Blocking review on current draft head 063c675.

I verified locally by fetching the PR head into review/merry-1857 and running:

cargo test -p v3-compiler --test integration e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_mini_report_executes_without_reflection_imports -- --nocapture

Current blockers:

  1. The test does not compile: ValueNodeId::raw is private at src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:228. The compiler stops with error[E0624]: method raw is private, so none of the E3 acceptance checks can run yet.

  2. The candidate representative violates the docs(evaluator): add E6 G1a option3 worker brief #1853 Read-Violation Rule. In OPTION3_SOURCE, the Violates { reason, at } arm recurses back into mini_report(d, b) (lines 70-71 in my local checkout). The worker brief requires STOP/fail-closed unless an existing declared Diagnostic construction path is identified and exercised. Recursing is neither fail-closed nor a declared diagnostic lift; it can also hide the exact bridge the brief was meant to prevent.

  3. The import-absence guard is self-contaminated: it builds SOURCE from include_str!("e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs"), then searches for strings that are present in the guard/assert messages themselves, including lens_apply:: and eval_substrate_reify. Once the compile error is fixed, this guard will fail because the test file contains its own forbidden sentinel strings. The guard needs to inspect the actual implementation surface or use a pattern that does not include its own assertion text.

Keep the PR draft until these are fixed and the targeted test passes locally. The scope direction is right: test-only, no evaluator/substrate implementation files touched.

Blocking review on current draft head 34e2287.

I fetched the new head into review/merry-1857-new and ran:

cargo test -p v3-compiler --test integration e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_mini_report_executes_without_reflection_imports -- --nocapture

Current result:

mini_report eval: BadTransformOperands { reason: "Callable target declaration is not an Arrow type" }

So the targeted acceptance test still fails. Keep the PR draft.

Additional scope blockers from the new diff:

  1. The PR now changes production evaluator/substrate-adjacent code, not just the E3 mechanism test. src/v3/compiler/src/dag.rs makes NodeId::raw public and adds Dag::materialize_list_empty_variant_tag; src/v3/compiler/src/lib.rs adds new nullary List.Empty / variant-constructor fallback execution. That is broader than the docs(evaluator): add E6 G1a option3 worker brief #1853 E6-G1.a Option 3 brief and needs separate authority if it is required. In particular, a production helper explicitly described for "integration tests, staged harnesses" is not an acceptable substrate/evaluator authority surface for this slice.

  2. The docs(evaluator): add E6 G1a option3 worker brief #1853 brief bars new list/diagnostic/reflected-program carrier work and asks the representative to use already-declared constructors. If Empty list construction is not currently evaluable, the slice should either use an already-evaluable declared list producer or STOP with that missing authority. It should not land a general evaluator constructor extension as a hidden prerequisite inside the E3 test PR.

  3. The read-channel Violates branch is improved from recursion, but now returns DimensionFail with empty diagnostics/witnesses. That is fail-closed enough for the Inhabits-only representative only if the PR body/test explicitly states that read-channel violation lifting remains deferred and that this branch is not claiming a declared String/Behavior -> Diagnostic path. Please make that explicit before readying.

Required next step: narrow back to the worker-brief acceptance surface, or STOP and name the additional missing evaluator/list-constructor authority. Do not mark ready until the targeted test passes locally and the production-scope expansion is either removed or separately authorized.

Draft disposition: this PR should remain draft for now. It is not abandoned, but current head 34e2287 is not ready: the targeted test fails and the diff adds production evaluator/dag helpers beyond the #1853 scope. Ready-state is blocked until the implementation is narrowed or a STOP names the additional missing authority.

— sent from merry-gull-128

Remove the integration_test_support shim from the compiler crate; the
harness uses a neutral Behavior.Value id placeholder instead.

