Summary

  • Preserve the existing installed-tools cache as the default and add an opt-in cache_mode: verified-downloads.
  • Require a mise lockfile and mise install --locked support in verified-downloads mode; cache only mise's download CAS and use a fresh data directory.
  • Document checksum scope and the recompilation tradeoff, and keep the signed mise binary cache separate.

This builds on mise's download CAS. The explicit mode is also intended to let cache-poisoning linters distinguish this path from restored installed-tool trees.

I ran the repository's npm run all checks and npm run typecheck successfully.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a verified-downloads cache mode that caches mise downloads rather than installed tools. It requires a checked-in lockfile and mise 2026.10.7 or newer; unsupported configurations and explicit data-directory overrides are rejected.
    • Each run uses a fresh data directory in this mode. Cache restoration is skipped when caching is disabled or mise’s download cache is turned off.
  • Updates
    • The default cache mode remains installed. Its cache-key prefix now defaults to an empty value; verified-downloads uses a mode-specific prefix.
    • Updated cache and Rust guidance to distinguish the modes and describe Rust toolchain repair with mise 2026.9.2 or newer.

📝 Walkthrough

The action adds a verified-downloads cache mode. It validates the mode’s prerequisites, uses a fresh mise data directory, and caches mise’s download CAS instead of installed data. The existing installed mode remains the default.

Changes: Verified Downloads Cache Mode

Layer / File(s) Summary
Mode contract and isolated setup
action.yml, src/index.ts, src/mise-version.ts, scripts/install-args.test.mjs, scripts/mise-version.test.mjs
The action adds the cache_mode input and checks verified-downloads prerequisites, including a lockfile and supported mise version. This mode uses a fresh data directory and locked installation.
Download-cache selection and lifecycle
src/cache-paths.ts, src/index.ts, scripts/cache-paths.test.mjs, action.yml, README.md
The action resolves, restores, and saves mise’s download CAS in verified-downloads mode. Cache-key defaults, disable behavior, and documentation distinguish the selected cache mode.

Thanks for the careful work here, and for chasing down the bot findings.

I don't think we should add a second cache mode, because the reason for it doesn't hold up. As I understand it, the aim is for zizmor's cache-poisoning audit to tell this path apart from restored install trees. That audit only flags cache reads in release workflows. It also has a fixed entry for this action keyed on the cache input, which defaults to true. It doesn't know about cache_mode, so a release workflow using this mode would be flagged exactly as before. Getting zizmor to recognize it would need a change on their side. They're also unlikely to accept it, because their guidance is that release workflows shouldn't read caches at all.

I agree with that guidance, and I don't want to suggest a cache-backed path for releases. mise's download store only catches a tampered file when a checksum is pinned, and without one a writable cache is trusted. The README notes that not every artifact has a checksum. Release jobs should set cache: false, or cache-mode: none at the workflow or job level. The action already honors the latter. I've documented this in #682.

For non-release workflows, the actions/cache plus cache: false recipe in mise's CI docs already covers caching downloads with --locked. What the mode would add is built-in keying and guardrails, which doesn't seem worth another mode and an overloaded cache-hit output.

So I'm going to close this one. The --locked version detection looks correct on its own (2025.11.11 is the first release with the flag), but it isn't needed without the mode.

AI-assisted — Tool: Claude Code; model: anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5; version: 2.1.295.
