perf(moe): optimize sparse SM107 MegaMoE decode - #6447
Conversation
Extend the existing GenPhase pipeline with bounded N64 geometry, live-row gather, sparse metadata handling and prefix reuse. Mask invalid BF16 combine terms in both families, retaining quantized and in-kernel reduction fallbacks. Add graph replay and geometry regressions. AI-assisted implementation and source review; exact-source GPU qualification tracked in the draft PR.

Correctness review only; no hardware performance measurements are included.
Reviewed 422473601c3bd490fce51d18c0df8854c105a0bb against 53e3168a630bc9ca55f0321fb3cee50242770b1c. Please hold the generic-router change pending the P1 below. The separate GenPhase changes passed the additional coverage described here.
-
[P1 — blocks approval] Generic routing produces incorrect EP4 results after changing routes on a captured graph. I reproduced this on native SM107 with
kernel_variant="inference", MXFP8 E4M3, EP4,E=16, H=512, I=256, topk=4, capacity=1024, tile(256,128,128), uniform cluster(4,1), bulk FC2 stores, grouped/grid-stride scheduling, and separate BF16 reduction. Both early and late routing weights are affected. Keep pointers/shapes fixed and replay the same graph through dense-129, all-masked, last-capacity-row-only, sparse holes, asymmetric rank populations[0,1,129,1024], and dense-1024 restoration, changing inputs/scores in place. After restoration, the first replay can contain NaNs, and even the seventeenth replay can retain incorrect finite rows. Invalid rows are checked for exact zero; valid rows are compared against the collective reference over all 1024 rows, not a sample. The diagnostic poisons combine storage and synchronizes all ranks before launching.The same correctness probe on base passes. Replacing only
src/sources/communication/nvlink_domain/token_comm.pywith its base version, while retaining the new masked reducer and omitted preclear, also passes the first and repeated replays. Restoring the old combine/preclear behavior while retaining the changed router does not eliminate first-replay NaNs. This narrows the regression to the generic-router changes/interactions; it does not yet identify which instruction or ordering invariant is responsible. Please add this multirank sparse-to-dense regression and fix or defer the generic-router optimization. The current single-GPU routing test's restoration only populates 33 rows, so it misses this case. -
[P2] Connect the new regressions to the SM107 qualification entry points.
test_sm107_genphase_cga2_kernel.py,test_sm107_masked_combine.py, andtest_sm107_routing_graph.pyare absent fromqualify_sm107.py'sSUITES["single"]and fromrun_tests.sh oracle_sm107. The SM107 workflow invokes the former, so a green qualification currently skips all three new files. Please register them in both entry points. -
[P2] Refresh the vendoring record.
VENDOR.mdstill says all exported code matches1667b47aexcept a comment, and describes GenPhase as requiring(4,1). This PR modifies eight exported implementation files and adds admitted(2,1)configurations. Record the upstream/export revision or explicit local patch exceptions, and update the supported geometry, so the next export does not silently discard these changes.
Validation: independently ran all 44 GenPhase native tests successfully. Additional EP4 testing passed all six GenPhase configurations (MXFP8 CGA4/CGA2 and mixed FP4/FP8 CGA4, each with early/late weights), each across six routing/input states and 17 replays per state, checking first and final outputs on every rank. These passes do not cover the generic-router failure above. No PR source changes were pushed by this review.
Restore the Generic router after an EP4 sparse-to-dense captured-graph regression. Retain masked BF16 combine and GenPhase optimizations, add full-capacity multirank replay coverage, register the new qualification files, and record the local vendor patches. AI-assisted. Validated on native SM107: 66 single-GPU cases and 8 distributed cases on each of four ranks; the new regression fails both Generic modes on the previous head.

