Developed by the CAKE team, the kernels in this PR outperform the relevant SOTA baselines at the time of merge on the vast majority of performance benchmark shapes, matching them otherwise.

Part of #4254. Closes #5368 (BF16 output / cache variant; the FP8 E4M3 variant is tracked in #5956).

Cake fused BF16 QK RMSNorm + NeoX RoPE + paged KV append (SM90 / SM100 / SM103)

Adds flashinfer.cake_fused_qk_rmsnorm_rope_append_paged_kv_cache (re-exported from flashinfer.rope): one launch that
unpacks a packed BF16 qkv [T, (Hq + 2 Hkv) * 128], applies optional per-head FP32 RMSNorm (qk_norm_policy 0 none / 1
RoPE→norm / 2 norm→RoPE), NeoX RoPE from an FP32 cos_sin [max_pos, 128] table, writes BF16 out_q [T, Hq, 128], appends K/V
into paged NHD BF16 caches through a dense [B, max_pages] page table (or caller-owned out_k/out_v) and zeroes the unused
tail of each request's last page. (Hq, Hkv) in {(8, 1), (64, 8)}; sm_90a (H100/H200), sm_100a (B200), sm_103a (B300).

Generated sources: csrc/cake_fused_qk_rope_append/{sm_90a,sm_100a,sm_103a}/* + manifest (rendered by Cake
loom.export.flashinfer_fused_qk_rope_append, CAKE-892). JIT loader: flashinfer/jit/cake_fused_qk_rope_append.py.

Under the Cake paired protocol (3 groups x 30 repeats) the kernel is faster than the #5405 fused kernel on all 28 representative
rows on all three cards (lowest 95 % CI lower bound of the ratio 1.058 on B200). #5405 is used only as the baseline here; the
interface is independent of it.

Tests

tests/attention/test_cake_fused_qk_rope_append.py (21 tests: decode/prefill x heads x policy x page size, cross-page appends,
ragged/empty/caller-owned, no-clear, B=300 lookup fallback, CUDA-graph replay, argument validation) — passed on H100, H200 and B200.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds a BF16 fused QK normalization, RoPE, and paged KV append operation. The change includes generated CUDA kernels and launch bindings for supported architectures, Python dispatch and validation, CUDA tests, and a comparison benchmark.

Changes

Fused QK RoPE append

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generated CUDA kernels and launch bindings
csrc/cake_fused_qk_rope_append/...
Adds six generated kernel modules and their TVM-FFI launch bindings. The kernels apply the selected Q/K normalization policy and RoPE, write Q and route K/V to output buffers or paged caches, and can clear unused rows in the final cache page. The source manifest records module contracts, build settings, source metadata, and hashes.
Python API and module selection
flashinfer/cake_fused_qk_rope_append.py, flashinfer/jit/cake_fused_qk_rope_append.py, flashinfer/rope.py
Adds the public operation and launch-plan helper. The JIT loader selects modules by head configuration and architecture, validates manifest records and source hashes, and builds modules. flashinfer.rope re-exports the operation.
Reference and CUDA validation
tests/attention/test_cake_fused_qk_rope_append.py
Adds reference comparisons and tests for decode and prefill, normalization policies, optional output buffers, cache clearing, large batches, CUDA graph replay, and invalid arguments.
Kernel comparison benchmark
benchmarks/bench_cake_fused_qk_rope_append.py
Adds eager and CUDA-graph timing for the fused operation, a stable FlashInfer pipeline, and an optional imported fused baseline. The script prints median timings and can write device, geometry, and timing results to JSON.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 84f55

The new fused operation raises an error on empty batches instead of returning immediately. It also does not reject a zero page size before the kernel divides by it. Both are narrow edge cases with simple fixes, so the change is mergeable with a small follow-up.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 84f55

