RUST-REALIZATION-IDENTITY: key Rust realization on declaration identity, retiring the bare-name Hash row - #8410
Conversation
…ecision actually needs
Model only. Nothing consumes these yet; the emitter rewiring and the deletion of bare-name
selection follow, and are deliberately separate commits so the model can be reviewed on its own
terms.
WHY. Rust realization is currently selected from the authored leaf NAME. Two declarations sharing
a spelling therefore receive one answer, and that is not a style defect -- it silently drops a
guarantee. v2.std.node.Hash is Fnv1a64Structural, whose public record constructors are deleted
precisely so the `where lower_hex_16` refinement IS its construction wall. A bare "Hash" checkpoint
row targeting v1_rt::Hash (`pub type Hash = String`) renders that carrier away as a String alias,
and the wall with it. Measured live, not predicted: the emitted v2_std_node.rs carries
`pub type Hash = v1_rt::Hash` at line 36 while functions in the same file return
Rc<Fnv1a64Structural>, and the two disagree at 70 distinct E0308 sites.
TWO AUTHORITIES, NOT ONE WIDER ONE.
DeclarationRef --(gunbc.rust_realization)--> RustTypeIdentity --(extdeps)--> spelling and facts
extdeps keeps how RUST spells a type, cited to the Rust reference. Which module declares Int is a
gunbc-corpus fact and lives in gunbc.rust_realization, outside src/v1 so v2 translation can consume
the same authority rather than inheriting a seed-only fact. Adding a declaring-module column to the
extdeps TypeCheckpoint row was considered and rejected: it asks a cited upstream authority a
question its source cannot answer, and one column keyed on one module cannot express that the
affected names differ from each other.
RustTypeIdentity has three arms because Rust distinguishes three things a checkpoint row fuses into
one String: a primitive whose facts are already grounded in rust_grounding_primitives (joined, not
re-minted, and refusing on an unknown target_name so RustPrimitiveType{"i65"} is not writable); a
named or path type; and an APPLIED type. The third arm is why Bytes is authored as Vec applied to
u8 rather than the string "Vec<u8>" -- a carrier that cannot say base-applied-to-argument cannot
express arity, which rust_checkpoint_scalar_arity_note already records as the cause of the emitted
Rc<Witness> E0107 class. Text is a one-way projection of identity; there is deliberately no parser
back, since admitting one would let a rendered string round-trip into an identity and re-open the
bare-spelling door from the target side.
TEN ROWS, EACH GROUNDED TO AN EXACT DECLARATION, and two absences that are answers rather than
gaps. v2.std.integer.Int and v2.std.nat.Nat are absent because GroupCompletion and the Peano
coproduct are structures to emit, not machine scalars -- both spellings are "Int", and keying on
identity is precisely what lets them differ. v2.std.node.Hash is absent because a census of every
`type Hash` declaration in the corpus finds exactly one, and no declaration legitimately realizes
as v1_rt::Hash: every remaining occurrence of that spelling in the seed is inside a STRING LITERAL
in v1.runtime_rust, which is generated v1_rt.rs text rather than a .dag type reference. A target
row with no legitimate positive source declaration is retired, not rebound.
Compile-checked clean (0 blocking, 11 pre-existing advisories in uri.dag / roster_frontier.dag).
The check used a main-built gunbc as an ORACLE only: it is not wired into any branch path, is
never a fallback, and no execution claim rests on it.
Freeze intact: v1_interpreter.rs host-builtin arms remain 38, unchanged.
…ch had no source declaration
The row `{ dag_name: "Hash", target_type: "v1_rt::Hash" }` is deleted. Not rebound to an identity
-- retired, because the rule for a target row is that some exact source declaration must genuinely
realize that way, and for this one none does.
THE CENSUS. Exactly one `type Hash` declaration exists in the corpus: v2.std.node.Hash =
Fnv1a64Structural. It must NOT realize as v1_rt::Hash. Every other occurrence of the spelling in
the seed is inside a STRING LITERAL in v1.runtime_rust -- generated v1_rt.rs text, not a .dag type
reference -- so there is no declaration left for the row to bind to.
WHAT IT COST WHILE IT STOOD, measured rather than predicted. Fnv1a64Structural's public record
constructors are deleted precisely so its `where lower_hex_16` refinement IS the construction wall.
The row rendered that carrier away as `pub type Hash = v1_rt::Hash`, i.e. a bare String alias,
taking the wall with it -- a DESIGN 4b construction rung demoted with no diagnostic anywhere. In
the emitted 05_eval closure, v2_std_node.rs carried that alias at line 36 while functions in the
SAME file returned Rc<Fnv1a64Structural>; the two disagreed at 70 distinct E0308 sites.
checkpoint_table_bypasses_identity_note recorded this class from declarations at both ends and
stated plainly that no live site had been produced by anyone. That emission is the site, so this
converts a declaration-level lower bound into a measured artifact fact.
THE WITNESS IS FLIPPED, NOT DELETED. residue_table_present_hash_bypasses_identity asserted the
BYPASS on purpose, so the gap would be counted rather than assumed closed. It becomes
hash_spelling_receives_no_realization_and_renders_structurally, asserting the inverse, and stays
enrolled: per DESIGN 4b a climb deletes the redundant production handling, never the executing
evidence that the higher rung is still real. It goes red the day any row re-binds this spelling.
WHAT THIS DOES NOT DO, stated so the commit is not read as the whole cut. The remaining nine rows
are STILL keyed on the bare spelling and still answer once for two declarations. Keying them on
declaration identity needs module plumbing the emitter's type renderer does not have: measured,
NONE of rust_render_checkpoint_scalar_bare, render_rust_applied_type_arg or render_rust_decl_type
carries a ModuleIndex, and type_reference_decl_file reaches every site only because it is a pure
function of the node. That threading is the rest of the cut and is not attempted here.
rust_seed_host_numeric_alias and its file roster therefore still stand; their retirement is
sequenced with the threading, since removing them before identity keying exists would delete the
only working discriminator.
Regen: 145 files written, exactly two changed, no unrelated drift.
Freeze intact: v1_interpreter.rs host-builtin arms remain 38.
