perf(cake_gdn_kcp): with grad, graph-replay checkpoint recompute hands its tapes to the backward - #8638
Cake ships four GDN training variants in FlashInfer. There is a non-deterministic and a deterministic form, and each comes as a single-rank package and a context-parallel (KCP) package. This PR changes the non-deterministic KCP package flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train_kcp. It changes only the checkpointed step (torch.utils.checkpoint, ckpt = 2 x fwd + bwd) under graph="replay". There the recompute now hands its tapes to the backward, and the step launches the eager checkpointed step's kernels. Before, the recompute replayed the original forward's graph, and the backward re-ran the prep program and the state walk. The default reuse_recompute_tapes="auto" takes this path once the rank's rows (tokens x value heads) reach a threshold: 61440 on sm_100a (B200) and 0 on sm_103a (GB300) and sm_107a (R200). Eager calls launch the same kernels as before. Outputs and every input gradient stay bitwise equal to the previous version.
"Previous" is this package at FlashInfer main f2926f2. Ratios are previous / this PR, so above 1 means this PR is faster. At the PR head (table A4), the graph checkpointed step on shape M (32768 tokens) gains 1.247-1.249 on B200 (6.050 -> 4.845 ms). It gains 1.245-1.248 on GB300 (5.598 -> 4.495 ms) and 1.253-1.257 on a 212-SM R200 (3.554 -> 2.828 ms). On shape N (8192 tokens) it gains 1.046-1.050 on GB300 (0.909 -> 0.866 ms) and 1.096-1.105 on R200 (0.518 -> 0.472 ms). On B200, shape N (49152 rows) is below the threshold and keeps the previous form: 1.130 -> 1.130 ms, 0.985-1.001, parity. Tables A and A3 time earlier revisions of this change. They show a checkpointed gain of 1.217-1.269 on shapes G and A, which the PR head does not re-time.
The change adds host work to graph-mode calls. This shows where the step is host-bound. B200 M fwd+bwd is 0.998 in three runs (4.644 -> 4.653 ms), classed REGRESSION. That is about 10 us of 4.65 ms. M ckpt in the same runs gains 1.247-1.249, so the workload does not regress. GB300 M fwd+bwd is 0.997-1.000 (4.352 -> 4.364 ms). N fwd+bwd is at parity on all three GPUs:
0.992-0.997 on B200 (0.643 -> 0.648 ms)
0.989 and 0.993 on GB300 (0.452 -> 0.457 ms)
1.000-1.003 on R200
Tables A and A3 predate the row threshold. In them B200 N ckpt is a REGRESSION (0.972-0.985), and more N cells are slower than previous. Eager timings (table A2) are at parity except for two single runs classed REGRESSION: B200 M fwd 0.999 and R200 N fwd 0.995.
det(main) is the deterministic KCP package of the same main. Against it, this PR is faster or at parity in every published A4 cell:
fwd+bwd: 1.029-1.059
M ckpt: 1.344-1.361 (B200 6.551 -> 4.845 ms)
N ckpt: 1.007-1.021 on B200, 1.073-1.075 on GB300 and 1.119-1.126 on R200
Table B times the PR head against det(main) on shapes G, A, M and N at CP1, and on shape A at CP8 (B200) and CP4 (GB300). There det(main) / this PR is 1.012 or more in every published cell. It is 1.012-1.386 on B200, 1.029-1.385 on GB300 and 1.031-1.362 on R200. The ckpt cells of shapes G, A and M are 1.303-1.386.
