Requested by Jeff · project thread

mise no longer leaves a second plaintext copy of your secrets in shell state, and no longer writes decrypted secrets to the env cache.

What changes for users

  • __MISE_DIFF and __MISE_SESSION hold digests, not values. Both variables are inherited by every child of an activated shell, every task, and every mise x child. They used to carry the full text of every env value mise set (including secrets). They now carry a blake3:<hex> digest per value; they only ever compared values, so behavior is unchanged. old values in __MISE_DIFF are untouched because restoring the previous environment needs them.
  • Secrets are never env-cached. A config with an age value (even with redact = false, or one in [vars] that [env] renders), a sops-encrypted _.file, or any directive with redact = true (including an env plugin that returns redact = true) is not written to the env cache; mise just recomputes the environment.
  • A non-cacheable env module is honored. The env cache save only looked at tools-phase results, so a non-tool module returning cacheable = false was still cached. It now keeps the combined env uncached.
  • redact on an env module works. _.my-plugin = { redact = false } was silently ignored, so the plugin's preference always won, contradicting docs/env-plugin-development.md. The user's setting now wins and is no longer passed through to the plugin; a non-boolean redact is a config error.
[env]
API_TOKEN = { value = "...", redact = true }   # no longer in the env cache or any copy in __MISE_DIFF/__MISE_SESSION
_.my-plugin = { redact = false }               # now overrides the plugin's redact preference

Compatibility

__MISE_DIFF and __MISE_SESSION now carry a schema version (a missing field means 1; mise writes 2). A shell that keeps running across an upgrade holds version 1 plaintext, which still matches and reverses cleanly, and is rewritten as version 2 on the next prompt. Version 2 compares digests only. A version 1 mise reading a version 2 blob sees the values as changed.

Caveat

The digests are a plain blake3 of the value, not a keyed hash. The value is still in each child's environment, so this is not a secret store: the win is that no extra plaintext copy exists, removed or unset values do not linger in shell state, and the copy is not exposed to anything that scans __MISE_* variables. A low-entropy value could be brute-forced from its digest.

Also fixed

  • mise x -- fish used to put every env value in fish's argv (-C "set -gx K V"), readable through ps//proc. That re-apply exists because fish's config files run before -C and can overwrite what it inherited (introduced with mise en, feat: added "en" command #1697). It still re-applies, but from temporary variables that the script erases, and from the sandbox-filtered env, so --deny-env now stays denied.

Left out

  • Settings-level redactions names do not mark the env uncacheable; only directive-level redaction does.
  • No _.fnox directive.

Validation

Unit tests for the hashed serialization, reverse with hashed values, redact parsing, and cacheability. New e2e tests env/test_env_secret_hygiene (decodes __MISE_DIFF/__MISE_SESSION and checks the secret is absent while the key remains) and env/test_env_cache_plugin_uncacheable (confirmed to fail with the has_uncacheable fix reverted). Existing hook-env, deactivate, exec and env-cache e2e tests pass locally; the .fish variants could not run (no fish here). cargo clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings is clean. mise run lint-fix stops early locally on a pre-existing package.homepage cargo warning, so I ran fmt, shfmt, shellcheck and prettier directly.

Note

High Risk
Changes core env activation, reversal, caching, and fish exec paths; mistakes could break shell hooks after upgrade or leak/cache secrets incorrectly.

Overview
This PR tightens how mise stores and caches environment secrets so extra plaintext copies do not linger in inherited shell state or on disk.

__MISE_DIFF / __MISE_SESSION (schema v2) now serialize managed new / session env values as blake3: digests while keeping old plaintext for restore. Comparison goes through env_value_matches so v1 blobs from an older mise still reverse cleanly after upgrade. Pristine-env / override logic in reverse_diff_preserving_overrides uses the same matching rules.

