test(cake_package): check that every Cake package imports with flashinfer blocked - #8951
Related issue: #8928
Requirement: #8928 (comment) (every backend is self-contained)
This PR adds one test file, tests/cpu/test_cake_packages_standalone.py, and changes nothing else. A build that vendors a Cake package (#6553) copies the package directory into its own tree and imports it under its own name, without flashinfer. This test is the only check that imports every Cake package with flashinfer blocked, so the #8928 renames keep that layout working.
What it checks
For each distinct import path in PACKAGES of tests/test_helpers/cake_package.py, read when the test runs, a fresh interpreter does the following:
Blocks flashinfer with sys.modules["flashinfer"] = None and a meta-path finder that raises ImportError for flashinfer and flashinfer.*.
Removes the working directory from sys.path, along with every entry at or above a loaded directory. It keeps the other entries, so torch and tvm_ffi still import.
Loads the package directory where it is, without a copy, as the top-level package vendored_<directory>. A relative import that climbs out of the directory therefore fails.
Imports every .py module of the directory one by one, including modules in subdirectories. If __init__.py fails, its other modules are still checked.
Fails on any import error. It also fails if a flashinfer module leaked: any flashinfer.* entry left in sys.modules, or a flashinfer entry other than the None sentinel.
A PACKAGES row fails if its directory or __init__.py does not exist. The child interpreters run with CUDA_VISIBLE_DEVICES empty and -B, and each has a 600 s timeout. The prebuilt/JIT loader cake_build.py imports flashinfer.jit only inside a function (_jit_toolchain), so it passes. The file also tests itself on temporary packages: 13 cases for the child interpreter and 5 for sibling validation. That way a pass still means something once the allowlist is empty.
Limits:
Imports inside functions are not checked, because the test only imports modules.
An editable install also maps b12x, build_backend and build_utils to the checkout. The test does not block these names, so a package must not import them.
Declared siblings
A KCP or dense nondet package that needs a single-rank package declares it as a sibling:
Where siblings come from:build.jsoncommon.requires.packages (sibling directory names) when that key is present. Otherwise, the requires field of the package's row in scripts/check_cake_build_manifests.py.
Layout: the package and its siblings load under one synthetic parent, vendored_<directory>.<directory> beside vendored_<directory>.<sibling>. This matches the layout of check_cake_build_manifests.py --vendored-gate, so from ..<sibling> import x resolves. Undeclared siblings cannot be imported.
Requirements: each declared sibling must be a PACKAGES row with the same parent package and an existing directory. Otherwise the package fails.
Burn-down ALLOWLIST
These four packages fail on main today (the cake_dsa_indexer alias row left with its removal in #8936):
import path
modules that fail today
reason
flashinfer.experimental.cake_kda_det_train_kcp
cake_kcp, cake_kcp_jit
they import the single-rank package across directories (from ..cake_kda_det_train import), undeclared
compatibility alias: __init__.py star-imports flashinfer.experimental.cake_kda_det_train, and each module replaces itself with a det package's module, imported by its flashinfer path
flashinfer.experimental.cake_kda_train_kcp
cake_kcp, cake_kcp_jit
they import the single-rank package across directories (from ..cake.cake_kda_train import), undeclared
flashinfer.experimental.cake_stepfun_moe
__init__
__init__.py decorates its entry points with flashinfer's flashinfer_experimental_api (from ...api_logging import)
The allowlist is strict. An allowlisted package is marked xfail only when exactly its listed modules fail. The test fails if a listed module now imports or no longer exists, or if an unlisted module fails. A leaked flashinfer module always fails the test, whether or not the package is allowlisted. So the PR that fixes a package deletes its modules from the entry in the same change, and deletes the entry once it is empty. test_allowlist_names_packages fails if an entry's path is not in PACKAGES, if an entry is duplicated or empty, or if PACKAGES is empty.
How each row goes away:
The two KDA KCP rows: the KDA rename PRs declare the single-rank sibling (common.requires.packages in build.json, plus the README) and resolve it from their parent package.
The alias row (cake_kda_train): the alias is removed.
cake_stepfun_moe: it imports flashinfer's api_logging. Its owner decides how to vendor it.
For the rename PRs
Each family updates only its own PACKAGES rows. The test reads the table at run time, so no family copies this check. CI runs this file in the unit-test run over tests/. The file lives in tests/cpu because that run does not recurse into tests/experimental.
The experimental-tests block of a PR body accepts only tests/experimental/. A PR that changes PACKAGES, a package directory or a sibling declaration should therefore ask for a targeted run: @flashinfer-bot run tests/cpu/test_cake_packages_standalone.py
Tests
Cluster CPU node, CUDA 13.4 development container, main 2e98955: 57 passed, 5 xfailed (exactly the five ALLOWLIST rows); scripts/check_cake_build_manifests.py: 0 findings for 44 packages.
…nfer-ai#8928)
Constraint 2 of flashinfer-ai#8928 (the standalone build of flashinfer-ai#6553): a CPU check that
loads each distinct import path of PACKAGES in a fresh interpreter that
blocks flashinfer (sys.modules["flashinfer"] = None and a meta-path
finder that raises ImportError for flashinfer and flashinfer.*) and
drops from sys.path the working directory and every entry at or above
a directory it loads. The package directory is loaded where it is as
the top-level package vendored_<directory>, the name the vendored gate
of scripts/check_cake_build_manifests.py gives its copy, and every
module of the directory, in subdirectories too, is imported one by one
(a module an earlier one imported is not run again), also when an
__init__.py fails. A flashinfer entry in sys.modules other than the
None sentinel fails, and so does a missing directory. The children see
no GPU, write no bytecode, must exit 0 and fail after 600 s.
A package that needs a sibling package declares it in build.json as
common.requires.packages (sibling directory names); without that key
the check reads the requires of its row in
scripts/check_cake_build_manifests.py. The package and its siblings
are then children of one parent package, as the vendored gate lays
them out; a sibling loads when a module imports it, in any order. A
declared name must be a directory name, and the sibling a package of
PACKAGES with the same parent package and an existing directory.
ALLOWLIST names, per package, the modules that fail today: every module
of the two compatibility aliases, cake_kcp and cake_kcp_jit of the two
KDA KCP packages, and the __init__ of cake_stepfun_moe. Any other
failing module fails the test. A listed module that imports cleanly,
an entry whose package leaves PACKAGES, an entry that lists no module
and a second entry for one package fail until the list is updated, so
the PR that fixes a module deletes it from the entry. An empty PACKAGES
fails too.
Self-tests cover a flashinfer import, one after a module drops the None
entry, a relative import above the package, imports from the working
directory and from a PYTHONPATH entry above the package, a sibling
declared in build.json or in the checker (also when build.json lacks
the key), build.json taking precedence, siblings in any order, the
modules of a failing package and of subdirectories, a subpackage
imported once, a flashinfer module registered by hand, and a declared
sibling that is not a directory name, does not exist, is not a package
of PACKAGES or has another parent package.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
Adds CPU-only checks that import each distinct registered Cake package path in a fresh interpreter with flashinfer blocked and repository paths excluded. The tests validate sibling declarations, import failures, leaked modules, and allowlist consistency.

