refactor(generate): rename generate bootstrap to generate install-script - #12247
Conversation
…script` `mise generate bootstrap` read as a form of `mise bootstrap` (machine setup), which it has nothing to do with: it writes the `./bin/mise` wrapper that downloads and execs mise for contributors who don't have it installed. `install-script` says what it generates. The old spelling stays as a hidden subcommand that delegates to the new one and warns from 2026.9.0, so CI scripts calling it keep working. It has to stay first in `Commands` because `clap_sort::assert_sorted` requires alphabetical order; both spellings are classified in `command_effects` since the coverage test counts hidden commands. The generated script's internals are untouched — `__mise_bootstrap`, the temp file name, and the `mise bootstrap:` error prefixes describe what the script does rather than naming the command, and changing them would churn every committed `bin/mise`. Only the `rem generated by ...` provenance line, which does name the command, is updated. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

In `@docs/continuous-integration.md`:
- Line 27: Update the sentence referencing `mise generate install-script` so the
verb agrees with the singular subject: change “runs and install” to “runs and
installs.”
- Around line 27-30: Update the install-script examples to provide the required
path value for the --write/-w option, ensuring the generated script is written
to ./bin/mise and argument parsing succeeds. Apply this correction to both
command examples while preserving their existing flags.

Review feedback: the docs replaced the old name without saying it still works or when it goes away. The note lives in the command's long help, so it reaches `--help`, the man page and the generated docs page at once — the old spelling is hidden and no longer has a page of its own to warn on. Also fixes the verb agreement in the sentence above the CI example. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CI's `assert render produces no diff` caught it: regenerating the man page from the committed usage spec puts a blank line back after the `mise plugins ls-remote` example, which the local render run had eaten. Regenerated with `usage generate manpage --file mise.usage.kdl`, which is now byte-identical to the committed file. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Dismissed because a newer commit was pushed; Greptile will re-review the current head.
Instruction countsNothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does. New, nothing to compare against: Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run. Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.

Renames
mise generate bootstraptomise generate install-scriptso it is not confused withmise bootstrap(machine setup). Behavior of the generated download/exec wrapper is unchanged. The old subcommand stays hidden, delegates to the same
InstallScriptimpl, and is scheduled for removal in 2027.9.0 (deprecated_at!from 2026.9.0). Docs, man page, usage spec, and e2e tests follow the new name; e2e still asserts the old spelling works.Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit f867790.