MERGE, NOT REBASE, per the squash-merge policy: history is flattened at merge anyway and a merge commit avoids a force-push. WHY NOW. tidy-lark-471 root-caused the "host tool unresolved: cargo" rows and the fix is on main at 3abc17b. setup-rust-toolchain defaults cache: true, which runs rust-cache, which registers a POST cleanup deleting binaries from ~/.cargo/bin absent from the baseline captured when THAT job started. Correct on a GitHub-hosted runner whose home dies with the job; wrong on this fleet, where _work is per-slot but /home/ghrunner/.cargo is ONE directory shared by every slot, so each job deletes against a home its siblings are using. PR runs execute the workflow from THEIR OWN BRANCH, so this branch kept producing those rows until it picked the fix up. Confirmed inherited: witnesses.yml now carries cache: false at line 28. I had earlier relayed those rows as possibly-environmental. That was wrong and the correction is adopted rather than argued with. My own reruns are what settle it, below. REGEN. The merge left stage0 stale (regen_divergence_count=1, compiler_tests.rs). Regenerating produced exactly one change, and it is this branch's own consequence rather than main's: five generated assertions of the RETIRED behavior are deleted -- coerce_primitive_type(Rust, "Hash") == "v1_rt::Hash" is_copy(Rust, "Hash") == Some(false) They are derived from the checkpoint table, so retiring the row retires them. Note these never executed: that block sits in a `#[cfg(test)] mod compiler_tests;` inside the v1-compiler crate while CI only runs the separate v1-compiler-tests package, which is the same never-ran-evidence class checkpoint_table_bypasses_identity_note already documents. The executing replacement is the enrolled .dag witness, which this branch flipped to a permanent regression control. FREEZE INTACT ACROSS THE MERGE, checked rather than assumed: main added 48 lines to v1_interpreter.rs and NONE of them is a host-builtin row. Arms remain 38. Fixed point green after regen.
…oes, in a discovered root
SELF-CORRECTION. My previous commit flipped an assertion in
src/v1/tests/claim/checkpoint_identity_keying_witness_test.dag and called it a "permanent regression
control" that "goes red the day any row re-binds this spelling". It does not run.
MEASURED, NOT INFERRED. The required floor invokes:
claim_executor --required-floor --source-root $ROOT/dag --source-root $ROOT/src/v2
src/v1 is neither source root nor scan dir, and appears in NO workflow file. A floor run log
carrying 619 v2.test rows carries ZERO v1.tests rows, with a positive control confirming the search
works (ci_heal_skew_guard: 29 hits). SEVENTEEN witness files and 127 test fns live in that tree and
none of them executes in CI.
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE SAME CLAIM WAS FALSE ABOUT THE SAME SUBJECT, so the in-tree note is
corrected rather than softened. checkpoint_table_bypasses_identity_note was itself written to repair
a false evidence citation: it had named a generated residue block inside a `#[cfg(test)] mod
compiler_tests;` that CI never compiles. The repair moved those assertions OUT of a block CI never
compiles and INTO a directory CI never discovers -- the identical defect one layer over. Evidence
that cannot fail is not evidence, whether it fails to compile or fails to be found. DESIGN 4b(1)
calls this rung inflation in the compiler's own self-description, and it is worse than sitting low
because an inflated class never ranks for climbing.
THE REPLACEMENT IS BEHAVIOURAL, NOT A DIRECT CALL. test.claim.hash_checkpoint_retired_witness
(dag/test/claim, a discovered root) compiles a module through compile_dag_rust_emit_check and reads
the EMITTED BYTES: it requires `struct Hash` and forbids `v1_rt::Hash` and `type Hash = String`.
Asserting rust_scalar_checkpoint_render_base returns none would only prove the lookup answers
nothing; this reds if ANY path -- checkpoint, alias renderer, or a future re-binding -- puts the
spelling back. The fixture declares its own Hash rather than importing v2.std.node because the
retired table was keyed on the BARE SPELLING, so the spelling is the load-bearing input; that is the
same construction, and the same reason, as the sibling root_d_checkpoint_scalar_declared_arity.
PROVEN IN BOTH DIRECTIONS BY EXECUTION, and the red arm is a real binary rather than a planted
mutation: it FAILS against claim_batch built with the Hash row present, and PASSES against one built
with the row retired (71ms, under the 100ms warn). The red arm was obtained by accident -- a stale
binary -- which is how I found the control was discriminating at all.
The superseded src/v1 witness is left in place, unflipped by this commit: it is one row of a
17-file un-enrolled population, and re-homing that population is a separate subject with its own
owner, not something to smuggle into this cut.
…ecord it, do not land it
WHAT WAS TRIED. Map-key requirement propagation walks a required type's FIELD type expressions, and
a type ALIAS has no fields: it is a bare leaf item whose right-hand side hangs off the item's own
inference rather than off a child. So `type Hash = Fnv1a64Structural` terminated the walk,
Fnv1a64Structural emitted with PartialEq but without Eq or std::hash::Hash, and
`Map<Hash, RuntimeValue>` in v2.extdeps.runtimes.v2_effect_io_pure failed at four sites.
MEASURED, NOT REASONED, in three arms over the same v2.compiler.05_eval closure, counting distinct
primary error spans:
A 0cd36b5, pre-cut 300 pub type Hash = v1_rt::Hash;
B Hash row retired 267 pub type Hash = Rc<Fnv1a64Structural>;
C B + the alias arm 263 (all four E0277 gone, none added)
THE EDGE WAS ALWAYS MISSING. It became observable only when the bare-name checkpoint stopped
realizing Hash as a String alias, because until then the key type carried Rust's own derives and the
hop was never asked for -- the defect's own output had been standing in for the traversal. That is
the second census a deletion produces: not what depended on the thing, but what it was hiding.
WHY IT IS REVERTED, and this failed loudly rather than being argued: following every alias
right-hand side makes `type Int = AbelianGroup<GroupCompletion<Nat>>` and
`type Nat = CommutativeSemiring<Magnitude>` reach map-key positions, both carry Rc<dyn Fn> fields,
and the fold refuses them -- regen_divergence_count=2, two compile_error! rows in std_algebra.rs.