When build.json lists siblings, _siblings replaces the checker’s list without comparing them. If imports succeed, the test can pass with inconsistent metadata, while the vendored gate uses a different layout. Compare the declarations when the manifest key is present, and update the precedence self-tests.

…ake_mode_names (#8962)
## Description
PR #8939 renamed the GQA HD256 training package to
`flashinfer.cake_gqa_nondet_train`. Its names test used a local token
splitter, `_tokens`, to check the mode word. PR #8947 later added the
shared helper `tests/test_helpers/cake_mode_names.py`. Every #8928
family uses it for the shared naming rules. #8947 asked each family to
adopt the helper in a follow-up rather than copy it. This PR makes that
change for the GQA family.
It changes one file,
`tests/experimental/test_cake_gqa_nondet_train_names.py`. It does not
touch library code, kernels, docs or benchmarks. The branch has two
commits on main `02b041cd`. The head is `6f1fc68d`.
Changes:
- **Removed:** the local `_tokens` splitter and
`test_mode_word_is_a_token`. The helper's own self-test in
`tests/cpu/test_cake_mode_names.py` covers token splitting.
- **Added:** `test_the_shared_mode_rules_hold`. It runs the helper's
four shared checks one at a time:
| Helper call | Input | Assertion |
|---|---|---|
| `assert_mode_names(public)` | Public names | Public names carry
`nondet` after the op |
| `assert_no_deterministic_keyword(...)` | Every facade `__all__` name
except the aliases in a new `TYPE_ALIASES` tuple | No entry point takes
a `deterministic` keyword |
| `assert_same_object_same_name(public, (flashinfer, package, backend),
forwards=...)` | Namespaces: `flashinfer`, the backend package
`flashinfer.experimental.cake.cake_gqa_nondet_train`, and its
`cake_backend` module | Each object is bound under only one name across
those namespaces |
| `assert_old_names_fail(old modules, old names, cwd=repo root)` | Old
module paths (including `flashinfer.gqa_train` and
`flashinfer.experimental.cake_gqa_train`), removed facade entries and
removed backend names | Old module paths and names fail at import in a
fresh interpreter |
- **Updated:** `test_public_names_carry_the_mode` now calls
`assert_mode_names(package, names=FORWARDED)` instead of the local
splitter. It covers the backend objects that the facade forwards to or
re-exports. Its other checks stay the same: each forwarded name is in
both the backend and package `__all__`, and both names refer to the same
object.
- **Unchanged:** the family's own checks.
- `deterministic=` raises `TypeError` for every entry.
- Only the backward's alert reads torch's deterministic mode.
- The `build.json` package and build identity checks still run.
- `test_no_entry_takes_a_mode_keyword` still checks each entry point's
signature. It covers the 5 facade entries, the 4 forwarded backend
functions, `CakeGQANondetWorkspace` and `CakeGQANondetFunction.forward`.
### Why the test does not call `assert_cake_mode_module`
`assert_cake_mode_module(flashinfer.cake_gqa_nondet_train, ...)` fails
with exactly one error:
```
flashinfer.cake_gqa_nondet_train.CakeGQANondetDkvAccSource: takes a 'deterministic' parameter through **kwargs
```
This is a false positive:
- `CakeGQANondetDkvAccSource` is a `typing.Callable` alias. It is the
type of the `dkv_acc` callable, and the facade re-exports it in
`__all__`.
- `inspect.signature` returns typing's `(*args, **kwargs)` for the
alias. As a result, the helper's keyword check treats it as an entry
point.
- The alias is a type, not an entry point. Calling it raises
`TypeError`.
The second commit calls the four checks separately and leaves the alias
out of the keyword check through `TYPE_ALIASES`. The family's own
`test_no_entry_takes_a_mode_keyword` still checks every real entry
point.
## Related Issues
- Part of #8928.
- Follows #8939 (GQA HD256 rename) and #8947 (shared helper).
- #8951 (standalone import check) has no GQA entry and needs no change.

## Reviewer Notes
- The test now depends on `tests/test_helpers/cake_mode_names.py` from
#8947.
- Library behavior is unchanged.
- The helper's owner knows about the false positive for typing aliases.
If the helper later skips typing aliases, this test can go back to
calling `assert_cake_mode_module`.