Environment caching is disabled when the resolved env is “secret-bearing”: redact = true, age-decrypted values (including via [vars]), sops-decrypted _.file, cacheable = false env plugins, or user redact on _.module (now parsed and stripped before the plugin runs). Non-tool has_uncacheable is merged into the combined toolset env so plugins cannot be bypassed.

mise exec -- fish re-applies env via temporary __MISE_FISH_ENV_* carrier variables instead of embedding values in -C argv (visible via ps / /proc), with sandbox env filtering applied first. hook-env status compares session values with digests and omits secret payloads from displayed patches.

Docs and e2e tests cover cache exclusion, blob hygiene, fish argv, and plugin cacheability.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security & Privacy
    • Redacted and encrypted environment values, as well as results from non-cacheable plugins, are not stored in the environment cache.
    • Environment change and session data store digests instead of plaintext values.
    • Fish command startup keeps environment values out of command-line arguments.
    • Sandbox filtering is applied to environment values restored during Fish startup.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Restoring environment changes now preserves values that were changed or removed by the caller.
    • Environment status reports accurately reflect added, changed, and removed variables.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified which environment values and plugin results are excluded from caching.

…v cache

- __MISE_DIFF stores a blake3 digest per added value instead of the value;
  __MISE_SESSION does the same for its env map. Older plaintext blobs still
  deserialize and compare equal.
- A non-cacheable non-tool env module now keeps the combined env out of the
  env cache.
- age values, sops _.file values and anything redacted are never cached.
- `redact` is parsed for env modules, so the user's setting overrides the
  plugin's preference as documented.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Environment caching now excludes redacted and encrypted values. Diff and hook session data store versioned digests instead of current-version plaintext environment values. Fish startup transfers environment values through temporary variables after sandbox filtering.

Environment secret handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Mark sensitive results uncacheable
src/config/config_file/mise_toml.rs, src/config/env_directive/*
Plugin directive parsing captures the redact option. Environment resolution marks redacted values, age-decrypted values, and SOPS-backed files as uncacheable.

Environment loading and toolset combination propagate uncacheable status. End-to-end tests cover plugin cacheability, redaction, and age-encrypted values. Documentation lists cache exclusions.
Version and hash stored environment values
crates/mise-util/src/env_diff.rs, src/hook_env.rs, src/env_diff.rs
Environment diffs and hook sessions record a version. Current-version new values and session environment values are stored as BLAKE3 digests; blobs without a version use the legacy plaintext version.
Compare stored digests with environment values
crates/mise-util/src/env.rs, src/cli/hook_env.rs, e2e/env/test_env_secret_hygiene
Environment status and reversal compare values according to the stored version. Tests cover legacy plaintext diffs, hashed diffs, runtime overrides, and secret hygiene.

Fish exec environment

Layer / File(s) Summary
Transfer environment values to Fish
src/cli/exec.rs, e2e/shell/test_fish_exec_env_not_in_argv
Exec applies sandbox filtering before Fish-specific environment setup. Fish receives non-PATH values through temporary variables, which the startup script restores and removes. The integration test covers value handling, command-line exposure, and sandbox filtering.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7c7a7

The change keeps secret values out of the env cache and out of stored shell state, and it preserves compatibility with existing sessions. No merge-blocking risk was found. The Fish end-to-end test was not run by the author because fish was unavailable.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7c7a7