The new operation modifies cache rows beyond those being appended, including for requests with no new tokens. Safe integration requires exclusive access to the affected page tails. Callers already control the buffers and request metadata, limiting the demonstrated exposure, but shared-page compatibility and recovery behavior remain unconfirmed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Default tail clearing requires exclusive write ownership beyond the appended rows. The kernel clears every nonempty request's last-page tail, even when that request appends no tokens or K/V are directed to caller-owned outputs. If requests share a physical last page at different logical lengths, clearing for the shorter request can erase rows still live for the longer request. The public documentation describes clearing and permits disabling it, but does not state an exclusive-page or copy-on-write requirement. This is a conditional integration risk; deployed shared-page exposure has not been established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is in-process GPU cache integrity. A caller able to alter page metadata can direct writes to another page or outside the cache allocation; the kernel does not receive a physical-page count for bounds enforcement. This does not establish cross-process access or remote attacker reachability, and the existing append convention also trusts caller metadata.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The PR-specific conditional path is shared-page corruption through default clearing: a shorter request selects a shared last page and zeros its tail, which may contain another request's live KV rows. No malicious metadata is necessary for that overlap, but shared-page use by an actual consumer is unverified. Disabling clearing or ensuring exclusive affected-page ownership prevents this particular overlap.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The wrapper enforces tensor structure, contiguity, and common device placement. Module selection is constrained, while generated-source hashes establish consistency with the local manifest, not independent authenticity. The shipped manifest contains no traversal paths; altering it requires package-data control rather than ordinary operation arguments.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — One launch is not a transactional cache update. The binding reports launch submission errors but provides no rollback or completion check before returning. Identical valid replay targets the same rows; concurrent overlapping ownership, stale lengths, or device faults can leave corrupted or partially updated state. Stream ordering, exclusive ownership, and post-failure cache recovery must therefore be supplied by the integrating runtime.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make writable-page ownership, valid post-append metadata, stream ordering, and fault-recovery responsibilities explicit. For shared-page integrations, require copy-on-write for affected page tails or disable clearing, including zero-token and caller-owned-output modes.
  • proposed — Resolve generated-source paths and enforce filesystem containment beneath the trusted source root. The current lexical prefix check can retain parent-directory components, although the shipped manifest contains none and ordinary public calls cannot supply such paths.

355-355: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Execution order is only partly balanced.

The alternating order flips only the arm sequence. Each arm always runs graph first and then eager. The default of 3 groups gives an unequal split (2 forward, 1 reversed). This leaves a fixed-direction bias from cache, thermal, and clock drift. Randomize or alternate the mode order per group. Also record the executed order with the raw timings. The JSON output holds only medians.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Return early when the launch grid is empty.

launch_plan returns grid_x == 0 when num_rows == 0 and num_requests == 0. All bindings reject this grid with ValueError("launch grid dimensions must be positive ..."). An empty batch should be a no-op that returns out_q. It should not raise an error.

The zero-size checks also do not cover page_size. If key_cache.shape[1] == 0, the kernels compute pos / page_size and last_c % page_size, which is an integer division by zero on the device. Reject page_size <= 0 in the Python checks so that the caller gets a clear ValueError.

🐛 Proposed fix
- plan = launch_plan(num_rows, num_requests, page_size, num_kv_heads, warps_per_row)
+ plan = launch_plan(num_rows, num_requests, page_size, num_kv_heads, warps_per_row)
+    if plan["grid"][0] == 0:
+ return out_q

Also add this check after the page_size = int(key_cache.shape[1]) line:

    _check(page_size > 0, "key_cache page_size must be positive")

…m, RoPE, FP8 quantize and paged KV append entry (SM90, SM100) (#5956)

> Developed by the **CAKE team**, the kernels in this PR **outperform**
the relevant **SOTA baselines at the time of merge** on the **vast
majority of performance benchmark shapes**, matching them otherwise.

Adds a standalone Cake-generated fused QK RMSNorm + NeoX RoPE + FP8 E4M3
quantize + NHD paged-KV append route,
`flashinfer.cake_fused_qk_rope_fp8_append.cake_fused_qk_rmsnorm_rope_quantize_fp8_append_paged_kv_cache`
(re-exported from `flashinfer.rope`), for SM90 (H100/H200), SM100 (B200)
and SM103 (B300). Resolves the SM90/SM100 part of #5368. Same layout as
the merged BF16 route #5952.

