perf(cake_kda): faster context-parallel host path, wave-fill plan rule and capped graph replay, with grad- #7089 - #7097
Conversation
…e replay cap for the context-parallel host The eager context-parallel KDA calls reuse the host work that does not depend on the call: the entry point validates the options once and the autograd node carries them, the workspace returns its last tables for an unchanged (context, H, device, direction, knobs) and keeps the pool views of an unchanged pool, the local stages launch from a per-(arena, table set, direction) value template with a cached argument plan and raw-stream FFI context, and the walk and merge launches pass the table set's own device tables instead of a positional ABI the provider form discards. Every cache is keyed on object identity plus host integers, bounded (ID_CACHE_MAX entries per table-set cache) and owned by the object whose lifetime it follows; the launch templates live on the workspace's local arena and reference the table set only weakly, so the backend holds no workspace, arena or table set. Same kernels, same arguments, same order, same stream: the results are bitwise those of the previous host path, which stays reachable through the private test knob host_trim. The segment plan rule "wave_fill1_p1tie" takes P = 1 on a rank with two or three fragments below the chain cap whose P = 1 walks run one wave and whose longest-processing-time makespan over the actual fragment chunk counts at P = 1 is not above the makespan at the occupancy P: such a rank runs no segment composition and no backward re-walk. The previous rules stay selectable through the p_rule test knob; the fused carry merges (merge_fuse="carry") are a test knob, off by default. Under graph="replay" the captured call now carries the one-CTA-per-SM cap of the tape programs itself: right after each tape launch is captured the host sets the preferred shared-memory carveout as a launch attribute of the kernel node it just added (cudaStreamGetCaptureInfo, cudaGraphKernelNodeSetAttribute, host-only ctypes calls into the loaded runtime). Without those entry points, or when the runtime cannot name the captured node, the capture continues without the cap after one RuntimeWarning and the call records cache_config="unavailable"; results are bitwise identical either way. The previous replay forms stay selectable through the graph_cap test knob. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
…alo calls
The eager halo calls cache their context-derived host work per (context, S,
C, device, local cu_seqlens): the validated tables, the halo splits, the
record selection with its plan scalars and grids and the loaded modules with
their argument plans, keyed by the context object's identity (the context is
pinned by its entry) and bounded at HOST_CACHE_MAX contexts; host_cache_clear()
drops them. The operand checks, the gather, the exchange, the wait and the
launches are those of the previous path, so the results are bitwise identical;
the previous path stays reachable through the module's private test knobs
(_set_test_knobs({"host_trim": 0})). The knobs tests cover the gate, the
validation, the per-context bound and the FFI device cache.

…le, fused carry merges and kernel-node replay cap CPU tests of the P = 1 tie rule (oracle, examples at 152 SMs, the per-rank plan enumeration of the gate rows with the walk and merge inventory), of the fused carry chain families, of the host_trim and merge_fuse knobs, of the trimmed host path (options pass-through, the workspace fast paths, the table-owned walk sublists, the identity-keyed device tables, the launch without the discarded ABI, the arena-owned launch templates weakly keyed by the table set) and of the kernel-node replay cap against a CUDA-runtime double (the node attribute inside a capture, the post-capture form, the export-name resolution of the capture-info call, the degrade without the entry points); GPU tests of the replay cap forms and of a training loop with a new context per step releasing its memory. The multi-GPU test's import contract admits functools and weakref. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
…d the capped graph replay README notes for the context-parallel training path: the replayed call keeps the tape programs at one CTA per SM through a launch attribute of the captured kernel nodes (and continues uncapped after one warning without the runtime entry points), the eager calls reuse their call-independent host work with bounded, owner-scoped caches, and the segment plan's P = 1 tie line on two- and three-fragment ranks below the chain cap; the private test knobs keep the previous forms reachable. The shipped manifest `build.json` is re-rendered by every kernel update of the package; the test-only manifest `build.test.json` only when its programs change. `test_test_manifest_is_the_test_only_programs_under_the_opt_in` asserted the two generator records equal, and fails on current main since flashinfer-ai#7023 re-rendered the shipped manifest alone. The test now checks that the two records carry the same fields (`cake_revision`, `cuda`, `rendered_at`). Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
…tion `test_kcp_plan_p1tie_lane_rows` computed its base P with the default plan rule, which is the P = 1 tie rule itself since its adoption: the test compared the rule with itself (0 changed ranks on every row) and still passed. The base side now names `p_rule="wave_fill1"` and the tie side uses the shipped default (and equals the explicit `p_rule="wave_fill1_p1tie"`); the rows the rule changes must be exactly the rows of record (the two-fragment Z ranks of the perf packs at CP 8 / 16 and four coverage rows, all H = 64) and every other row must be unchanged. The inventory comparison and the context check follow the same sides. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
The backend's fifth table is now the block table of its segmented recurrences (seg_table, NSEG + 2 N + 1 words) and the segment-table program left the package. The context-parallel route never launches those recurrences: its fifth table stays the [NSEG + 1] segment table the boundary kernels take as seq_chunk_start. The contract test compares the four chunk tables with the backend's layout and the fifth entry with the route's own formula, and says why the two fifth tables differ. The GPU parity test keeps the chunk-table program parity and checks the segment formula from the device-built seq_chunk_start instead of launching the removed program. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
The backend's local programs changed: the intra program writes the GLM prep's rows itself, the output and the dA / dv programs became fused state recurrences, and only the replay prep keeps the internal dout copy. The context-parallel route runs its own recurrences (the K1 / K2 walks), so its local stages now take the plan's records on the forward path without a saved set and on the replay path for both backward modes, launch the WY program directly where the plan fuses it into a recurrence, and use two route-owned records: kcp_fwd_o (the output from the K1 tapes) and kcp_dav (dA_qk and the intra-chunk dv1 K2 reads). The registry entries of those two records follow in a separate commit. Both backward modes run the same prep, intra and WY programs on the same operands (the saved token rows stay in the saved set and are read by no local program), so saved mode and replay produce identical gradients by construction; the SPEC-3 debug check becomes a recorded probe of the forward's prep rows against the backward's, raising only on request. The intra record that computes the chunk layout itself writes its tables into a scratch set on the arena, counted by the workspace bytes; every other program reads the context's CPU-built tables. A CPU test drives the kernel backend against the registry with a recording launcher and checks that every launched record finds its logical names, that the two backward modes launch the same records on the same grids, and the scratch-table and byte accounting. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
No local program of the context-parallel route reads the forward's token-row Aqk / Akk any more: the dA / dv program reads the internal rows, the replay's WY and fused-gradient programs read the internal rows too, and the backward recomputes those rows with the intra program in both modes. The forward therefore runs the intra program with write_ext = 0 on every call, the saved set drops the two tensors (KCP_SAVED_VERSION 2), kcp_saved_bytes drops their 256 * T_r * H term and the CPU tests pin the field list and the formula. Both backward modes still run the same programs on the same operands; the GPU tests keep comparing them bitwise. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
The plan-rule docstrings and comments still named "wave_fill1" as the
shipped default and dated the replay, walk-geometry and plan-rule
adoptions to "this revision"; the README gave the convolution facade a
graph= keyword it does not have, called the graph cache an LRU and left
the wave rule's fragment bound and the tie line's shape out; the
partition facade and the README described cut points as a layout of
their own. Documentation only: "wave_fill1_p1tie" is the shipped rule
("wave_fill1" the previous one), the earlier adoptions are dated as
such, the graph cache evicts the oldest key, the wave rule applies to
ranks with at most three fragments, the tie line is stated at H = 64 on
152 SMs, cut points apply to the per-document zigzag layout, and the
wave-rule constants name their measurements instead of files.

The context-parallel composition forms each rank's output from the forward walk's state tapes and the first value gradient its adjoint walk reads with the chunk output and output-backward kernels the single-rank route no longer launches. Register them as the KCP records kcp_fwd_o and kcp_dav (the kernels, libraries and argument plans are the former fwd_o / dav records'), with their grid rules (kcp_sm_bounded: persistent CTAs over the (chunk, head) tiles bounded by ctas_per_sm x SMs; kcp_pairs: one CTA per chunk pair and head) and the logical names the host binds; render their units and build.json entries. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ild test The KCP registry gained the two chunk stages of the context-parallel route, kcp_fwd_o and kcp_dav. The build test's frozen argument lists, program tuple and identity table take them (their argument plans are the former fwd_o / dav records', byte for byte), the grid test checks their two grid kinds, and the README's registry counts follow. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
The forward intra program writes the chunk-final gate row alone and the backward prep program every row's prefix; the K1 / K2 / K3 walks read row 63 only, so the SPEC-3 probe records a difference on rows 0-62 by construction. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
…e context-parallel comments The schedule, fused-walk and plan-rule knobs of the context-parallel host were still annotated with internal work-item labels and ruling ids in comments and docstrings of the host modules and the KCP test file. Name the knobs instead. Comments and docstrings only; no code change. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
… are The refusals of head_groups > 1 and save_mode='tape' on the context-parallel route referred to an internal delivery phase. State the unsupported option instead. Two message strings; no behaviour change. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>

Insert a host-cache entry only after it is fully built.
On a cache miss, _host_cache_entry stores an empty dict in _HOST_CACHE before the caller fills it. Each fill guard tests if not e:, which is true only while the dict is empty. The first e.update(...) makes it non-empty, so a failure later in the same fill leaves a partial entry cached. A retry with the same key then skips the fill.
- Forward (
_kcp_forward_trim): If the_table(...)call forhist_row_offraises, or then_ch_tiles > grid[0]check raisesValueError, eis left partly filled. On retry,_exchange(...)issuesall_to_all_singlebeforevaluesreadse["hist_row_off"]and**e["scalars"]. This raisesKeyError. Depending on the failure point, the missing key is'hist_row_off'or'scalars'. - Backward (
_kcp_backward_trim): If a failure occurs aftere["hist_row_off"]ande["tail_row_off"]are set,e["rows"]ande["launches"]stay unset. On retry,_exchange(...)runs and thentorch.empty((e["rows"], C, WIDTH), ...)raisesKeyError: 'rows'.