The change reduces secret duplication and preserves sandbox filtering. However, switching an already-active shell back to an older binary can corrupt secret ownership tracking: after another configuration overrides the same variable, subsequent cleanup can restore the original secret outside its configuration.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: A live shell containing v2 digest state is not safely understood by the pre-change binary. Its plaintext equality check leaves managed secrets in the computed pristine environment. If another configuration assigns a different value to the same key, the older hook records the original secret as an old value; leaving that configuration then restores the secret without tracking it as managed. This expands secret lifetime into later commands outside the originating configuration. Normal forward upgrades and direct deactivation do not demonstrate this failure; it requires older-reader reuse followed by an intermediate override.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The rollback concern affects an existing user's activated shell and subsequent descendants. Its prerequisites are v2 state, an older binary, and a different configured value for the same variable before cleanup. The exposed asset is the original secret restored beyond its intended configuration lifetime.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A source-derived exposure sequence is: configuration A installs secret S; the shell retains a v2 diff; an older binary processes configuration B assigning another value to that key; digest-versus-plaintext mismatch makes S appear pristine; B's new diff records S as its original; leaving B restores S, and an empty subsequent configuration no longer tracks it for removal. A later child can consequently inherit S. This sequence was not executed during review.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Sandbox filtering precedes Fish carrier creation. Carriers copy only values remaining in the filtered map, the startup script references carriers rather than embedding values in arguments, and each carrier is erased after reapplication. With deny-env effective, execution removes inherited variables absent from the supplied map, including non-UTF-8 entries.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The current reader reverses only values still matching its recorded version-dependent representation, preserving caller overrides. Explicit deactivation reverses stored maps using retained original values. These controls support normal cleanup but do not prevent an older reader from subsequently rewriting incorrect ownership.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Provide a rollback handoff that cleans v2 managed state while a digest-aware binary is still available, or requires a clean shell before using an older binary. Validate the sequence from a secret-bearing configuration through rollback, a conflicting override, and final cleanup.
  • proposed — Consider a secret-hygiene cache generation and retirement of legacy entries, independent of package version, so same-version upgrades cannot keep consuming previously cached sensitive results. This addresses pre-existing persistence rather than a demonstrated new exposure.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[High risk] Changes how environment secrets are stored and compared across shell sessions.

The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issue remains.

What we checked:

  • Old shell values still restore: State without a version defaults to version 1. That version compares plaintext directly, so matching managed values still restore.
  • Allowed fish values survive: The carrier variables are inserted into the environment passed to the child. The later cleanup removes only names absent from that environment.

Summary

This PR stops copying managed environment values into inherited shell state and excludes decrypted or redacted values from environment caches.

  • __MISE_DIFF and __MISE_SESSION store versioned digests while still reading legacy plaintext state.
  • Cache restrictions carry through variables and non-tool environment results.
  • Fish receives values through temporary environment variables rather than command-line arguments. Sandbox filtering now runs before those variables are created.
  • All four previous findings are addressed. Their threads were unnumbered, so they have no entries in previousFindings.

…e digests only

- Any decrypted age value is uncacheable, including redact = false, in both
  the env and vars branches.
- An uncacheable [vars] result keeps the non-tool env cache (read and write)
  and the combined env cache off, since [env] can render vars.
- A non-boolean `redact` on an env module is a parse error instead of being
  dropped.
- env_value_matches compares digests only; plaintext from older mise counts
  as changed.

A shell that keeps running across an upgrade holds plaintext `new` values; they

`mise x -- fish` re-applied every variable with `set -gx K V` in a `-C` script, so
values were visible in ps and /proc. fish still re-applies after its config files
(the reason the code exists, see #1697), but now reads each value from a temporary
variable that it erases.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, hook-env on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, ls on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, registry on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-mise-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

7c7a7fc4536a vs 3bd7f809a7e2 · measured on the runner, not pushed to the history.

A mise started inside a process that holds secrets (experimental mise
secrets) should not spread them. This makes a nested mise treat
variables named in a names-only `__MISE_SECRET_KEYS` marker as secrets
it must not copy anywhere. This is preparatory hardening: nothing sets
the marker until the mise secrets task grants land (M3), so this changes
nothing today. It pairs with overlap-safe redaction (M0b, #13962).

## Before

A mise started inside a process that holds secrets:

- lets templates read them: `{{ env.DEPLOY_KEY }}` or `{{
get_env(name="DEPLOY_KEY") }}` renders the value into a task's `sh -c`
argv, or into `[env]` and so into `mise env` and hook-env output. `{{
exec(...) }}` commands see it too.
- can write it into its env cache.
- records it in plaintext in `__MISE_DIFF.old` when its config overrides
the same key (#13950 hashes only `new`).
- logs it unredacted before `Config` loads (`ARGS: ...` is logged before
the redactor knows about it).
- hands it to every task of a nested `mise run`, including tasks that
never listed it.
- hands it to `pitchfork`, and so possibly to a long-lived per-user
supervisor.

