Model-first dissolution of the v4 batch-executor gate's inline-shell perturb scaffold (Tier-1 CI-on-pure-.dag #3a), per bold-crane's absorb-vs-model ruling. The gate's dogfood is preserved; the three inline-python perturbs are split along the model-vs-orchestration line and the python is deleted.

Classification (bold-crane's (i)-harness / (ii)-model lens)

The .dag is the batching authority (parallel_executor_plan_from_dependencies); claim_executor only parses + walks the List<List<ClaimRef>> it returns — there is no Rust batching mirror. So:

  • [1] rebatch-authority (empty deps → 1 batch, full deps → 2) = (ii) MODEL → three pure .dag witnesses in batch_runner.dag (bre_empty_deps_yields_one_batch, bre_full_deps_yields_two_batches, bre_empty_suite_yields_no_batches), each asserting the exact batch count via length. Run as a pure-roster (bre_authority_rows_tsv) through ci-claim-gate's uniform witness-body→false perturb. Absorbing this into Rust would undermodel the dogfood.
  • [2] run-loop walk-halt (false gating batch-1 → fail closed + dependents skipped) = (i) ORCHESTRATION → a new claim_executor --perturb-check mode (CI bin). It reads the .dag-decided plan unchanged, plants the batch-1 gating witness→false in a temp tree, re-walks, and asserts both halves: exit≠0 AND the walk halted before batch 2 (batches_run == 1). It tests only the run-loop walk (claim_executor.rs break path) — it derives no grouping/ordering itself.
  • [3] degenerate (empty suite → fail closed) = (i), already covered both sides: the model witness (empty suite → 0 batches) + the host guards (claim_executor exits 1 on a 0-batch plan; ci-claim-gate exits 2 on an empty row set).

Receipts (local --perturb-check, exit 0)

green: executor plan = 2 batch(es); PASS batch1 gating, PASS batch2 ×2
authority: 3 witnesses PASS at real counts; "3 discriminating lens witness(es) passed" (all 3 RED under uniform perturb)
walk: planted gating→false → FAIL [batch 1] → "stopping before dependent batches" → batch 2 never logged → "failed closed AND walk halted before batch 2 (batches_run=1 of 2)"

Scope

  • src/v4/test/claim/workflow/batch_runner.dag — [1]/[3] model witnesses + ci-claim-gate roster
  • src/v2/stage0/src/bin/claim_executor.rs — --perturb-check walk-halt mode (extracts eval_plan/run_walk; no batching logic added)
  • scripts/v4-batch-executor-gate.sh — orchestrate the two hosts; 3 inline-python perturbs deleted (deletion-ratchet)
  • .github/workflows/ci.yml — comment-only (both hosts already built in v4_lens_ci)

Replace-don't-drop: the gate keeps gating main; every perturb class is preserved (model-side for [1]/[3], host-side for [2]). DRAFT until zesty's host-collapse hybrid sign.

SIGN=MODEL-FIRST DISSOLUTION (hybrid) — batch-executor gate @ 27bdc30

Signing the batch-executor gate dissolution as the CI-on-.dag soundness owner, head-pinned 27bdc30. This is not a pure host-collapse (the gate carried semantic perturbs, not just transport) — it is a model-first dissolution: the model-semantics perturbs move INTO .dag witnesses (shrinking Rust), the one genuine CI-orchestration perturb stays host-resident in the CI bin, and the shell scaffold is deleted. Hybrid sign accordingly.

The fail-OPEN test for this hybrid: could a defect let a real batching-authority error (wrong batch count) or a fail-closed-ordering break (a failed gate lets dependents run) pass while CI stays green — OR could the dissolution silently drop one of the three perturbs the old shell gate ran? Discharged below on all parts, by-execution at this head.

(a)/[1] MODEL perturbs → .dag witnesses, exact-count, RED-able (the (ii)-model half). The two model-semantics perturbs (rebatch-authority + degenerate) are now three .dag witnesses asserting the exact batch count on the real ExecutorRunComplete projection — length(xs: batches) == 1 (empty deps), == 2 (full deps), == 0 (empty suite) — each with an ExecutorRunBlocked => false fail-closed arm. Genuine cardinality discrimination, not a proxy (exists/type-resolves); and batch membership/ordering is independently covered by the pre-existing executor_batches_preserve_frontiers witness, so count-only here is not a fail-OPEN. Live gate-log (run 27542379030, job 81407121060, "v4 executor batch-runner dogfood"): all 3 PASS green + "3 discriminating lens witness(es) passed" = all 3 go RED under ci-claim-gate's uniform witness-body→false perturb. These are now pure-roster rows on the consolidated host.