<!-- .github/pull_request_template.md --> ## 📌 Description The portable CUDA DLPack/capture-stream test constructs `Sm107BlockScaledSymmBuffer` with `object.__new__`, bypassing its initializer. After #6447, `launch()` reads `self.kernel.masks_invalid_combine_slots` to decide whether invalid combine slots need clearing. The fixture omitted `kernel`, causing all three quantization cases to fail with `AttributeError` before the dummy compiled callable runs. Initialize the same lightweight kernel capability stub already used by the host contract fixture. Setting `masks_invalid_combine_slots=False` preserves the test's existing launch-side clearing path and keeps the real DLPack rebinding and CUDA Graph replay checks portable across supported CUDA GPUs. This is a test-fixture repair; production code is unchanged. ## 🔍 Related Issues Fixes the CI regression introduced by #6447 and observed in [the A10G job for #6506](https://github.com/flashinfer-ai/flashinfer/actions/runs/38667451074/job/116202702238?pr=6506). The job reported 3 failures, all from this test, alongside 1107 passes. ## 🚀 Pull Request Checklist Thank you for contributing to FlashInfer! Before we review your pull request, please make sure the following items are complete. ### ✅ Pre-commit Checks - [x] I have installed `pre-commit` by running `pip install pre-commit` (or used your preferred method). - [ ] I have installed the hooks with `pre-commit install`. - [ ] I have run the hooks manually with `pre-commit run --all-files` and fixed any reported issues. > If you are unsure about how to set up `pre-commit`, see [the pre-commit documentation](https://pre-commit.com/). ## 🧪 Tests - [x] Tests have been added or updated as needed. - [ ] All tests are passing (`unittest`, etc.). - Changed-file pre-commit hooks and `git diff --check`: passed. - `python -m pytest tests/moe_ep/test_sm107_block_scaled_contracts.py tests/moe_ep/test_sm107_torch_staging.py -q`: **117 passed, 11 skipped** on the CPU-only local host. All 11 CUDA staging cases skipped because CUDA is unavailable locally; this is not GPU validation. - [Normal GPU CI](https://github.com/flashinfer-ai/flashinfer/actions/runs/38672336957) was started with the documented `run-ci` label at head `38ae833e6`. It includes the three originally failing real-DLPack/capture-stream cases; results are pending. ## 🔬 Experimental Track <!-- Only for PRs submitted under the experimental policy (CONTRIBUTING.md → "Experimental APIs and Backends"). Leave this section untouched for normal PRs. --> - [ ] This PR is **experimental**: it adds or changes code under `flashinfer/experimental/` and/or an `@flashinfer_experimental_api`. Tracking issue: # - [ ] The tracking issue names an owner, the reason for the experimental path, and a graduation plan with a target release. - [ ] Core changes are limited to a thin entry point (signature, shared validation, feature-gate check, backend selection, handoff). - [ ] Tests live in `tests/experimental/` and were validated on the intended hardware; a runnable example is included. - [ ] Nothing is registered in `flashinfer/aot.py`, and no experimental backend is reachable from `backend="auto"` without `FLASHINFER_ALLOW_EXPERIMENTAL_AUTO_BACKENDS=1`. (Calling an `@flashinfer_experimental_api` or naming a backend explicitly is itself the opt-in and needs no environment variable.) - [ ] **Test scope declared below.** The experimental CI lane runs exactly these targets, so keep them as narrow as the change allows. <!-- Required for experimental PRs. Replace the commented lines below with your targets. Do not delete the fence or change its `experimental-tests` tag — the experimental-track watcher reads it verbatim to decide which targets to ask CI for. --> ```experimental-tests # One target per line: a directory or a file. (A pytest ::selector is not # supported -- the sharding runner cannot consume one.) Must be under # tests/experimental/ and must exist. Delete these comment lines and add yours, e.g. # # tests/experimental/test_my_backend.py # tests/experimental/my_backend/ # # Declaring the whole tree (tests/experimental/) is allowed but means every # experimental PR pays for every other feature's tests, in every matrix cell. ``` ## Reviewer Notes The production initializer always assigns `self.kernel`; the missing attribute is specific to this manually constructed test workspace. The corresponding host fixture was updated in #6447, but this CUDA fixture was missed. The original PR's targeted CI scope also omitted `test_sm107_torch_staging.py`. Self-review found no remaining changes needed. The all-files hook checkbox remains unchecked because hooks ran only on the changed file. <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **Tests** * Updated coverage for DLPack capture-stream launches to confirm invalid combine slots continue to be cleared. This is a test-only change and does not alter application behavior or add user-facing functionality. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai -->

Sm107BlockScaledMoeConfig rejects max_sm_count together with a
fallback_cluster_shape_mn, because mixed-CGA occupancy is resolved from
the hardware probe. Every tuned and heuristic NVFP4 EP4 knob set names
fallback (2, 1), so any SM budget failed when the workspace was built.
