Requested by Jeff · project thread

Before: ${VAR} in a dotenv file resolved from the process environment first. With mise activate exporting .env into the shell, .env.test containing VAR_A="test" and VAR_B="test_${VAR_A}" produced VAR_B=test_base, and the result changed after editing .env. See discussion #13941.

After: a dotenv file's own earlier assignments win, then values loaded so far (expand = true) or the process environment. The example now gives VAR_B=test_test and VAR_C=test_test_test whether or not the variables are already exported.

The cause was dotenvy checking env::var before same-file values. This vendors dotenv-ng-core 1.0.0 (MIT, a dotenvy fork) as crates/mise-dotenv, trimmed of process-environment mutation and with no clippy exemptions. A new mise_dotenv::parse never reads the process environment. dotenvy is removed. Both _.file dotenv loading and env_file setting go through it.

Notes:

  • Dotenv files still always expand same-file references, as documented; docs updated to say own values take precedence.
  • To match the old parser, braced text that is not a substitution (such as ${VAR:=x}) stays literal, and the env_file setting keeps the assignments read before a syntax error and warns with the file name. _.file still fails on a syntax error, as before.
  • ${VAR:?message} and the other :-/:+ forms now work in dotenv files.
  • Added e2e/env/test_env_file_ambient; mise-dotenv unit tests pass; clippy --workspace --all-features --all-targets -D warnings is clean.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes dotenv variable expansion for all .env loads; correct for the reported bug but may differ from prior dotenvy behavior for edge cases.

Overview
Replaces the dotenvy dependency with an in-tree mise-dotenv crate (vendored from dotenv-ng-core), and routes env._.file dotenv loading and the env_file setting through mise_dotenv::parse.

The important behavior change is ${VAR} resolution: earlier assignments in the same file win first, then outer context (already-loaded env when expand = true, otherwise the process environment). That fixes cases where variables exported by mise activate from another .env caused later files to expand against the shell instead of their own values. The old dotenvy workaround (prefixing the file with escaped assignments) is removed.

Docs now describe mise-dotenv and the new precedence. An e2e test covers the ambient-env scenario; env_file parse failures warn once for the whole file instead of per line. Release tooling publishes the new subcrate.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for multiline .env values and rendering environment files.
    • Improved combining values from multiple .env files: later files can use values loaded earlier.
    • .env files now apply assignments parsed before a syntax error.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Corrected variable expansion so assignments can reference earlier values in the same file, which take precedence over existing environment values.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified .env variable expansion and value precedence.

…ambient env

Vendor dotenv-ng-core as crates/mise-dotenv and use it instead of dotenvy, whose
substitution prefers the process environment over earlier assignments in the same file.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 35009

Dotenv files with unusual keys such as a leading digit could break shell activation. The impact is limited to those keys and easy to avoid, so the change is mergeable with a small follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 35009

The reviewed paths retain explicit substitution inputs and existing configuration trust controls. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Risk remains low rather than minimal because authorization of every dotenv input and exposure through all downstream environment consumers are only partially established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is environment construction in the invoking mise context: control of a loaded dotenv file can affect resulting environment values and substitutions. No new service identity or privilege grant was established; maximum downstream command, asset, and environment exposure remains incompletely traced.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Existing configuration trust logic rejects configurations lacking an applicable trust decision, subject to its existing safe-mode and explicit trust exceptions. Tests classify env and env_file configuration as trust-requiring. The parsing integration keeps file reads and ambient substitution selection in the caller; these controls do not independently authenticate every referenced dotenv file or establish the authorization policy for every substitution value.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Recovery is not dependent solely on the cache key: Config records loaded dotenv files and their mtimes as watched inputs. Cache loading rejects changed or missing watched files and also checks version and expiry. This counters the proposed stale-prefix concern when a repair changes the recorded mtime; it does not establish content-level invalidation for edits preserving that mtime.

[High risk] Replaces dotenv parser with custom implementation.

The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable issues remain from this review.

What we checked:

  • Required values still fail: The parser only preserves errors marked InvalidSubstitution. Missing required values return RequiredVariable, which still reaches the caller.

Summary

This PR makes earlier assignments in a dotenv file win over outside values during expansion.

  • Adds the in-tree mise-dotenv parser and routes both dotenv loading paths through it.
  • The latest changes keep assignments before an env_file error and preserve unsupported closed braced expressions as literal text.
  • Adds tests for these behaviors.
  • The previous release-script finding is fixed. No new actionable issues were found.

Update the info box. It still says that dotenv files use dotenvy.

This PR replaces dotenvy with the vendored mise-dotenv parser. The info box still tells users that dotenv parsing uses dotenvy and that they should report parsing problems to that crate. That advice is now wrong. Parsing bugs belong to mise.

Since 2026.10.3, mise has processed backslash escapes inside
single-quoted `.env` values. That broke Windows paths loaded through
`[env] _.file` and the `env_file` setting:

```sh
# .env
UNC_PATH='\\fileserver\data\share'
DIR='C:\temp\'
```

| | 2026.10.3–2026.10.6 | Now (and 2026.10.2 and earlier) |
|---|---|---|
| `UNC_PATH` | `\fileserver\data\share`. On Windows this resolves to
`D:\fileserver\...` on the current drive | `\\fileserver\data\share` |
| `DIR` | parse error: unterminated quote | `C:\temp\` |

Single-quoted values are literal again, as they are in shell, Node's
`dotenv`, and the `dotenvy` parser mise used before 2026.10.3.
Double-quoted and unquoted values still process escapes.

This regression came from #13946, which vendored `dotenv-ng-core`. That
parser decoded `\\` and `\'` inside single quotes. Supporting `\'`
inside single quotes only existed from 2026.10.3 through 2026.10.6, so
it is gone again. To embed a single quote, use a double-quoted value.

Fixes #14227

**Validation:** new `mise-dotenv` unit test and
`e2e/env/test_env_file_single_quotes` (both fail without the fix);
`cargo test -p mise-dotenv` and the existing `.env` e2e tests pass.