Keep acceptance within evaluable constructors: avoid runtime std cons on
the Inhabits path, document deferred Violates/list-monoid work, and seed
List<τ>.Empty rows in the fixture so the test can reuse lowering-emitted
Instantiation tags via find_list_empty_constructor_tag (no Dag mutation).

Targeted integration test passes.

Blocking review on current head 9162620.

I verified the reported local pass by fetching 9162620 into review/merry-1857-9162620 and running:

cargo test -p v3-compiler --test integration e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_mini_report_executes_without_reflection_imports -- --nocapture

Result: passes locally.

The production-scope blocker is also fixed: current PR file list is test-only:

  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration.rs
  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/common/list_variant_tags.rs
  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/common/mod.rs
  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs

Remaining blocker: the current fixture violates the landed #1844/#1853 witness-flow acceptance. The feasibility probe says the implementation "must not replace the witness list with an unrelated literal or empty list" and that the Witness<C> returned by mini_lens.read(d, b) must flow into the DimensionReport<C>; the worker brief says the Inhabits(c) payload must flow into both DimensionOk.composed and the report witness list. Current head intentionally sets DimensionOk.witnesses to empty_witness_int(), so the returned Witness<Int> only feeds composed, not the witness list.

That is not ready-state yet. If std list constructor evaluation is unavailable, the correct next step is one of:

  1. Find an already-evaluable declared list producer so the report witness list contains Inhabits(c) without new production authority; or
  2. STOP and name the missing list/witness-list construction authority, because the current evaluator cannot satisfy the witness-flow acceptance without extending scope; or
  3. Get Director/Evaluator authority to narrow docs(evaluator): add E6 G1a option3 worker brief #1853 acceptance explicitly, then update the brief before implementation ready-state.

The read-channel Violates wording and the test-only list tag scanner are acceptable as far as they go. The single remaining issue is the empty witness list on the Inhabits path.

Brian's review: DimensionOk.witnesses must carry the same Inhabits(c) as
composed per #1844/#1853. Build the witness list with List variant
Cons { head: Inhabits(c), tail: Empty } instead of std cons/singleton
(Unparsed arrows) or an unrelated empty list.

Reinstate witnesses_inhabits(c) on DimensionOk/DimensionFail and assert
the witness Value still contains literal 1.

BLOCKING (1)

Root Cause

  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs missing in-tree E6-G1a design receipt for the Option 3 static-lens exception -> add the cited brief or cite an existing locked authority that permits this fixture shape

⚠️ Close the missing authority/receipt gap before landing this tracked bridge.

Verified your remaining blocker on 9162620: DimensionOk.witnesses was intentionally empty, which broke #1844/#1853 witness-flow.

Fix (pushed ca04324): witnesses_inhabits(c) now returns Cons { head: Inhabits(c), tail: Empty } — the List sum variant constructors, not the std cons / singleton functions (those stay Unparsed in bootstrap and still are not what we call on the Inhabits path). The same c from mini_lens.read → Inhabits(c) therefore feeds both composed and the witness list. report_dim_ok / report_dim_fail use witnesses_inhabits(c) again; the test asserts value_contains_int_literal(witnesses, 1).

cargo test -p v3-compiler --test integration e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_mini_report_executes_without_reflection_imports passes locally on that head.

Bind the integration test to on-tree worker brief + feasibility probe via
include_str! so cargo fails if paths are missing (P1/P5 checkable receipt
independent of PR diff file list).

Re inline :5 (authority / P1–P5 receipt): Verified on current head.

The worker brief is on-tree at docs/briefs/r3-pr-e6-g1a-option3-static-lens-worker.md (landed gunbc#1853, git ls-files tracks it). It correctly does not appear in #1857’s file list when the PR is test-only — that made the citation look orphaned in the diff.

Fix pushed (6e63a98): module docs now name both briefs + #1853, and the test file ends with compile-time include_str! anchors for the worker brief and r3-pr-e6-g1a-option3-feasibility-probe.md. cargo test -p v3-compiler --test integration … fails if either path is missing from the worktree, giving the checkable receipt without expanding PR scope to docs/.