That refusal is a FALSE POSITIVE whose shape is this lane's own subject: the derive analysis reasons
about a type's DECLARED structure while the emitter renders its REALIZED one. Int and Nat realize as
i64, which already carries Eq and Hash, so AbelianGroup never appears at a key position at all; Hash
has no realization and therefore renders structurally, which is exactly why its hop is owed.
So the rule is not `follow aliases` but `follow an alias precisely as far as the emitter renders it
structurally`, and the authority answering that is gunbc.rust_realization rust_realization_target_for,
keyed on DeclarationRef. This module has names, not declaration identity -- the same threading the
identity-keyed lookup_checkpoint cut is blocked on.
A PROXY WAS AVAILABLE AND IS REFUSED. Hash aliases a bare record; Int and Nat alias an APPLIED
template. Keying on that separates every specimen measured here and would have gone green. It also
traces a property nobody claims is the real one, which is the substitution this note exists to name,
so it is written down as refused rather than left for a reader to rediscover as a clever fix.
What lands is the note and nothing else: additions only, no emitted behaviour changed,
regen_divergence_count=0. The four sites stay open, attached to their dissolution trigger.
…st would not have fixed that review 53510 is right, and it is right against this PR's own body, which says the fix that would consume these modules is NOT LANDED. Verified rather than accepted: across dag/ and src/, the only occurrence of gunbc.rust_realization or rust_realization_target_for outside the defining files is inside a PROSE STRING LITERAL in map_key_alias_hop_gap_note. Not a call. render_rust_type_identity is referenced nowhere at all, including inside its own module. Zero production consumers. WHY THEY EXISTED AND WHAT CHANGED. They were authored as step 1 of an identity-keyed lookup_checkpoint cut expected to land in the same PR. That cut turned out to be blocked on threading declaration identity through the type renderer, which converted step 1 into speculative authority -- ten branded declaration bindings and a grounding check that nothing reads. DESIGN section 3 is explicit that the replacement grows by earned addition and that nothing is in Y unless someone put it there; section 5 is explicit that a typecheck is not a consumer. WHAT I DID NOT DO, because it is the tempting move: add a witness executing rust_realization_rows_are_grounded. That would give the table a TEST, not a CONSUMER, and would convert a reviewable absence into a green check standing where a consumer was owed. The rows would still be asserted-not-verified -- nothing establishes that std.integer.Int realizes as i64 except the row saying so, because no production path reads it. Testing it would have made the objection harder to see without making the authority earned. This is the same rule this branch applied to the alias hop two commits ago -- do not land a construction whose correctness is not established -- turned on my own earlier work rather than on a proposal I was already declining. A SECOND-ORDER DEFECT CREATED BY THE FIX, repaired in the same commit. map_key_alias_hop_gap_note cited gunbc.rust_realization rust_realization_target_for as the authority that answers where an alias hop must stop. Deleting the module would leave that citation pointing at a symbol the tree does not carry -- the section 3 stale-citation class, produced by the act of fixing something else. The note now states the authority does not exist yet and names the removal, so the sentence is true after the deletion rather than true only before it. Nothing else is lost: the two-authority design and the refusal of a declaring-module column on the extdeps row as a layer inversion are recorded in checkpoint_table_bypasses_identity_note, as a proposal rather than as built fact, which is what they now are. regen_divergence_count=0.

Conflicts were the three generated seed files only. Resolved by taking main's side wholesale and regenerating: the branch's seed differs from main's only by qualification, which is semantically identity, while main's side is the projection of the emit-authority changes #8410 landed. Mixing the two assembles a seed that is the projection of neither. The one incoming .dag file, test.claim.hash_checkpoint_retired_witness, arrived with an import block; stripped and its two names qualified, per the branch's standing rule.

…xed point holds #8410 landed on main touching this same authority and its generated seed, so the receipt taken against the previous base no longer described the tree this would merge into. Re-run in full rather than carried forward. MERGED-BASE RECEIPT (srv2, clean detached worktree at the merge commit): pass 1, emitter predating the roster ItemKind Hash 0 pass 2, binary built from the stage-1 seed ItemKind Hash 1 pub obs_human_elapsed 1 pass 3, binary rebuilt from the pass-2 seed regen exit 0; diff byte-identical to pass 2 (3052 bytes both) FIXED_POINT=YES final diff vs committed: v1_compiler_trait_derive_emit.rs only SCOPE OF THE NEGATIVE CONTROL ON THIS BASE, stated because the raw numbers read otherwise. Pass 1 here is a negative control for the ItemKind half ONLY. obs_human_elapsed comes back 1 rather than 0 because the merged committed seed already carries the regenerated v1_compiler_runtime_rust.rs from this branch's earlier commit, so the binary built from it already knows how to emit the helper; only trait_derive_emit's seed was taken from main's side at the merge. The obs_human_elapsed negative control was established on the previous base -- row absent, symbol gone, E0425 -- and that evidence stands on its own. This run does not re-establish it and is not claimed to. The merge resolved the generated file by REGENERATING it, never by hand-merging: the driver refused the path, which is the behavior it exists for, and its own recipe already warns that one pass can self-verify at divergence 0 for the wrong reason because the first pass runs a binary predating the change it emits.