## After

With `__MISE_SECRET_KEYS=DEPLOY_KEY` and `DEPLOY_KEY=...` in its
environment, a nested mise:

1. registers the value (and its lines and JSON-escaped form) for
redaction before anything is logged;
2. hides `DEPLOY_KEY` from every template, from `get_env()` and from
`exec()` children;
3. writes no env cache;
4. never stores `DEPLOY_KEY` in `__MISE_DIFF.old` (leaving a directory
unsets it rather than restoring it);
5. removes `DEPLOY_KEY` and the marker from the environment of every
task it runs, including tasks whose sandbox `allow_env`,
`pass_through_env` or `cache.env` would otherwise read them back from
the process environment;
6. removes them from `pitchfork` invocations;
7. never passes them to the secret sources it runs.

```console
$ export __MISE_SECRET_KEYS=FOO FOO=s3cr3t
$ mise run t     # run = 'echo "foo=${FOO-unset}"'
foo=unset
$ mise x -- sh -c 'printf %s "$FOO"'
s3cr3t
```

`mise x`, shims, and tools a granted script calls still inherit the
value through the OS environment, so a deploy script's `aws` call keeps
working. A forged marker can only add redaction, turn caches off, or
hide those keys from templates and nested tasks; it never grants
anything. Reserved names (`PATH`, `HOME`, `USER`, `SHELL`, `TERM`,
`COLORTERM`, `LANG`, `__MISE_*`) and invalid names are ignored, so
`__MISE_SECRET_KEYS=PATH` does nothing.

## Validation

Unit tests cover marker parsing, stripping, `__MISE_DIFF` exclusion,
redaction patterns, the pitchfork command, and the env-cache gate. New
e2e `e2e/secrets/test_mise_secrets_inherited_marker` passes alongside
`test_env_cache`, `test_task_redactions` and
`test_exec_pitchfork_template_context`. `cargo clippy --workspace
--all-features --all-targets -- -D warnings` is clean.

>
> **Overview**
> Introduces a names-only **`__MISE_SECRET_KEYS`** marker so a nested
mise treats listed variables as **inherited secrets** it must not
amplify. Parsing ignores reserved names (`PATH`, `HOME`, `__MISE_*`,
etc.) and invalid identifiers; on Windows, key matching is
case-insensitive. A forged marker can only tighten behavior (redaction,
cache off, hiding keys)—it never grants secrets.
>
> **Containment:** `PRISTINE_ENV`, dotenv/`env_file` `${VAR}` expansion,
Tera v1 **`get_env`**, nested **`mise run`** tasks (including sandbox
`allow_env` / cache inputs), and **pitchfork** subprocesses no longer
see marked keys or the marker. **`mise x`** and the raw OS environment
still pass values through for granted scripts.
>
> **Leak prevention:** The global log redactor is seeded at startup from
inherited secret values (full value, PEM-like lines, JSON/debug
spellings). **`__MISE_DIFF`** serialization drops plaintext `old`
entries for inherited keys. **Env caching** is disabled when any
inherited secrets are present.

## Summary by CodeRabbit

* **Security**
* Inherited secrets are withheld from nested tasks, templates, sandboxed
tasks, and selected subprocesses; `mise x` continues to pass them
through.
* Secret values are redacted from logs, including logs produced before
configuration loads.
  * Dotenv and environment-file parsing excludes inherited secrets.
* Template environment lookups cannot access inherited process secrets;
missing values use a supplied default or return an error.
* Serialized environment changes omit prior values for inherited
secrets.
* Environment caching is disabled when inherited secrets are present,
preventing them from being stored in cached environments.