The first call still raises the original error. The retry instead raises a KeyError after the exchange has been issued, which hides the original cause.
Build the entry in a local dict. Store it in the cache only after the fill succeeds.

…el saved-context backward (#7117) The Cake packed KDA kernel family, a chunked training backend for documents packed into one sequence, has two variants: a single-device variant, and a context-parallel (KCP) variant that splits the sequence over the ranks of a distributed process group, passes the recurrent state across ranks through affine state summaries, supports contiguous, zigzag and per-document zigzag + ragged partition layouts as well as saved-context and checkpoint-replay backward, and comes with the halo variant of the causal conv1d + SiLU training backend. This PR makes the saved-context backward of the context-parallel variant cheaper: on ranks with parallel degree P > 1, the forward now keeps its carry plane (the per-segment FP32 carry states, 12-80 MiB per rank for the configurations in the table) in the saved set, and the backward binds that plane read-only instead of rebuilding it, which skips its per-segment state re-walk kernel and carry merge launches. Kernels, the P = 1 path and the checkpoint-replay path are unchanged and results are bitwise identical to the previous version; the forward's steady peak memory rises by the kept plane while the backward's does not. The speedup over the previous Cake version of the same kernels as merged in PR #7097, measured with the same protocol, ranges from 0.9294x to 1.0397x in session 1 and from 0.9950x to 1.0387x in session 2: 34 of 144 rows are faster by more than 2 % in both sessions, 101 of 144 stay within 0.98-1.02 in both, no row is slower by more than 2 % in both, and the remaining rows sit in different bands in the two sessions. The skipped work is all in the backward, which only B3 includes: B3 ranges from 0.9950x to 1.0387x across both sessions, while B1, the forward alone, ranges from 0.9294x to 1.0397x, with both extremes coming from session 1. Latency in ms, NVIDIA GB300 (sm_103a), CUDA 13.0, driver 580.159.03, H = 64 heads, median over steady iterations of the slowest rank, two sessions s1 / s2 on different nodes; CP2 / CP4 on one node, CP8 on two nodes, CP16 on four nodes of one NVL72 domain; B1 = module forward, B3 = forward + checkpoint replay + backward; previous version = the same kernels as merged in PR #7097, measured with the same protocol in the same sessions as an interleaved arm. | pack | CP | layout | boundary | previous version ms (s1 / s2) | this PR ms (s1 / s2) | speedup vs previous version (s1 / s2) | repeated offset walks and carry merges. * **Options** * Choose whether to save carry data or recompute it during backward processing. Saving carry data is enabled by default and increases the reported saved-memory requirement when plans use multiple segments. * **Bug Fixes** * Trimmed training paths now follow the same legacy channel-tile planning rule as untrimmed paths. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> --------- Co-authored-by: Yingyi Huang <averyh@nvidia.com> Co-authored-by: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Cake packed KDA kernel family, a chunked training backend for documents packed into one sequence, has two variants: a single-device variant, and a context-parallel (KCP) variant that splits the sequence over the ranks of a distributed process group, passes the recurrent state across ranks through affine state summaries, supports contiguous, zigzag and per-document zigzag + ragged partition layouts as well as saved-context and checkpoint-replay backward, and comes with the halo variant of the causal conv1d + SiLU training backend. This PR makes the already shipped context-parallel variant faster: the eager context-parallel calls take a trimmed host path that reuses call-independent host work across calls through bounded caches keyed on object identity and host integers, with kernels, arguments and launch order unchanged and results bitwise identical to those of the previous host path. The per-rank parallel degree P is now set by a wave-fill plan rule with a P = 1 tie: a rank with two or three fragments takes P = 1 when its longest-processing-time makespan at P = 1 is not above the makespan at the occupancy P, and then needs no segment composition and no backward re-walk. The variant also gains dedicated context-parallel output and adjoint programs (the chunk output and output-backward kernels that form each rank's output from the forward walk's state tapes and the first value gradient of the adjoint walk, which the single-device route no longer launches) and an opt-in CUDA-graph replay (
graph="replay", default"off") whose captured tape launches carry the one-CTA-per-SM shared-memory carveout as a kernel-node attribute. On NVIDIA GB300 (sm_103a), its speedup over the KDA context-parallel training of flash-linear-attention (FLA KCP) ranges from 1.4640x to 2.7942x across all 144 configurations and both sessions.Latency in ms, NVIDIA GB300 (sm_103a), CUDA 13.0, driver 580.159.03, H = 64 heads, median over steady iterations of the slowest rank, two sessions s1 / s2 on different nodes; CP2 / CP4 on one node, CP8 on two nodes, CP16 on four nodes of one NVL72 domain; B1 = module forward, B3 = forward + checkpoint replay + backward; for the per-document layout the FLA KCP baseline is the faster of FLA's two layouts (the arm is named in each cell: fla_C = contiguous, fla_Z = zigzag).
The family's other Cake variant is the single-device packed KDA training forward with saved-context and checkpoint-replay backward, together with the non-context-parallel causal conv1d + SiLU training backend; the family ships on sm_100a, sm_103a and sm_107a, and the context-parallel kernels of this PR are built for all three.