This PR is based on `main` and is self-contained: no code from, and no
dependency on, any other pull request. The entry point, argument order
and buffer ownership are defined here (see Contract).

## What changes

- `csrc/cake_fused_qk_rope_fp8_append/`: exporter-rendered kernel +
tvm-ffi binding per architecture (`sm_90a`, `sm_100a`, `sm_103a`) and
the `cake.library_export.v5` manifest (rendered and parity-checked by
the Cake exporter `flashinfer_fused_qk_rope_fp8_append`, Cake commit
`197d479fabf`; the parity check against this head is clean).
- `flashinfer/cake_fused_qk_rope_fp8_append.py`: host wrapper (argument
validation, default `out_q` / `q_scale` / `split_k_flag` allocation,
dependency-free `launch_plan`, one tvm-ffi launch);
`flashinfer/jit/cake_fused_qk_rope_fp8_append.py`: manifest-driven JIT
loader (hash-checked sources, exact compute capability 9.0 / 10.0 /
10.3).
- `flashinfer/rope.py`: re-export; `.pre-commit-config.yaml`:
clang-format exclude for the generated sources (as for #5952).
- `tests/attention/test_cake_fused_qk_rope_fp8_append.py` (51 tests):
fp32 reference (per-head RMSNorm eps 1e-6, NeoX RoPE, `max(|q|, 1e-6) /
upper_max` or static scale, `x / scale` K/V payloads); FP8 payloads vs
the unrounded payload at atol 0.1 / rtol 0.1, `q_scale` rel 1e-5, flags
/ tails / every untouched byte bitwise. Decode (page 16/64) and prefill
(cross-page, ragged, empty requests) × (8,1)/(64,8) × norm 0/1/2 × quant
1/2, dynamic-scale padding boundary Q 127/128/129, caller-owned
`out_k`/`out_v`, `upper_max` 240, malformed `q_indptr`
(first/non-monotone/last) and `max_seqlen` overflow → all flags -1 and
no byte written, CUDA-graph capture + 3 replays bitwise vs eager,
argument validation.
- `benchmarks/bench_cake_fused_qk_rope_fp8_append.py`: CUPTI (cold L2)
timing of the Cake entry against the stable step-wise pipeline
(`rmsnorm` → `apply_rope_pos_ids_inplace` → torch FP8 quantize →
`append_paged_kv_cache`).

k_scale`, `x / v_scale`; RN satfinite FP8; `upper_max` finite in (0,
448]; `seq_lens` = total length after the append, positions `r +
seq_lens[b] - q_indptr[b + 1]`; rows `[last + 1, page_size)` of every
request's last page zeroed in both caches; `split_k_flag[b, h]` 0 after
a valid call (empty requests included), -1 with no Q/K/V/cache/`q_scale`
write when `q_indptr` is malformed or a request exceeds `max_seqlen`
(validation on the device, no host sync, graph-replayable; no memset or
validate kernel).

One launch per call: one CTA per (packed row, kv head group) plus one
CTA per (request, kv head) for the tail clear and the flag; 96 threads,
scalar fp32 math, `cvt.rn.satfinite.e4m3x2.f32` stores, no
TMA/TMEM/WGMMA (minimum architecture sm_90a; the same physical source
renders for all three architectures).

## Correctness

- This PR's tests: 51 passed on H100 (CUDA 13.3 and the CI image CUDA
12.9 / nvcc 12.9) and on B200; Cake exporter parity check clean;
pre-commit clean with the hook pins of `main`.
- Cake harness (independent fp32 oracle, 44 perf rows + 29 hardening
rows per card; hardening: page 4/16/64/128, ragged incl. empty requests,
cross-page, permuted page tables, caller-buffer reuse,
malformed/overflow canaries, out-of-range cache bytes bitwise unchanged,
invalid `upper_max` / `quant_policy` / `max_seqlen` errors, eager vs
CUDA-graph replay bitwise ×3): Cake 73/73 per card.
- compute-sanitizer 13.3 synccheck + memcheck: 0 errors on B200 and H100
(negative controls fire: 16 / 7 errors).
- Last-page tail clear uses raw zero-word stores (the all-zero
`cvt.rn.satfinite.e4m3x2.f32` pack is mis-lowered by ptxas 12.9 on
sm_90a; verified clean under nvcc 12.9 and 13.3).

