Summary

Implement ThunderAgent program-aware admission and placement as a request classifier plus worker selector, registered through one register(&mut RouterPluginRegistry) catalog entry. Uses the classifier signals in Dynamo #14123 and unified plugin setup in #14149. Related to DEP #13891.

  • The classifier owns program/session state, serializes each session, and defers paused programs through independently pollable futures.
  • Cached worker/rank registration and optional total KV-block capacity provide admission budgets. Live request context progress updates the logical token estimate before completion; this is not a physical KV-occupancy measurement.
  • Best-fit-decreasing repacking supplies a request-local worker preference. The worker selector applies that preference within Dynamo's eligibility and caller constraints; hard pins remain authoritative. Sent reconciles accounting with the actual selected worker.
  • Pause/resume, idle retention, tracking limits, and terminal cleanup remain inside the plugin. Dynamo owns request queues, dispatch, and lifecycle delivery.

The workspace shares one Dynamo revision, 8878cc03cf88898b2afad0032bfbc67f5d1df9e7, across all four policies. ThunderAgent uses canonical plugins::* imports and one combined registry; the other policies continue to exercise the compatible worker-selection API. This refresh preserves the existing scheduler, repacking, and configuration behavior.

Validation

  • cargo test --workspace: 52 passed, including all 31 ThunderAgent tests, against the published git revision with no local source override.
  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings: passed.
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check and git diff --check: passed.
  • Combined-catalog test resolves both plugin roles from one YAML configuration and constructs the classifier with its capacity context.

No new GPU-serving or performance measurements were collected in this refresh.

Earlier description and automated notes (superseded by the current summary above)

Summary

  • implement ThunderAgent program-aware flow control as a Dynamo request classifier
  • register the thunderagent classifier through the statically linked catalog added by ai-dynamo/dynamo#14149, stacked on #14123
  • keep session, program, pause/resume, retention, and observed-worker state entirely inside the classifier
  • leave placement to Dynamo hard/soft session affinity and learn the actual worker only from the Sent lifecycle event
  • derive cached per-rank capacity from Dynamo host context as kv_cache_block_size * total_kv_blocks
  • remove the parallel session-assignment map, custom scorer/picker, and placement-only decay configuration

Related to DEP #13891.

Architecture

The classifier serializes requests within each session and returns an independently pollable future while a program is paused. Dynamo continues to own request storage, queue ordering, eligibility, affinity, worker selection, dispatch, and lifecycle delivery.

The classifier never chooses a worker. Sent records the worker Dynamo actually selected; existing sessions then have exact per-worker accounting because affinity preserves that placement. A first request is admitted against available pool capacity and becomes attributable only after Sent, because classification intentionally precedes placement.

The catalog factory consumes Dynamo cached discovery/model-card state. Classification performs no discovery, model-card parsing, Python callback, or blocking I/O.

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all -- --check
  • CARGO_NET_GIT_FETCH_WITH_CLI=true cargo test --workspace (48 passed)
  • CARGO_NET_GIT_FETCH_WITH_CLI=true cargo test -p thunderagent-dynamo-policy (28 passed)
  • CARGO_NET_GIT_FETCH_WITH_CLI=true cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • git diff --check

Pinned Dynamo catalog revision: 705f272767f367fc7a86a58dd42d1de560044ac9.

Capacity-backed classifier lifecycle
crates/thunderagent/src/request_classifier/capacity.rs, crates/thunderagent/src/request_classifier/mod.rs
The classifier derives worker capacity and liveness snapshots, registers session requests, awaits release, processes events, starts reconciliation, and cancels pending requests.
Program scheduling and lifecycle state
crates/thunderagent/src/request_classifier/scheduler.rs, crates/thunderagent/src/request_classifier/mod.rs
The scheduler tracks programs and requests, applies capacity admission, pauses and resumes programs, handles completion and abort events, retains acting programs, expires stale state, and validates these behaviors with unit tests.
Target-aware worker selection
crates/thunderagent/src/worker_selection/mod.rs, crates/thunderagent/README.md
The worker-selection policy scores load, honors eligible affinity targets, and uses deterministic fallback selection when a target is unavailable. Tests cover both paths.