Table B also compares this PR with the strongest accuracy-qualified non-Cake arm. Its ratios are non-Cake ms / this PR ms, so above 1 means this PR is faster. At CP1, the cuDNN frontend GDN arms (FROST) are faster than this PR on shapes G, A and M. There non-Cake / this PR is 0.396-0.866 on B200, 0.341-0.954 on GB300 and 0.316-0.938 on R200. The one exception is R200 shape M ckpt, where the ratio is 1.003. On shape N, this PR is faster where a cell is published: 1.888-1.902 on B200 and 1.562 on R200. At CP > 1, the strongest accuracy-qualified non-Cake arm is FlashQLA 0.1.3 with its own dual context parallelism. FlashQLA needs its own environment, so it runs in a separate process. FLA-CP runs in both processes and is the anchor between them. On B200 at CP8, FlashQLA / this PR is 0.887 in fwd, 0.928 in fwd+bwd and 1.102 in ckpt. On GB300 at CP4, it is 0.951, 0.983 and 1.208. FlashQLA is faster in fwd and fwd+bwd, and this PR is faster in ckpt. Table B has no CP > 1 rows on R200.
Non-deterministic GDN training (KCP): the checkpoint recompute hands its tapes to the backward under CUDA-graph replay, performance
Previous = the non-deterministic KCP package before this PR: FlashInfer main 61bc8b6 (tables A / A2), main 5335002 (table A3) or main f2926f2 (table A4; it holds #8600 and #8623); this PR = this PR's package; det(main) = the deterministic KCP package of the same FlashInfer main (this PR does not change it; tables B and A4: main f2926f2); A/A = a second byte copy of previous. The Cake arms of a table run in one process per run, in both arm orders (one run each, table A4 two each). Graph mode = graph="replay" with a caller-held workspace and a context built with graph_replay=True; eager = graph="off". Operations: fwd = forward with autograd recording (light save, the default), fwd+bwd = forward + backward, ckpt = torch.utils.checkpoint(use_reentrant=False) forward + recompute + backward (2 x fwd + bwd). Under graph replay the previous version replays the original forward's graph for the recompute and recomputes the prep program and the state walk in the backward (the prep program three times per step); this PR launches the eager checkpoint step's kernels (the prep program twice, no output program in the recompute). Outputs and every input gradient are bitwise equal to the previous version in every timed configuration. Shape A runs three graph arms per process (previous, this PR, A/A) with fwd / fwd+bwd and ckpt in separate processes: four graph arms of 262144 tokens do not fit one GPU in one process. Revisions: tables A / A2 were measured on earlier revisions of this PR against main 61bc8b6 (see each GPU's note); table A3 re-measures the graph rows of the rebased revision against main 5335002 (the rebase brings in main's saved-set fix for save_mode="full"; the light-mode rows timed here launch the same programs before and after it). These timed revisions predate #8600 (a host-path change of the same package, now on main) and the review fixes. The PR head is the same package diff on main f2926f2 (the diff between the timed and the replayed package diffs is empty) plus host-side review fixes, a size rule (read once per recompute) and a change of the workspace byte queries (no runtime code): under graph="replay" the default reuse_recompute_tapes="auto" hands the recompute's tapes to the backward only when the rank's rows (tokens x value heads) reach a per-architecture threshold, 61440 on sm_100a and 0 on sm_103a and sm_107a; below it the recompute replays the original forward's graph as the previous version does (previous / hand-off in a sweep of the graph checkpointed step: B200 0.953 at 49152 rows and 1.016 at 61440 rows; GB300 1.013 and R200 1.07 at 49152 rows). Table A4 re-times the PR head against main f2926f2 (previous and det(main) of that main) in one process with its A/A arm, both arm orders twice, with the power gate: the graph N and M fwd+bwd and checkpointed rows on each GPU (N has 49152 rows; M, G and A are far above every threshold); on B200 two such steps on two boards (the second one re-measures the first one's unstable N cells and power-capped M fwd+bwd cells; every published run of both is shown). Table B times the PR head's package (4ddfeb4; the PR's later commits change tests, documentation and the facade's option mapping on the deterministic route only, so the non-deterministic package's code is the same) against det(main) and the non-Cake arms: one two-baseline process per run, both arm orders; shapes G / A / M / N at CP1 on each GPU and A at CP8 (B200) / CP4 (GB300). A cell with 5 % or more of its samples at the board power limit is re-timed under a sustained protocol (B200): per arm block a 5 s idle cool-down, 20 warm-up calls and 300 timed samples, three groups of mirrored blocks (three block pairs per arm). Timing (tables A / A2 / A3 / A4 and table B's normal protocol): CUDA events around each call; per arm 5 groups, each visiting the arm twice in mirrored order (2 x 12 samples per group, 120 samples per arm), every visit after 10 untimed warm-up calls, the L2 cache flushed before every sample; a cell is the median of the slowest rank's samples, and the group drift is the spread between the first and last group medians. Software: PyTorch 2.14.1+cu130 (CUDA 13.0 runtime), Python 3.14; drivers 580.82.07 (B200), 580.159.03 (GB300), 615.71.10 (R200, 208 SMs, tables A / A2 / A3), 620.62 (R200, 212 SMs, tables A4 and B).