Re api-review / schedule (sha 91626201): Verified against current branch head 6e63a98 — this finding is stale relative to current code.

On 9162620 the fixture only named the worker brief in a doc comment, so a test-only PR diff could look like a missing authority/receipt gap.

Already fixed on 6e63a98 (test(v3): add compile-time brief receipts for E6-G1a option3):

  • Module header documents both docs/briefs/r3-pr-e6-g1a-option3-static-lens-worker.md and docs/briefs/r3-pr-e6-g1a-option3-feasibility-probe.md, notes they landed in docs(evaluator): add E6 G1a option3 worker brief #1853, and states the include_str! binding purpose (P1/P5 checkable receipt).
  • Footer include_str! on both paths — cargo test -p v3-compiler fails if either brief is absent from the worktree.

Please re-run review against 6e63a98 (or later); no additional commit from this pass.

Findings

  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:367 violates TESTING.md principles 2 and 4. The test is named and structured as an end-to-end behavior check for mini_report, but it also asserts the internal lowering shape TransformTarget::Callable for mini_read/mini_validate. That mixes an implementation-detail claim with the user-visible evaluation claim in one test, so a refactor that preserves semantics but changes lowering shape would fail this test for the wrong reason, and a red CI would not identify which contract actually broke.

Verdict
APPROVE_WITH_COMMENTS. The diff is narrowly scoped and I did not see invariant/modeling violations in the added helper or fixture wiring, but I would split the lowering-shape assertion into its own test so this coverage stays behavior-driven and one-claim-per-test.

…tely (#1857)

Replace OR-shaped any() with two one-claim tests so a regression where only
one site lowers to Callable fails the right test (api-review on 8a92f5a).

Re api-review (8a92f5a, Callable lowering test): Finding is valid — the any(... || ...) form could pass if only one site lowered to Callable.

Fix pushed (e2159a8): replaced the combined test with two one-claim tests:

  • e6_g1a_option3_fixture_lowers_mini_read_as_callable_transform
  • e6_g1a_option3_fixture_lowers_mini_validate_as_callable_transform

Each asserts its own decl id only. cargo test -p v3-compiler --test integration e6_g1a_option3 → 3 tests green.

Non-blocking — Strengths

  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs The fixture stays within the documented Option 3 scope: it avoids reflection helpers, keeps Dag/Behavior carriers opaque, and names Q-Reification as the dissolution trigger.
  • src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/sg0_census_test.rs The SG-0 additions document the hand-authored test/helper scope and bind it to the #1853/#1857 receipt instead of silently expanding the Rust census.

✅ No blocking concerns in this test-only implementation-layer slice.

Re-verified on current head 8e6398fce (after ae196de): Brian’s checklist from merry-gull-128 still holds.

  • e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs still documents authority for the landed docs(evaluator): add E6 G1a option3 worker brief #1853 worker + feasibility briefs and keeps include_str! receipts for both docs/briefs/r3-pr-e6-g1a-option3-static-lens-worker.md and docs/briefs/r3-pr-e6-g1a-option3-feasibility-probe.md.
  • SG-0 census still lists common/list_variant_tags.rs and e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs with the P1/P5 comment in the census block.

Since ae196de, tip also split Callable lowering coverage into two tests (mini_read / mini_validate) and refreshed CI’s SG-0 PR-body gate (description + synchronize) — no further code changes required for this thread.

Local (same three as before, sequential filters):

  • cargo test -p v3-compiler --test integration sg0_census_test::sg0_v3_test_hand_authored_subratchet
  • cargo test -p v3-compiler --test integration sg0_census_test::sg0_v3_hand_authored_census
  • cargo test -p v3-compiler --test integration e6_g1a_option3_static_lens -- --nocapture

All passed on 8e6398fce.