## Performance (full-entry latency, CUPTI active union of every launch
of one call, cold L2)

Protocol (Cake paired-bench harness `fused_qk_fp8_paired_bench`): same
inputs, BF16-rounded norm weights, same scales / policies / caller-owned
buffers in all arms; arms interleaved × 3 pooled sessions × 2000 samples
per arm per session; median; buffer restore outside the CUPTI bracket;
one timing job per node. `stable pipeline` = the in-tree step-wise route
(`rmsnorm` → `apply_rope_pos_ids_inplace` → torch FP8 quantize →
`append_paged_kv_cache`, 20+ launches), report only: its BF16
intermediates do not meet the FP8 contract tolerance and it does not
clear the last-page tail. `floor` = the latency-chain / bandwidth lower
bound of the row on that card (dependent DRAM round trips of one CTA for
the small rows, bytes / HBM bandwidth for the streaming rows).

Gate run of the shipped kernel v4g (round 10, step 72110d82dee7,
allocation 19673332). This node runs 2-3 % slower than the earlier
rounds' node; a back-to-back re-measurement of v4f and v4g on one node
(pool0-01669, steps b1137caddb40 / b75c31340bf7) gives Cake geomeans
4.171 / 4.172 us (v4g within +0.02 % of v4f), so the tail-clear change
is performance-neutral.

… selection for the fused BF16 QK RMSNorm + NeoX RoPE + paged KV append (SM90 / SM100 / SM103) (#6008)

> Developed by the **CAKE team**, the kernels in this PR **outperform**
the relevant **SOTA baselines at the time of merge** on the **vast
majority of performance benchmark shapes**, matching them otherwise.

Part of #4254. Follow-up to #5952 (same API, same tests, faster
programs); related to #5368.

## Cake fused BF16 QK RMSNorm + NeoX RoPE + paged KV append:
per-architecture / per-shape program selection

`flashinfer.cake_fused_qk_rmsnorm_rope_append_paged_kv_cache` keeps its
signature, semantics, tolerances and tests. This PR
regenerates the Cake-exported sources as a **set of programs** and lets
the host pick one per call:

* `csrc/cake_fused_qk_rope_append/{sm_90a,sm_100a,sm_103a}/*`: 20
program stages (4 sm_90a + 8 sm_100a + 8 sm_103a) instead
of 2 per architecture. Every program is the merged schedule with a
different exact configuration (request-lookup path,
V-tile ownership of otherwise idle warps, one head group per warp for
(64, 8), clearing granularity); no approximation,
no precision change: FP32 RMSNorm / RoPE with table cos/sin, BF16
round-to-nearest, bit-identical outputs to the
previous kernel on every tested shape (checked on H100, H200 and B200).
* `flashinfer/jit/cake_fused_qk_rope_append.py`:
`stage_for(num_qo_heads, num_kv_heads, arch=..., num_rows=...,
num_requests=...,
page_size=..., num_sms=...)` mirrors the exporter's selection table
(`stage_policy` in
`cake_fused_qk_rope_append_manifest.json`): sm_90a uses the direct
request lookup on every (8, 1) shape and one head group
per warp on (64, 8) when the clearing grid fits beside the row CTAs;
sm_100a / sm_103a use it for decode batches and large
clearing grids and keep the previous program elsewhere. The JIT module
name carries the selected stage, so each program is
  compiled once.
* `flashinfer/cake_fused_qk_rope_append.py`: passes the shape to the
selector (no new arguments).
* `tests/attention/test_cake_fused_qk_rope_append.py`: the selector
table is tested on the CPU for both architectures, and every
selected program runs through the existing correctness cases (42 tests).