Table A cells: previous ms -> this PR ms of the first published run (time order), then previous / this PR of every published run and the class per run (A/A envelope of the per-group ratios: win, parity = inside the A/A spread, REGRESSION). A run is published when both compared arms drift by 2 % or less, or else when the paired-ratio test passes (five or more groups, every per-group ratio within 1 % of their median); '†' marks a run published by the paired-ratio test only. Table B (PR head): ratio = baseline ms / this PR ms from the absolutes in the row; det(main) and this PR come from the first two-baseline process in time order where both arms drift by 2 % or less (else the paired-ratio test, '†') and no arm of the process reached the power limit in 5 % or more of its samples; the non-Cake ratio uses this PR's ms of the same process. '§' = a power-capped cell taken from the sustained protocol: the median of the block medians [min, max], each arm's share of samples at the power limit and its median SM clock (published when both arms drift by 2 % or less across the groups); 'measured under the cap' = a capped cell without a stable sustained record (no ratio published). '‡' = FlashQLA 0.1.3 with its own dual context parallelism, timed in a separate process with its own environment (below); its ratio divides by this PR's ms of the row's two-baseline process; '‡§' = where that process reached the power limit, FlashQLA under the sustained protocol over this PR's sustained median of the row. Non-Cake qualification: an arm qualifies for a workload when every output and input gradient (out, dq, dk, dv, dg, dbeta) is finite, with rel-RMS at most 1e-2 and max-abs at most 2e-2 x max |ref| against this PR's on the unpadded pack. A non-Cake cell is published when this PR's arm and the shown arm drift by 2 % or less and every qualified arm that drifts more is slower than the shown arm in every group; the non-Cake cell comes from the first two-baseline process in time order that meets this rule; within it, strongest = the lowest qualified median per operation. '*' = ratio below 1.000 (this PR slower than that baseline); 'n/p unstable' = not published (drift above 2 % and the paired-ratio test failed); 'n/p power-capped' = not published (5 % or more of the timed samples at the board power limit); 'n/p' in the non-Cake column = non-Cake records exist but no arm meets the rule above; 'not measured' = no process held both arms (in the non-Cake column: no non-Cake record for the row); 'not claimed' = the strongest applicable non-Cake arm could not be measured (FlashQLA, below; the reason is in the cell). A workload regresses only if two or more published runs are REGRESSION and their fwd+bwd and ckpt cells point the same way (B200 table A4 times ckpt only: there the ckpt runs alone decide).
Shapes (head dim 128, BF16 q / k / v, FP32 g / beta, in-kernel q / k L2 norm, layout contiguous, GDN layer only): A = 262144 tokens, 4 documents (98304 / 65536 / 57344 / 40960), heads (16, 48) (q/k heads, v heads); G = 131072 tokens, 12 documents (3598 ... 18252), heads (16, 48); M = 32768 tokens, 5 documents (12000 / 9000 / 6000 / 3768 / 2000), heads (16, 48); N = 8192 tokens, 3 documents (2049 / 3001 / 3142), heads (2, 6). CPn = context parallel over n GPUs. The single-rank proxy forces two segments per fragment (the segment walks and carry merges a CP > 1 fragment runs) on one GPU. Non-Cake arms: FLA-CP = flash-linear-attention 0.6.0's own context parallelism; FLA-HS = head split (all-to-all) around FLA's single-GPU kernels; FROST-ck0 / -ck64 = the same head split around cuDNN frontend 1.32.1's GDN (states recomputed / stored every 64 tokens).
FlashQLA 0.1.3 needs its own environment (tilelang 0.1.15 with TVM FFI 0.1.12, without the cuDNN frontend), so it cannot run in the same process as the cuDNN FROST arms, and the benchmark disables FLA's dispatch to it (FLA_FLASH_QLA=0). With its own dual context parallelism it is the strongest applicable non-Cake arm at CP > 1, so table B times it at shape A CP8 (B200) and CP4 (GB300) in a separate process with FLA-CP (FLA 0.6.0): the same inputs, the Q/K L2 norm in the kernel on both arms, no conv1d, the same protocol (the sustained protocol where this PR's two-baseline process reached the power limit). Before timing, its outputs and input gradients are checked against FLA-CP (rel-RMS 1e-2, max-abs 2e-2 of max|ref|); FLA-CP is the anchor between the two processes (listed under each table B). At CP1 FlashQLA was measured earlier only on shape M (B200 and GB300): slower than both FROST modes and faster than FLA in every measured cell, so the in-process FROST arms stand for the CP1 rows; the R200 table B has CP1 rows only.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Checkpoint recompute-tape reuse is supported during CUDA-graph replay, with automatic selection based on workload size and support for explicit settings.
Recompute decisions are included in graph caching, and outdated workspace hand-offs fall back to replay.
Automatic output-recomputation decisions apply during replay and are reflected in graph selection.
Workspace queries distinguish replay-resident tensors from kept-tape memory.
…aph="replay"
Under graph="replay" a torch.utils.checkpoint(use_reentrant=False) step ran
fwd_prep three times and the output walk twice: the recompute had the
original forward's CUDA-graph key and replayed its graph, and the backward
replayed fwd_prep and the tape walk because reuse_recompute_tapes was forced
off (an eager hand-off unbinds the tapes, which a captured graph cannot
follow).
The recompute now decides its tape hand-off and its output program before
the CUDA-graph lookup, and a decision other than (no hand-off, output
launched) is part of its key, so the hand-off form is captured as a graph of
its own. Under graph="replay" the kept tapes are the caller-held
workspace's own arena tapes (nothing is unbound, no memory is added). The
entry is stamped with the workspace's call count and the launch stream; the
backward binds it only while the workspace has made no other call since the
recompute, still binds those tensors and runs on the same stream, else it
replays fwd_prep and the tape walk. The backward's graph key carries the
hand-off's layout (geometry and optional planes), not its tensors: the take
has checked that they are the arena's own and a replay requires the arena
signature of the capture. The recompute's left-out output is a one-element
broadcast view under graph="replay", so the captured graph holds no output
buffer.
reuse_recompute_tapes now defaults to "auto" with graph="replay" too and
accepts every value there. A checkpointed graph step launches the eager
step's programs; outputs and gradients are unchanged bit for bit.
The facade said reuse_recompute_tapes is not available with
graph="replay". That still holds on the deterministic route. The
non-deterministic route now keeps the recompute's tapes under
graph="replay" on a caller-held workspace, so the note names the route.
Documentation only.
- facade: on the deterministic route an OptionsKcp with graph="replay" and
the default reuse_recompute_tapes="auto" maps that field to None, so the
deterministic package takes its own default (False under replay); an
explicit True still reaches it and is refused there.
- A backward capture that fails after its body ran restores the kept set
the body released, so the eager fallback binds it once.
- A captured hand-off forward caches the kept set's layout only (no arena
tensor); each replay binds the arena's tensors again.
- The graph cache keeps 256 keys (three per checkpointed layer) and drops
the least recently used key first; README documents both.
- Tests: the facade mapping, the late capture failure, the template's
references, the cache bound and order (CPU); the stale-tape GPU test
hooks three consecutive steps (eager, capture, replay).
On a small rank the checkpointed graph step is host-bound. The hand-off
form launches less GPU work (one B200, 8192 tokens, (2, 6) heads: 356
instead of 451 us of kernels), but its decision and its arena hand-off add
about 48 us of host time per layer and step (the checkpoint-frame read,
the stamp, the backward's checks), so that step ended later than before.
- Size rule of reuse_recompute_tapes="auto" under graph="replay" (caller-
held workspace): a rank with fewer T_r * HV rows than
GRAPH_RECOMPUTE_MIN_ROWS of its architecture (61440 on sm_100a; 0 on
sm_103a and sm_107a) decides nothing. The recompute keys and
replays the original forward's graph (output program included, nothing
kept) and the backward replays the prep program and the tape walk; no
graph task or frame is read.
True / False and graph="off" decide at every size.
- Crossover of one checkpointed layer (previous / hand-off step time):
B200 0.953 at 49152 rows, 1.016 at 61440, 1.039 at 73728; GB300 1.013 at
49152 rows, 1.10 at 73728; R200 1.07 at 49152 rows (benchmark).
- Host path: the forward entry reuses the Function's graph-task test; the
backward reads the graph task only when an entry can exist; a graph-cache
hit stamps its use order instead of re-inserting its key (one key hash).
- README, the options and the facade state the rule.
- Tests: the table per architecture and the rule's keys, reasons, launches
and bits per architecture (CPU); the replayed small recompute shares the
original forward's graph (GPU); the other graph tests run with the rule
at 0 rows.
The size rule of reuse_recompute_tapes="auto" under graph="replay" added
host time to every graph-mode forward: the Function's forward and the
forward entry each evaluated it, and each evaluation built a
torch.device and looked up the architecture again.
- The Function's forward reads the graph task first and evaluates the
rule only inside a backward pass (torch's recompute, where a hand-off
can follow), once per node forward, and passes the result to the
forward entry.
- The architecture is cached per (backend name, device index); the
index comes from Tensor.get_device().
- The backward's key part and the replay's kept stamp skip their
helpers when no kept set exists.
Tests: the size-rule helpers reset the architecture cache; new CPU
tests check one rule read per checkpointed step (none without a
checkpoint) and one architecture read per device.
…pace queries
gdn_workspace_layout_kcp / gdn_workspace_bytes_kcp refused graph="replay"
with reuse_recompute_tapes=True or "auto". The call now accepts both and,
under torch.utils.checkpoint, keeps the recompute's tapes in the arena for
the backward that follows.
- graph="replay" with reuse_recompute_tapes=True gives the arena hand-off's
figures exactly: the tapes, the stage_m plane and qn / kn stay arena rows,
the backward does not re-run the prep program (no arena qk_rstd) and
bwd.kept_tapes is 0.
- "auto" (and the default) gives the replay form's figures at every size,
an upper bound of the call: equal when the call takes the replay form
(below the size rule, or with a later saver in the checkpointed region),
larger by the backward's arena qk_rstd (with the in-kernel norm; else
equal) when it keeps the tapes.
- graph="off" figures are unchanged.
Tests: the option-check test follows the new rule; a new CPU test runs
graph="replay" under checkpoint on a recording workspace and checks the
forward, backward and pool figures at tolerance 0 for True and False, and
the "auto" bound on both sides of the size rule. The kept-form recorder of
the two-segment arena test accepts the new hand-off keyword.
The change enables checkpoint recompute tape reuse during CUDA-graph replay. It adds size- and frame-based decisions, validates arena-backed hand-offs, updates workspace accounting, and adds local, facade, and distributed tests.
reuse_recompute_tapes now defaults to "auto" under either graph mode. The deterministic facade maps an imported "auto" setting to None. Replay options and workspace queries describe replay and kept forms.
Recompute decisions and graph behavior flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train_kcp/cake_kcp.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp_cp1.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp_dist.py
Graph replay uses row thresholds and checkpoint-frame proofs to determine tape hand-off and output-launch behavior. The decisions affect graph keys. Tests cover size rules, replay results, and distributed checkpointed runs.
Arena hand-offs, backward, and cache lifecycle flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train_kcp/cake_kcp.py, flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train_kcp/cake_bytes.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp_cp1.py
Arena-backed kept entries record workspace and stream state. Backward rejects stale entries and restores kept state after capture failure. The graph cache uses least-recently-used eviction, and workspace accounting distinguishes arena hand-offs from external kept tensors.

Possibly related issues
flashinfer-ai/flashinfer#7818: The issue requests communication-free checkpoint recomputation. This change supports handing recompute tapes to backward during graph replay instead of repeating the communication-bearing forward path.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 2da51
The change is mergeable with bounded follow-up on option semantics, replay coverage, and GPU memory accounting. The larger graph cache retains more GPU memory, while normalized stale fallbacks need measured workspace validation; neither an out-of-memory failure nor incorrect numerical results was established.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the main change: under graph-replay checkpointing, the recompute hands its tapes to the backward. It also uses the conventional perf(scope) prefix. The title is specific and matches the changeset, which adds tape hand-off with the auto threshold, the cake_kcp changes, and the related tests and docs.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template's main parts. It has a detailed Description section with the change, rationale, and benchmark evidence. The template's Related Issues section is not filled in; the description references PR #8638 only in the objectives, not in the body. The Pre-commit and Tests checklists are not ticked or addressed. The Experimental Track section is not addressed. The experimental-tests fence is still the placeholder text, so the test targets are not declared. The description is very long and dense, with many tables that are hard to review. Most required content is present, but several template sections are missing or incomplete.
Resolution
Fill in the Related Issues section with the tracking issue or PR link. Tick or address the pre-commit and test checklist items and state the test results. Complete the Experimental Track section: add the tracking issue number, confirm the checklist items, and replace the placeholder experimental-tests fence with the narrow test targets (for example tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp*.py). Add a short Reviewer Notes section that points to the key review areas, such as the threshold rule and the host-side overhead on B200 M fwd+bwd. Consider moving the long benchmark tables to a linked document, and keep the Description section focused on the change and why it is needed.

- Facade: on the deterministic route an OptionsKcp whose
reuse_recompute_tapes is the default "auto" maps to None whatever its own
graph field says, so the deterministic package resolves it with the
call's final graph (instance, graph keyword or knob): "auto" under "off",
False under replay. An explicit True still passes and is refused there.
The facade test covers OptionsKcp() with graph="replay" as keyword / knob
on all three entries.
- Tests: the late-capture-failure and cached-template tests use
reuse_recompute_tapes=True and need no frame proof, so they no longer skip
on an unverified torch; the _kept_key_part checks move to their own test.
- Multi-rank coverage: a threaded two-rank test (crossing fragment, P = 2,
with and without the in-kernel norm) puts one rank above and one below the
size rule; five checkpointed graph-replay steps whose CPU captures re-issue
their collectives on replay; per rank the decision and backward form, and
the same bits as reuse_recompute_tapes=False and graph="off". The dist
rows run five checkpointed graph-replay steps with the shipped "auto",
"auto" with the size rule between the ranks, and True.
- Docs: "no memory is added" now covers the kept tapes only; the
recompute's hand-off graph holds its own static results (a saved set and,
when #5 launches in it, a full output per checkpointed layer).
recompute_output docs name the size-rule case (reason "small"); the
in-kernel norm notes of the byte queries and README qualify the kept-tape
rows as graph="off" only.
The package's runtime code is unchanged (docstrings only).
