSON), then green after. Registered in both test-layout maps. The resolve subprocess tests use a closed configured port: findLiveProxy falls back to probing the configured port when no records exist, and a developer machine can have a real proxy answering the 10100 default — that is the liveness module working as designed, so the deterministic verdict case pins a dead port.
docs-site lifecycle reference gains both verbs; structure/runtime.md records why resolve owns no probing budget and why stop --json is a reporting layer over the unchanged stop path.
The wiring oracle pinned the boolean return shape; the stop --json summary returns { ok, summary } with ok preserving !stopFailed exactly. Assert the new shape and document why.
The typed CliDispatchDeps literal predates the StopOutcome return; the stop runner is never invoked here, so reuse the real summarizer instead of restating the shape, and add the resolve handle.
Three review points folded in. The human stop branch keyed the downtime warning on a now-object return value, printing it even for failed stops; it reads .ok. resolve read config through loadConfig, which repairs an invalid config.json to factory defaults and would have handed the caller a guessed port; it now reads readConfigDiagnostics and exits 1 on a fallback source without probing, while a missing config remains defaults. Discovery borrows START_OWNERSHIP_LIVENESS, the start path ownership budget, because the verdict feeds the shell launch decision. And a failed shared teardown is recorded as failed, never restored.
…wn cases Covers the invalid-config refusal (unit and subprocess), the ownership-safe probe budget (source oracle), the sharedTeardown failed mapping, and the human-mode failure path that must not print the downtime warning. Not run locally per the lane rule; red expectations are documented in the PR body.
A test batch shares one Bun process and Bun does not clear exitCode on a bare undefined assignment; the suite restores with ?? 0 (cli-dispatch.test.ts, service.test.ts). The module-level afterEach assigned undefined, so the last-set code leaked and failed the whole batch with zero failing tests. Save/restore per test instead.

Compare
CodeRabbit follow-up: the fake handleStop now emits a human line through console.log, so the JSON mode proves the stop output moved to stderr and the human mode proves it stayed on stdout.
Re-audit follow-ups for lane A. Liveness is now three-valued: live, absent-proven (every recorded and configured endpoint definitively dead via the updater tri-state probe), or unknown — unknown exits 1 and never authorises a start, instead of collapsing into not-found after one weak probe. Discovery keeps the ownership-safe START_OWNERSHIP_LIVENESS budget. And resolve joins skipsCodexShimAutoRestore, so a read-only lookup made to populate a consent surface never triggers a shim repair first. The handleStop truthiness point from the re-audit was already fixed in 30cfe68 (both stop branches read outcome.ok).
everyEndpointProvenDown is Array.every: the first non-dead answer defeats the proof, so the unknown-runtime-endpoint case cannot also observe the configured port. Assert the designed contract instead: unknown on the record fails closed, and the all-dead case observes both endpoints in order.

Give other precedence in sharedTeardown.
restoreSharedClientStateAfterStop() can set both flags: the Codex preflight refusal sets historyDeferred, then the unconditional Grok restore can set other when it fails or throws. handleStop() treats that combination as a failed stop, preserves the receipt, and does not populate historyDeferredNonces. However, this line reports sharedTeardown: "refused", which misrepresents the failed teardown to ocx stop --json consumers.
Prioritize other. This changes the machine-readable classification without changing the correct receipt-preservation behavior.

Summary
ocx resolve [--json](D5 of the app runtime ownership unit): one versioned document (schema: "ocx-resolve/1") with the config home fromsrc/config/paths.ts, the effective port (the live listener's port when the identity-checkedfindLiveProxyanswers, elseconfig.port ?? 10100), and the liveness verdict (pid, runtime-versus-config provenance, version, role). It is a thin surface oversrc/server/proxy-liveness.ts— discovery borrows the start path'sSTART_OWNERSHIP_LIVENESSbudget, because the verdict feeds the shell's launch decision and a false "nobody listening" is the duplicate-proxy defect class ([Bug] ocx start creates duplicate instances and hops ports on Windows instead of reusing or exiting #5004).findLiveProxycollapses "definitely nothing" and "could not tell" into the same null, so on a null resolve re-asks the recorded and configured endpoints with the updater's tri-state probe (endpointsToProve+everyEndpointProvenDown+probeProxyLiveness). Only a unanimous definitive dead becomesabsent-proven; unknown exits 1 and never authorises starting a new runtime.readConfigDiagnostics, notloadConfig: a missingconfig.jsonis defaults, but an invalid one exits 1 instead of being repaired to defaults — a defaulted port is a guess the caller must refuse. The verb is read-only and joinsskipsCodexShimAutoRestore, so a lookup made to populate a consent surface never triggers a shim repair. Arguments are pre-parsed inroot.tsand exit 64 before preflight side effects, mirroringocx ready.ocx stop --json(D4's CLI half): the receipt-backed teardown, the drain, the Windows respawn verification and the client-config restore run exactly as before. With--jsonthe human lines print on stderr and stdout carries oneschema: "ocx-stop/1"summary — outcome class, service/proxy classification, runtimeDown, the exit code, and a stable one-line message — derived insrc/cli/stop-report.tsfrom the same booleans that already pick the exit code.