Over the 23 gate shapes (28 with the reporting rows) the geometric mean
of this PR over #5952 is 1.009 on B200, 1.065 on H200 and
1.066 on H100 (1.023 / 1.071 / 1.073 over all 28 rows); the largest
gains are the (64, 8) rows and the large decode batches
(B200 B512 decode 1.30x). No row regresses: the 95 % confidence interval
lower bound of the paired ratio is >= 1.00 on every row
on every card; rows where the selector keeps the previous program are
byte-identical builds. Against #5405 the geometric mean over
the gate rows is 1.69 (B200), 1.66 (H200) and 1.66 (H100), and every row
is faster.

### Tests

`tests/attention/test_cake_fused_qk_rope_append.py` (42 tests: the 21
cases of #5952 plus the selector table and every selected
program through decode / prefill / policy / page-size / ragged /
caller-owned / no-clear / graph-replay cases) passed on
a B200 node and an H100 node with the exact sources of this PR (42
passed on each). compute-sanitizer synccheck and memcheck report 0
errors for every
program on H200 and B200, with negative controls flagged by the same
tool.

The generated sources are rendered by the Cake exporter from the merged
Cake change; the render is identified by the SHA-256
list of its 41 files (digest `bd56d5d5d1b8dbac`), and the manifest
records the program table, the selection policy and the per-file
checksums. The pre-commit exclusion for the exported sources is
unchanged.

…RMSNorm + RoPE overlapped with the Ulysses head exchange (SM90 / SM100 / SM103) (#6332)

## 📌 Description

Part of #4254. Implements the overlap requested in #6304 (assumptions
stated below where the issue thread has not confirmed a choice).

Adds `flashinfer.comm.QkvNormRopeExchangeOverlap`: one prepared session
that fuses the attention front end of a
sequence-parallel (Ulysses) layer — the BF16 QKV projection, per-head
RMSNorm of Q and K, interleaved RoPE from a
per-token cos/sin table, and the head exchange — into a single call per
layer. The Cake backend stores every
destination's head band straight from the GEMM epilogue into that rank's
symmetric receive slot over NVLink and
publishes per-chunk readiness words, so the exchange overlaps the
projection instead of following it; a one-CTA wait
kernel on a consumer stream acquires the words and the caller's stream
joins it.

* Architectures: SM90 (WGMMA producer), SM100 and SM103 (tcgen05
producer; 2-CTA pair tile for `block_n = 256` and
rows of at least 4096 tokens). Single-node NVLink groups of 2, 4 or 8
ranks, `head_dim = 128`, BF16 operands,
  fp32 cos/sin table.
* Layouts: `"bshd"` returns `(q, k, v)` views of `[B, S_global, H_local,
D]`; `"fused"` returns one
`[B, S_global, H_local, 3 * D]` payload. Outputs are views of the
current receive slot and stay valid until the
slot is reused `num_slots` calls later; `out=` copies into caller-owned
tensors.
* Backend selection: `backend="auto"` goes through
`resolve_ulysses_backend` (NVLink mesh probe) and the device
capability; otherwise the NCCL path (cuBLAS projection,
`flashinfer.norm.rmsnorm`, RoPE,
`UlyssesCommunicator.scatter_qkv_head_chunk`). `backend="nvlink"` raises
`UlyssesBackendError` when the mesh or the
architecture is not supported; the NCCL path reports `graph_capturable
== False`.
* CUDA graphs: a prepared call allocates nothing and runs no host
collective; captured calls publish a sentinel
epoch and clear their readiness words with a stream memset after the
wait kernel, so replays interleave with
eager calls. A call with more rows than `max_tokens`, or a row count
first seen inside a capture, raises instead of
allocating. At most `num_slots` calls of one session can be captured
into one graph without an eager call between.
* `heads % world_size != 0` raises `ValueError` deterministically on
every rank before any collective (same
  contract as `UlyssesCommunicator.scatter_heads`).

### Assumptions (open points in #6304)

The issue thread has not yet confirmed the following choices; this PR
implements the defaults below and labels them
here so reviewers and the requester can object:

* **Exchange algorithm**: Ulysses-style QKV all-to-all (each rank holds
a token shard and the full QKV weight; every
rank receives its head band of all tokens). Ring-style KV exchange is
out of scope.
* **Operator math**: the public FLUX definitions — fp32 RMSNorm with
`eps = 1e-6` and a shared `[head_dim]` weight per
Q / K, interleaved (pairwise) RoPE applied in fp32 from a per-token
cos/sin table, in the order projection → QK-norm →
RoPE; BF16 operands and outputs (no FP8 producer).
* **Receive layout**: both the `(q, k, v)` `[B, S_global, H_local, D]`
views and the fused `[B*S_global, 3*H_local*D]`
payload are supported; the numbers below are measured with the `bshd`
layout on every architecture.
* **Tolerance**: `atol = rtol = 1e-2` against an fp32 step-by-step
reference. Isolated single-ulp BF16 differences
(a value landing on the other side of a BF16 rounding boundary after a
different fp32 accumulation order, max_abs
0.03125) occur both in this kernel and in the existing per-operator
path; the tests classify those elements explicitly
  instead of loosening the tolerance.

## 🚀 Pull Request Checklist

Thank you for contributing to FlashInfer! Before we review your pull
request, please make sure the following items are complete.

### ✅ Pre-commit Checks

- [x] I have installed `pre-commit` by running `pip install pre-commit`
(or used your preferred method).
- [ ] I have installed the hooks with `pre-commit install`.
- [x] I have run the hooks manually with `pre-commit run --all-files`
and fixed any reported issues.

> If you are unsure about how to set up `pre-commit`, see [the
pre-commit documentation](https://pre-commit.com/).

The hooks were run as `pre-commit run --files <the 31 files changed by
this PR>` with the hook versions pinned in `.pre-commit-config.yaml`
(unchanged by this PR); all 12 hooks pass, including clang-format, mypy,
ruff check and ruff format.

## 🧪 Tests

- [x] Tests have been added or updated as needed.
- [ ] All tests are passing (`unittest`, etc.).

Every path is checked against an fp32 step-by-step reference
(projection, RMSNorm with the bf16 cast before the
bf16 scale, interleaved RoPE, bf16 output) redistributed with
`all_gather`, `atol = rtol = 1e-2`, on both layouts
including a tail row count (`S_local = 200`), after CUDA-graph replays
with fresh inputs, with two sessions in flight on
one group, and on the NCCL path. The multi-GPU tests spawn 2, 4 and 8
ranks on one node and skip on fewer devices or
an unsupported architecture.

The host-only tests of
`tests/comm/test_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py` (`-k "not
multi_gpu"`, 21 passed) ran on the pre-check node; the 2-, 4- and 8-GPU
tests need a multi-GPU node and are left to CI.

### Test plan

- [ ] `pytest tests/comm/test_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py -q` on
an 8-GPU SM100 node
- [ ] same on an 8-GPU SM103 node
- [ ] same on an 8-GPU SM90 node
- [ ] `torchrun --standalone --nproc-per-node=8
benchmarks/comm/bench_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py --rows
representative --json bench_w8.json` per architecture
- [x] `pre-commit run --files <new files>` (31 files; 12 / 12 hooks
pass)

## 🔬 Experimental Track

<!-- Only for PRs submitted under the experimental policy
(CONTRIBUTING.md → "Experimental APIs and Backends").
Leave this section untouched for normal PRs. -->

- [ ] This PR is **experimental**: it adds or changes code under
`flashinfer/experimental/` and/or an `@flashinfer_experimental_api`.
Tracking issue: #
- [ ] The tracking issue names an owner, the reason for the experimental
path, and a graduation plan with a target release.
- [ ] Core changes are limited to a thin entry point (signature, shared
validation, feature-gate check, backend selection, handoff).
- [ ] Tests live in `tests/experimental/` and were validated on the
intended hardware; a runnable example is included.
- [ ] Nothing is registered in `flashinfer/aot.py`, and no experimental
backend is reachable from `backend="auto"` without
`FLASHINFER_ALLOW_EXPERIMENTAL_AUTO_BACKENDS=1`. (Calling an
`@flashinfer_experimental_api` or naming a backend explicitly is itself
the opt-in and needs no environment variable.)
- [ ] **Test scope declared below.** The experimental CI lane runs
exactly these targets, so keep them as narrow as the change allows.