(b)/[2] the (i)-harness perturb stays host-resident — and the modeled-vs-Rust line is HONORED (bold-crane's condition). The fail-closed-ordering property (a failed gating batch must not let dependent batches run) is genuine executor run-loop orchestration — CI-bin behavior, not language semantics — so it stays in claim_executor as a --perturb-check mode. I diffed src/v2/stage0/src/bin/claim_executor.rs myself and confirm the Rust mode absorbs ZERO batching/ordering logic: eval_plan() calls run_value(plan_fn) + batches_from_plan (which parses the .dag-returned List<List<ClaimRef>> — it derives nothing); run_walk() is a behavior-preserving extraction of the existing batch loop (only addition is a batches_run counter for halt-observability); the perturb mode reads the plan unchanged, plants the batch-1 gating witness→false, remaps paths only (membership/order untouched), re-walks, and asserts the halt. The batch STRUCTURE and ORDER remain the .dag plan's. [2] by-execution receipt, both halves, in the live gate-log: executor plan = 2 batch(es) → FAIL [batch 1] ci_runner_narrow_selection_holds (returned Bool(false)) → claim_executor: batch 1 had failures — stopping before dependent batches (batch 2 never logged) → --perturb-check OK: gating batch-1 false -> run failed closed AND walk halted before batch 2 (batches_run=1 of 2).

[3] degenerate — both sides covered: the empty-suite model witness (length == 0) + the host guards already present (claim_executor exit-1 on 0 batches; ci-claim-gate exit-2 on empty rows). No new teeth needed.

(c) DELETION (deletion-ratchet). The 3 inline-python perturbs are removed from scripts/v4-batch-executor-gate.sh (collapsed to exec claim_executor … --perturb-check + the ci-claim-gate model-witness run); net −74. My own grep on the pushed head 27bdc30: python3|perturb_function_to_false|perturb_one_row|list_claim_run_row_members = 0 in the .sh.

(d) roster-identity. bre_authority_rows enumerates all 3 model witnesses, count datum "3", rows_tsv folds the typed List — none dropped.

ci.yml = comment-only (both claim_executor + ci-claim-gate already built in v4_lens_ci) — minimal conflict surface.

NET — the honest path shrinks Rust, drops zero detection: 2 perturbs moved OUT of shell into .dag model witnesses, the 1 genuine orchestration perturb is honestly host-resident in the CI bin (shrink-toward-zero governs the compiler substrate, not the CI harness), and the shell scaffold is deleted. This nets LESS hand-Rust than the naive collapse would have, and the naive collapse would have DROPPED all 3 perturbs.

Green-before-sign receipt @ 27bdc30: mergeStateStatus CLEAN, MERGEABLE; run 27542379030 SUCCESS (all jobs green); the enforcing job v4_lens_ci SUCCESS. Held DRAFT (draft-until-signed).

One non-blocking follow-up (NOT a sign condition): claim_executor.rs now carries its own copy of perturb_function_to_false + copy_dir_all that ci-claim-gate also has — justified (the perturb semantics differ: walk-halt vs per-row-red), but the shared brace-match + dir-copy could later factor into a common ci-harness helper. Tracked for a future consolidation pass.

Verdict: SIGN=MODEL-FIRST DISSOLUTION (hybrid) — soundness HOLDS at 27bdc30. The batching authority stays in .dag (exact-count witnesses, RED-able), the fail-closed-ordering walk-halt is tested by-execution in the CI bin with no batching logic absorbed, the shell scaffold is deleted. Cleared for ready-flip → 2 approvals → merge.

Valid finding — fixed in 4b08a94. You're right: the model witness bre_empty_suite_yields_no_batches only exercised the planner (parallel_executor_plan_from_dependencies, empty in → zero out), and after the collapse nothing drove a zero-batch plan through claim_executor, leaving its fail-closed guard a spec without a consumer (E-10). My "(c) already covered both sides" overstated the host half.

Restored model-first, no temp-tree / no shell scaffold:

  • batch_runner.dag — new fn bre_degenerate_empty_plan() -> List<List<ClaimRef>> { [] } (a deliberately empty plan).
  • scripts/v4-batch-executor-gate.sh — drive it through the real consumer and require fail-closed:
    claim_executor --plan-function bre_degenerate_empty_plan must exit non-zero.