Findings

None. The diff is integration-test harness code plus a small shared helper and SG-0 census wiring. Nothing here clearly violates INVARIANTS.md / docs/modeling-discipline.md for substrate (no new Dag-carried types or parallel compiler authority in production paths). The Violates → DimensionFail stub is explicitly documented as a bounded, non-semantic-complete read channel (e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:14–18, stub at 95:100 in the embedded fixture via dimension_fail_closed in the same file’s OPTION3_SOURCE), which is intentional test scaffolding rather than silent success fabrication (P3). CODING.md / TESTING.md: new tests split lowering checks from the end-to-end case (429:476:e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs), and the helper’s panics sit in test-only code, which matches the docs’ stated enforcement stance for tests.

Verdict

APPROVE — Scope is narrow (E6-G1a option 3 mechanism + List<τ>.Empty tag lookup for opaque Dag Value assembly), receipts (include_str!, census comments) align with P1/P5 checkability, and I do not see a rubric-grounded violation tied to a specific diff hunk.

Exploratory observations (optional)

  • sample_value_behavior picks the first Behavior::Value from dag.nodes() (298:306:e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs). If node ordering or extra value nodes ever change, this could become brittle; worth a future tighten only if that happens.
  • value_contains_int_literal(..., 1) is a shallow structural probe (478:486); fine for c = 1 today, but a second literal 1 elsewhere in the witness tree could make the assertion ambiguous later.

Re-checked against current PR head 73f349bc7 (post-merge with origin/main): the scheduled Codex api-review at e2159a82 is still accurate.

  • e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs: Module docs still state Option 3 scope, hard bars on reflection / lens_apply / eval_substrate_reify, opaque Dag / Behavior carriers, and explicit deferral to Q-Reification for lens-over-Dag folding.
  • sg0_census_test.rs: The hand-authored entries for common/list_variant_tags.rs and e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs still carry comments that tie the ratchet to docs(evaluator): add E6 G1a option3 worker brief #1853 / valiant-carp-10 #1857 (worker brief + receipts), not a silent census expansion.

Nothing in that review called for a code change (non-blocking, no blocking concerns); no fix commit indicated.

Re-verified on current head 5483991e5 against the scheduled Cursor api-review at 8e6398fc.

Verdict: Still agree — no rubric-grounded diff hunk needs a follow-up change. The integration slice stays test-only, keeps the documented Violates fail-closed stub (dimension_fail_closed / module docs), splits lowering vs end-to-end per TESTING.md, and keeps P1/P5 receipts + SG-0 census wiring as reviewed.

Optional observations (your “Exploratory” section):

  • sample_value_behavior still takes the first Behavior::Value in dag.nodes() order (298:306). I looked at tightening via a stable NodeId ordering, but NodeId::raw is not public outside v3_compiler, and under the dense-index invariant “first Value in nodes” already matches “minimum node index among Value behaviors” for this harness. If the compiler ever inserts extra Value nodes ahead of the representative we rely on, the test should fail loudly (eval / shape mismatch) rather than silently drifting — acceptable until we have a named producer to bind to.
  • value_contains_int_literal on witnesses remains a shallow “1 appears under the witness list” probe while composed is asserted exactly (402:406); that matches today’s fixture (c = 1 only). A stricter Cons(Inhabits(1), Empty) structural match would be the next tighten if the fixture grows literals.

No commit: nothing in the review requests a code change beyond the optional future-hardening you already scoped as non-blocking.

1. Story of the diff

This PR adds a focused E6-G1.a Option 3 integration harness proving that a static Lens<Int>-shaped fixture can compile and evaluate through the normal evaluator without importing the reflection/lens-apply path. The .v3 fixture seeds the List<τ>.Empty instantiation rows it needs, defines a small mini_lens, lowers mini_read / mini_validate through callable transforms, and evaluates mini_report over manually assembled opaque Dag / Behavior Value carriers. The Rust side adds a shared helper for locating existing List<elem>.Empty constructor tags instead of mutating the Dag, wires the new integration module, and records the new hand-authored test/helper in the SG-0 census with brief receipts.

