`is_transient` already classifies `reqwest::Error::is_body()` as retryable
("mid-stream body drop"), but the retry boundary stopped one step short. The
retry loop behind `send_with_https_fallback` resolved as soon as the response
headers arrived, and every caller then read the body outside it:
let resp = self.get_async_with_headers(url, headers).await?; // retried
let json = resp.json().await?; // not retried
A large response that dies partway through streaming therefore failed on the
first attempt regardless of `http_retries`.
Generalize that loop over how the response is consumed. `send_with_retries`
takes a `read` closure and runs it inside the retried unit, so callers that
buffer a whole body get the read covered, while callers that need the raw
`Response` — HEAD, streamed downloads, bounded error-body inspection — pass an
identity reader. `json_headers`, `json_headers_with_headers`,
`TextRequest::send`, and `get_bytes` now read their bodies under retry, each
keeping its own decoding so charset handling and deserialization are
unchanged.
`get_html` is deliberately untouched: it rejects non-HTML by inspecting
`Content-Type` before touching the body, and moving the read inside the retry
would make it download bodies it currently discards.
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughHTTP request handling now uses a shared retry mechanism for request failures and response-body failures. Byte, JSON, text, and HTTPS-fallback paths use this mechanism. Version-list reads remain unprotected
When a version-list URL configured with version_regex drops mid-body, fetch_versions still consumes resp.text() after get_async() has returned from the retry loop. The read therefore fails on the first attempt despite http_retries, leaving this path affected by the problem this change is intended to fix.

Reject offline mode before resolving authentication headers.
json_headers calls host_auth_headers before json_headers_with_headers checks offline mode. For a GitHub API URL, this can run resolve_token, including the configured credential_command, before returning "offline mode is enabled". Add the offline guard before host_auth_headers and retain the guard in json_headers_with_headers for direct callers.

A request whose response body dropped partway through failed on the first try, even with `http_retries` set. mise already counts a broken body read as transient, and #14049 extended that to an HTTP/2 stream reset during the read. But the retry loop ended once the response headers arrived, and callers read the body afterwards, outside it: ```rust let resp = self.get_async(url).await?; // retried let json = resp.json().await?; // not retried ``` So a version list or release page cut off mid-transfer failed with `error decoding response body`, with no retry. The retry loop now takes a reader and runs it inside each attempt. These callers read the whole body inside the retry: - `json` / `json_headers` / `json_headers_with_headers` - `get_text` and everything built on its request, including the cached variants - `get_bytes` - a version list read with `version_regex`. It used to fetch the response and read it outside the loop, so it bypassed `get_text`'s HTML check. It now goes through `get_text` with a new `allow_html()`, which keeps the HTML pages that regex parsing expects. Callers that need the response itself, such as HEAD, streamed downloads and error-body inspection, pass the response through unchanged, so their behavior is the same. `get_html` is unchanged too: it checks `Content-Type` before reading, and reading inside the retry would download bodies it currently discards. This takes over #12974 by @Binlogo, which pr-closer closed after 7 days of failing checks. The HTTP client has since moved to `crates/mise-util/src/http.rs`, so this ports the change and does not replay it. They are credited as co-author. The original description gives background: a 27 MB GitHub releases page in `mise-versions` that drops mid-stream. As it says, retrying alone will not always rescue a response that large. Review threads on #12974: - **Greptile: the `version_regex` path was still unretried.** Fixed, as described above. - **CodeRabbit: `json_headers` resolves auth headers before checking offline mode.** Not changed here. That order predates this PR: `get_async` resolved the headers before `get_async_with_headers` checked offline mode. It is a separate fix. ## Validation - New unit tests in `crates/mise-util/src/http/tests/retry.rs`: - `get_text`, `json` and `get_bytes` each get a response cut off before its `Content-Length` on the first attempt and a full one on the second. Each returns the second body after two connections. - `allow_html()` returns an HTML page, which is still rejected without it. - `cargo test -p mise-util --lib -- http::tests::retry` passes all 33 tests with this change, the four new ones among them. - The three retry tests, run against `main`'s code, fail with `error decoding response body`, the symptom this fixes. *AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-opus-5-5; version: unavailable.* 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **Bug Fixes** * Text, JSON, and byte requests now retry transient errors encountered while reading response bodies, not just errors encountered when sending requests. * Updated authentication settings are retained across retry attempts. * **New Features** * Text requests can accept HTML responses when enabled. * Version lists using a custom pattern can now be fetched from HTML pages. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> Co-authored-by: Binlogo <binboy@live.com> Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Problem
is_transientclassifiesreqwest::Error::is_body()as retryable — the comment there literally says "mid-stream body drop" — but the retry boundary stopped one step short of reaching it. reqwest resolves a request as soon as the response headers arrive, so the retry loop behindsend_with_https_fallbackreturned aResponse, and every caller then read the body outside the loop:A response that dies partway through streaming therefore failed on the first attempt regardless of
http_retries. The same gap existed inTextRequest::send(which backsget_text, ~30 call sites) andget_bytes.Change
Generalize the existing retry loop over how the response is consumed rather than adding a second loop beside it.
send_with_retriestakes areadclosure and runs it inside the retried unit:Response— HEAD, streamed downloads, bounded error-body inspection — pass an identity reader and behave exactly as beforeRewired:
json_headers,json_headers_with_headers,TextRequest::send,get_bytes. Each keeps its own decoding (json()/text()/bytes()), so charset handling and deserialization are unchanged.get_htmlis deliberately untouched: it rejects non-HTML by inspectingContent-Typebefore touching the body, and moving the read inside the retry would make it download bodies it currently discards.How this was found
jdx/mise-versionshas been unable to refresh thecodexentry since 2026-09-01;data/codex.tomlis frozen at0.153.0-alpha.2while upstream is at0.153.4, somise latest codexresolves to0.152.0. Its 30-minute job fails on page 2 ofopenai/codex's releases:This patch alone will not fix that case, and I would rather say so up front than imply otherwise. The payload is the real problem there. Measured on page 1 of that endpoint:
assets[]uploadersub-objectsbody(changelogs)GithubRelease/GithubAssetkeepThat page carries 16,004 assets (~160 per release), and the
uploaderobject — which mise never deserializes — is repeated once per asset. WithMISE_LIST_ALL_VERSIONS=1, whichmise-versionssets, that is 11 pages and roughly 300 MB per refresh to produce a ~40 KB TOML. GitHub itself returns 504 on this endpoint often enough thatgh apihit one while I was measuring.So retrying a 27 MB request that dropped mid-stream will often just drop again. Shrinking the request is a separate change with its own trade-offs — GraphQL field selection, or backing
per_pageoff after a body-drop retry — and I did not want to fold it into a bug fix.What this patch does fix is the general case it exposed: a transient body drop is already classified as retryable, and now the retry actually covers it.
Tests
test_json_retries_when_body_drops_mid_stream: a canned server declaresContent-Length: 21, sends 13 bytes, and closes; the second attempt serves the full body. Reverting the production change makes it fail with the same error seen in CI above:test_json_headers_respects_offline_mode:json_headersused to inherit the offline guard fromget_async_with_headers, which this change routes around; the test pins the behavior. Reverting the guard makes it fail.Verification:
