10. Nonword task

Jim Schwoebel edited this page Jun 12, 2021 · 4 revisions

Next, subjects were instructed to complete a Nonword task (10 non-words, 10 seconds each). This task consisted of 10 pages back-to-back where subjects were asked to pronounce a series of pseudoword text strings on the screen. These pseudowords were of two types: those that have orthographically similar “heighbors” (e.g. plive → sounds like live) and those that have no neighbors (e.g. cogd). We selected these pesudowords based on peer-reviewed literature that has shown that patients with AD were mildly impaired relative to the normal controls in reading pseudowords with neighbors, but were markedly impaired in reading pseudowords with no neighbors. Note that, like in the confrontational naming task, subjects could advance as soon as they named the non-word and could stop the timer early on each question.