Tokio 1.48.0 #[tokio::test(start_paused = true)] requires test-util feature and runtime behavior of paused time

💡 Result:

In Tokio 1.48.0, using the #[tokio::test(start_paused = true)] attribute macro requires the test-util feature to be enabled in your Cargo.toml [1][2]. Regarding the runtime behavior, when start_paused is set to true: 1. Requirement of current_thread: Pausing time is designed to work with the current_thread runtime [3][4]. While the macro allows for configuration, attempting to use paused time in a multi-threaded runtime context can lead to unexpected behavior or deadlocks because the runtime assumes that if all tasks are idle, no further progress can be made without advancing time [5][4]. 2. Automatic Time Advancement: The runtime with paused time will automatically advance the clock when the executor is idle—meaning no other tasks are ready to run [3][5]. This behavior ensures that asynchronous operations like timers (e.g., tokio::time::sleep) can complete without manually advancing the time in every instance [3][5]. 3. Deterministic Testing: This mechanism is primarily intended to provide deterministic testing [6]. Because the runtime waits until it is completely idle before advancing time, you can rely on tests progressing predictably [3][5]. If you have blocking operations, you can use tokio::task::spawn_blocking to perform I/O or other tasks; while a blocking task is running, the auto-advance mechanism is temporarily inhibited, allowing you to wait for I/O while keeping the clock stationary [3]. In summary, the feature relies on the test-util crate feature, operates most effectively with a single-threaded runtime, and uses an idle-detection mechanism to safely and deterministically advance time [1][3][6][4].

🌐 Web query:

Tokio time pause start_paused std::time::Instant::now affected or only tokio::time::Instant

💡 Result:

Yes, the Tokio time pausing functionality, including when initialized via start_paused or tokio::time::pause(), affects only tokio::time::Instant and does not impact std::time::Instant [1][2][3]. When time is paused in a Tokio runtime, the runtime saves the current time and ensures that subsequent calls to tokio::time::Instant::now() return this frozen value [1][2]. This allows for deterministic testing of time-based logic [4]. In contrast, std::time::Instant::now() continues to query the underlying system clock as normal, meaning it remains unaffected by the state of the Tokio runtime's clock [1][3]. This behavior is fundamental to how tokio::time::Instant is implemented; it acts as a wrapper around std::time::Instant specifically designed to align with the Tokio runtime's mockable clock, whereas the standard library version is fixed to the system's monotonic clock [5][6][7]. As a result, if you use std::time::Instant::now() within a test where Tokio time is paused, elapsed() will still reflect the passage of real-world (wall-clock) time, while tokio::time::Instant::now().elapsed() will reflect the artificial, paused (or advanced) time managed by the Tokio runtime [1][2][4].

Use a controllable clock for this timeout test.

The scheduler measures resume_timeout_seconds with std::time::Instant, while start_paused controls only Tokio timers. Adding #[tokio::test(start_paused = true)] alone can let the virtual 100 ms timeout expire before the scheduler observes 20 ms of real time. Use a controllable scheduler clock, then enable Tokio's test-util feature and advance paused time deterministically.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The reasoning branch marks every program on the worker, with no stop at pause_target.

The acting loop at Lines 837-854 stops as soon as usage.used drops to target, and it subtracts each paused program from usage. The reasoning branch does neither. It marks every eligible reasoning program on the worker in one pass and never re-checks usage. Each marked program is paused when its current request completes (Lines 983-988), so the worker can drop far below pause_target and lose more concurrency than the pressure requires.

Consider mirroring the acting loop: subtract the program tokens from usage after each mark, and stop when usage.used reaches target.

Update Cargo.lock for the new revision.

Cargo.toml selects af6ceaf6f07d1db7a0966a82520c5fe5f8fc5821, but Cargo.lock still records 8878cc03cf88898b2afad0032bfbc67f5d1df9e7. Cargo rejects this mismatch in --locked mode before the build starts. Regenerate and commit Cargo.lock with the new revision and dependency graph.

In `@Cargo.toml` at line 17, Regenerate Cargo.lock after the dynamo-kv-router
revision change in Cargo.toml, ensuring it records revision
af6ceaf6f07d1db7a0966a82520c5fe5f8fc5821 and the matching dependency graph so
locked builds succeed.