## Reviewer Notes

- The device and binding translation units under
`csrc/cake_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap/` are generated and attested
by content hash; the host path
(`flashinfer/comm/qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py`,
`cake_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py`, `cake_qkv_exchange_plan.py`),
the JIT loader and the tests are hand-written and are the parts to read
first.
- The Speedup section separates the benchmark table from the
export-protocol receipts; rows that failed the protocol's validity gates
(power-capped clocks) are listed, not reported as measured.

## Speedup

Measured with `benchmarks/comm/bench_qkv_norm_rope_exchange_overlap.py`
(CUPTI activity timing, cold L2, per-rank
maximum then median; `--rows representative`) against the fastest
per-operator path on the same node. The
per-operator baselines are: B1 three `scatter_heads` collectives, B2 one
`scatter_qkv_head_chunk` over the whole head
band, B3 the default head-chunk schedule, B4
`ulysses_a2a_in(fuse_qkv=True)` over NCCL. On SM90 the Ulysses
communicator of B1-B3 runs on its NCCL backend (the NVLink Ulysses
kernels target SM100 / SM103).

### Measured speedup (72 rows per architecture)

Grid: `W ∈ {2, 4, 8}` ranks on one node × `hidden ∈ {3072, 4096, 6144,
8192}` (`head_dim = 128`) × `S_global ∈ {4096 … 131072}`,
`B = 1`, BF16. Each row was timed on one 8-GPU node with CUPTI activity
tracing (cold L2, per-rank maximum then median,
five A/B/B/A rounds of ten samples, an A/A control arm within ±1 % or
the row was re-measured) against the fastest of
the four per-operator paths above measured in the same process. speedup
= fastest baseline / fused. Every measured row is
faster than its fastest baseline.

| GPU | rows faster than the fastest baseline | geometric mean
(A/A-valid rows) | W = 8 / 4 / 2 | minimum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| B200 (SM100) | 72 / 72 | 1.831 | 1.824 / 1.849 / 1.820 | 1.261 |
| B300 (SM103) | 72 / 72 | 1.906 | 1.911 / 1.891 / 1.916 | 1.241 |
| H100 (SM90) | 71 / 71 | 1.332 | 1.339 / 1.348 / 1.310 | 1.135 |

Notes: on B300 the row `W = 4, hidden 3072, S_global 8192` (2.26–2.31×
in three measurements) exceeded the ±1 % A/A
control in all three and is excluded from the geometric mean; on H100
(80 GB) the row `W = 2, hidden 8192,
S_global 131072` does not fit in device memory with the reference and
baseline buffers and is not measured.

### Export-protocol validation (per-row receipts, three architectures)

Independently of the table above, every row was re-measured by the
export protocol that produced the generated
sources in this PR: same CUPTI method (cold L2, per-rank maximum then
median, counterbalanced A/B/B/A groups), the
generated programs loaded through this PR's JIT path, the four
per-operator baselines measured in the same process,
plus the validity gates per row (source/export agreement >= 0.95,
directional disagreement <= 0.12, endpoint
drift <= 0.15, loaded SM clock >= 50 % of the maximum boost clock). A
row counts only when all gates pass.