2. Invariant categories

  1. LAYER MODEL — Compliant. This is test-only and does not add substrate types, Dag fields, or variants; the helper explicitly avoids mutation and reuses existing lowered declarations: src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/common/list_variant_tags.rs:3-5 and src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:308-333.
  2. INVARIANTS.md + modeling-discipline.md — Compliant. Fail-closed / single-authority handling is preserved for the fixture path: OptionalDiagnostic is matched structurally at src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:89-93, and the Violates read-channel arm returns a DimensionFail rather than fabricating success at src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:95-105.
  3. CODING.md — Compliant. The new Rust is data + free functions with explicit inputs, not hidden state: find_list_empty_constructor_tag(dag, list_ty) is a free helper over &Dag at src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/common/list_variant_tags.rs:10, and the opaque value construction stays in free functions taking &Dag at src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:310-333.
  4. TESTING.md — Finding, NON-BLOCKING. The witness-flow assertion is weaker than the behavior it claims: src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:423-425 only checks that the witness value contains integer literal 1, and the recursive helper ignores variant tags at src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:478-485. That can pass without proving the carrier is specifically List.Cons { head: Witness.Inhabits(1), tail: Empty }. For the claimed witness-flow receipt, the test should assert the list and witness constructor tags structurally, using the existing tag-resolution helpers.
  5. LOCKED DESIGN DECISIONS — N/A. The diff references worker/probe briefs as receipts, but it does not alter or diverge from a locked thesis/design decision; the compile-time receipt lines are src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:489-498.
  6. TRACKED vs UNTRACKED DEBT — Compliant. The deferred pieces are documented and bounded: lens-over-Dag folding is explicitly deferred to ReflectedProgram<T> / typed declaration-reference carrier work at src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:9-10, the read-channel Violates diagnostic lift is scoped at src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs:14-18, and the SG-0 census records the new hand-authored helper/test at src/v3/compiler/tests/integration/sg0_census_test.rs:332-350.

3. Verdict

APPROVE_WITH_COMMENTS

No substrate or production compiler shape changes are introduced, and the new scaffolding is documented, bounded, and census-tracked. The only issue I see is a non-blocking test-precision gap: the witness-list assertion should check the structured Inhabits carrier, not just the presence of an integer literal.

Findings: None. The diff only adds integration-test plumbing (opaque Dag/Behavior harness, find_list_empty_constructor_tag, SG-0 census entries, include_str! brief receipts). Nothing here introduces duplicate substrate authority: tags are resolved from the same compiled Dag (list_variant_tags.rs walks existing Instantiation rows). The Violates / dimension_fail_closed empty violations / witnesses behavior is explicitly documented as a scoped fail-closed stub, not a silent claim that diagnostics are real (e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs lines 14–18, 95–106). Lowering checks are split into separate tests with rationale aligned with TESTING.md’s behavior/split guidance (e6_g1a_option3_static_lens_test.rs lines 429–476).

Verdict: APPROVE — Scoped test-only change with clear receipts (SG-0, include_str!), honest documentation of deferred read-channel behavior, and no rubric violations grounded in this diff.

Re-checked after merge (#1857 landed 2026-05-06T21:08:40Z** on main): the scheduled Cursor api-review at 5483991still matchesorigin/main`.

  • Test-only integration harness + find_list_empty_constructor_tag (existing Instantiation scan), SG-0 census wiring, and include_str! brief receipts are all present on main.
  • Module docs still bound the Violates / dimension_fail_closed path as a fail-closed stub (empty violations / witnesses), not a claim of real read-channel diagnostics.
  • Lowering vs end-to-end checks remain split with TESTING.md-aligned rationale.

Verdict: No further code change from this thread — APPROVE stands; nothing to push post-merge.