make_workspace_config now drops the fallback cluster, giving a uniform
cluster launch, whenever a budget is set. The budget itself is passed
through unchanged (an int, as before). The helper is shared by the SM107
backends, so an MXFP8 workspace with a budget is launched uniformly too
instead of raising.
Why: a persistent megakernel on all SMs leaves nothing for a concurrent
side-stream workload. vLLM runs the DSv4 shared-expert MLP on a side stream
next to the MegaMoE; capping the megakernel lets both run at once.
Measured (VR200, DSv4.1 NVFP4 checkpoint):
- one MoE layer at EP4 with the shared-expert MLP on a side stream
(CUDA-graph replay, cold L2; budget points from one sweep run, serial
points from a 3-rep run):
- 1536 tokens/rank (capacity 2048): 263 us with 180 SMs vs 273 us with
all SMs, and 304 us with the shared expert run serially;
- 3072 tokens/rank (capacity 4096): 343 us with 148 SMs vs 365 us with
all SMs, and 380 us serially;
- per step (EP4 layer times, cold, summed over 21 layers x 2046 + 19
layers x 1260 tokens/rank; a later build of the original flashinfer-ai#6499 series,
which also had the staging and reduce commits now covered by flashinfer-ai#6398 and
flashinfer-ai#6447): 9.87 ms at 196 SMs, 9.93 ms at 180, 10.28 ms at 148;
- serving (4 GPUs, concurrency 1024) at 196 vs 180 SMs: +1.0 % TPS/GPU
and +0.7 % interactivity on the same node.
That later build also added the shared-expert output inside a deferred
top-k reduce, which this series does not have (bit-identical to a
separate add and within about 1 us per layer of it at 1260 and 2046
tokens/rank).
Gate: only when max_sm_count is set. The default None is unchanged.

…h arguments The per-call NVFP4 epilogue scalars (fc1_alpha, fc2_alpha, fc1_norm_const) were copied into the workspace tensors on every call, which is 3 DtoD launches per MoE layer. Contiguous fp32 [E_local] tensors on the workspace device are now bound directly as launch arguments. Other values are still copied, and an omitted scalar still resets the workspace tensor to ones; the launch then uses the workspace tensor, so a pooled workspace never reuses a stale value. The bound pointers are part of the launch key (ahead of the stream), so a different binding re-binds the launch arguments on the host, without a recompile. Callers must keep the tensors alive while launches or captured graphs use them; the qualification guide states this. The offline autotuner and the sampled correctness oracle now read the bound tensors too. Otherwise they would time and check against unit scalars: the existing nvfp4 in-situ kernel-vs-reference test case fails with rel error 2.38 without this. Measured (VR200, EP4, 2304 tokens/rank, kineto): 3 copies removed, about 4 us per MoE layer in the graph; bound and copied scalars bit-identical (max abs diff 0.0 at capacity:rows 128:6 to 3072:2520, non-unit per-expert scalars). Per MoE layer at EP4 on the original flashinfer-ai#6499 series (which also had the staging and reduce commits now covered by flashinfer-ai#6398 and flashinfer-ai#6447), previous commit -> this commit (one DSv4.1 MoE layer with checkpoint weights and uniform random top-6 routes, shared-expert MLP overlapped under a 196-SM budget, CUDA-graph replay with cold L2, p50 of the slowest of the 4 ranks, median of 2 runs): 237.9 -> 231.1 us at 1260 tokens/rank (capacity 3072), 268.2 -> 261.2 us at 2046 (capacity 2048), -8.7 us at 2304 (capacity 3072) and -4.2 us at 4608 (capacity 6144); outputs bit-identical on all 4 ranks. Both arms also added the shared-expert output inside a deferred top-k reduce, which this series does not have (bit-identical to a separate add and within 4.5 us per layer of it at these sizes). Gate: none. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