Add a checkpoint replay test that updates operands in place after capture.
The checkpoint replay tests in tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp_cp1.py and the checkpoint section of tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp_dist.py keep the same operand values at capture and on every replay. A replay that reads stale operand copies would therefore still match eager, and these tests would not detect it.
Add a separate test with its own inputs. Update one operand in place after capture, for example with copy_ under torch.no_grad(). Run an eager checkpoint step on the updated values. Compare the replayed outputs and gradients with that eager reference. Keep the change in a new test so that _ckpt_steps and the existing shared-input comparisons remain unchanged.

Explicit "auto" on the deterministic replay route is accepted instead of refused.
_options_for maps every "auto" value on the deterministic route to None. The deterministic OptionsDetKcp then resolves None to False under graph="replay". A caller who passes OptionsKcp(graph="replay", reuse_recompute_tapes="auto") therefore runs with tape reuse off and receives no error. The facade docstring says an explicit "auto" is refused under replay on this route.
The conversion cannot tell the two cases apart. OptionsKcp stores the same "auto" for an omitted argument and an explicit one. Rejecting "auto" before conversion would also reject the default OptionsKcp(graph="replay"), which the facade supports. The fix needs a way to record whether the value was supplied.

Cover changed inputs in the threaded checkpoint replay test.
Every step of this test runs the same operands. A graph replay that resends stale collective payloads therefore produces the same results as a fresh eager run, and the test would still pass. A step that changes the operands under the same graph key would detect this case.
That step needs two fake-backend changes:
_CollectiveGraph must send the current input when it replays. Its recording stores input.clone(), so the replay sends the capture-time values. Storing the live input instead changes the documented fake contract, and the _CollectiveGraph docstring must be updated to match.
The replay must also produce fresh local outputs. _FakeGraph.replay only counts calls and returns the capture-time results. Without recomputing the captured local computation on the new inputs, the replayed out and gradients would not match the eager comparison.

Count the stale-hand-off qk_rstd in the kept-form figure, or narrow the "exact" claim.
With graph="replay" and explicit reuse_recompute_tapes=True, a stale hand-off makes the backward replay #1. That replay writes an arena qk_rstd of 8 * T_r * H_qk bytes if none is bound. The kept-form figure sets this term to zero, and the docstring calls the figure exact. Either add the term for this path or correct the docstring and README.

Bound the retained graph memory by bytes, not only by entry count.
GRAPH_CACHE_MAX = 256 keeps up to 256 captured graphs alive. Each graph owns a private memory pool and keeps its static outputs, saved tensors, and gradients until it is evicted or cleared. Memory therefore grows with the entry count, and no byte limit caps it. A large checkpointed model can exhaust GPU memory before the least recently used entries are evicted. Add a byte budget, or keep the previous limit.

Add a normalized case for the stale arena hand-off to the workspace bound test.
With use_qk_l2norm_in_kernel=True, a stale arena hand-off takes the replay backward. That backward re-runs #1 and writes the arena qk_rstd. The kept-form query reports bwd.qk_rstd as 0. The stale-hand-off test does not enable normalization, and the normalized layout checks compare the query only with its own formula. No test measures the arena peak on this path.
Add a normalized stale-hand-off case. Assert the measured arena peak against the kept-form query. For its gradient assertions, use the normalized reference _ckpt_reference_l2n() from tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp.py:5221, as the other normalized checkpoint tests do.

Cake ships four GDN training variants in FlashInfer. There is a non-deterministic and a deterministic form, and each comes as a single-rank package and a context-parallel (KCP) package. This PR changes the non-deterministic KCP package
flashinfer.experimental.cake_gdn_train_kcp. It changes only the checkpointed step (torch.utils.checkpoint, ckpt = 2 x fwd + bwd) undergraph="replay". There the recompute now hands its tapes to the backward, and the step launches the eager checkpointed step's kernels. Before, the recompute replayed the original forward's graph, and the backward re-ran the prep program and the state walk. The defaultreuse_recompute_tapes="auto"takes this path once the rank's rows (tokens x value heads) reach a threshold: 61440 on sm_100a (B200) and 0 on sm_103a (GB300) and sm_107a (R200). Eager calls launch the same kernels as before. Outputs and every input gradient stay bitwise equal to the previous version."Previous" is this package at FlashInfer main f2926f2.