Review found the roster was the wrong repair and it is deleted, not narrowed. WHY IT WAS WRONG, and I verified each claim rather than taking them: BARE-NAME KEYED. The row said type_name: "ItemKind" and fed that string into a fixpoint whose declaration population is also keyed by bare decl_name. There are TWO ItemKind declarations in this repository -- v1.compiler.items (src/v1/04_items.dag:49) and v2.std.decl_index (src/v2/std/decl_index.dag:2) -- so the row did not mean "the exact v1 ItemKind that coproduct_reflection.rs keys on requires Hash". It meant "whichever declaration named ItemKind the current emission population happens to retain". That worked, and working is not the same as being an authority. It also recreates, one layer up, precisely the class #8410 had just closed. MY CITED JUSTIFICATION WAS FALSE. The comment argued that hand-written Rust "sits outside the containment tree, so there is no symbol to cite", invoking DESIGN section 3's carve-out for positions where no symbol exists. There is a symbol: dag/gunbc/rust_item_identity.dag models exactly this, and FLOOR_DECL_PARSE_MEMO is representable as a RustItemIdentity with RustStatic. I asserted an absence without searching for the thing I claimed was absent, and then used that absence to justify the weaker key. THE SMALLER REPAIR REMOVES THE REQUIREMENT INSTEAD OF DECLARING IT. The memo uses exactly new, get and insert; ItemKind already derives Ord and Vec<String> is ordered, so a BTreeMap keyed on the same tuple preserves every observable operation. Hash is then not required by anyone, the roster has nothing to declare, and no registry exists to grow a second row. The roster's own note said the second requirement gets another row, which is the definition of the growth surface a semantics-frozen seed must not acquire. CONSEQUENCE FOR THE RECEIPT, which becomes stronger rather than weaker: regeneration now STRIPS Eq + Hash from the emitted ItemKind, and the crate must still build, because its only consumer no longer needs them. Losing the derive is the expected outcome, not a regression. coproduct_reflection.rs is hand-written -- absent from the stage0 emission plan, ordinary commit history -- so editing it is repairing a consumer, not editing a generated artifact. The obs_human_elapsed half of this PR is untouched and remains an exact authority sync.
* Feed the hand-Rust ItemKind map-key requirement to the derive authority Regenerating stage0 from main's .dag produced a seed that would not compile: ItemKind lost its Eq + Hash derive and coproduct_reflection.rs keys a StdHashMap on (Vec<String>, ItemKind). The derive was reaching the seed only because someone had edited the generated file, so regeneration deleted it -- authority describing something other than what executes, and discovered only by regenerating for an unrelated reason. THIS IS NOT NEW MACHINERY AND NOT A DERIVE WIDENING. v1_map_key_required_type_ names already computes map-key requirements as a least fixpoint, and v1_with_map_key_requirement already unions Eq + Hash onto the population it finds. The fixpoint reads type-EXPRESSION positions in the .dag corpus, and its own note already names this residue verbatim: "a map keyed by a type that appears in NO such position is not discovered ... loud, not silent -- the emitted crate fails the same rustc E0277 it fails today". A map keyed in hand-written Rust is precisely that case. No corpus reading can find it, because the key position is outside the corpus. So the roster is the declared inbox for the one input the single authority provably cannot observe, and it feeds that authority's own seed rather than emitting anything itself. Adding Hash to the general derive strings would have been the wrong repair at a far larger grain -- it widens the trait surface of every emitted type, which under SemanticsFrozen + MaintenanceActive is PublicSurfaceGrowth rather than the BehaviorPreservingCorrectness this is. The consumer is cited by path rather than by symbol, against the DESIGN section 3 default. That rule admits a position where no symbol exists to name, and hand-written Rust sits outside the containment tree the namespace authority walks, so there is no symbol to cite. Dissolution is per-row rather than one condition for the roster: each hand-Rust consumer is independently removable, which is the grain section 5 requires, and a single broad trigger over a growing roster would launder exactly the expansion this roster must not have. * Move the elapsed-time runtime helpers into the authority that emits them #8399 added obs_human_elapsed directly to the generated v1_rt.rs and made obs_human_duration public there, then called the helper from hand-written cli_run.rs. runtime_rust.dag was never taught either fact, so regenerating deletes the symbol and un-publishes the other, and cli_run.rs fails to resolve them. git log -S over runtime_rust.dag confirms it never defined obs_human_elapsed on any commit. The bytes here are copied from the live generated seed rather than rewritten, because the goal is that the first regeneration PRESERVES the checked-in runtime and the second produces no diff. This deliberately invents no new observation format: the formatting authority remains gunbc.observation_ci_render.ci_human_elapsed, which the doc comment already names, and changing the rendering would be new behavior needing its own decision rather than authority repair. * Carry the requirement's dissolution as a top-level row, because the substrate refused a field Regeneration died on the first attempt with: invalid type: string "compile_error!(unsupported mock expression)", expected internally tagged enum DissolutionCondition unbound_dissolution works as a top-level data row -- this module already has five of them -- but not as a field value inside a record literal inside a list, where it evaluates to an unsupported mock expression and the decode fails. I had authored it as a field deliberately, on the DESIGN section 5 grain argument that one obligation should cover one independently removable unit, and treated the file's five sibling rows as house style worth deviating from. They are not: the convention encodes a constraint the substrate enforces. The fix follows the working precedent rather than routing around it, which is what section 5 asks when the obstacle is the substrate itself -- noticing you are about to work around something IS the line-stop signal. The grain argument is not abandoned, only relocated. With one requirement this row is one obligation for one removable unit; a second requirement gets its own named row rather than sharing this one, so the roster cannot acquire a single broad trigger that launders its own expansion. Recorded in the code rather than only here, because the next author to reach for a per-row typed field needs the refusal and not just the convention. * Regenerate stage0: the authority now produces the seed, and regeneration is idempotent Three generated files move, each explained rather than accepted as noise. v1_compiler_trait_derive_emit.rs and v1_compiler_runtime_rust.rs carry the two new authority rows, which is the point of the change. v1_compiler_infer_items.rs is the one that needs saying out loud, because it does NOT match the