<!-- .github/pull_request_template.md --> ## 📌 Description Sparse decode often reserves a large token capacity while only a few routes are live. This optimizes the existing SM107 Generic and GenPhase MegaMoE paths by avoiding invalid-slot work, shortening sparse metadata handling and reducing tail synchronization overhead. - Mask invalid payloads and scores in the separate BF16 reducer, allowing the matching pre-launch combine clear to be omitted. Quantized combine and in-kernel reduction keep their clearing rules. - Skip invalid histogram/scatter work. Fence rewritten shared-memory data into the async proxy before TMA publication; a CTA barrier alone is insufficient. GenPhase publishes the last valid route extent, transfers its aligned metadata prefix and uses a bounded shorter sort path, preserving holes and route IDs. - Reuse the existing padded scale-factor prefix for refinement scheduling. - Admit GenPhase `(256,64,128)` for the qualified MXFP8 E4M3 and mixed MXFP4/MXFP8 paths, with matching SFB/TMEM indexing, gather participation and live-row Gather4 transaction counts. Add the configurations to the offline tuning menu. - Use counted non-aligned barriers in warp-role branches and preserve a two-dimensional gather descriptor at capacity one. - Let CTA0 clear small tail-reset prefixes after the required drains, removing the post-reset local grid join. Generic keeps both peer barriers; GenPhase keeps its single peer barrier. EP1, prefixes above 16 KiB and NCU mode retain distributed reset. - Explicitly drain the preceding GenPhase router and join every main-kernel warp role before reset. Empty work cannot use epilogue completion as proof that all consumers have acquired ready flags or that refinement has stopped updating its counter. - Reject multirank GenPhase N64 phase-interleave during host configuration, before allocation or compilation; `is_valid_sm107` applies the same boundary to tuning candidates. Grouped N64, EP1 phase-interleave and inherited N128/N256 admission remain. Public call signatures and default-family selection are unchanged. Existing `inference` callers receive eligible internal improvements; using the separate GenPhase/N64 path still requires selecting that family and retuning. This extends the original implementation and does not introduce a FROST backend. ## 🔍 Related Issues Follow-up optimization of the existing SM107 MegaMoE implementation; no separate tracking issue. ## 🚀 Pull Request Checklist Thank you for contributing to FlashInfer! Current head `fff72c2` adds a host-only scheduling admission guard. **All 41 exported device files and the other unchanged runtime dependencies are byte-identical to `3cc30cd`.** Of 554 MoE runtime Python files, only `shim/block_scaled.py` changes, to reject multirank N64 phase-interleave. The retained grouped path computes the same descriptors and launches the same device implementation. New guard qualification on native SM107: - **48 host runtime-option tests pass**, including 15 schedule-boundary cases. The same new detector against the preceding shim gives the expected nine rejection failures and six retained-boundary passes. - **102 selected single-GPU tests pass**, plus **32 separate live-row/SF boundary cases** covering retained EP1 N64 phase-interleave, grouped controls and N128 across E4M3/mixed formats. The original single-suite filter does not select those 32 cases; they were run explicitly. - **Eight changing-route cases pass on every rank at both EP4 and EP2**, with grouped N64, C2 and mixed-format cases, early/late weights, seven-pusher stress, NaN-poisoned combine storage, exact-zero inactive rows and first/65th captured replays. - Changed-file pre-commit checks pass. At current head `fff72c2c`, the [targeted H100 CI job](https://github.com/flashinfer-ai/flashinfer/actions/runs/38551390140/job/115810256269) passed **177 tests**, with **188 architecture skips** and zero failures. All six x64/arm64 × CUDA 12.9/13.0/13.4 AOT build/import jobs and the [targeted CI workflow](https://github.com/flashinfer-ai/flashinfer/actions/runs/38551390140) have passed. H100 architecture skips are not native SM107 execution evidence; native results are listed separately above. The unchanged device implementation was additionally qualified at `3cc30cd`: all 71 registered multirank tests per rank at EP2 and EP4 passed without skips, and all-kernel synccheck/memcheck each passed eight GenPhase changing-route cases on all four ranks, with four zero-error summaries and no tool warnings. These are explicitly reused device-source results, not newly executed broad suites on the guarded head. Sanitizers complement source review and do not prove every