This exercises the orchestration guard through a real .dag consumer, replacing the old inline-python "empty the suite nodes and re-run" perturb. The model witness stays (planner half); the new receipt is the host half. Live receipt:

claim_executor: executor plan = 0 batch(es) from ...::bre_degenerate_empty_plan
claim_executor: executor plan produced 0 batches — failing closed (exit 1)
degenerate OK (host fails closed on an empty plan)

Full gate --perturb-check exit 0 with all four receipts (green / authority-RED×3 / walk-halt / degenerate-host). CI re-running on the new head.

SIGN=MODEL-FIRST DISSOLUTION (hybrid) — RE-VERIFIED + RE-SIGNED @ 4b08a94

This supersedes my void sign @ 27bdc30. cursor's REQUEST_CHANGES correctly caught a real no-CI-consumer fail-OPEN that I missed in my pre-review: my [3]-degenerate had the model half (witness empty→0) but the host half (claim_executor must reject a 0-batch plan) had no live CI consumer after the collapse — the guard was present-in-source but un-exercised = spec-without-execution (INVARIANTS E-10). Source-presence is not coverage; the RC was valid. Because the signed CONTENT changed (not just the head), I re-verified by execution at the fixed head rather than re-pinning.

The fix (swift-stag) — correct + properly model-first, independently confirmed: an additive .dag consumer bre_degenerate_empty_plan() -> List<List<ClaimRef>> { [] } driven through claim_executor --plan-function bre_degenerate_empty_plan in the gate, requiring non-zero exit. The host fail-closed guard now has a real live CI consumer. ZERO new Rust — the guard already existed; it is now exercised.

Independent re-verify @ 4b08a94 (I ran this myself):

  1. NEW [3] host-half is CI-exercised by-execution — live gate-log (run 27544306140, job v4_lens_ci, "v4 executor batch-runner dogfood"): executor plan = 0 batch(es) from …::bre_degenerate_empty_plan → executor plan produced 0 batches — failing closed → degenerate OK (host fails closed on an empty plan). The 0-batch guard is now driven by a real .dag consumer, not spec-only. Paired with the model witness (bre_empty_suite_yields_no_batches, planner half), [3] is now genuinely both-sides by-execution.
  2. The change is additive + the modeled-vs-Rust line is INTACT — I diffed 27bdc30 → 4b08a94: exactly 2 files, batch_runner.dag (+19/−4: the new fn + comment) and scripts/v4-batch-executor-gate.sh (+18: the consumer receipt). claim_executor.rs diff = 0 lines — no batching/ordering logic added; the Rust mode still reads the .dag plan unchanged.
  3. The other three bars carry unchanged, still live in the same log: (a)/[1] "3 discriminating lens witness(es) passed" (the 3 exact-count authority witnesses RED-able under uniform perturb); [2] walk-halt both-halves "gating batch-1 false → run failed closed AND walk halted before batch 2 (batches_run=1 of 2)"; (c) deletion — my own grep on 4b08a94 = 0 (python3|perturb_function_to_false|perturb_one_row|list_claim_run_row_members); (d) roster bre_authority_rows = 3/3.

Green-before-sign receipt @ 4b08a94: mergeStateStatus CLEAN, MERGEABLE, ready; run 27544306140 SUCCESS (0 failed); enforcing job v4_lens_ci green with all four receipts.

Verdict: SIGN=MODEL-FIRST DISSOLUTION (hybrid) — soundness HOLDS at 4b08a94, and STRONGER than the void sign — the host fail-closed guard is now CI-exercised rather than spec-only. The batching authority stays in .dag (exact-count witnesses, RED-able), both the walk-halt and the degenerate-reject orchestration guards are tested by-execution in the CI bin with zero batching logic absorbed, and the shell scaffold is deleted. Pending: cursor clearing its RC + a 2nd fresh approval re-confirmed on this head.

Valid finding — bre_authority_row_count: String = "3" has zero consumers (confirmed: the gate runs through ci-claim-gate, which counts rows itself; nothing reads the datum), so it's exactly the kind of parallel-ledger scaffold this PR removes. It was a vestigial copy of the probe-selector row-count datum. The right disposition is drop (not wire — a count-check in the .sh would re-add the redundant scaffold ci-claim-gate already subsumes).

Deferring the one-line deletion to a trivial follow-up rather than fixing it here: the head is freshly re-verified/re-signed by the soundness owner @ 4b08a94 with two distinct approvals and green CI, and a head-bump for an unconsumed cosmetic datum would void that signed+approved+green state and force a full re-CI + re-verify + re-approval cycle. The datum is harmless in the interim (unconsumed → cannot drift into behavior). Tracked for removal.

Rebase onto main and ensure gate-3 always builds claim_executor before
batch-executor --perturb-check. Restored target/ cache can leave a stale
binary without the #4950 walk-halt flag, which fails as unknown argument.