bytes it replaces. The authority spells the trait std::hash::Hash and APPENDS it through derive_traits_union, where the hand-edit spelled it bare and inline; rustfmt then split the longer attribute one entry per line. The derive is semantically identical -- std::hash::Hash IS Hash -- but "byte-identical to the current seed" holds for the runtime repair and does NOT hold here. That is acceptable on the merits rather than by redefinition: the bytes being replaced were hand-written into a generated file and were never produced by any authority, so the target is authority-to-seed consistency, not preservation of that particular spelling. RECEIPT, executed on srv2 from a clean detached worktree at this branch: negative control (pass 1, binary whose emitter lacks both rows) ItemKind Hash 0 pub obs_human_elapsed 0 build of stripped seed exit 101 E0425 cannot find function obs_human_elapsed in module crate::v1_rt E0599 get on HashMap<(Vec<String>, ItemKind), _> trait bounds unsatisfied E0599 insert on HashMap<(Vec<String>, ItemKind), _> trait bounds unsatisfied positive (pass 2, binary built from the stage-1 seed) ItemKind Hash 1 pub obs_human_elapsed 1 pub obs_human_duration 1 v1_rt.rs byte-identical to committed (absent from diff) fixed point (pass 3, binary rebuilt from the pass-2 seed) regen exit 0, diff byte-identical to pass 2 (27746 bytes both) FIXED_POINT=YES Both authority rows are therefore load-bearing by execution rather than by assertion: delete them and the seed loses exactly those two symbols and fails with exactly those three errors. ONE PROPERTY WORTH RECORDING, because it explains how this survived. The defect cannot be repaired in a single regeneration pass. Pass 1 runs on a binary built from the old seed, so it emits the new emitter's SOURCE while simultaneously stripping the very symbols needed to compile the binary that would emit them. Anyone doing the obvious thing -- regenerate and see -- gets a tree that will not build and reasonably concludes their own change broke it. The failure mode punishes precisely the person who tries to fix it, which is why the restore step between passes is deliberate and named here rather than done quietly. * Regenerate trait_derive_emit onto the merged base; receipt re-run, fixed point holds #8410 landed on main touching this same authority and its generated seed, so the receipt taken against the previous base no longer described the tree this would merge into. * Record why the requirement's key is a String, and tie it to the sibling gap's trigger Review raised that type_name: String is a stringly registry, and suggested a typed identity instead. The key is a String because its CONSUMER is: v1_map_key_required_type_names takes type_decl_items as Map<String, Node> and decides membership through map_has_declared_type(name: String). A typed carrier would be converted back to a string at that seam and would introduce a second notion of type identity into a module that has none -- a nicer field with the string still underneath it. That is not an opinion. map_key_alias_hop_gap_note, in this same module, is blocked on exactly this and says so: "This module has names, not declaration identity. NOT LANDED FOR THAT REASON." That note also refused an available structural proxy rather than trace a property nobody claims is the real one, and this row refuses a typed wrapper for the same reason. So the two are recorded as sharing ONE dissolution trigger rather than sitting as two unrelated string keys: when declaration identity reaches this analysis, the alias arm lands and this roster re-keys onto it, together. COMMENT-ONLY, so the fixed-point receipt is untouched and is not re-run. Proven rather than assumed, with a positive control: a distinctive phrase from an existing .dag comment in this module appears 0 times in the generated seed, while a .dag data string appears once -- so the grep can find emitted text and the zero means comments are not emitted. * Replace the ItemKind derive roster with a BTreeMap consumer repair Review found the roster was the wrong repair and it is deleted, not narrowed. --------- Co-authored-by: Brian Searls <briansearls1@gmail.com>
…this module Written before the repairs they concern land, so the tests are pre-registered rather than reconstructed afterwards. Denominator: the 51 errors on branch head 27077d4 against origin/main 7a59ef7. (1) silent-raven-853's container-gate fix is predicted to move this module by ZERO, since that mechanism has 0 of 51 rows here and Nat resolves dag-side. Falsifier stated in both directions: a drop refutes section 10.2; a new refusal family is the v2-side hazard biting (a name resolving to the bodyless src/v2/std/nat.dag declaration, which the path refuses, so the error changes shape rather than disappearing). (2) T7's live footprint here is ONE row, not 99. Measured across three trees: 8 T7 E0308 sites at 11254b0, all in v2_std_node; 1 row on main after #8410 (E0599 partial_cmp); 1 on this head. Of the 15 E0308 that remain, NONE is T7. So 99 is a different denominator -- whole-corpus or the July census -- and scoping a repair to retire 99 sites against this module would find one. Includes an honesty note: the T7 column's first pass was a keyword scan over the JSON and it false-positived on std_cache_interface.rs:580, which is the CacheLookupResult<T> derived-Clone row. Excluded by reading the specimen -- the same failure mode section 1 warns about. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
…re where an arrow was declared (#8460) * Two emitter roots: a builtin answering a bound call, and a bare closure where an arrow was declared Subject: the materialization_carriers emitted crate. Measured 60 cargo errors today (not the 386 distinct sites of the July closure census -- different denominators; the receipt says so explicitly). Nine mechanisms, every error in exactly one. Root 1 -- a NAME question answered by the authored spelling instead of by scope. v2.std.staging's `cached_stage(lookup: fn(A) -> CacheProbe<B>, ...)` emitted `v1_rt::lookup(&x)`: the map builtin, not the parameter. Four tiers keyed on the spelling (infer's method-template, empty_map/empty_set and builtin arms; the emitter's rt table and its get/with/to_string/discriminant special forms). It errored ONLY because the arities disagreed. Where a builtin accepts what the program supplies, both realizations answer from the builtin and the program's own function is never called -- measured, not hypothesized: fixtures/builtin_shadow/method_template_shadow_specimen.dag returned 7 where its own declared function returns "SHADOWED", silently, in both realizations. It now returns SHADOWED. The fix reuses the corpus's existing shadowing authority (body_locals, call_locals_shadow_note) rather than minting a second notion: it now gates the builtin tiers too, 04_infer records the answer once as a new CallSemantics variant FunctionValueCallSemantics, and the Rust emitter consumes that variant instead of re-deciding by name. v1_interpreter eval_call moves the lexical tier above the builtins the same way, so the two realizations agree by construction. ctx.lookup_fn (module declarations) stays below the builtins exactly as before. Root 2 -- a fn declaring an arrow return emitted