**Protocol change (2026-10-11): loaded-SM-clock floor 0.60 -> 0.50.**
The floor used to be 0.60. At the largest
`W = 2 / 4, S_global = 131072` rows the B200 (1000 W) and B300 (1100 W)
board power limits hold the loaded SM clock
at 0.48 - 0.60 of the maximum on every node tried (five nodes per SKU,
three rounds), so those rows were rejected
unconditionally. The floor is now 0.50; the directional, drift and
source gates are unchanged. Every previously
accepted row was measured under the stricter 0.60 floor and remains
valid as measured; under the relaxed floor one
further row was accepted (`corr_w2_max` on B300, a correctness row). The
rows that still fail are listed below.

| GPU | perf rows with a valid receipt | all valid rows faster than the
fastest baseline | geometric mean (W = 8 / 4 / 2) | minimum | rows
without a valid receipt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| B200 (SM100) | 69 / 72 | yes | 1.686 (1.535 / 1.716 / 1.832) | 1.170 |
3 |
| B300 (SM103) | 69 / 72 | yes | 1.700 (1.511 / 1.737 / 1.889) | 1.109 |
3 |
| H100 (SM90) | 70 / 72 | yes | 1.306 (1.296 / 1.319 / 1.301) | 1.093 |
2 |

Correctness / negative rows of the export protocol (13 per GPU,
including the largest-shape correctness row
`corr_w2_max`): H100 13 / 13, B300 13 / 13, B200 12 / 13 (`corr_w2_max`
reads 0.496 and 0.492 of the maximum clock
on two nodes, below the 0.50 floor; its correctness is covered by the
harness correctness table above).

Rows without a valid receipt (disclosed, not counted; the raw ratio of
an invalid attempt is not a measurement):

| GPU | W | hidden | S_global | why the receipt is invalid | attempts
(nodes) | raw ratio of the last attempt |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| B200 | 2 | 8192 | 131072 | rounds 1 - 2: loaded SM clock 847 / 1170 /
1147 MHz of 1965 under the 1000 W limit; round 3 at the 0.50 floor: B1
endpoint drift 0.30 / 0.22 and B2 directional disagreement > 0.12 | 4 (3
nodes) | 1.37 - 1.69 |
| B200 | 4 | 8192 | 131072 | rounds 1 - 2: loaded SM clock below the 60
% floor (960 / 1177 MHz); round 3: B1 directional disagreement > 0.12 |
3 (3 nodes) | 1.55 - 1.89 |
| B200 | 2 | 6144 | 131072 | directional disagreement of the B1 / B3
baselines > 0.12 (candidate gates pass) | 2 (2 nodes) | 1.54 - 1.90 |
| B300 | 2 | 8192 | 131072 | rounds 1 - 2: loaded SM clock 1117 / 1140 /
1170 MHz of 2032 under the 1100 W limit; round 3: B2 / B3 directional
disagreement > 0.12 | 4 (3 nodes) | 1.44 - 1.84 |
| B300 | 4 | 8192 | 131072 | rounds 1 - 2: loaded SM clock 1147 / 1215
MHz of 2032; round 3: B1 directional disagreement, B2 directional
disagreement + endpoint drift | 4 (3 nodes) | 1.47 - 1.90 |
| B300 | 2 | 6144 | 131072 | directional disagreement of the B2 / B3
baselines > 0.12 | 3 (2 nodes) | 1.70 - 2.16 |
| H100 | 8 | 8192 | 131072 | directional disagreement of the B4 (NCCL)
baseline 0.15 - 0.18 > 0.12 in all five attempts (candidate and B1 - B3
gates pass); the raw B2 ratio of the attempts that reached the arms is
0.97 - 0.99 | 5 (5 nodes) | 0.97 - 1.15 |
| H100 | 2 | 8192 | 131072 | does not fit in 80 GB with the reference
and the four baseline arms (not measurable) | - | - |

The largest shapes run power-capped on the B200 / B300 nodes available
for this work (clocks at 48 - 60 % of the
maximum boost); once the clock floor no longer rejects them, the order
effect between the baseline arms (each tens of
milliseconds, with power-state transitions between arms) exceeds the
0.12 directional gate on every node tried. The
per-operator table above measured those rows on other nodes of the same
type, where the row
`W = 2, hidden 8192, S_global 131072` reached 23 ms vs 28.9 ms. The
export protocol is not relaxed further for them;
they are listed here rather than reported as measured.