cross-GPU memory-model relation. The new boundary addresses a concrete qualification gap: current-source N64 phase-interleave passed the EP4 changing-route suite but stalled in its first EP2 case and hit the 600-second qualifier timeout. The exact warmup/replay invocation was not isolated. A separate ready-dispatch prototype also timed out at its EP4 native gate and was not admitted to performance testing or this PR. Grouped performance results below do not qualify phase-interleave. An initial admission-detector invocation selected the wrong suite and collected no tests; the strict runner rejected it, and the corrected host-suite red/green records are retained with identical source/tests. ## Kernel GPU-time comparison **Direct comparison of the complete current PR against the best measured original FlashInfer finalist, on the same SM107 hardware with matched shape, EP, inputs and cache protocol. Further scheduler/mapper/prefetch prototypes remain outside the diff. The strongest recent mapper follow-up adds only about 1.8% at T64 warm and 1.4–1.5% cold against current PR, while regressing N128 prefill by about 0.7%; it has not earned general adoption. Fixed grouped-control gains do not establish wins over independently selected workload baselines. Earlier GLM-, DeepSeek- and Kimi-shaped measurements support specific component/eligible-path behavior; they are not current-head, best-original totals. The three new single-GPU test files are registered in both `qualify_sm107.py` and `tests/moe_ep/run_tests.sh`. `VENDOR.md` records local exported-code exceptions and admitted C2/N64 geometry. The sort wrapper passes its acquired route extent into `_run_sort_impl`, removing the duplicate wait/load while retaining the histogram-initialization barrier. These source fixes and qualifications do not substitute for maintainer review. Please focus on shared-to-async publication, the sparse ready-flag and reset lifetime contracts, all-role participation before reset, two-CTA SFB parity, Gather4 transaction accounting and named-barrier participant counts. No new EP8, Blackwell or NCU performance claim is made. The all-files hook checkbox remains unchecked: hooks were run on changed files to avoid unrelated formatting churn. <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **New Features** * Added GenPhase tuning candidates for supported N64 MXFP8 E4M3 and mixed MXFP4/MXFP8 configurations. 📌 Description
Sparse decode often reserves a large token capacity while only a few routes are live. This optimizes the existing SM107 Generic and GenPhase MegaMoE paths by avoiding invalid-slot work, shortening sparse metadata handling and reducing tail synchronization overhead.
Mask invalid payloads and scores in the separate BF16 reducer, allowing the matching pre-launch combine clear to be omitted. Quantized combine and in-kernel reduction keep their clearing rules.
Skip invalid histogram/scatter work. Fence rewritten shared-memory data into the async proxy before TMA publication; a CTA barrier alone is insufficient. GenPhase publishes the last valid route extent, transfers its aligned metadata prefix and uses a bounded shorter sort path, preserving holes and route IDs.
Reuse the existing padded scale-factor prefix for refinement scheduling.
Admit GenPhase
(256,64,128)for the qualified MXFP8 E4M3 and mixed MXFP4/MXFP8 paths, with matching SFB/TMEM indexing, gather participation and live-row Gather4 transaction counts. Add the configurations to the offline tuning menu.Use counted non-aligned barriers in warp-role branches and preserve a two-dimensional gather descriptor at capacity one.
Let CTA0 clear small tail-reset prefixes after the required drains, removing the post-reset local grid join. Generic keeps both peer barriers; GenPhase keeps its single peer barrier. EP1, prefixes above 16 KiB and NCU mode retain distributed reset.
Explicitly drain the preceding GenPhase router and join every main-kernel warp role before reset. Empty work cannot use epilogue completion as proof that all consumers have acquired ready flags or that refinement has stopped updating its counter.
Reject multirank GenPhase N64 phase-interleave during host configuration, before allocation or compilation;