Tables A and A3 predate the row threshold. In them B200 N ckpt is a REGRESSION (0.972-0.985), and more N cells are slower than previous. Eager timings (table A2) are at parity except for two single runs classed REGRESSION: B200 M fwd 0.999 and R200 N fwd 0.995.
det(main) is the deterministic KCP package of the same main. Against it, this PR is faster or at parity in every published A4 cell:
Graph mode =
graph="replay"with a caller-held workspace and a context built withgraph_replay=True; eager =graph="off". Operations: fwd = forward with autograd recording (light save, the default), fwd+bwd = forward + backward, ckpt =torch.utils.checkpoint(use_reentrant=False)forward + recompute + backward (2 x fwd + bwd). The PR head is the same package diff on main f2926f2 (the diff between the timed and the replayed package diffs is empty) plus host-side review fixes, a size rule (read once per recompute) and a change of the workspace byte queries (no runtime code): undergraph="replay"the defaultreuse_recompute_tapes="auto"hands the recompute's tapes to the backward only when the rank's rows (tokens x value heads) reach a per-architecture threshold, 61440 on sm_100a and 0 on sm_103a and sm_107a; below it the recompute replays the original forward's graph as the previous version does (previous / hand-off in a sweep of the graph checkpointed step: B200 0.953 at 49152 rows and 1.016 at 61440 rows; GB300 1.013 and R200 1.07 at 49152 rows). Software: PyTorch 2.14.1+cu130 (CUDA 13.0 runtime), Python 3.14; drivers 580.82.07 (B200), 580.159.03 (GB300), 615.71.10 (R200, 208 SMs, tables A / A2 / A3), 620.62 (R200, 212 SMs, tables A4 and B).Table A cells: previous ms -> this PR ms of the first published run (time order), then previous / this PR of every published run and the class per run (A/A envelope of the per-group ratios: win, parity = inside the A/A spread, REGRESSION).
B200 (sm_100a)
Tables A / A2: an earlier revision of this PR (before the rebase; its package differs from the rebased one only by main's save_mode="full" fix). Table A3: the rebased revision on another B200 board; tables A4 and B: the PR head on other boards. Tables A / A2 / A3 predate the size rule: their N graph ckpt cells time the hand-off, which the PR head does not take at N on this GPU (49152 rows, below 61440). The power-capped cells of tables A3 / A4 are listed under each table.
A. CUDA-graph replay (graph="replay"): this PR vs previous version (same process, A/A arm)
A2. Eager (graph="off", control): this PR vs previous version (same process, A/A arm)
B. Two baselines at the PR head (graph mode for the Cake arms; the non-Cake arms have no graph form here and run eager; det(main) = the deterministic KCP package of main f2926f2)
FLA-CP anchor of the FlashQLA cells (FlashQLA process / two-baseline process, ms): A CP8 fwd 9.575 / 9.636; A CP8 fwd+bwd (sustained) 25.765 / 25.736; A CP8 ckpt (sustained) 35.246 / 35.191.
Shape A CP1 on B200 runs in several processes, each holding this PR's graph arm: one process of this PR in eager and graph form plus the four non-Cake arms (262144 tokens each) runs out of the GPU's memory. The det(main) / this PR cells come from processes of det(main) and this PR (graph); the non-Cake cell from processes of this PR (graph and eager; the eager arm is the non-Cake arms' accuracy reference) with the two FROST arms and with the two FLA arms, both arm orders: per group the first process that meets the rule, then the lowest median over the groups.