its closure bare, which is an unsized coercion error rather than a value of the declared type. The realization is now a target row beside the type template (rust_callable_value_wrap_template), applied when the declared return connective is Arrow and the returned expression is a lambda -- both structural conditions, no scan of the rendered string. Result: 60 -> 58. Retired 8 (E0061 x2, E0308 x5, E0282 x1); newly exposed 6 (E0599 missing Clone bound on generic params, which the two defects were hiding); net -2. The exposure is reported as a separate number rather than folded into the total. Two findings surfaced and deliberately NOT fixed, both written up: (a) regen_stage0 on clean main produces a tree that does not build (prunes v1_rt::obs_human_elapsed used by cli_run.rs; drops ItemKind's Hash derive needed by coproduct_reflection.rs). Those two files are restored after regen here; that is a declared deviation, not a claim the fixed point holds. (b) mechanism 4 (OccurrenceId materialised twice) has a 12-line repro and the obvious fix is wrong: it trades the phantom fork for an E0391 cycle because alias-RHS qualification answers from the bare-name registry -- the same spelling-vs-identity class. Implemented, measured, reverted rather than landed half-right. Receipt: docs/probes/builtin_shadow_and_callable_return_2026-08-18.md Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * Receipt: post-merge attribution on both bases (main 53 -> branch 51; same 8 retired / 6 exposed delta) Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * Board: all 51 surviving errors partitioned at mechanism grain, with two new fail-opens named Nine mechanisms, counts summing to 51, assigned from the rustc JSON rather than a keyword over rendered text. Two rows are new and matter more than their size: - an Int literal (observed_at: 0) accepted into a LogicalTime field declared NonEmptyStr where brand(...) -- rustc caught what the compile seam did not; - a nested coproduct pattern flattened to its outer discriminant, so the second arm is dead and a Conj node reaches unreachable!() at runtime while the model selects that arm. rustc reports it as a lint; it is a realization divergence. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * Mechanism 4 decided by execution: floor holds, the hole is the second refinement hop Six compiles with a positive control. String field + Int literal REFUSES and the control is green, so the below-baseline floor reading is refuted. One refinement hop (String where non_empty; String where brand) also refuses. A refined alias whose base is itself refined ACCEPTS -- reproduced in eight lines with no std import, so it is neither brand- nor std-specific. The accepting arm self-describes: 'where-refinement unenforced: predicate non_empty on Product(LogicalTime) -- non-literal value at refined position'. An Int literal at a string-refined position is classified as a non-literal value and the arm degrades to an advisory instead of refusing: DESIGN section 5's absorbing fallback, with the deficit's frequency zero by construction. where_refinement_enforcement_witness_note claims exactly this population, including refined-alias chains by name, so it is a rung-honesty failure rather than an unbuilt wall. The emitted artifact carries json!({"at": 0}) into a String field behind .expect("valid data definition"). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * Floor roster: remove the 57 identities the run reported STALE-QUARANTINE The witnesses job refused with 57 rows enrolled as expected-red that PASSED. That is the roster's designed removal path firing, not a new failure: 'a row that IS enrolled and PASSES also reds the build, naming itself and asking to be removed'. 52 of the 57 pass because of this branch -- witnesses that were red against the two emitter roots it closes now agree. The other 5 were already reporting STALE-QUARANTINE on main at 2c65eea and are removed here rather than left for a later run, since a stale row reds every branch equally. Not touched: the 102 BUDGET-REFUSED rows. They are identical on main and on this head, and the floor's own diagnostic is right that a budget refusal produces no verdict -- those rows are UNDECIDED, not passing, so removing them would be an inference rather than an observation. Population 469 -> 412. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * Name root 2's residue where the decision is made, measured not argued (review 53557) The wrap fires only when the returned expression is itself a lambda. A declared arrow return whose lambda sits in an if arm, a match arm, or a let body still emits a bare closure under Rc<dyn Fn..>. Compiled all three forms: 0 diagnostics, no wrap. So the class is NARROWED, not closed, and the PR's wording described what the wrap decides rather than full coverage. The obvious widening is wrong: the wrap applies to a rendered string and Rc::new(move if c { .. }) is not Rust. Closing it is a tail-position walk that wraps each tail LEAF -- emission-shape work with its own corpus census. The honest interim arm is a located refusal, since a bare closure at a declared-arrow return can never compile and refusing it breaks nothing that works. Recorded beside the function in 05_emit_rust.dag, not only in the receipt. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * Settle board row 1: two mechanisms, and the E0277 population is not the checkpoint-scalar dispatch Answered from the same rustc JSON at (code, primary span, label, children) grain. The E0277 reading is refuted for this closure, twice over: every one of the 16 names a TYPE PARAMETER and its children name the obligation (im::Vector<T> needing T: Clone for Debug/Serialize/Deserialize, 10; required by a bound in bind_outcome/resolve_probe, 6); and zero of the 51 errors mention Nat, Magnitude or CommutativeSemiring anywhere, while Nat here resolves to dag/std/nat.dag and emits as the i64 alias, so the checkpoint-scalar path already answers correctly and the seven Nat-typed fields in the crate are fine. silent-raven-853's gate finding is real where a v2-side declaration wins the name; it accounts for 0 of 16 in THIS denominator. Prediction: their fix moves this module's count by zero, and any movement is composition to be measured, not this row. The split that does hold is by where the missing bound belongs, not by error code (both codes appear on both sides): 1a derived impls of a generic declaration (14 = E0277 10 + E0369 2 + E0599 2, repair in trait_derive_emit) and 1b generated fn/impl signatures whose body clones a type param (14 = E0277 6 + E0599 6 + E0308 2, repair in emit_fn_def). 28. Also corrects my own PR summary line, which said "16 E0277 plus 9 E0599": it folded in the T7 partial_cmp row (board row 7) and dropped E0369 x2 and E0308 x2. The table was right; the sentence was not. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * Pre-register the two predictions, and measure what T7 actually costs this module Written before the repairs they concern land, so the tests are pre-registered rather than reconstructed afterwards. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * Row 1a exact site list at f0e7c9d, and a correction the specimens forced silent-raven-853 asked for the row 1a sites with raw diagnostics at their head. Measured on that tree (worktree at f0e7c9d, binaries built from it), not transcribed: 53 errors whole-module, and the 14 rows I had labelled 1a pulled with their children and span text. THE CORRECTION: 1a is 12, not 14. The two CacheLookupResult<T> E0599 rows are call sites (match (*lookup.clone()).clone()) inside generic fns, and rustc's own children say to restrict the type parameter -- derive(Clone) on the enum already generates impl<T: Clone> Clone. Those belong to the fn emitter (1b, deep-swift-570), which is exactly the scope boundary the two lanes were negotiating. The 12 that remain are one mechanism on two declarations: FreeMonoidUniqueState<T> and ListTailResult<T>, each with an Rc<im::Vector<T>> field under a full derive set. im::Vector<T> needs T: Clone for Debug, PartialEq, Serialize and Deserialize, while the derive expansion adds only T: <the derived trait> -- so every derive on the declaration fails at once, which is why two declarations produce twelve rows. A per-derive serde bound reaches only the serde rows and leaves Debug and PartialEq failing. Raw JSON committed beside the table so the derive invocation and offending field are locatable without reconstruction (the columns land inside the derive attribute). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> * Propagate the 1a/1b correction into the board: 12 + 16, not 14 + 14 The two CacheLookupResult<T> E0599 rows are fn-side, not derive-side; leaving the main receipt's table at 14/14 while the site-list file says 12 would be exactly the stale-copy class this receipt keeps naming. Total is unchanged at 28. …8460/#8410/#8417, maintain the mechanism partition, and publish per-landing deltas (succeeds witty-heron-413, archived) (#8490) * Re-baseline materialization_carriers on current main: 51 unmoved, verified site-for-site Re-runs the #8460 instrument against main@72676cf0be (post #8460/#8410/#8417). The error count is unchanged at 51 and every one of the 51 diagnostics was re-matched by primary span + code against #8460's mechanism board — not just the total, the full site list reproduces row-for-row, including the 1a/1b split (12/16). Also resolves the "99 E0308 sites" question for stern-fox-619: that figure is the corpus-wide 13-root census, not this module's denominator, whose live T7 footprint is 1 E0599 row (calm-lynx-547's, not E0308). Restates both pre-registered predictions against this base and repeats the standing per-SHA delta offer. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * Fix 1a/1b split in materialization_carriers re-baseline: 14/14, not 12/16 The two CacheLookupResult<T> E0599 sites (std_cache_interface.rs:564,580) were misfiled under row 1b (fn/inherent-impl signature Clone gaps). Their message text ("the method clone exists ... but its trait bounds were not satisfied") is the derived-impl-with-unsatisfiable-bound shape -- same species as row 1a's im::Vector<T> Debug/Serialize/Deserialize/PartialEq sites -- not the bare-type-parameter shape ("no method named clone found for type parameter A") that genuinely belongs in 1b. Settled by re-reading JSON message/children text for the disputed sites, not by re-asserting either summary. Corrects to 14/14, matching #8460 Sec10.3 exactly. Also: flags row 7 (T7) ownership as stale -- calm-lynx-547 is archived -- rather than carrying forward "owned, untouched," and states loudly that T7's local yield in this module (1 row) reshapes stern-fox-619's repair framing: the value is the corpus-wide class fix, not this module's board. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * materialization_carriers: hold 1a/1b at provisional pending executed evidence; add fast_probe.sh The 564/580 CacheLookupResult<T> row assignment is contested (smart-ram-730) on mechanism grounds: derive(Clone) already emits a conditional bound, so the earlier "derived-impl missing bound" reading may be misreading caller-signature error text. deep-swift-570's diff-scope claim (emit_fn_def only, trait_derive_emit.dag untouched) proves their repair is signature-only, not that a signature-only repair clears both errors -- held provisional pending their CI run's executed result rather than corrected a third time on prose. Adds docs/probes/fast_probe.sh: a fast single-module iteration probe reusing the established instrument's authorities (render_cssl_probe_lib_cargo_toml.sh, gunbc/cssl_assemble invocation shape) rather than re-deriving them. Implements stale-binary-SHA refusal (content-hash of src/v1/**+Cargo.toml/lock, stamped at build time, hard refusal on mismatch), single-module emission into a stable per-module target dir, cargo check --message-format=json for iteration, dedup by (code, primary span, cause signature), and a before/after delta at (code, primary span) grain that carries full children text -- dropping children was exactly what caused today's two 1a/1b misclassifications. --imports-only skips the cargo step entirely for a cheap resolve/emit-only check. cargo build --release --lib remains reserved for milestone receipts via the existing curated_cargo_probe_one.sh. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * materialization_carriers: settle 1a/1b by execution, flag redundant-clone finding as open deep-swift-570's executed CI result (real cargo build against both pushed head 561bf11 and origin/main) shows the two CacheLookupResult<T> E0599 sites at std_cache_interface.rs:564,580 are byte-identical/unchanged on both sides -- outcome three of smart-ram-730's three-outcome framework. Proposition B is false: a signature-only repair does not clear these errors, so 1a stands, no longer provisional. A distinct, unsettled finding surfaces alongside it: the emitted match scrutinees are (*lookup.clone()).clone() / (*existing.clone()).clone() -- a redundant Rc-deref-then-clone in match lowering. Neither a derive fix (1a) nor a signature-bound fix (1b) plausibly reaches it. Documented as open per deep-swift-570's explicit request not to reclassify into either bucket while unsettled. Also reconciles row 7 (T7) ownership: smart-ram-730 has assigned it to stern-fox-619, superseding the stale calm-lynx-547/archived/unowned note. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * Remove fast_probe.sh per review 53640: unmarked scaffold debt on mainline review 53640 (PR #8490, REQUEST_CHANGES) correctly identified fast_probe.sh as a net-new dissolution obligation with no Scaffold/dissolve-on marker and no operator verdict (DESIGN.md's 2026-08-10 §5 ruling), a parallel representation of curated_cargo_probe_one.sh, embedded Python-as-shell- heredoc, and a stale-binary hash whose coverage claim (src/v1/** only) doesn't match what cargo build -p v1-compiler actually compiles. All four findings hold on inspection. This session can't self-issue the operator verdict DESIGN.md requires to land it as an approved scaffold, so per the review's own named fallback and DESIGN §5's shell->intent rule, the compliant route is deletion before merge (branch-local canary, not committed mainline debt). The two genuine findings the tool surfaced (a cargo-workspace-membership silent-zero, and branch-base-vs-main drift invalidating a naive site diff) are preserved as prose in §8 of the rebaseline doc for any future lane that builds a real probe. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * materialization_carriers: re-baseline at dd9c230 (six commits, incl. #8461), 51/51 unmoved site-for-site Publishes the delta smart-ram-730 requested after six main commits landed since the 72676cf baseline, including #8461 (TargetReferenceLayer indirection/sharing decomposition, flagged emitter-adjacent). Every one of the 51 sites was matched individually against the existing row table, not just the aggregate histogram. Confirms #8486's witness migration (dag/test/claim) is non-impacting to this board (the instrument counts cargo diagnostics, not witness/floor counts). Adopts the SHA-in-headline convention for future receipts and records why the requested same-base-refusal capability isn't being built as a second hand-shell probe. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * curated_cargo_probe_one.sh: add same-base refusal (PROBE_EXPECT_BASE_SHA) smart-ram-730 requested a sibling to the stale-binary check that refuses a stale comparison BASE — two runs being diffed must share a git tree or the comparison is confident nonsense, the same failure shape a stale binary produces. Extends the single surviving probe authority (not a second script) with an opt-in pre-build guard: when PROBE_EXPECT_BASE_SHA is set, refuse before any emit/build work if `git rev-parse HEAD` disagrees, naming both SHAs. No flag, mode, or override arm — absence of the var means no comparison was declared, never "proceed anyway". Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> * curated_cargo_probe_one.sh: name the same-base refusal's rung honestly Per smart-ram-730's review: the check is mechanically preventable only when a caller sets PROBE_EXPECT_BASE_SHA, not mechanically preventable outright — an unarmed caller gets no protection and that failure is silent, so the check's existence must not be mistaken for coverage. Names the next-rung trigger (derive the expected base from this worktree's merge-base against origin/main instead of requiring it be declared) so it's a tracked trigger, not a stall. No behavior change. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> --------- Co-authored-by: Brian Searls <briansearls1@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Summary
This PR does not delete
v1_interpreter.rs, and the title said it did. The work item isdelete v1_interpreter.rs; the ruling on it is that no Y exists yet — the emitted v2 evaluator doesnot compile — so DESIGN §3's frozen-X carve-out applies literally ("the v1 seed before any candidate
image exists"). Deleting now would force a rebuilt mini-interpreter, the one thing the terminal
direction forbids. The freeze is intact and checked: 38 host-builtin dispatch arms, unchanged.
What builds Y is driving the model↔realization forks to zero until that evaluator compiles. This PR
takes the first one.
The defect
A Rust
TypeCheckpointrow was keyed on the bare authored leaf name, so two declarations sharinga spelling received one answer.
v2.std.node.HashisFnv1a64Structural, a record whosedigestfield is
String where lower_hex_16and whose public constructors are deleted precisely so thatrefinement is its construction wall. The bare
"Hash"row targetedv1_rt::Hash, which ispub type Hash = Stringin the seed — so the carrier rendered away as a bareStringalias, and thewall with it. A name-keyed spelling row can silently demote a §4b construction rung with no
diagnostic anywhere.
What lands
extdeps.languages.rust.type_identity,gunbc.rust_realization):DeclarationRef → RustTypeIdentity → (extdeps) spelling. Adeclaring-module column on the extdeps row was refused as a layer inversion — a cited upstream
authority cannot answer which dag module declares
Int.RustTypeIdentityhas three arms becauseVec<u8>is a base applied to an argument, not a name; the predecessor stored it as a string andtherefore could not express arity.
Hashrow is retired, not rebound. A census finds exactly onetype Hashdeclaration inthe corpus and no declaration legitimately realizes as
v1_rt::Hash; every surviving occurrenceof that spelling is inside a string literal in generated
v1_rt.rstext.earlier commit — see below.
map_key_alias_hop_gap_note— a measured gap, attempted and reverted.Measured, not reasoned
Emitting the
v2.compiler.05_evalclosure, counting distinct primary error spans:Hashalias0cd36b5a757b(pre-cut)pub type Hash = v1_rt::Hash;pub type Hash = Rc<Fnv1a64Structural>;The one site added in B is not a regression: bytes at
v2_compiler_eval.rs:591-597are identicalacross arms, and arm A carried E0308s inside that same function. rustc does not run borrowck on a
function with type errors, so fixing the types unmasked a pre-existing missing-
move. A type errorsuppresses borrowck — "new" borrow errors after a type fix are usually unmasked, not caused.
Two things I got wrong, corrected here rather than softened
The evidence I cited did not execute. An earlier commit flipped an assertion in
src/v1/tests/claim/and called it a permanent regression control. That tree is in no workflow:the floor runs source roots
dagandsrc/v2only, and a run log with 619v2.testrows carrieszero
v1.testsrows (positive control confirms the search works). 17 files / 127 test fns sitthere unexecuted. The note it lived in had itself been written to repair a false citation — the first
repair moved assertions out of a
#[cfg(test)]block CI never compiles and into a directory CI neverdiscovers. Evidence that cannot fail is not evidence, whichever way it fails to run.
The alias hop's obvious fix is wrong. Map-key derive propagation misses type aliases (4 real
sites). Following every alias RHS drags
type Int = AbelianGroup<...>andtype Nat = CommutativeSemiring<...>into key positions — both carryRc<dyn Fn>— givingregen_divergence_count=2. That refusal is a false positive of this lane's own shape: the deriveanalysis reads declared structure while the emitter renders realized structure. A proxy was
available (bare-record vs applied-template alias) that goes green on every specimen measured; it is
refused in-tree with its reasoning, because it traces a property nobody claims is the real one.
Test plan
test.claim.hash_checkpoint_retired_witness— behavioural (compiles a module, reads emittedbytes; requires
struct Hash, forbidsv1_rt::Hashandtype Hash = String). Proven bothdirections by execution: FAILS against a binary built with the row present, PASSES at 71ms
without it. The red arm was a real binary, not a planted mutation.
regen_stage0 --verify→regen_divergence_count=0at head.cargo check --message-format=jsonper arm.CI
Red is inherited and this PR is 10 failures better than its own base (merge-base is
3abc17b54c): main 40, PR 30, with thecompute_board16 a byte-identical name set on both. Those16 are fixed upstream since; the ~9
ci_healrows are in main's knownbudget_refusedpopulation.Holding the single main merge until the expected-red roster fix lands, since a merge resets reviews.

v1_interpreter.rs(frozen, 38 arms, no new rows);cli_run.rs(tidy-gull'sregion, dispositioned by #8286); the identity-keyed
lookup_checkpointcut and the alias hop, bothblocked on the same thing — declaration identity reaching the type renderer; the missing-
moveclass.
